• VS2005 and VSS. Should .exes, .dlls, pdbs, .resource and generated .xml files go in VSS?

  It seems like the following type of files need to be writable to be able to compile a solution. .exe .dll .pdb (if debugging) .resource (?) .xml (at least the system generated ones. I'm not sure if they are just all XML documentationf iles) If they were checked in and could only be overwritten by the compiler by the person who had them checked out, then checking them into sourcesafe and requiring a checkout to modify them, which is attemtped by the compiler each time you run, would interfer with other developer's ability to debug and run. What is the best practice? It seems like VSS automatically adds everything.

  Hello all, I'm looking to purchase a jquery book. I'm a strong C# developer whose had experience with dojo. Now, I'm building my own site and am looking to learn a new platform in the process. So, I've chosen jquery. With dojo, I know how to make my own widgets. I want to learn about ways to plug into jquery to make reusable controls. Also, I plan to make heavy use of json with ajax. Other things to consider: I would call my javascript expertise as intermediate. I'd like to find a book that is as up to date with the jquery platform as possible as I know that in a few months it will likely be out of date. What book or books would you reccomend?

  Hello stackers, I was arguing about an S3 like aproach using authorization hash with a secret key as the seed and some data on the request as the message signed with hmac sha1 (Amazon S3 way) vs an other developer supporting symetric encryption of the data with a secret key known by the emiter and the server. What are the advantage of using signed data with hmac sha1 vs symetric key other than the fact that with the former, we do not need to encrypt the username or password. What would be the hardest to break ? symetric encryption or sha1 hashing at la S3 ? If all big players are using oauth and similar without symetric key it is sure that there are obvious advantages, what are those ?

  I'm about to create an development enviroment for a little developer company(3-4 developers + some testers). Our development platform is .NET and Oracle. My question is how to structure the whole enviroment.How many servers do I need ? Should be one server for developers and one for testers ? I'd like to have one build server (TeamCity). Where to put the Subversion ? Visual Studio's would be on developers laptops. Do I need one database for development and one extra for build server ? What else could be helpful ??

  Today I upgraded to Android SDK 2.3 and I also upgraded the Eclipse Plugin Androi Developer Tools 8.0 (from 0.9.9). I also upgraded my Java Development Kit to 1.6_22. Now in Eclipse I get many errors in all my Android projects. The error messages are like: The type java.lang.Object cannot be resolved. It is indirectly referenced from required .class files. How can I fix this so I can use my Android projects again? In the Build Path for these projects, I don't have any references to an android.jar but a message: Unable to get system library for project

• Why is there no Microsoft Certified Master program targetted at developers?

  In the lower level certifications, developer technology is all over the place. At the highest level (Microsoft Certified Architect), the Solutions track appears to be a good fit for high level application designers and architects. MCA requires an MCM as a prerequisite. However, none of the MCM tracks are targeted towards development. Obviously to be a good architect you need to have knowledge of other technologies, servers, sql, messaging etc. But those seem like things that should be part of the course load, and not the sole focus. Are the lower tiers really as high as you can go for application focused professionals? For most developers, the SQL MCM seems to be the best fit. Are the MCM and MCA really targeted ad more administrators and not developers?

• Does the box API require case-sensitive booleans?

  I'm having some issues with the box.com developer API, and it seems that this is due to the API requiring lower-case booleans in request parameters. When I make a call to say, delete a folder, the URI my framework is generating looks like this: (DELETE) https://api.box.com/2.0/folders/1234?recursive=True This doesn't work, and the API throws an error. However, if I manually set the URI to this: (DELETE) https://api.box.com/2.0/folders/1234?recursive=true Everything seems to work just fine. I'd like to confirm that this is indeed the behavior, and if it is, I'd like to request box fix their API!

I have followed all the steps given in http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/SearchManager.html I am getting the following exception 04-16 12:49:26.917: ERROR/DatabaseUtils(102): java.lang.SecurityException: Permission Denial: reading com.android.providers.telephony.MmsSmsProvider uri content://mms-sms/search_suggest_query/m?limit=58 from pid=106, uid=10000 requires android.permission.READ_SMS I have set permission in MmsSmsProvider.java file for read, write sms and global search, but still I get this error. The idea is that they will come see "how parents work", "how cool stuff is done", have fun, etc. Kids will be up to 17 years old. Now I suppose some of the teenagers already think of what they wanna do when they finally grow up and will ask questions like "how can I tell I should get a degree in software engineering and not in logistics/finances/whatever?"   Like a lot of people on Stack Overflow I love to read books about programming, almost as much as I love to read the lists that people add onto their websites, Blog's and this very website. However, for every gem there are a thousand turds, and to one developer a gem could just be a shiny turd to another. Whilst there are hundreds of book questions on this website asking users to recommend books that they have loved I have decided (after looking for a similar question and not finding it) to create a list of books that users have detested. After all, if we're going to fork out money for these books it'd be a good idea to get both positive and negative aspects out there. Please refer to a specific book, and with it add an image of either the latest version or the version you have read. • Silverlight + Facebook DTK API -> SecurityException ONLY on Mac and Firefox...

