• Where to store users visited pages?

  Hi there. I have a project, where I have posts for example. The task is next: I must show to user his last posts visit. This is my solution: every time user visits new (for him) topic, I create a new record in table visits. Table visits has next structure: id, user_id, post_id, last_visit. Now my tables visits has ~14,000,000 records and its still growing every day.. May be my solution isnt optimal and exists another way how to store users visits? Its important to save every visit as standalone record, because I also have feature to select and use users visits. And I cant purge this table, because data could be needed later month, year. How I could optimize this situation?

  Hi I heard about doing staging tables and I am wondering how you actually do it. I want to do a sqlbulk copy into a staging table. Then then update the real table. I heard in mssql 2008 that you can use something called merge but I am using ms sql 2005 so I heard I have to use a update inner join? I am not sure how that would look like(I am guessing best way would be to write it in SP). Also the staging table needs to be able to handle concurrent updates. I was thinking of putting another column in the staged as GUID so that way I know which records belong to which group and when it is time to delete the records from the staged table I can just use that. So can anyone show me any examples or tutorials on how to do it? Also how fast is this way? Say if your updating 50,000 records how long would that take(a guesstimate is fine)

Is there anyway to get around this? How about this. I've an object that contains only integers, which is fine for all the internal functionings as it allows me to link tables. But occasionaly, I need to display some information to the user. That's why, I'd like to create a static method so it would read the integer, look up in the DB, and display a name instead of a number. I want it to be a static method so that I can use it in my View template. Thanks for helping

  I'm building a MySQL query but I can't seem to get it right. I have four tables: - customers - orders - sales_rates - purchase_rates There is a 1:n relation 'customernr' between customers and orders. There is a 1:n relation 'ordernr' between orders and sales_rates. There is a 1:n relation 'ordernr' between orders and purchase_rates. What I would like to do is produce an output of all customers with their total purchase and sales amounts. So far I have the following query. SELECT c.customernr, c.customer_name, SUM(sr.sales_price) AS sales_price, SUM(pr.purchase_price) AS purchase_price FROM orders o, customers c, sales_rates sr, purchase_rates pr WHERE o.customernr = c.customernr AND o.ordernr = sr.ordernr AND o.ordernr = pr.ordernr GROUP BY k.bedrijfsnaam The result of the sales_price and purchase_price is far too high. Let's say I have the following table with the following columns: ID (primary key), value1, value2, value3, value4, value5 When I need to update something I call UPDATE ... WHERE ID=@id LINQ to SQL call UPDATE ... WHERE ID=@id and value1=@value1 and value2=@value2 and value3=@value3 and value4=@value4 and value5=@value5 I can override this behavior by adding UpdateCheck=UpdateCheck.Never to every column, but with every update of the DataContext class with the GUI, this will be erased. Is there any way to tell LINQ to use this way of updating data?

• What server setup for a small web development company? [closed]

  I co-own a company with a friend of mine and we have decided to buy a new server to support our business (our current server is an Asus EEE Box, working great but too limited :) ). I should mention that we are web developers but occasionally we do small-office sys admin. Thus, 99% of time we work on GNU/Linux (mainly Ubuntu) but from time to time we need to setup a Windows environment to assist some customers (e.g. setup a temporary SQL Server 2008). Our requirements: Low budget: we don't want the cheapest solution out there but we can't afford to spend too much. Budget could be ~1000-1500€ (before VAT) Robustness: we would like to setup a RAID array and maybe have an external disk where we can store backups Virtualization: we need to be able to setup few servers for development. The scenario is something like this (~8 appliances running in parallel): Redmine + GIT server Bacula server FTP server 3-4 virtual appliances that could be set up on demand to test our applications or support a customer. The appliances could be: LAMP, Tomcat+PostgreSQL, SQL Server Support: if something breaks down it shouldn't be too difficult to find a replacement. Now, given the main requirements, there are some doubts we need to clarify: Do you suggest to buy a prepackaged solution (for example a customized Dell PowerEdge T110 or T310) or to assemble the server by ourselves (buy the separate components)? What RAID configuration do you suggest? I was thinking of RAID1 (probably cheaper) or RAID5. should we buy a hardware RAID controller or is it ok to use a software RAID (mdadm)? In case, which controller do you suggest? What processor do you suggest (Intel Xeon, i3, i5, i7, AMD)? How much RAM? (I was thinking at least 8GB, ~1GB per appliance) What virtualization software do you recommend? VMWare seems to be the best choice, but what about XEN or KVM? We don't want to buy licenses at the moment so we would like to consider only free options. What OS do you recommend? We know Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo very well (we would like to use Ubuntu Server), however it seems a lot of people goes for CentOS. Thanks in advance if you can help us with this! Right now all of my tables are joined into my users table foreign keyed into the "userId" field How do i integrate asp.net_users table into my schema? here are the ideas i thought of: Add a membership_id field to my users table and on new inserts, include that new field in my users table. This seems like the cleanest way as i dont need to break any existing relationships. break all existing relationship and move all of the fields in my user table into the asp.net_users table. This seems like a pain but ultimately will lead to the most simple, normalized solution any thoughts?

