• Pinterest and Social Commerce: The Social Networking Site Retailers Shouldn’t Ignore

  If you are in the midst of remodeling your home, researching the latest spring fashion trends, or simply trying to figure out what to cook for dinner you’ve probably been on Pinterest, and like me, find it extremely useful for generating new ideas and storing them all in one place. Gone are the days of folding over corners of magazines or bookmarking the URL of a Web page – Pinterest makes it easy for you to “pin” ideas, photos, links, and more to virtual bulletin boards where your “followers” can repin, like, and share. As a consumer, Pinterest has gained my attention and I’m definitely not the only one. According to a Monetate infographic, Pinterest’s unique visitors increased 329% from September to December 2011. With this explosion of users, what does it mean for social commerce? Also according to Monetate, Pinterest is one of the top traffic drivers for retailers – driving even more traffic than popular social networking sites like Google+.  For businesses, creating a presence on Pinterest is a great way to extend the reach of your brand, increase inbound links, and drive more traffic to your site. Socialnomics has a great post on how some of the biggest retail brands are using Pinterest to connect with consumers, offer cool content, and engage on a more personal level. When evaluating your social commerce program, while Facebook still delivers the most referrals, Pinterest shouldn’t be ignored as a way to help reach and connect with as many consumers as possible.

• Cannot update Windows update

  When I try to get latest windows updates, windows (7 home) tells me that it needs to update the windows update. And that the Update window needs to be restarted in order to do that. After that restart I get error "WindowsUpdate 8007006D". Googlin that code doesnt' give me any more information. • Best 'Remember the milk' client for Windows XP

  I'm a user of RTM (Remember The Milk). Since I have Windows 7 at home, I'm using a Windows Sidebar gadget ('Forget the milk'). But as I'm using Win XP at office, I cannot use the gadget. I am looking for an RTM client for Windows XP. I have used a software running on Adobe AIR, which requires to go to the RTM site every time to add a job. Is there any other effective clients for XP which can at least: Add a task Delete a task without visiting the site every time.

• Tunnel into Sonicwall VPN while on Sonicwall wifi?

  Hey all, I am able to hit my company's VPN while I am at home using a dedicated IP with no issue. When I am at work, the VPN we use (a Sonicwall router/VPN/wifi access point), I can get outside internet fine, but am unable to connect to the VPN. I know that the wifi puts me on a different subnet, and when I try to connect to the normal VPN IP it won't work, and a traceroute just times out. Any suggestions? Might there be an internal IP I need to hit while here at work?

• Super Computer Built from Raspberry Pi Boards and LEGO Bricks

  It was only a matter of time before someone chained together dozens of Raspberry Pi boards into a serviceable super computer; read on to see how a team of Southampton scientists built a 64-core machine using them. Image courtesy of Simon Cox and the University of Southampton. From the University of South Hampton press release: Professor Cox comments: “As soon as we were able to source sufficient Raspberry Pi computers we wanted to see if it was possible to link them together into a supercomputer. We installed and built all of the necessary software on the Pi starting from a standard Debian Wheezy system image and we have published a guide so you can build your own supercomputer.” The racking was built using Lego with a design developed by Simon and James, who has also been testing the Raspberry Pi by programming it using free computer programming software Python and Scratch over the summer. The machine, named “Iridis-Pi” after the University’s Iridis supercomputer, runs off a single 13 Amp mains socket and uses MPI (Message Passing Interface) to communicate between nodes using Ethernet. The whole system cost under £2,500 (excluding switches) and has a total of 64 processors and 1Tb of memory (16Gb SD cards for each Raspberry Pi). Professor Cox uses the free plug-in ‘Python Tools for Visual Studio’ to develop code for the Raspberry Pi.   We have a customer which have all they core business database on RAC over Windows OS. Last year they were affected by a virus that destroyed the registry and all their RAC environments were "OUT OF ORDER", the result, thousand people on vacation for a day.They were distrustful about Linux and after came an agreement to migrate their Enterprise Manager from Windows to Linux (OMS and Repository). • Install Additional Printer Drivers (x86) on Vista (x64) - Can't find suitable (x86) ntprint.inf

  I have a printer connected to my computer that I'd like to share on my home network - shouldn't be a problem. The computer the printer is connected to is running Vista Ultimate x64. The computers I'm trying to share with are x86 Windows XP Professional and x86 Vista, so I need to install additional (x86) drivers. I checked the box to add x86 printer drivers and then it asked for the location of the drivers. I browsed to the location and clicked OK. It then prompted "Please provide path to Windows media (x86 processor). When I click "Browse..." it wants the location of a file named ntprint.inf It looks like it's asking for a Windows (x86) installation disk. I put one in but I can't seem to find this file on the 32-bit Vista install disk Where is the proper place to find this file?

