• Published Windows Phone 7 apps: good for the Resume/CV?

  I'm a long time Microsoft developer who has recently started publishing Windows Phone 7 apps to beef up my current C#/.NET skills, and get more direct exposure to WPF/Silverlight, and of course because it is new and cool. So far I've published over 10 apps successfully. Is this a good thing to put on my resume? Does it appear to show a grasp of the latest Microsoft technologies? Any downside seen by potential employers? Would you put this on your resume, if looking for a full time professional Software Engineering position?

• After reinstalling ATI graphics drivers, my keyboard and mous aren't working anymore

  On Ubuntu 11.04 I tried to install the open source drivers for my laptops ATI Mobility Radeon 5470M but I messed that up a bit and lost xserver. Now I've managed to solve that problem with this and by downloading the ATI proprietary drivers and install those manually. Now, when Ubuntu loads up I get to the login screen but I can't use my mouse or my keyboard (usb keyboard and mouse doesn't work either). If I use the recovery console, then login with that and then run 'startx'. I can login fine (though Unity doesn't show, the graphics seem to be working because it shows the fading animation of libnotify), but I can't type or move my mouse.

• Lenovo e530 no wireless Ubuntu 13.04

  For some reason my wireless will not work on my Lenovo e530. I am dual booting ubuntu and windows 8 and my wireless works in windows. I saw online that I should run rfkill. I did that but only bluetooth shows up. There is no difference when I press the wireless fn key either, but it does block bluetooth (as it should). I'm really wanting to get into Ubuntu but this is holding me back. To clarify the wireless device does not show at all after running rfkill.

Now is the time now to branch things off as discussed in the article; http://drilian.com/2009/02/25/lightning-bolts/ Again however i am confused as to the meaning of the following pseudo code; splitEnd = Rotate(direction, randomSmallAngle)*lengthScale + midPoint; I'm unsure how to actually rotate this correctly. In all honesty i'm abit unsure what to-do completely at this part, "splitEnd" will be a Vector3, so whatever happens in the rotate function must then return some form of directional rotation which is then * by a scale to create length and then added to the midPoint. I'm not sure. If someone could explain what i'm meant to be doing in this part that would be really grateful.

• Adsense link units trageting better keywords?

  I have one link unit above my navigation which targets exact keywords on what my site is about, on contrary my adsense for content Leadbord and Wide Skyscraper show ads that are totally opposite from my keyword,while my ctr increased for about 10 times with link unit I noticed cpc is lower also (but that was just based on one day, today is higher). Is it so bad to completly get rid of standard content ads and put link units, because this way I earn so little for that site but I think that is because smart pricing (accidental clicks on ads that my users are not interested)? I earn in whole day with about 25-35 clicks as much as keyword tool shows for only one click,my site is first for the topic? I really don't know what to do.. Has anyone had similar situation or can give some advice?

• How to tell google a blog article has been updated?

  The URL of my posts has the publication date and slugged title, but how can I best show google search users that an article has been updated since its original publication? I was considering devoting a few characters of the meta description (e.g. "updated 2013-Aug-1), or doing so under the first h1 tag. I don't want to hurt the seo value of my site, but I also want to let users know that articles have been substantially updated since their publication. Is there a better way to do this?

• how to launch grub menu for ubuntu guests in virtualbox?

  I have ubuntu 12.04 alpha installed in virtualbox. When the virtual machine is started, it boots directly to the login screen without showing the grub menu. How can I get the grub menu to show up on start? Please note: the graphics is broken after recent updates, so i cannot login and make the changes. it is stuck at the screen "Ubuntu is running on low graphics mode" and the mouse and other keys do not work. • What time planning tools do you use?

  I'm trying to get a better overview of my tasks, and I'm looking for a tool which would let me enter tasks (everything from 2 hour tasks to 2 week tasks) and then simply let me organize these tasks on a timeline. I'm thinking that all tasks would have an estimated duration, and I could then prioritize these tasks by moving them along the timeline to prioritize them. The timeline would then show me the "tasks stack" and how far into the future i'm occupied. I'm not looking for an issue/bug handling system, but simply a tool which lets me get an overview of my tasks. I guess we're more into the category of resource planning. What tools do you use for this?

• What is a good network for full-page rich ads?