  I have a SilverLight application which throws a security exception when running on FireFox for Macs. The exact same application works fine on Windows (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome, Opera) and on Safari for Macs. I am using the Facebook Developer Toolkit available on Codeplex. The exception is thrown when the user launches the App. At that time I use the SilverLight Facebook API to run some queries using: facebookAPI.Fql.MultiqueryAsync(queries, QueryAppUsersCompleted, dispatcher); In my callback function QueryAppUsersCompleted, the FacebookException does not evaluate to null, and its innerException property has a SecurityException in it. Any help would be tremendously appreciated.

  Apart from http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/g-app-intents.html (which is quite good but fairly limited in the number of apps/uri's it covers) I've been unable to find a decent reference source for looking up URI's to use when integrating with google apps. I'm currently working on triggering the "add new contact" UI, and have found that the tel: uri pattern seems to work, but what if I only have a name and an email? I wouldn't have expected I'd need to rely on sample code / trial and error, but I really can't see anywhere where the intent/URI interface is supposed to be documented in android apps. Does such a standard exist? Is there some quasi standard / user database that I can consult? On a platform with such a good inter-interoperability architecture it just seems like something so useful I can't believe it's not there

• Getting started with Android code samples - permissions error

  New to android. Running Eclipse on Ubuntu 9.10 with Android SDK plugin installed and working. Trying to get some code samples from http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/get.html , and following its procedure to load said samples in Eclipse yields: Parent of resource: /home/user/android-sdk/platforms/android-4/samples/Notepad/.project is marked as read-only. chmod is not recursive, so I entered ~/android-sdk/platforms and "chmod 777 *" ie. all folders in /platforms. Still doesnt work. Appears to be be a bug in Eclipse that wants to create the project in the SDK folder rather than under ~/workspace.

• Recommend a local LDAP store for development

  Our project uses an LDAP repository for storing users. In production this will be Active Directory. For development, we seem to have a couple of options: Install an AD LDS instance that everyone uses Install an AD LDS instance on every developer machine We're trying to keep the 'F5' experience as lightweight as possible, so installing things or relying on a central AD store aren't my favorite ideas. There are other LDAP servers, like Open LDAP. I was hoping there might be an LDAP server that simply talks to an XML file. This would allow us to store the XML file in source control and have something that is fast and works. Our nightly builds would still use AD to pick up any differences, but the hope is since we're using LDAP it should Just Work. Can you recommend an LDAP implementation that works well for zero-config shared-nothing development?

  I am a C++/C# developer and never spent time working on web pages. I would like to put text (randomly and diagonally perhaps) in large letters across the background of some pages. I want to be able to read the foreground text and also be able to read the "watermark". I understand that is probably more of a function of color selection. Please add a root view or layout to your document." and I noticed there is a new file generated called "activity_main.out.xml". What could I be doing wrong?

Different developers will use the control to display the same information in many different applications. The control must always be displayed at the bottom of the parent form in every application. It must always be as wide as the form. When the form is resized, the control should be resized and repositioned accordingly. How should I do that in the best way and why? • Suggestions for a good IDE for DB2

  Hi all, I know, I know... it's a horrible fate but I am forced to work in an environment with DB2 on the back end. OK just kidding but the truth is I do like MSSQL's data studio a lot, and well IBM's tool is sorda crummy in my opinion... I was using the free version of Toad but I just got a new 64bit machine which is nice and all but there isn't a free version of Toad that I can find for win7 64. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good IDE to use with DB2? Being a developer I really just do a lot of looking at the DB structure and querying to see what I get back and how I want to get things back etc... Thanks for any advice!

• Getting started with C++ ( the paradigm shift from Python )

  I want to learn C++ so that i can develop C++ Python modules for server-related stuff. I'm a purely dynamic languages developer (Python, PHP, Ruby, etc). I want to learn a fast language, and if I'm going to do this, I'd rather learn a really fast language like C++. Before I even get started though, I understand that suddenly working with static types, a different syntax, and compiling code will be quite the paradigm shift. • How do I find the Recaptcha ID?

  I've been stuck on something for the past day. I'm building a RoR bot, and part of it involves signing up for an email account with mail.com. I've automated all the filling out of the form, apart from the captcha (Recaptcha). I'll be using the deathbycaptcha Ruby gem. However, in order to have the captcha solved, I'll need to get either its ID or its URL. While this shows up when I "enable form details" with the Firefox Web Developer toolbar, it doesn't seem to be in the source. How can I find it out? I'm using Watir. Thanks! Joe