  I have Kerberos-based authentication and I want to disable it on only root url: mysite.com/. And I want it to works fine on any other page like mysite.com/page1. I have such things in my .htaccess: AuthType Kerberos AuthName "Domain login" KrbAuthRealms DOMAIN.COM KrbMethodK5Passwd on Krb5KeyTab /etc/httpd/httpd.keytab require valid-user I want to turn it off only for root URL. As workaround it is possible to turn off using .htaccess in virtual host config. Unfortunately I don't know how to do it. • Customize the Windows Media Center Start Menu with Media Center Studio

  Do you ever wish you could change the WMC start menu? Maybe move some of the tiles and strips around to different locations, add new ones, or eliminate some altogether? Today we look at how to do it using Media Center Studio. Download and install Media Center Studio. (Download link below) You’ll also want to make sure you have Windows Media Center closed before running Media Center Studio. Many of the actions cannot be performed with Media Center open. Once installed, you can open Media Center Studio from the Windows Start Menu. When you first open Media Center Studio you’ll be on the Themes tab. Click on the Start Menu tab. It should be noted that Media Center Studio is a Beta application, and it did crash on us a few times, so it’s a good idea to save your work frequently. You can save your changes by selecting Save on the Home tab, or by clicking the small disk icon at the top left. We also found that that trying to launch Media Center from the Start Media Center button on the application ribbon typically didn’t work. Opening Windows Media Center from the Windows Start Menu is preferred.   When you’re on the Start Menu tab you will see the Windows Media Center menu strips and tiles. Click the arrows located at the right, left, top, and bottom of the screen to scroll through the various menu strips.   Hiding and Removing Tiles and Menu Strips. If there is an entire menu strip that you never use and would like to remove from Media Center, simply uncheck the box to the left of the the title above that menu strip. If you’d like to hide individual tiles, uncheck the box next to the name of the individual tile. Renaming Tiles and Strips To rename a tile or menu strip, click on the small notepad icon next to the title. Note: If you do not see a small notepad icon next to the title, then the title is not editable. This applies to many of the “Promo” tiles. The title will turn into a text input box so that you can edit the name. Click away from the text box when finished. Here we will change the title of the default Movie strip to “Flicks.” Change the Default Tile and Menu Strip The Default menu strip is the strip that is highlighted, or on focus, when you open Media Center.   To change the default strip, simply click once on another strip to highlight it, and then save your work. In our example, I’m going to make our newly renamed “Flicks” strip the default.   Each menu strip has a default tile. This is the tile that is active, or on focus, when you select the menu strip. To change the default tile on a strip, click once on the tile. You will see it outlined in light blue. Now just simply save your changes. In our example below, we’ve changed the default tile on the TV strip to “guide.”   Moving Tiles and Menu Strips You can move an entire Menu Strip up or down on the screen. When you hover your mouse over the a menu strip, you will see up and down arrows appear to the right and left of the title. Click on the arrows to move the strip up or down.   You will see the menu strip appear in it’s new position.   To move a tile to a new menu strip, click and drag the tile you’d like to move. When you begin to drag the tile, green plus (+) signs will appear in between the tiles. Drag and drop the tile onto to any of these green plus signs to move it to that location. When you’ve dragged the tile over an acceptable position, you’ll see the  red “Move” label next to your cursor turn to a blue “Move to” label. Now you can drop the tile into position. You’ll see the tile located in it’s new position.   Adding a New Custom Menu Strip Click on the Start Menu tab and then select the Menu Strip button.   You will see a new Custom Menu strip appear on your Start Menu with the default name of Custom menu. You can change the name by clicking on the notepad icon just as we did earlier. For our example, we’ll change the name of the new strip to Add-ins. To add a new tile, click on Entry Points at the lower left of the application window. This will reveal all of your available Entry Points that can be added to the Media Center Menu. You should see the built-in Media Center Games and any Media Center Plug-ins you have added to your system. You can then drag and drop any of the Entry Points onto any of the Menu Strips. Below we’ve added Media Browser to our custom Add-ins menu strip. You can also add additional applications to launch directly from Media Center. Click on the Application button on the Start Menu tab. Note: Many applications may not work with your remote, but with keyboard and mouse only.    Type in a title which will appear under the tile in Media Center, and then type the path to the application. In our example, we will add Internet Explorer 8. Note: Be sure to add the actual path to the application and not just a link on the desktop. Click any of the check boxes to select any options under Required Capabilities. You can also browse to choose an image if you don’t care for the image that appears automatically.   Next, you can select keyboard strokes to press to exit the application and return to Media Center. Click the green plus (+) button. When prompted, press a key you’ll use to close the program. Repeat the process if you’d also like to select a keystroke to kill the program.   You’ll see your button programs listed below. When you’re finished, save your work and close out of Media Center Studio.   Now your new program entry point will appear in the Entry Points section. Drag the icon to the desired position on the Start Menu and save again before exiting Media Center Studio. When you open Media Center you will see your new application on the start menu. Click the tile to open the application just as you would any other tile. The application will open and minimize Media Center. When you press the key you choose to close the program, Windows Media Center will automatically be restored. Note: You can also exit the application through normal methods by clicking the red “X” or File > Exit. Conclusion Media Center Studio is a Beta application which the developer freely admits still has some bugs. Despite it’s flaws Media Center Studio is a powerful tool, and when it comes to customizing your Media Center start menu, it’s pretty much the only game in town. It works with both Vista and Windows 7, and according to the developer, has not been officially tested with extenders. • dual boot xp/xp, now win7/xp getting no xp

