• Tell Tomcat to drop requests instead of dying "All threads (150) are currently busy"

  My Tomcat 6.0.26 sometimes dies saying: SEVERE: All threads (150) are currently busy, waiting. Increase maxThreads (150) or check the servlet status ... then Tomcat shuts down, and users can't access the webapp until I restart Tomcat manually. Some of the threads indeed take a long time to execute, it is by-design, not a thread-gone-wild problem. I know I could increase maxThreads, but that is not a viable solution, because the server might receive requests even more requests. QUESTION: Instead of dying, can I tell Tomcat to just drop requests when maxThreads is reached and the AJP/1.3 backlog is full? • Public-to-Public IPSec tunnel: NAT confusion

  I know this is possible -- and apparently fairly common with larger companies that don't/can't route private addresses for overlap reasons -- but I can't wrap my head around how to get this to work. I'm playing around with pfSense, Vyatta and a Cisco 5505 right now, hardware-wise. So here's my setup: WEST: Vyatta outside: 10.0.0.254/24 inside: 172.16.0.1/24 machine a: 172.16.0.200/24 EAST: Cisco 5505 outside: 10.0.0.210/24 inside: 192.168.10.1 machine b (webserver): 192.168.10.2 So what we're trying to do is this: route traffic across the tunnel from machine A to machine B without using private addresses. i.e. 172.16.0.200 makes a TCP request to 10.0.0.210:80, and as far as EAST is concerned, it sees a src IP of 10.0.0.254. On WEST, I have your typical many-to-one Source NAT to translate 172.16.0.0/24 to 10.0.0.254 and that's confirmed to be working. Also on WEST, I have the following IPSec config: Local IP: 10.0.0.254 Peer IP: 10.0.0.210 local subnet: 10.0.0.254/32 remote subnet: 10.0.0.210/32 I have the reversed configuration on EAST. What happens when I make a request from machine A to 10.0.0.210:80 is that the SNAT translates the private address of machine A to 10.0.0.254 and it's routed out (and discarded at the other end) without establishing the tunnel. What I'm assuming is happening is that the inside interface on WEST receives a packet from 172.16.0.200 and since this doesn't match the local subnet defined in the tunnel configuration, it's not processed by the IPSec engine and the tunnel is not established. How do you make this work? Seems like a chicken and egg thing with the NAT and IPSec and I just can't wrap my head around how this can be done: can I say, "if a packet is received on the inside interface with a destination of 10.0.0.210, translate it to 10.0.0.254 before the IPSec engine inspects it"?

• Mysql cluster strange behaviour

  Hi Guys, I have 2 mysql clusters on two different servers with management node on each of them. It went down someway. I ran following commands to start the cluster: Start the management node on srv1: srv1: mysqlc/bin/ndb_mgmd --initial -f my_cluster/conf/config.ini --configdir=/home/mysql_cluster/my_cluster/conf Start the management node on srv2: srv2: mysqlc/bin/ndb_mgmd --initial -f my_cluster/conf/config.ini --configdir=/home/mysql_cluster/my_cluster/conf Start the ndbd nodes on srv1: srv1: mysqlc/bin/ndbd --initial -c localhost:1186 Start the ndbd nodes on srv2: srv2: mysqlc/bin/ndbd --initial -c localhost:1186 Start mysqld server on srv1: srv1: mysqlc/bin/mysqld --defaults-file=my_cluster/conf/my.cnf --user=root & and here is the problem. mysql server not loading the data. Only database names are present. All the tables which are ENGINE=ndbcluster are not being loaded. Tables with ENGINE=myisam are being loaded. Backup scripts helped me load the data. But this way I can't use cluster setup. Similar issue appeared when i started srv2. How can I resolve this issue ?

• Can I recover a rm -rf-ed Mercurial repository?

