• Comments in code

  It is a good practice to leave comments in your code.  Knowing what the hell you were thinking or later intending can be salvation for yourself or the poor soul coming behind you.  Comments can leave clues to why you chose one approach over the other.  Perhaps staged re-engineering dictated that coding practices vary.One thing that should not be left in code as comments is old code.  There are many free tools that left you version your code.  Subversion is a great tool when used with TortoiseSVN.  Leaving commented code scattered all over will cause you to second guess yourself, all distraction to the real code, and is just bad practice.If you have a versioning solution, take time to go back through your code and clean things up.  You may find that you can remove lines and leave real comments that are far more knowledgeable than having to remember why you commented out the old code in the first place.

• Why does the Git community seem to ignore side-by-side diffs

  I used to use Windows, SVN, Tortoise SVN, and Beyond Compare. It was a great combination for doing code reviews. Now I use OSX and Git. I've managed to kludge together a bash script along with Gitx and DiffMerge to come up with a barely acceptable solution. I've muddled along with this setup, and similar ones, for over a year. I've also tried using the Github diff viewer and the Gitx diff viewer, so it's not like I've not given them a chance. There are so many smart people doing great stuff with Git. Why not the side-by-side diff with the option of seeing the entire file? With people who have used both, I've never heard of anyone that likes the single +/- view better, at least for more than a quick check.

  I've a problem that I can't find the solution for on the web. I have a blog that has PR 1 and it's subdomain "aaaa.domain.com" that "domain.com" is a blog server. Now I want buy a domain "newdomain.com" and I want tell google webmaster to redirect the old subdomain to this new domain and send traffic to my new domain. I can't access .htaccess to use a 301 redirect. The only thing that I can do is put html code in the html. How can I do this? When I use "Change of Address" in google webmaster it say:"Restricted to root level domains only".

• Tips or techniques to use when you don't know how to code something?

  I have a background as UI designer. And I realized that it is a bit hard for me to write a pieces of logic. Sometimes I get it right, but most of the time, I end up with something hacky (and it usually takes a lot of time). And is not that I don't like programming, in fact, I'm starting to like it as much as design. It's just that sometimes I think that I'm better at dealing with colors an shapes, rather than numbers and logic (but I want to change that). What I usually do is to search the solution on the Internet, copy the example, and insert it into my app (I know this is not a very good practice). I've heard that one tip was to write the logic in common English as comment before writing the actual code. What other tips and techniques I can use?

• Ubuntu - Psychonauts - Camera involentarily listing to the right

  I've recently purchased the Humble Bundle V and have been having an absolute riot with the games given. The one problem I'm running into though, is that whenever I launch Psychonauts and run a game, the Camera lists to the right slowly and I can't get it to stop. Strangely enough when I zoom in (with z), it lists to the left. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and if there was a solution. Maybe it's even the mouse configs I currently have on the laptop that interacts strangely with 3D environments.

• can not get Toshiba tv to full resolution

  I have a 23inch Toshiba model#23L1350U that I am using as a computer monitor via VGA plug; it is a full 1080P resolution TV but in Ubuntu it shows up as a Toshiba 72inch Television and wont go past the resolution 1366 by 1768. Has anyone came up with a solution to this problem..I used to get full 1080 resolution with my Insignia 32 inch TV so I know my hardware can push the signal, I am running a Radeon x1550 graphics cars 3200+ processor on a 756 chip set 64bit version of Ubuntu 13.04 your help is greatly appreciated and you may or may not be compensated for your time

  Hi all, I used to be a technical lead in a group of 3-5 programmers. Tech lead's responsibilities here would include thinking of/designing overall solution architecture, coding, refactoring, being the first to dive into the next big thing, reviewing others' code, sitting on customer meetings and answering endless questions from the rest of the team. Now I'm moving on to a branch-level position (in a branch of ~60 people), which entails pretty much the same, sans maybe the coding/refactoring part. Still kinda a tech lead, but the title "tech lead" is already being used and means something else - a group-level tech lead. Please help me come up with a good job title. I need something for my e-mail signature and, eventually, resume.

• Efficient way of detecting a touched object in a game?

  Imagine a Sims-like 2D game for a touch based mobile phone where one can interact with virtually any object in the scene. How can I efficiently detect which object is being touched by the player? In my short experience, looping through all the visible objects in the scene and checking if they're touched has so far done the job, but when there may be many many moving objects in the screen that sounds kind of inefficient isn't it? Keeping the visible moving objects list can consume time in itself as one may have to loop through all of them each frame. Other solutions I've thought are: Spatial hashing. Divide the screen as a grid and place the visible objects in the corresponding bucket. Detection of the clicked object is fast but there's additional overhead for placing the objects in the correct bucket each frame. Maintaining a quad-tree. Moving objects have to be rearranged all the time, the previous solution looks better. What is usually done in this case?

  I am having 1200 face images in my training set.There are 2989 test face images. I am using eigen faces (PCA) for feature extraction. I am using kmeans clustering. Source code I tried: IDX = kmeans(z,5); clustercount=accumarray(IDX, ones(size(IDX))); disp(clustercount); Problem: Images are not clustered properly. Same faces should be clustered. But different faces are being clustered. Questions: Should I have to use still more face images for training? How accuracy of clustering can be achieved? What is the solution?

