  Being mostly self-taught freestyle developer and having no experience of working in teams of professionals in serious software companies, having only a very general idea of how the software development is should really be done, I think I've came to a point, when I begin struggling from lack of order in my work. I think I should get acquainted with professional software development technologies to optimize my own productivity and to extend my choice of work by increasing capabilities to work in teams and bigger companies. • iPhone c++ development / compiler on a non-Mac PC? (Windows? Linux?)

  According to the (in)famous iPhone Developer Program License Agreement change 3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. So it is allowed to develop iPhone apps using C++ My questions Is there a compiler / IDE for developing iPhone apps using C++? Is that compiler / IDE available on non Mac environments? (Windows? Linux?) If not, why? I mean an eclipse C++ plugin for iPhone development will be quite popular, or is there already any serious attempt to do that?

There are tons of technical details what is behind the scene and I feel people enthusiasm with ability to customize widgets as never before. I remember those days when VCL library (Delphi) appeared and there was the same enthusiasm in VCL widgets area. Ability to create VCL controls was nearly the must when you was applying for a job as Delphi developer. This situation continued for several years till professional sophisticated 3'd party UI libraries appeared. Hardly you'll have to create your own VCL widget nowadays. Will WPF widgets enthusiasm die as VCL one?

  Often I find some really cool javascript one liners that you can copy and paste into your browser address bar in order to get some fancy effects or even useful ones. This, for example, will let you edit anything on the page. javascript:document.body.contentEditable='true'; document.designMode='on'; void 0 What is your favorite? EDIT: I know that technically all these snippets are just javascript scripts that gets evaluated by the browser as if they were defined in the page. I also know that many browsers have got extensions to let you run javascript code (also letting you store scripts somewhere, providing a good editor etc etc). However that's not so practical; I'm not a javascript developer, haven't got firebug installed, and I can't install it anywhere I go. My idea idea is that of collecting the best "mini-scripts" that whoever can just copy and paste in his browser without the need of installing extensions and stuff.

• What do you tell people your profession is? [closed]

  My technical title is Member of the Technical Staff, and like you most of you, I design/write code for a living. I can never decide what to answer when someone asks what I do for a living? Software Developer? Software Engineer? [Kernel] Programmer? Computer Scientist? These all seem to have various bad connotations. I guess I like Software Engineer the best, but unfortunately this term has been coopted by people who don't actually code. I made the mistake of taking a 'Software Engineering' class, and realized that I definitely don't want to be associated with people who major in this. Probably this is too subjective, so feel free to community wiki it or whatever, but I think it is a valid question and I would like to hear what others have decided on and their reasoning.

• What should i do to practise?

  Hi guys I start a year long industrial placement in september where i will be coding in java predominantly. I am going to use the summer to brush up on my java as in year one of the degree java was the main language taught for OOP modules. However this year i have had no java exposure except for an algorithms module, which was one of eight, so as you can see i am probably getting really rusty!. What i wanted to know is, how does the "real world" java programming differ from university coding and what do you suggest i brush up on that would be different to my normal workings. As a start i definatley need to get familiar with a professional IDE like netbeans, opoosed to havign used BlueJ throughout but more specifically what coding practises should i get more familiar with I appreciate they wont expect me to be a qualified full developer and will give me time, but i would like to hit the ground running as it were, with me having full hopes to secure a perminant position after i finish my degree. • DotNetNuke adds wrong module to page

  I've deployed DotNetNuke 07.03.02 to Azure using Azure's own wizard - worked fine. Been using DNN for years on personal server without issues. However, when I try to add a module to a page (i.e regular editing) DNN adds the wrong module to the page; seemingly FirstOrDefault from the list of installed modules. I.E, I want to add the "HTML" module (or any other) to a page but instead I get the "Banners" module. If I then uninstall the the Banners module it now adds the "Modules list" module. See below example, where I'm editing the "About" page of my site and have tried to add the HTML module. I hope anyone with insight into DNN (on Azure) can provide info. I am a .Net developer, but have so far had no reason to dig into DNN's inner workings.

• Anyone run recurring payments in their website? Preferably; Paypal API

  I'm wrapping up my startup and will need to implement Paypal API into my sign up page. Does anyone use recurring payments via Paypal API integrated into their billing? Better yet, guide me to a trustable developer with experience or will I have to use Elance? I need it to go to a welcome/get started screen in their logged in account once they hit the 'create account' button after filling out billing info. I was also wondering, can you leave the CSC (3 digit security code) field out with integration, because it makes things very hard for recurring payments. I'd like to stick with Paypal, as I have been very satisfied with them for a few years now; I already checked out Chargify, authorize.net, etc. I'd love to see someone with something like this set up already to take a look at and ask a few questions.

  I'm a PHP Developer and Web Designer. In my work a partner asked me if I could set up a Google Cloud Messaging server. I read the documentation but couldn't find a clear tutorial to set up this server. I got no knowleadge about Java so it makes my job harder. I could "compile" a war file using ant as GCM Demo Tutorial says. But I can't deploy it to my AppEngine server to try it out (It's my first time using AppEngine too). And/or, how long before there will be certain regulated certifications before you can call yourself a "software developer", like Architects and Engineers have now?   Hi, I am a web developer using C#. I would like to experiment with Windows shell programming in C#. Many people suggests that using managed applications for shell program, is dangerous. (Creation of separate instances for each process versus in process shell. Also version dependency) Frankly speaking, I am totally new to shell. Is there a book available, that will treat these topics; both through managed code and unmanaged code (but mostly towards managed code)? • Put a program in the system tray at startup

