• Continual Professional Development - proving new skills to non-technical employers

  Background I work in a non-IT based company, as a professional software developer, building a large scale internal database system. I am fortunate to have a fairly senior position within the company, and have been working here for around 4 years. Often I get asked by management "how do you learn new things?". To be honest, I don't know how to answer this. Over the last 6 months, I've really gotten my teeth into some new techniques and technologies to make my level of coding far better and hopefully improve the quality of the software. Even if it's just refreshing my skills on things I've learnt already. Like last week I dived into some complex XLinq and TPL code (.net). Nothing revolutionary, but I feel like I am a bit better than before. Question The question is, how do I prove this to my employer? It'd be nice to be able to put this on paper. Possibilities I could: Keep a journal of what I've learnt - keeping the technical bits in (nobody would understand or care, but it's better than them being omitted) ???? (I've run out of ideas already) Any ideas? Thanks, Tom

  Hi, I am redirecting my question to superuser from stackoverflow: I have a http streaming link which gives me .flv streaming feed. I want to convert that and access in my iPhone program. How can i do that? I want to have a desktop software like VLC and input this streaming feed URL and convert to iPhone supported and stream again to iPhone. I tried VLC with H.264 and Mpeg-1 audio, but seems to be it doesn't give the supported format, so as iPhone program doesn't play the video. Could someone please guide me how can i setup a desktop software which can stream iPhone supported file? Thanks in advance.

  Attempting to configure some software on our server to send email via SMTP. When testing it, get this SMTP Error: SMTP Error: The following recipients failed [address]" Based on my research and a reply from the software's support team this error usually occurs because relaying is not allowed on the SMTP server from the IP address of the web server. The solution is to "Go to the configuration of your SMTP server and turn relaying on for your IP address" My question is -- how do I do this? Is this done from WHM? cPanel?

• Do you ever worry that you're more concerned with how something is built rather than what you are actually building?

  As a programmer I have an inherent nagging annoyance at my tools, other peoples code, my code, the world in general. I always want to improve it. So I refactor, I stay on top of the latest techniques. I try and learn patterns, I try to use frameworks so as not to reinvent the wheel. I can write a tech spec that will blow your socks off with the amount of patterns I can squeeze in. However, lately I feel I actually know more about the tools I use than how to actually implement successful software. I feel like I'm lacking in the human factors skill set and I believe that to be a successful software engineer takes more than knowing the coolest framework. I think it needs some of the following skillsets too. Interaction design User experience Marketing I've got a bit of this that I've learned from people I've worked with and great projects I've worked on but I don't feel like I "own" these skills. Am I right? Should I be trying to develop these skills further, or should these be left to the people who do these for a career? How do you make sure you don't get too tied up in how you're doing something and make sure you "make your users awesome"? Does anyone know of good resources for learning these skills from a programming point of view?

  The first Bay Area JUG Roundup (#roundup10) convened at Oracle HQ on Wednesday evening, in the palatial surroundings of the Oracle Conference Center. (Yes, there will be more!) A couple hundred people were there, I'd say. More came out of this meetup than a bunch of new contacts and some mild indigestion (or even a mild hangover): - We (meaning, Oracle) announced the opening of the eight annual Duke's Choice Awards. As described on the Web page, "The awards celebrate extreme innovation in the world of Java technology and are granted to the best and most innovative projects using the Java platform." Entries will be accepted through July 1, with winners announced at JavaOne 2010. - Even more exciting, we offered a sneak preview of the Java Road Trip, a cross-country, 20-stop bus tour this Summer involving one rock-star bus, one full-time blogger/videographer, a whole bunch of Java demos and speakers, and lots of beer and prizes. Stay tuned for more info about this. - Sonya Barry, Java.net community manager, announced the beta.java.net project - which will be the end result of the java.net migration to a Kenai back-end and retooled social/community layer (already in progress). Sonya also announced that Maven support for Java.net projects is imminent, with just a contract to be signed in the next couple of weeks. Finally, we were all treated to a typically hilarious Java Posse appearance. Arun Gupta has posted photos as well as meetup slideware at his blog. And as soon as the video replay (thanks, Steve Chin) and Java Posse podcasts are available, I'll post links to those here too.

  I want to join two different home networks together like so: PC A1 PC A2 PC B1 PC B2 \ / \ / Gateway A <----- ethr. cable -----> Gateway B | | ADSL modem A ADSL modem B Both networks are of the basic residential type with identical configuration, with all PCs running Vista/7. The point is to temporarily join two apartments in a building for gaming and file sharing, and the holy grail would be: PCs on network A can access PCs on network B and vice-versa (file shares and gaming). Each network uses its own internet connection. Data between networks shouldn't take a trip through the internet (broadband upload speeds are severely capped) A network's internet access should continue working if the joining cable is disconnected with minimal configuration changes. How closely can this be achieved?