  I have a laptop on which I have two drives with separate XP installs, one barebones for music production, the other "normal" XP with Office etc. (Unfortunately the bios won't give a boot disk choice) Normally I would be presented with two WinXPs on booting. Selecting the second one would get me into the "normal installation on disk 1 (C).Selecting the first in boot order would give me D: (disk 2) withe barebones XP. However, I installed Windows 7 Home onto disk 1 (C:), but there were no dual boot options anymore, even though I installed DualBoot Pro and added WinXP disk D:. The options now show show up, but seletcing Win XP just turns into a reboot back to where I started. Any help would be much appreciated

Then you will definitely want to have a look at Kingsoft Office Suite Free 2012, which you can download as a suite or as individual apps. As soon as the installation has completed you will see this window. All relevant file types are checked by default, but you may deselect any that you do not want associated with Kingsoft Office before clicking Close. Special Note: See further below for additional information about the extra formats (i.e. Office 2007 & 2010) that the suite will open. Here is a quick overall view of what the Writer App window looks like. Each of the three apps in the suite will open with the New Document Pane displayed by default on the right side of the window. A closer view of the upper left corner in Writer, Presentation, and Spreadsheets… A look at the Start Menu options available… In our tests with the suite it opened up Microsoft Office 2007 & 2010 documents without any problems. Note: You can also see part of the built-in Tab Bar outlined in red in the upper left corner. • Windows 7 Starter Screensaver Program Original Files

  Dear Sir or Madam I used the program by Sopan and Javier to change the wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter Edition on my laptop and it worked fine. I have now upgraded to Home Edition but there seems to be remnants of the program still lurking somewhere as when I set photos up for the screensaver they are always stretched no matter what I set the picture position as, ie fill,fit,stretched, tiled or centred. Can Sopan or Javier or anyone else supply original copies please of the files the program modified so that I can over-write the modified files back to the original ones? I know I can re-install the full windows 7 software but I want to save the agony of that along with the re-installation of all my programs and drivers! Many thanks for your help. Mark

  Tough crowd around here it seems.   Let’s get down to the issues. First: spelling…I do not understand how there can be miss-spelled words, as I use spell check (MS Word) and cut and paste my post in to the blog. As to being defensive or complaining. Hmm as I said this is a vent for my frustrations as well letting others know they are not a lone, in Job less land. Warning, warning, warning, complaint coming. I have been out of work for 18 months now. I have gone in person to sites, emailed and phoned places for work (I am thinking of getting a sign with my resume and walking up and down the main drag until, I get a job). So forgive me if I seem a little frustrated in my post. Now one thing some one pointed out really bugs me. The person called me a Holy Roller and made a comment that this is keeping me from a job.  What! I just ordered replacement memory so I can go to 8GB instead of 3GB and now want to see what is available for my CPU. • Time Machine (OSX) doesn't back up files in Mount Point or Disk Image File

  I found this Q&A (http://superuser.com/questions/148849/backup-mounted-drive-of-an-image-in-time-machine) and this prompted me to ask the following question: I have two disk images which are scripted to be mounted on login. These two disk images are always mounted to the same location. These two disk images are encrypted TrueCrypt volumes. Time Machine (TM) will only back up the disk images the first time they are mounted, but not after that. As I modify documents within the volumes throughout the day, the modified timestamps are adjusted properly. However, TM does not back them up. TM never backs up the mount points which are two folders within my home directory. Any ideas as to why neither the mount point or the image files are backed up? Do the image files have to be closed (unmounted) after being modified for TM to back them up? Thanks, Chris

• /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed with an HP LaserJet p3005

  Ever since 10.04, I can't print to an HP laserjet p3005. I'm even using an entirely different computer now with a fresh install of 10.10. I've tried with and without the latest hplip. Recently, sometimes I can get it to print a few things, but eventually it always fails (usually when printing a pdf from the document viewer (also doesn't work with adobe pdf reader)). Sometimes it fails so bad the printer gives an error saying it needs to be turned off and on again. I can't seem to find a fix anywhere, I've googled all over the past year and tried every fix I could find. It does say that the /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed. It also doesn't make a difference if I create the printer using hp-setup or ubuntu's own printing control panel. I delete and re-create the printer, no difference eventually. I use the default printer settings or custom settings, no difference. I can print perfectly find to a networked printer at home - an HP officejet 6310. It seems to be networked HP printers at work that I can't print to anymore (except occasionally right after re-installing the printer driver). What's the recommended way to install HP printer drivers and reset or clean out everything from before. Or where are the right logs to read or debug commands to do to find out what may be the real cause of the printing problems?