  Hi I followed the commonly-linked tip for reducing an application to the system tray : http://www.developer.com/net/csharp/article.php/3336751 Now it works, but there is still a problem : my application is shown when it starts ; I want it to start directly in the systray. I tried to minimize and hide it in the Load event, but it does nothing. Edit : I could, as a poster suggested, modify the shortcut properties, but I'd rather use code : I don't have complete control over every computer the soft is installed on. I don't want to remove it completely from everywhere except the systray, I just want it to start minimized. Any ideas ? Thanks

• Oracle data provider hangs IIS worker process when web site is stopped

  We're experiencing a nasty issue in Oracle 11g Release 2 where the w3wp process takes over and entire processor core, and debugging shows that the Oracle data provider is throwing ThreadAbortExceptions infinitely. A developer found this issue by doing the following: 1) Browse a web site that uses Oracle data connections locally (http://localhost/OracleWebSite) - we use IIS, not the ASP.NET dev server, for all of our sites. This ensures that the w3wp process is running and that an active Oracle pool of connections exists in the app pool. 2) Stop the web site (or perform a Rebuild All operation in Visual Studio on the web site in question). Our Oracle connection handling in the affected applications (all Oracle web apps) is well-established and robust. This issue does not occur if we disable connection pooling. This issue does not occur in Oracle 11g Release 1.

• How do I access a DIV from javascript when using a master page?

  I have a web page that contains a "div" element. On the page, there is javascript to reference the div: document.getElementById('divId'). This was working fine until another developer redesigned the page to use an ASP master page. Now, document.getElementById('divId') returns null. It appears that ASP.net prepends some characters to the names of elements within contents forms when you use a master page. How can I know what the id of the div is when the page loads? Update Allow me to give a specific example to clarify the question: My page had a div with ID divNotice. After changing my page to use a master page, I see when I print the source to the page that renders that the div ID is ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_divNotice. My question is, how am I supposed to know what the div ID is going to be when the framework is done with it?

  Hi guys, I'd like to create a website with similar concept as 'Hot or Not' where users need to sign up to the website and then upload photos. Each photo can be given a description and some additional fields. Other users may comment and rate the photo entries. On top of that, users may favourite/bookmark (and remove) any photo entries and they're accessible via their profile page That's generally how the website will be. Can't decide on a CMS to use Somehow I'm at a crossroad here. I've done some research and found that Joomla has an extension that is able to pull this website off but the thing is I'm not that comfortable with using Joomla. I work with WordPress most of the time, but I can't seem to figure out how would I build this website with WordPress. Would using BuddyPress make it work? Would hiring a plugin developer to customize some plugins work? What do you guys think?

• PHP Array Efficiency and Memory Clarification

  When declaring an Array in PHP, the index's may be created out of order...I.e Array[1] = 1 Array[19] = 2 Array[4] = 3 My question. In creating an array like this, is the length 19 with nulls in between? If I attempted to get Array[3] would it come as undefined or throw an error? Also, how does this affect memory. Would the memory of 3 index's be taken up or 19? Also currently a developer wrote a script with 3 arrays FailedUpdates[] FailedDeletes[] FailedInserts[] Is it more efficient to do it this way, or do it in the case of an associative array controlling several sub arrays "Failures" array(){ ["Updates"] => array(){ [0] => 12 [1] => 41 } ["Deletes"] => array(){ [0] => 122 [1] => 414 [1] => 43 } ["Inserts"] => array(){ [0] => 12 } }

• Constantly changing frameworks/APIs - how do we keep up?

  This question isn't really for any specific technology but more of general developer question. We all know from experience that things change. Frameworks evolve, new features are added and stuff gets removed. For example, how might a product using version 1.0 of the "ABC" framework adapt when version 2.0 comes along (ABC could be .NET, Java, Cocoa, or whatever you want)? One solution might be to make the frameworks backward compatible; so that code written for 1.0 will still work in version 2.0 of the framework. Another might be to selectively target only version 1.0 of the framework, but this might leave many fancy new features unused (many .NET 2.0 apps seem to do this) Any thoughts on what we as developers should do as best practice to keep our technologies up to date, whilst not breaking our applications?

I've set the two defines (__WARN & __TRACE) I've included the .h file () I've added some macros, and everything compiles & links fine. But when I run the application (in DEBUG mode), no debug output file is created. What am I missing here?

• Qt on Mac: where to find "configure"

  hi, I am very new to Mac. I downloaded QT SDK Mac Open source (http://get.qt.nokia.com/qtsdk/qt-sdk-mac-opensource-2010.02.dmg) and installed the Package. I can run qmake, build samples and run demos, but I cannot run configure (in order to build the Qt libraries statically). It says: -bash: No such file or directory. Documentation says I should run this in the "Qt root folder", but what is this folder in Mac? I looked for it in /usr/bin, /usr/local/Qt4.6, /Developer/Tools/Qt. Anyway, what is "configure" on Mac. is it an executable or a script? Thanks a lot

• Does this popup view violate HIGS?

  Will using a popup view to present a comment submission form violate the HIGS? I may have one popup with selections that goes to the final popup. Two popups back to back. This is more similar to a modal type of view than an alert or action sheet as described by the HIGS: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/MobileHIG/ModalViews/ModalViews.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40006556-CH11-SW1 under the section 'Using Modal Views'. Basically the type of view I'm shooting for is a combination of an alert with a custom view. It's sort of a mini view since it will be centered in the middle of the screen but not take up all of the viewing area. I'm fairly sure that is a violation however, but I'm looking for a few opinions on it. I believe what needs to happen is use a modal view, which will cover the entire view.

How do you rank these considerations for you? What does affect you most when you decide to apply pattern? I wonder how many times code reusability (especially for MVP, MVC patterns) was important? For example DAL library often shared between projects (it's reusable) but how often controllers/views (abstracted via interfaces) are reused?