• Using multiple A-records for my domain - do web browsers ever try more than one?

  If I add multiple A-records for my domain, they are returned in a round robin order by DNS-servers. E.g: 1.1.1.1 A example.com 1.1.1.2 A example.com 1.1.1.3 A example.com But how does webbrowsers react if the first host (1.1.1.1) is down (unreachable)? do they try the second host (1.1.1.2) or do they return a error message to the user? Are there any difference between the most popular browsers? If I implement my own application, I can implement so that the second is used in case the first is down, so it's possible. And this would be very helpful to create a fault tolerant website.

  When extending the Windows' shell context menu (e.g. for adding an 'Open command here' prompt on directories), a 'command' key needs to be created in the registry. The value of this 'command' key apparently can be any valid command line. I want to know which 'special variables' are available for use inside this command line. For example, I use following command for opening and cmd window from within a directory's context menu (*): cmd.exe /e:on /f:on /s /k pushd "%V" I cannot find any reference to what %V actually means or what the full list of such variables is.   There’s a good piece written by Ann Grackin of ChainLink Research on the Manufacturing Leadership 100 Awards program held recently in Palm Beach Fl, Apr 30-May 3, 2012.  This article (link below) highlights the summary of the Summit with specific focus on manufacturing innovation.  There were several informative keynotes and sessions from industrial leaders who are leveraging the latest tools and technologies to make better decisions. Ann writes that she was a panelist with Cindy Reese, SVP, Worldwide Operations, Oracle; and Steven Tungate, VP/GM, Supply Chain & Innovation, Toshiba America Business Solutions about Factories and Supply Networks of the Future. Ann writes “So what are these manufacturers doing? Significant rationalization of the supply base (Toshiba, especially, has this issue since they have a long history of many acquisitions), streamlining production to increase productivity, and looking for lower-cost countries for manufacturing….  No doubt firms have global customer bases, so they need to be present in these markets. However, a low-cost-country manufacturing source does introduce more risk in the supply chain. And that was discussed. Quality, security, and intellectual property protection were the critical global manufacturing issues also discussed. “Cindy (Reese) told a fascinating story about Oracle’s acquisition of Sun and the supply chain that was subsequently created. Here was one of the key points: Although Oracle sells on a global basis, they now do their own factory-installed software. • How to "host' an application on one mac and run it on another

  I recently replaced my mac computer and would like to know if it is possible to run software on that computer that actually runs on another computer. My problem is that I use a terminal emulator that speaks SCO-ANSI on my old computer, but it is not compatible with the new version of OS X. I don't want to pay the exorbitant ($200+) licensing fee to get a current version of the software, so I'd like to know if it's possible to run the emulator on the old computer and just "stream" its window somehow to my new Mac computer. Is this possible? Thanks very much!!!

• Connecting to a secure, graphical, x session using a stateless thin client

  I'm looking for an open source, non-proprietery solution to this problem, any help would be appreciated. I'd like to setup a server running Ubuntu Server. I'd then like to connect to this server from a stateless thin client and use an x-session. This would occur mostly over local area networks, but also possibly over the internet. What would be the ideal set of software to accomplish this from a security, and usability standpoint? Are there any ready-made stateless thin clients that don't require proprietery software?

  I'm a Linux guy when it comes to (web) servers for the following reasons Legally free Fast software updates (Unless you're running Cent OS :) Powerful CLI management of services Easy to secure (in terms of users and groups) Web server software is, well, built for Linux... Apache, PHP, Python, etc, are Linux programs that get ported to Windows - I'm 90% sure of this Unless the web server needed to run ASP, I wouldn't use Windows. My boss' IT friend is a Windows guy, though. He recently got a server setup in the office to run Microsoft Exchange and some other shit. What I'm asking is, if he wanted to start running websites on this thing, what would be good reasoning to convince him otherwise? He's not very bright in terms of IT and the IT friend is all Windows. So it's two against one here... What would you say to running a Windows web server?

  I have to buy one backup software to backup a vmware environment with the following server/applications: mixed microsoft windows 2003/2008/2012 server standard environment sql server 2005/2008 mixed linux centos/ubuntu servers postgresql sap environment exchange 2007 linux fileservers windows fileservers active directory random applications/sqlserver/fileserver on workstations xp/7/8 my hardware is: 5 blades on ibm bladecenter, various san, lto4 on 4gbit fiber channel connected to a windows2003 blade where I will install the backup software (backupexec or arcserve). What are your advice and comments over backupexec vray or arcserve choice ? I know that arcserve have a lower price. I used backup exec for some years but I found it pretty complicated. Thank you.