  I'm currently developing a website where users will be able to upload content. I would like to be able to show a full-page ad whenever someone tries to view the content. The ad should take up most of the screen, and I should be able to have a "continue to the content --" link at the top.   IE9 started a campaign for kill IE6 from the core because they know that IE6 is a big trouble or  problem for them for promote 9 version of IE. so they started a campaign for killing IE6. next time they kill IE 7 , 8,9 whenever they found this old version have a big problem for them to promote next version of IE.   Why they not make a update system who automatically update the browser and tell user to restart and update goes installed in the user system. well IE9 should learn from all other that they have very well design auto-update system who never give user in trouble that your browser goes old. Chrome and Firefox both update themselves and say user restart to enjoy another good version. in IE6 a big problem is that updates. no one sure that they installed new version of IE6 without any hassles and update goes install without any problem because they really know or care about “you need this to install this and this for this” so they thing “why I update IE whenever I am unsure that my browser goes update and I have no problem again” so they do nothing because their work done with no problem because common person used high profile application who work even in IE6. so they do nothing.    IE6 countdown website have designed a banner for warn or force user to upgrade to next version of IE. well there is no good reason for put the banner on website some of reason are:-   Windows 7 comes with pre-installed IE8 and Vista comes with upgrade version them IE6 so that is sure that you force a user who have Windows XP [luna] and if they want to upgrade IE then they can get IE8 not version 9 because IE9 is design for Windows 7 or Vista Service pack 2. so What is the use of update when user still have a outdate version too because IE8 is old version and not have any capability of HTML5 so forcing user by using the banner have no sense. I am not know why they all listed on website put the banner on their own website. it’s good that you offer user what they want instead of giving them a outdate version of IE again. My means to give a user list of browser they can try to enhance their browser experience instead of only IE.   IE9 build upon WPF and they spent more time on using WPF in IE instead of making user experience browser.  many thing is designed wrongly in IE first thing is tabs. the tabs in chrome are bigger and easily to move and same in Firefox even not have smooth tabbing. IE have same tabbing as chrome have but leak a point that it’s too small. if you really  want to move then sometime they create a problem that they going elsewhere from the current instance of IE.   Chrome have a big buttons, tabs and menu to enhance browser experience and Firefox have a good feature that you can make them bigger or small. you can put the icon for add-ons on the toolbar for easily use but IE have no relation with customization so we never can thinking about that.   When chrome provide lot’s of extensions and a  webstore for browser application and same feature in Firefox can be seen then there is no plugin in IE. really you can see their IE addons Website where no plugin listed for web development. even in the category or tag. as a response from many blog there is new for developer that new version of IE9 developer tool. well IE9 have three new tabs a blogger tell on their blog. when I trying them I found many thing but I still unable to edit the Css from the HTML tab and no plugin I found I can get to enhance IE9 web development. something more other provide never IE9 give me like personas , customization , browser extension or any other they used to tell a small thing customization  .   IE9 still have some problem with JavaScript that when I use Firefox and chrome and logout in both then my cookie is deleted but in IE it’s not done. it’s show me that IE9 still have different from other not for good thing even some bad thing too. When I trying to read a article that is written in Hindi using Unicode font I found that they show many thing misspelled. there is three Sha in Hindi but they all goes wrong in IE. the misprint thing is not that the writing  for the articles goes wrong. it’s problem or browser to rendering a font. the Firefox and chrome not give me this problem even opera render the font in italic style by decrease the font-size but all those work perfect.   in Pwn2Own the apple’s safari  and IE9 both are hacked. this is a awesome news for whose who thing that  open-source is lose in  Security and close-source is highly-secured software. well this is not a good parameter for talking about software. it’s should depend how much application tested and used. because more testing and more use of application make them better.   I  appreciate IE to making their new version 9 and good luck for them. there is a another matter that I personally found nothing on them.

• I'm getting a black screen right after Install Ubuntu option on GRUB menu. Any ideas?

  I've formatted my USB and remade the live USB twice. I tried editing editing the commands (pressing the 'e' key while the command was highlighted on the GRUB menu) by 1. deleting quiet splash and replacing it with nomodeset 2. adding nomodeset right before quiet splash 3. deleting quiet splash and adding radeon.modeset=0 I saw another solution for a fix by editing GRUB but in command line 'sudo' 'nano' and 'update-grub' all show up as unknown commands. I'm brand new to Ubuntu, in case you couldn't tell. I would appreciate any help you could give me. I want to convince my brother that Ubuntu is a better option than iOS but I can't do that if I can't install it. If you need more information, please ask. I'm not dual booting. I want this to be a full install. Thanks.