  Where are you supposed to store InputLayout? Suppose i have some basic structure like. class Mesh { List<MeshPart> MeshParts } class MeshPart { Effect Effect; VertexBufferBinding VertexBuffer; ... } Where should I store input layout? It's a connection between vertex buffer and specific pass, i can live with just 1 pass but I still have diffferent techniques so i need at least an array with some connection to effecttechniques, but I would appriciate something not crazy like dictionary.   Say I have to have terms of use on site, a place the text as marked up html. Where it is better to prepare this document initially if it is going to placed to the web? Considering that such documents are prepared and changed by lawyers, it is not very applicable for them to use text editor. And it is not very efficient to manually process content to prepare it for the web as it is changed. For now my solution is: Prepare document text in google docs keeping some simple structure (title, ordered lit of features, simple paragraphs), save as html (it will contain some unnecessary markup) and then use custom conversion tool (some script) to convert saved html from google docs to simple html and inject new version to the site. What is common practiceses for this problem? What is the workflow of preparing and publishing such documents.

• Internet Connection Problems

  I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 onto a laptop. There is no list of automatic connections when I click on the internet connection symbol. Enable Wireless was unchecked, so I checked it. However, it continues saying "wireless is disabled." Soft is blocked, and when I tried rfkill unblock wifi it told me that the device was not ready. I tried to counter this with what I found on this thread but nothing worked. I have tried manually entering my Wireless information, but this does not help. Is there a solution?

  This is the presentation I did tonight at PHILLYNJ.NET.  It is the first in a multi-part of a series on the Applied Design Patterns.   The solution files are working code with design pattern notes in the comment blocks. After the overview and higher level discussions on Enterprise Design Patterns I reviewed the low level Database Access Library of code.  With walk-throughs of the the code and unint test. After that we went through the ProductPhotoConsoleTest Application that performed intergration testing of the DBAccess Class with the AdventureWorks ProductPhoto table extracting the photos and writing them to a file folder.   I am new to ubuntu and have stared using it since a week. I installed ubuntu server 11.10 on a VM created using VMWare player. Once installed, i tried to install ubuntu desktop using sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop Now I am unable to boot and i get the following error *PulseAudio configured per-user session After this, nothing happens and the ubuntu server does not boot. I read in another Q&A, the same problem and the solution. Just Installed a CLI system then ubuntu-desktop, does not boot automatically My question is how to modify noacpi option. How do i get into the boot for the ubuntu server? I have read on the net that by hitting the shift button, we can get into the boot options. I tried that, but no success, probably since i am running ubuntu on VMWare Player. Please guide me on how to solve this problem

• How to apply a filter to the screen of a running program?

  The idea is to take old games without modifying them, but have the graphics card apply a series of filters to their output before sending them to the monitor. A very crude example would be to take a game that has a resolution of 640x480 and do: Increase the resolution to 1280x960 Apply a blur (low pass filter) Apply a sharpen (1 + high pass filter) These steps may not necessarily be the best to improve the visuals of an old game, but there are a lot of techniques that are well-known in image processing for this purpose. The question is, do the (NVidia) graphics cards give the ability to load a program that modifies the screen before sending it to the monitor? If so, how are they called and what terminology should I use to search? I would be comfortable with doing the programming myself if this ability is part of a library. Also, would the solution be different between Windows and Linux? If so, either is fine, since most of the games are probably runnable by wine.

I read this and I have video in HDMI monitor with Bumblebee and this commands: optirun nvidia-settings -c :8 DISPLAY=:8.0 firefox I have created a second keyboard/mouse master group with xinput with this solution. The problem: The second monitor (Display 8) doesn't recognize the keyboard/mouse and I cant use it. The question: Do you know some command to attach the keyboard/mouse master group to Display 8? I think that xinput -set-cs may work but it does not.

  I am working on my first major (several hundred pages) website design and development project. I want to create subdirectories for each of the website's categories, which in turn have their own subdirectories for easy user navigation. Example: website.com/directory. I am aware that by placing an index.html file within each directory, the browser automatically detects and navigates to that page, but that seems like a messy solution (having multiple index.html files, albeit in distinct folders), and I cannot imagine everyone does that. So my question is...how do you properly organize and use subdirectories?

  How would I go about compiling an accurate database of IP addresses and their related countries to make available as an open source download for any web developer who wants to perform a geographic IP lookup? It seems that a company called MaxMind has a monopoly on geographic IP data, because most online tutorials I've seen for country lookups based on IP addresses start by suggesting a subscription to MaxMind's paid service (or their less accurate free 'Lite' version). I'm not completely averse to paying for their solution or using the free one, but the concept of an accurate open source equivalent that anyone can use without restriction appeals to me, and I think it would be useful for the web development community. How is geographic IP data collected, and how realistic is it to hope to maintain an up-to-date open version?

• Ubuntu 12.04LTS loads straight to terminal!! startx doesn't work!

  I have been using ubuntu 12.04LTS for last few months, and now suddenly something has happened to it. As a result, terminal opens on every start up when I login . Although, if i login as a guest, it works fine. I have already used startx command, and tried reinstalling the desktop as well but it doesn't work! If I use ctrl+alt+f9, terminal screen vanishes and a black screen appears, and then nothing happens after that. ctrl+alt+f1 takes me to the command prompt. I know similar questions have been asked here, but i could not find a solution for my laptop. Please help!!