Is there any foss software, that could provide next features? 1. unlimited (at least 5) subtask levels 2. easy way to complete tasks (like in todoist) 3. easy to edit tasks 4. php based (as i want to host it on my server) 5. due dates (including recurring) 6. labels, colors, etc will be good, but not critical PS: i already checked several similar questions, including Which GTD tool/webservice do you recommend?   Few months ago I am looking for a editor to doing simply edit on html,css,javascript.  Before it I tried notepad++ which is quite awesome to do all works I want to get done with him.  I choose 2 editor on my list. first is sublime text and second is phpstorm. both are cross-plateform. I tried both and both is working fine. I finally go with sublime text 2.   Here is the reason why sublime text 2 is awesome. phpstorm and sublime text 2 both is licensed  software. In sublime text 2 you can use it for unlimited time when phpstorm is available for 30 days only. Sublime text 2 is very memory efficient and lightweight software this is first thing people found best in sublime text 2. in phpstorm problem for me is sometime it’s goes unresponsive when I tried html5 boilerplate. sublime text 2 is never hang depend on memory size of project compare to phpstorm. in Sublime text 2 you can got better speed at coding after learning some shortcut and basic thing applied specially sublime text 2. Sublime text 2 come with distraction free mode when phpstorm have nothing with full-screen. Sublime text 2 support almost every language. I have seen many people in community who has move from their PHP IDE to sublime text 2. You can use LESS and coffeescript in it. There are many kind of customization out in github regarding sublime text 2.   In past I also have also tried webmatrix. the latest version of webmatrix have nothing good as sublime text 2. • Which tools should be used for data migration between environments?

  Ø  With the Oracle Utilities Application Framework based products there are a number of tools provided that can be used to transfer data from one environment to another. Ø  There are three main tools that implementations use: §  ConfigLab - A configurable copy facility is metadata aware and therefore understands the relationships between objects and by invoking the relevant maintenance objects validates the data copied. This utility uses the object validation to help ensure data integrity. Basically it is a set of configuration tables and a set of batch jobs to perform the migration of data. §  Bundling - A configurable release management tool that allows exporting of Advanced Configuration Environment based objects (business services, business objects, UI Maps etc) from one environment to another. §  Blueprint - An Oracle Utilities Software Development Kit (SDK) based tool to import metadata from the development environment to your initial testing environment. The utility is command line based and basically uses a text based configuration file to drive the utility on the source and target sides. Ø  Each tool has a role in an implementation but you must be careful to use the right tool for the right job within an implementation. The suggestions are as follows: §  Only use the Blueprint tool for migrating data from your development platform to your initial test environment. The blueprint tool is not designed to move large amounts of data and certainly is risky, if not used correctly, and can potentially break the integrity of your data. §  The SDK provides the configuration data that it is used for (mainly meta-data). This should not be extended as, while it can perform data migration on any data, it is not efficient and risky for certain types of configuration data. • How To Use AutoFill on a Google Docs Spreadsheet [Quick Tips]

  Have you ever wanted to fill an entire row or column with a series of values? If you’re an Excel user, you can do the same thing in Google Docs. If you haven’t used either, here’s the quick way to do it. Just type in a couple of numbers in sequence… 1 2 3 works pretty well. You could also put them across a row instead of down a column. Then move your mouse over the dot in the corner until the pointer changes, then just drag it downward (or if you are filling a row instead, you can drag it to the right). Let go of the mouse, and your data will be automatically filled in. You could also make it skip by 1 instead, like 2 4 6 8, etc… It all works the same way. Sadly there’s no really advanced options like Excel has, but for most uses, this is good enough. Also, we’re aware this is a very simple tip for most of you, but we’re trying to help the beginners out as well! • How to better integrate a unix development environment into Windows

  I'm mostly a Windows user but I do most of my development (essentially web development) using unix tools and software. I've been going back and forth between using a dedicated lubuntu virtual machine on Virtualbox and using some tools directly in windows (msgit, python, django), but none of these approaches is entirely satisfactory. I'd like to hear of ways other devs use to better integrate a unix workflow into windows. For instance tighter integration between a linux and vm and windows. The vagrant demo showed how a VM could work off of a windows project folder and I found that nice. I'd like to hear of other tools and tips that would help mimic the workflow one can find on OS X (of course I understand that it cannot be as tightly integrated on Windows as it doesn't have the same unix underpinnings). PS: I have tried cygwin as well EDIT for clarifications about What I find lacking (thanks to axblount for pointing that out) : unix tools like msys et al do not work as well as their native unic counterparts. Many scripts, installers require further configuration or do not work at all. For instance getting virtualenvwrapper to work is not very straightforward. virtualbox: ideally I would like to use windows software (photoshop, sublime text 2) seamlessly with linux. I mostly use a FTP client atm to move over files edited on the windows side which is a tedious process.
