  • Android: Learning the platform, have any app suggestions?

    I'm beginning to learn mobile programming on the Android platform. I'm up for working with any particular base SDK. I just want to hear some suggestions from the community about what types of applications I should start with to help learn more advanced interactions with the platform. There are of course the Standard Hello World, calculator, etc. But by now I am bored with all of those. What do you all make when learning a new language?

  • How much time do PHP/Python/Ruby *programmers* spend on CSS?

    Not sure about you guys, but I detest working in CSS. Not that it is a bad language/markup, don't get me wrong. I just hate spending hours figuring out how to get 5 pixels to show on every browser, and getting fonts to look like a PSD counterpart. So a question (or two) for programmers out there. How much time (%) do you spend on web markup? Do you tend to do this type of tweaking, or do your designers?

    The C# Language Reference on MSDN defines that protected internal as "Access is limited to the current assembly or types derived from the containing class". But from the semantic point of protected internal" sounds to me like both protected and internal which means the member will accessible only to those derived classes with in the same assembly. Is there any access modified that has a meaning to the same effect?

  • Xubuntu stuck after login

    How can I debug an issue with Xubuntu 12.04 (fresh install) which just waits idle after a login for about 30 seconds? The login screen is delayed correctly. After login, I get my desktop background, but no panels or auto-starting apps. It doesn't seem to be an authentication/pam issue, because I can login without delay at the console while the graphical session is still stuck. There's no disk or cpu activity and no obvious respawning of any process when I look at htop. There's nothing obviously wrong in .xsession-errors. Most interesting errors: openConnection: connect: No such file or directory cannot connect to brltty at :0 WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to: /tmp/keyring-wFn4VR/pkcs11: No such file or directory ...     Hi, I'm trying to find a way to get some weather information with Yahoo Weather using Yahoo Query Language. As i'm living in France, in a city called Nice, the following query returns an error: select * from weather.forecast where location='Nice' And as I have the latitude and longitude coordinated, how can I give them to the YQL to return the weather info?   • Is there an open source immutable dictionary for C#, with fast 'With/Without' methods?

    I'm looking for a proper C# immutable dictionary, with fast update methods (that create a partial copy of the dictionary with slight changes). I've implemented one myself, using zippers to update a red-black tree, but it's not particularly fast. By 'immutable dictionary' I don't just mean readonly or const. I want something that has reasonably fast 'With' and 'Without', or equivalent, methods that return a thing with slight modifications without modifying the original. An example from another language is map in Scala

    Hi, I need to build a component which would take a few XML documents in input and check the following kind of rules: XML1:/bookstore/book[price>35.00] != null and (XML2:/city/name = 'Montreal' or XML3://customer[@language] contains 'en') Basically my component should be able to: substitute the XML tokens with the corresponding XML document(before colon) apply xpath query on this XML document check the xpath output against expected result ("=", "!=", "contains") follow the basic syntax ("and", "or" and parentheses) tell if the rule is true or false Do you know any library which could help me? maybe JavaCC?     I know C and C++ and I have some experience with Java, but I don't know too much about Algorithms and Data Structures. I did a search on Amazon, but I don't know what book should I choose. I don't want a book which put its basis only on the theoretic part; I want the practical part too (probably more than the theoretical one :) ). I don't want the code to be implemented in a certain language, but if is in Java, probably I would happier. :)

  • running same query in different databases

    I wrote a query that I want to run in several access databases. I have 1000+ access databases with the same tables (same names, same fields). So far, I have been manually copying this query from a txt file to the sql view in the access query design screen for each database and then run it. I did not need to change the query language - everything is the same for the 1000 databases. Is there a way to automate this?
