Sometimes I notice Desktop.ini files in folders of my computer. Why/how are they generated, and, is it possible to make the OS stop generating these files?

I have 2 printers.
HP Deskjet F2235 - designated scanner (has printing issues)
Brother HL-2040 - designated printer (doesn't have a scanner)
Just by using those two both connected to the same computer, is there a way to perform a photocopy operation by scanning via the designated scanner then immediately it being printed from the designated printer?
Obviously you could save the scanned files then print them, but short of making a script or manually doing this, is there a faster automatic way through settings or third-party software?
Hi all,
I just bought a used custom-built computer locally. In the process of checking the hardware, I notice that the case fans have accumulated a lot of green "gunk" and I've tried wetting the edge of a paper towel to wipe and rub it off. Still, there is always some residue remaining. What's the best way to clean off this gunk?
Thanks in advance. No pictures, but I can take some if needed.
I have a charged laptop battery in a laptop that is running on AC power and charging the battery. Would it damage the battery if I remove it while the computer is running?
From wikipedia : 2
In computer security, a DMZ (sometimes referred to as a perimeter
networking) is a physical or logical subnetwork that contains and
exposes an organization's external services to a larger untrusted
network, usually the Internet.
Why it says
larger untrusted network, usually the Internet.
I see it many places that internet is said to be untrusted network. Are there any reason for it?
My wired USB mouse's left button stops working properly after being plugged into the computer for about five minutes. The mouse button will become sticky and not allow me to select things or the left button is completely unresponsive. The mouse driver is up to date.
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium with the Service Pack 2 on a Sony Viao laptop (Model number (VGN-NW125J).
If anybody knows how to fix this your help would be greatly appreciated.
My question is mainly about getting the phone connected to Vista computer.
Once it's connected I want to share the internet connection with PdaNet.
Does anyone know how to tether with Vista using bluetooth?
I want to use a vpn connection on my Debian server but I get disconnected from ssh if I connect to the vpn. I thought by using the "ip route add" I can prevent getting disconnected from my server and it will continue to use the main connection for communication between my computer and the server, and the vpn for communication with other ips.
This is the command I use
ip route add PUBLICHOMEIP via PUBLICSERVERIP
But I get disconnected after the "ip route add" command too. Am I making a mistake anywhere?
I have Windows Vista on my computer, and it says it has a very good connection to my wireless router, but it doesn't display any webpages in Firefox or IE. It just says "Can't find this page".
Any ideas?
Hey,
I´m running openSolaris LiveCD on a computer that runs Windows XP.
How can I mount the 2 partitions I have in Windows, and be able to access them from the Solaris?
Thanks
I need to change the socket phpPgAdmin connects to in its config.
// Hostname or IP address for server. Use '' for UNIX domain socket.
// use 'localhost' for TCP/IP connection on this computer
$conf['servers'][0]['host'] = '/opt/jasperreports-server-cp-5.1.0/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432';
this does not work (even without the last part .s.PGSQL.5432). The path is correct, because I can connect through:
:~# psql --host=/opt/jasperreports-server-cp-5.1.0/postgresql/
What is the reason partitioning is usually a step in installing multiple (2) operating systems on the same computer?
Does an operating system have to have it's own partition to run or can it run in the same partition as another operating system? (i.e. -can two of the same flavor run in the same partition but if you have one Linux and one windows it needs to be partitioned?)
Is it necessary to make disk partitions to run multiple operating systems?
im trying to image a new HP netbook via the windows 7 BACK UP util. however, it doesnt detect the external drive, although it's seen in my computer and BIOS.

After my old computer died I wanted to download my music collection from Google Music - which is very easy with Googles Music Manager. After a few hours it had downloaded my library, but also showed around 300 download errors. Downloading the library another time, however, made different files fail (Which tells me that the error isn't connected to the files as such).
Does anybody know of a way how to retry only the songs that failed downloading?
I want to install Windows XP on My desktop computer (only XP) but my cd drive has gone bust.
I have tried to search for installation tutorials but I found only those in which people tell me how to install it ON the pen drive rather than FROM the pendrive.
Please help out! Thanks in Advance
I'm logging through Remote Desktop to windows 7. Some other users sometimes try to connect to the same computer, then a message box pops up with information that I have 30 seconds to block this try or I will be logged off. Sometimes I'm away and then I'm being logged off and when I come back I have to log on again.
Is there a way to turn off this functionality for single user. Is there some application that always breaks this login process ?
Is it possible to safe all changes a user does in his home directory?
The idea is to be able to recover a home directory if a file is deleted or overwritten. My problem is having an old family member (80+ years) who wants to learn how to use a computer. For me it would be easier to recover the home directory from any abuse or mistakes that the user might do.
Is there an easy solution, which is quite failsafe?
We have a number of shared computers that users never seem to log out of. Am I correct that there is no built in functionality to automatically log off console sessions after an idle timeout? I've seen two suggestions: a logoff screensaver, and a scheduled task with an idle trigger. Will the idle trigger work if only the session is idle, but the computer is in use with a different session? Is there a better way to go about this? Thanks,
I'd like to read small text file, located at: /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch without root permissions. It contains information about graphic cards (dedicated ATI Radeon and integrated Intel HD3000).
I wrote a simple script displaying infomation I need, but it works only with root privileges. I already tried changing file & folder permissions, but when I restart my computer, the problem remains. Is it possible to permanently change that file permissions or owner?
I'd Like to set up two different websites on one IP address using two different servers. Right now we are using Apache for our one Mac Server and it forwards correctly both to the pyhsical IP address as well as the domain. We'd like to add another domain to a new computer also running Leopard + Apache

I'm trying to connect a Seven pc with a XP pc. The workgroup name is the same, but I do not see nothing inside Network item in Computer window.
I have turned off firewall on both pcs.
Now the XP pc pings the other, but the Seven pc does not ping the other.
What could be the cause?
I have 12 hours to backup 2 TB of data.
I would like to backup to a network share to a computer using consumer WD 2TB Black 7200rpm hard drives. Gigabit Ethernet.
What other variables would I need to consider to see if this is feasible? How would I set up this calculation?
