  • Using fixtures with factory_girl

    When building the following factory: Factory.define :user do |f| f.sequence(:name) { |n| "foo#{n}" } f.resume_type_id { ResumeType.first.id } end ResumeType.first returns nil and I get an error. ResumeType records are loaded via fixtures. I checked using the console and the entries are there, the table is not empty. I've found a similar example in the factory_girl mailing list, and it's supposed to work. What am I missing? Do I have to somehow tell factory_girl to set up the fixtures before running the tests?

  • Permutation on Rails Routes

    I currently have an application that for a set of parameters (location, category, budget, ...) a user can enter a "pretty" URL like: /location/canada/ontario /category/primary /budget/small Resulting in the respective parameters: params[:country] == 'canada' and params[:region] == 'ontario' params[:category] == 'primary' params[:budget] == 'small' I want to allow users to perform searches on multiple parameters at once (with each parameter optional). For example: /location/canada/ontario/category/primary/budget/small I understand that this can be achieved using URL parameters, but for SEO reasons I prefer to add the "pretty" parameters. Is this at all possible without listing all possible combination of routes (I have a large number of search-able fields)? I understand that route "globbing" maybe play a roll, but I am not sure how.   • How to secure images with Rails?

    I have a gallery in my rails app that needs to only allow certain images to be shown to specific, logged in users. I am using Paperclip for image processing now, but it saves all images in a public folder available to anyone. Note that I don't have to use Paperclip if there is a better way, and I already have the login system in place. I just need a way to place the images in a non-public location, but still be able to serve them as needed. Is it possible to only allow these images to be served to authenticated users?

  • Rails precision error

    When I run this in my Rails application: my_envelope.transactions.sum(:amount) This SQL is shown in the log files: SQL (0.3ms) SELECT SUM("transactions"."amount") AS sum_id FROM "transactions" WHERE (envelope_id = 834498537) And this value is returned: <BigDecimal:1011be570,'0.2515999999 9999997E2',27(27)> As you can see, the value is 25.159999. It should be 25.16. When I run the same SQL on the database myself, the correct value is returned. I'm a little confused because I know that there are precision problems with Floats, but it is returning a BigDecimal. The SQL column type is decimal. Any ideas?

I know I can duplicate my code to make it work but how to dynamically create the services? Thanks!

    I want to add additional criteria to the LEFT OUTER JOIN generated by the :include option in ActiveRecord finder. class Post has_many :comments end class Comment belongs_to :post has_many :comment_votes end class CommentVote belongs_to :comment end Now lets say I want to find last 10 posts with their associated comments and the up comment votes. Post.find.all(:limit => 10, :order => "created_at DESC", :include => [{:comments => :comment_votes]) I cant add the condition to check for up votes as it will ignore the posts without the up votes. So the condition has to go the ON clause of the JOIN generated for the comment_votes. I am wishing for a syntax such as: Post.find.all(:limit => 10, :order => "created_at DESC", :include => [{:comments => [:comment_votes, :on => "comment_votes.vote > 0"]) Have you faced such problems before? Did you managed to solve the problem using the current finder? I hope to hear some interesting ideas from the community. PS: I can write a join SQL to get the expected result and stitch the results together. I want to make sure there is no other alternative before going down that path.

    I'm learning Rails, and the target of my experiments is to realize something similar to Zoho Creator, Flexlist or Mytaskhelper, i.e. an app where the user can create his own database schema and views. What's the best strategy to pursue this? I saw something about the Entity-Attribute-Value but I'm not sure whether it's the best strategy or if there is some support in Rails for it. If there was any tutorial in Rails about a similar project it would be great. Probably it's not the easiest star for learning a new language and framework, but it would be something I really plan to do since a long time.

The matches include, for example, private notes that each party makes about the other and some options they can set regarding the other. I have two sets of views centered around Companies and Customers for each party to look at the other and modify their notes and settings. # Customers Controller def show @customer = Customer.find(params[:customer]) @matchings = @candidate.matchings.find... @company = Company.find(params[:company]) end Obviously the @matchings is incomplete.     I have an ajax-enabled site that presents a lot of dynamic content by interpolating JSON values with HTML. This all works fine. BUT it means I have significant amounts of HTML all through my JavaScript. For example: var template = "<div>Foo: {bar}</div><div>Blah: {vtha}</div>"; template.interpolate({bar:"bar",blah:"vtha"}); I have cut this down a fair bit - some of my dynamic elements have quite a lot of HTML and a lot going on. I am using jQuery and I am building on Rails, so if there is something smart in either framework, that would be great.   • Can a rake task know about the other tasks in the invocation chain?

    Rake (like make) is able to have many targets/tasks specified on invocation. Is it possible for a rake task to access the list of tasks the user invoked, in order to do its job? Scenario: Consider a Rake-based build tool. A help task would like to know what tasks were also specified in order to print their usage and halt the build process. The benefit of this as opposed to rake-style parameter passing are cleaner syntax (rake help build instead of rake help task=build) and chaining (rake help build run_tests would print usage for both).

  • How to test routes that don't include controller?

    I'm using minitest in Rails to do testing, but I'm running into a problem that I hope a more seasoned tester can help me out with because I've tried looking everywhere for the answer, but it doesn't seem that anyone has run into this problem or if they have, they opted for an integration test. Let's say I have a controller called Foo and action in it called bar. So the foo_controller.rb file looks like this: class FooController < ApplicationController def bar render 'bar', :layout => 'application' end end The thing is that I don't want people to access the "foo/bar" route directly. So I have a route that is get 'baz' => 'foo#bar'. Now I want to test the FooController: require 'minitest_helper' class FooControllerTest < ActionController::TestCase def test_should_get_index get '/baz' end end But the test results in an error that No route matches {:controller=>"foo", :action=>"/baz"}. How do I specify the controller for the GET request? Sorry if this is a dumb question. It's been very hard for me to find the answer.