  My task is to search for a string or a pattern in a list of documents that are very short (say 200 characters long). However, say there are 1 million documents of such time. What is the most efficient way to perform this search?. I was thinking of tokenizing each document and putting the words in hashtable with words as key and document number as value, there by creating a bag of words. Then perform the word search and retrieve the list of documents that contained this word. From what I can see is this operation will take O(n) operations. Is there any other way? may be without using hash-tables?. Also, is there a python library or third party package that can perform efficient searches?

Basic math: 949324-937796=11528. Numeric values are stored as number datatypes. What am I missing here?

• Extendable accessing of sqlite database on android platform

  Hi, I am fairly new to the android sdk and databases and have been searching for an answer to this quite some time. I am trying to build an app which has multiple tables within a database. e.g. one for weapons, armours etc. However, my DatabaseManager class which handles all of my table creating, DatabaseHelper inner class and populating of data is creating for an extremely large class requiring high maintenance. Every time I would like to add or remove a table column I need to change quite a few areas of code, - Every reference to the addition of a row in that table with data - The method that the above calls - The method returning all of the database rows - The code in the helper class creating the table - Any specific update methods My question is this: Surely there must be some better way of coding this system, maybe using a database isn't the best way to go, or am i just not used to such large classes having only learned java at university and my largest class consisting of a mere 400-600 lines of code. • My table cells don't highlight immediately when touched

  Hi, In my app, I have a table view that has about eight cells. There is a navigation bar at the top. When a user touches a cell, nothing happens for about 1/2 second. Then the touched cell highlights blue and immediately the new view slides into position. The problem is that there is no feedback to the user about which cell he touched until just before the new view slides into position. For example, when I explore the tables in the iPhone's Settings application, when you touch a cell, the cell immediately turns blue, and then there is a 1/2 second delay, and then you see the new view. How do I get my table's feedback of highlighting the cells to happen immediately? I am using tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:, and each cell has an accessory button. Thanks for any insight.

  I need to implement change tracking on two tables in my SQL Server 2005 database. I need to audit additions, deletions, updates (with detail on what was updated). I was planning on using a trigger to do this, but after poking around on Google I found that it was incredibly easy to do this incorrectly, and I wanted to avoid that on the get-go. Can anybody post an example of an update trigger that accomplishes this successfully and in an elegant manner? I am hoping to end up with an audit table with the following structure: ID LogDate TableName TransactionType (update/insert/delete) RecordID FieldName OldValue NewValue ... but I am open for suggestions.   We have have a table layout with property names in one table, and values in a second table, and items in a third. (Yes, we're re-implementing tables in SQL.) We join all three to get a value of a property for a specific item. Unfortunately the values can have multiple data types double, varchar, bit, etc. Currently the consensus is to stringly type all the values and store the type name in the column next to the value. tblValues DataTypeName nvarchar Is there a better, cleaner way to do this?

  I'm aware that sysadmin is documented as the server role necessary for creating logins (SQL/Windows-integrated); nevertheless, I'm tasked to find out if there's any other server role (built-in or otherwise) that can be used. To be specific, I'm looking to setup one or two logins with access to create logins, create [database] users, assign users to [database] roles. Potentially reset passwords, but most of the logins are Windows-integrated and it's not necessary. Cannot have access to data at all, nor can these logins have rights to update tables nor create/update roles. Seems my only options so far are to set these 2 logins with securityadmin server role and for the specific databases, configure with db_securityadmin and db_accessadmin... but this configuration doesn't allow for creating logins.