  I made the mistake of wiping out my entire project directory with a quick "rm -rf project". Of course, the .hg directory went with it. I had about 15-20 changesets, that I have not pushed to anyone, and I would really really like to get those back. The system is a Ubuntu machine, and the partiton where the delete happened is ext3, the project consist mostly of PHP files. I know about the guideline to not write to the disk in question. The first idea was to use the tool named scalpel, to get the PHP files back and diff them with the current version from the repo, and somehow carve the changes out. While it succeeded, it did not recover the file names (or there is a switch I'm missing), so I'm left with a few thousand sequentially named .php files, combing through them is not an option. Can a kind soul please save me, and suggest a way to: a) get the repo back, or b) get the files back, with filenames For those wondering how I did such a stupid thing: I was working on a file in Vim which I wanted to remove from the repository: :!hg rm % This complained that the file is in a subrepository, so I specified the following: :!hg rm % -R engine which complained that file has modifications, use -f to force. And this is when somehow, I made up the following command: :!rm -rf % -R engine Somehow, seeing "force" makes me do a rm -rf by reflex.

• Paste textbox from Powerpoint to Word as an editable control

  I have a Powerpoint 2007 file that contains a number of textboxes and shapes with text on them. I can edit, resize, change the text, etc. in these boxes in Powerpoint. However, if I select an item, copy it, and paste it into a Word 2007 document, I can't edit it. I can resize the entire thing, but it acts more like an image than a text box. I've tried the paste special options and keep source formatting options, but still can't edit it. Is there a way to be able to paste the editable content from Powerpoint and still have it editable in Word? Update I found this question that appears to get to the root of the problem: The MS Office Art graphics engine (aka Escher 2) is new to MS Office 2007 and while fully implemented in Excel and Powerpoint is only partially implemented in Word 2007 for backwards compatibility with the MS Office Drawing/Graphics engine (aka Escher) still available in Word It should work in earlier versions of Word and Word 2010, but not Word 2007. This is quite frustrating as I have to edit the slide in Powerpoint before copying it into Word. While doable, it adds another step, but the problem is that everyone who wants to update the Word document will have to do the same thing, adding complexity and steps for everyone. If I embed the Powerpoint slide in the document, I can edit the controls, but they don't scale the same way and takes a lot of work.

• Disable the user of Internet explorer through policies when called from HTML help

  Hello, I have a locked down environment where users are prohibited from doing, well, basically anything but run the specific programs we specify. We just switched a program from using the venerable "WinHELP" help format to HTML help (CHM) but that seem to have an unwanted and rather dangerous side effect: when a user click on a hyperlink inside the HTML help, a new internet explorer window is opened and the user is free to browse and do terrible things to my server (well, not that much, but still...) I have checked the session in this case and the IE window is actually hosted within the help engine: there is no iexplore.exe process running in the user session (and it cannot: it's explicitly prohibited). We have disable all help right now until we find a solution. I'm working with the help team to have all external URLs removed from the help file but that is going to be a long and error-prone task. Meanwhile, I've checked all the group policies option but I have to say that I was unable to find anything that would prevent a standalone IE window hosted in a random process from running. I don't want to disable WinHTTP or the IE rendering engine or anything of the sort. But I need to prevent all users members of a specific AD user group from ever having an IE window displayed to them. The servers are running Windows 2003 and Citrix metaframe 4.5. Thanks in advance

• sendmail on Snow Leopard

  I'm trying to get sendmail working on my MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.4), so that I can send mail with PHP's mail() function. If you know how to do this without sendmail, I'd be interested in that also. The plan is to send mail through smtp.gmail.com using my gmail account, unless you have a better idea. I did this and that didn't work. In /etc/postfix/smtp_sasl_passwords I tried both:     smtp.yourisp.com username:password and     smtp.yourisp.com [email protected]:password The problem seems to be that google doesn't like me. • How to turn off Tomcat logging in Eclipse?