• Broadcom 4365 wireless driver on 12.04 with 3.4 / 3.5 kernel

  I used this package to install the driver on 3.2 Kernel and it was working perfectly. Unfortunately the system used to freeze randomly with 3.2 kernel so I installed 3.4 kernel, now there is no freezing, the only problem is that my wifi card is not working, I tried to re-install the package, but didn't work. I can see the driver in the "additional drivers" and it say that it is active, but when I execute iwconfig it doesn't show up. I've even tried ndiswraper and that didn't work either. my lspci: 01:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation Device 4365 (rev 01)

  As many know, if you serve a page over https and the content loads resources (images, stylesheets, js, SWF objects, etc) over http, older versions of Internet Explorer will show the user a warning saying "This page contains both secure and non-secure items". This is discomforting to many non-technical users. Usually, I can look at the HTML source and identify which item(s) are triggering this error. Sometimes a Flash object will load something else or some embedded javascript will put a new object in the DOM and trigger this. What tools are good for quickly tracking down the source of the warning?

• Quickly and Python Twisted

  I am creating a Quickly application that makes use of Python Twisted. When the user launches a window, I want to start the Twisted server I wrote. However, when I do this, it freezes the GUI, because the reactor.run method is constantly running after it is started. I need a way to start the Twisted reactor in its own thread, so that the GUI will continue to operate while the reactor is running. I have read about using Twisted with pyGTK in the Twisted documentation, but I am not sure how I would accomplish this with a Quickly application. What is the best way to start my Twisted server when a window opens without freezing the GUI? Update: My if __name__ == '__main__' statement at the end of my dialog file is: print 'Preparing GLib' GLib.idle_add(before_running) print 'Staring Reactor' from twisted.internet import reactor reactor.run()` I have imported and installed twisted.gtk3reactor earlier on in the file. The before_running method contains dialog = ClientDialog() and dialog.show, as well as the rest of the code I want to run when the dialog opens.

  As a follow on to yesterday's blog entry, here's the equivalent starter application for GeoToolkit (also known as Geotk) on the NetBeans Platform, which ends up looking like this: The above is a border.shp file I found on-line, while here's a USA states shape file rendered in the application: Note that the navigation bar is also included, though that could later be migrated into the menu bar of the NetBeans Platform.  Download the Maven based NetBeans Platform application with GeoToolkit integration here: http://java.net/projects/nb-api-samples/sources/api-samples/show/versions/7.3/tutorials/geospatial/geotoolkit/MyGeospatialSystem It was quite tricky getting this sample together, parts of it, especially the installer, which creates the database, comes from the Puzzle GIS project, while the files come from on-line locations, with the JAI-related dependencies providing problems of their own. • How do I know which file a program is trying to access?

  I have a program which I am trying to run, however when I run it; it just complains that it can't find a particular file. However I have no idea which folder it is trying to find this particular file in. I have a copy of the required file, I just need to know which folder to copy it too. Is there any way to show in real time which files are being accessed or which files are trying and failing to be accessed? I am using Ext4 filesystem if that helps. Thanks

• BDD in a .NET environment

  I've seen BDD in action (in this case using SpecFlow and Selenium in a .NET environment) for a small test project. I was very impressed - mainly due to the fact that the language used to specify the acceptance tests meant they engaged with the product owner much more easily. I'm now keen to bring this into my current organisation. However I'm asked 'who else uses this?' and 'show me some case-studies'. Unfortunately I cannot find any 'big names' (or even 'small names' for that matter!) of companies who are actively using BDD. I have two questions really: Is BDD adopted by companies out there? Who are they? How can BDD be implemented in an agile .NET environment and are there any significant drawbacks to doing it?

• Dropbox icon dissapears right after login

  Even though Dropbox's app indicator dissapearing from the tray area seems like a recurrent enough problem, my issue is a litte different. When I login, I can see the app panel populating, and the dropbox icon does indeed appear (config'd as startup application), but after some other icons show up (bluetooth, battery, etc.) it's gone. It's still running though. I'm guessing it's having issues with staying pinned, and I don't know how to start addressing this problem. I have tried many if not all solutions provided here in the forums for the "icon missing" questions. So far: I've whitelisted everything regarding panel Uninstalled-reinstalled (with and without rebooting in between) Overwritten current installation Purged installation from terminal Installed from Software Center and from .deb file batch deleted every "dropbox" ocurrences from terminal (files and folders) and reinstalled Ran sudo apt-get install libappindicator1, it installed, but didn't solve anything I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - 64 bits. Any insight would me much appreciated!

• Way to make Shotwell use ffmpegthumbnailer instead of Totem for thumbnails?

  Totem never works right in my experience. My latest problem is that totem will not display some video Thumbnails. I fixed the problem by installing ffmpegthumbnailer and using this to generate thumbnails. But unfortunately it appears to have only fixed the problem within Nautilus. Shotwell, it seems, is still relying on Totem for its thumbnails because all the same videos that Totem wouldn't show Thumbnails for, Shotwell still won't either--even though Nautilus is now showing thumbnails for them because of ffmpegthumbnailer. How do I get Shotwell to use ffmpegthumbnailer instead of Totem for video thumbnails?