  I develop a Vaadin project in Eclipse that I start through Tomcat 6 which gets started directly by Eclipse. Tomcat prints an enormous amount of log messages though on each start which makes it hard to see the output of my own Application. I have already replaced all log levels in tomcat6/conf/logging.properties by WARNING (e.g. java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler.level = WARNING) but I still get many INFO messages. How can I turn this off or restrict the log messages to WARNING?   This has been discussed, but it has been several months, so it may be time to revisit it: Earlier discussion RE Splunk alternatives For the record, Splunk rocks. But the pricing is simply beyond what we can consider (When I spoke with Splunk today, the cost for a system to index 5gb/day of data is over $30,000.) That is more than we spend on SQL Server (by a large multiple), more than we spend on a rack of servers (by a multiple), etc. etc. The splunk sales team is correct (that for $30K we get more value and functionality than if we spend the same building our own system), but it doesn't matter. The splunk cost is simply too high (by a multiple). Soooooo, we are looking around! Is anyone out there building a splunk like system? Our basic need: Able to listen for syslog messages on multiple udp ports Able to index the incoming data in an async way Some kind of search engine Some kind of UI An API to the search engine (to embed in our console) We currently need to index 3-5gb/day, but need to be able to scale to 10gb/day or more. We do not need a lot of history (30 days is fine). We use Windows 2008 and 2003 servers. Thanks for your thoughts!

• How to access previous VHD versions of system backup?

  Quote from the 31 Oct 2009 TechNet article "Learn more about system image backup": During the first backup, the backup engine scans the source drive and copies only blocks that contain data into a .vhd file stored on the target, creating a compact view of the source drive. The next time a system image is created, only new and changed data is written to the .vhd file, and old data on the same block is moved out of the VHD and into the shadow copy storage area. Volume Shadow Copy Service is used to compute the changed data between backups, as well as to handle the process of moving the old data out to the shadow copy area on the target. This approach makes the backup fast (since only changed blocks are backed up) and efficient (since data is stored in a compact manner). When restoring the image, blocks will be restored to their original locations on the source disk. If you want to restore from an older backup, the engine reads from the shadow copy area and restores the appropriate blocks. For the last days, a daily system backup of drive C: to drive E: has been scheduled and run by Windows 7 Backup and Restore. Drive C: currently holds 233 GB of data, which fits comfortably on drive E:, a 1 TB drive, with 727 GB of free space remaining. How do I access the previous version of a VHD? The database was knocked offline after the attack, and was unable to restart itself after it failed to restart when the attack subsided. • trouble running multiple domains on tomcat behind apache via mod_jk

• Multiple Settings for One Monitor

  I have my monitor set to the way I like it, it shows colors accurately and not overly bright (white doesn't blind me). However I edit photos for the web and this is great for my screen but I have noticed when looking at other screens my photos will at times looked washed out and not a good presentation. If I manually change my monitor settings to be brighter (and a few other tweaks) I can replicate the look of other monitors close enough to help prevent washed out/blown out photos. Here is the issue, I need to be able to change settings between the two fairly easily. To manually set my monitor for one then back to the other can be time consuming and a pain to set right every time. I would like to be able to preset certain settings (in software) that I can quickly switch between by pressing hotkeys or clicking shortcut on my desktop. I have an AMD video card and have attempted to use the AMD VISION Engine Control Center to add presets then tweak the settings for each. However when I switch between the presets the settings are the same. • Installing ionCube on Windows 2008 64bit

  I've been trying to install ionCube onto my server but have not been having a lot of luck! My server is: Windows 2008 64bit PHP 5.3.14 Thread Safe disabled running as FastCGI In my PHP.ini I have : zend_extension="C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\ext\ioncube_loader_win_5.2.dll" The path is correct. The DLL is from the x86 NONTS VC9 version of ionCube and PHP is using the MSVC9 (Visual C++ 2008) compiler though I have also tried using the x86 NONTS VC6 version of ionCube. I'm not getting any error but I'm also not getting ionCube when using phpinfo(): This program makes use of the Zend Scripting Language Engine: Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2012 Zend Technologies Apart from the mail application pools I have also set all the applications in the application pool in IIS7 to use 32bit mode. I don't know if FastCGI is running under 64 or 32 bit mode nor how to switch it or whether it would make a difference? I know it can be a problem installing ionCube onto 64bit Windows but I have also come across threads whereby other people have also [somehow] managed to get it working but even though I seem to be doing the same as them I still can't get it working.

  I'm running a Wordpress Blog that gets medium-high traffic. It is hosted in an Ubuntu Server 2GB Memory 2 Core Processor 40GB SSD Disk, 3TB Transfer. The problem is that MySQL shuts down by itself after an hour or two. I had to restart mysql each and every time this happens.
