• Default shell for running scripts (w/o shebang) in macos?

  I have ZSH as default shell in MacOS, everything is working fine. ZSH is installed as brew package, Ive set default shell in my account, new shell is listed in /etc/shells... everything is set, like I've said. I have some shell scripts in which I use some commands from zsh, like print. When I execute the script from command line, the print command is not recognized and the script fails. This script does not have the shebang line. When I put the shebang line for zsh, then everything works; the print command is working. Since I am using only ZSH, is it possible to set default shell for running scripts, so I don't have to put shebang line in my .zsh scripts? Or is it possible to associate .zsh extension to ZSH shell execution?

• PostgreSQL automatic backup

  I have been trying to set up a backup script on a windows server. I have used pgAgent (scheduling for pgAdmin), to run the backup script. No problems with the backup script. However, my jobs are not running like they should. I have set both the schedule, and the steps. I am fairly certain, that I am running the service under a wrong user or a user without the required permissions. I run the service like this: "C:\Program Files\pgAdmin III\pgAgent" INSTALL pgAgent -u postgres -p secret hostaddr=127.0.0.1 dbname=pgadmin user=postgres And I get an error, telling me that there was an error with the login information, though I know it's correct. When I go under services (controlpanel -- administration -- services), I am able to start the service with the local user. Can this be the problem? Where can I see or change the permissions on the postgres user?

• How can I make Amazon SES the default method of sending mail from my server?

  I'd like to start using Amazon SES for all emails from our server. We have a few freelance designers with PHP hosting, some Django/Python web apps and also some system utilities which send emails. So I'd like to have PHP's mail function, the command line mail command and our python apps all be able to use it, preferably without having to set them all up in their own way. I think what I need is to have something like Postfix running on localhost and using SES for it's delivery but I don't know how to do that. Amazon's docs state I need to setup my mail transfer agent (MTA) so that it invokes the ses-send-email.pl script. I have the script but I'm not sure how to achieve this. Am I on the right track? If so, how can I configure Postfix to use that script?

• Postfix/Procmail mailing list software

  I'm looking for suggestions on mailing list software to use on an existing server running Postfix/Procmail. Something relatively simple. requirements: 1 list, < 50 subscribers list members dumped in a certain file by a script (being pulled from LDAP or MySQL on another box) Handles MIME, images, etc. Moderation features No subscription/unsubscription - just goes by the file or database. Mailman is far too heavy-weight, and doesn't seem to play (easily) with Postfix/Procmail. I'm currently using a PHP script that just receives mail as a user, reads a list of members from a serialized array (file dumped on box via cron on the machine with the MySQL database containing members) and re-mails it to everyone. Unfortunately, we now need moderation capabilities, and I don't quite feel like adding that to the PHP script if there's already something out there that does it. Thanks for any tips. -Jason

• mod_wsgi on Plesk server

  I've installed mod_wsgi on my Plesk server, but I can't get it to behave the way I'd like. If I add WSGIScriptAlias /python /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/python/test.wsgi To my config file, going to http://domain.com/python/blah triggers my test.wsgi script. However, going to any domain on my server and adding /python triggers my script as well. How can I limit it to one specific domain without breaking anything in Plesk? • Soft 404 error on redirected outbound links

  I have a redirect script on my site which sends visitors to an affiliate site. However in the last month I've noticed that Google webmaster tools is reporting my outbound links as a 404 error. Here is the breakdown on how its setup: My outbound links are coded like this: <a href="/f/c123" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Link Title</a> My redirect script will then perform a 302 redirect to the affiliate link Originally I had the affiliate links (CJ) directly in the HTML, however I noticed over time that this had some impact on my sites traffic. So I changed them to a redirect script and my traffic returned. This seemed to work with no issues for over 1 year but now I'm getting soft 404 errors in Google webmaster tools. I did try adding a rule in my robots.txt to block any links starting with /f/ but I'm not sure if this will help or Google will still report soft 404 errors. I am considering as possible options to change the a tag to a button tag and use an onclick event to load the link.

• using flock in bash, why does killing a child process kill the parent process too?

  In the code snippet below, I want the script to be limited to only running one copy at a time, and for it to restart server.x if it dies for any reason. Without flock involved, the loop correctly restarts if I kill the server process, but once I use flock to ensure the script is only running once, if I kill server.x it also kills the parent process. • Apache + mod_php Ignores SUID?

  Does apache or mod_php cause a SUID flag to be ignored when using the shell_exec command from a web accessed PHP script? I'm trying to allow a web accessible PHP script to rename some files which the apache user does not have write access to. I don't want to give it access to write these, as I only want one controlled script to be able to do this. I'm trying to avoid SUDO and the config needed or the headache/insecurity of using a que called from a privileged users cron, and it seemed like I should be able to use SUID to accomplish this. • Why does XFBML work everywhere but in Chrome?

This PDF indicates that it is possible to connect up to four external monitors to the laptop. The information is Windows only. • How to trigger cross-platform jobs between Windows and Unix

  I have an application which has components on Windows and Unix. I need to run overnight jobs which initiate tasks/jobs on both environment. These need to be sequenced so I cannot simple use Cron / Task Scheduler. For each job, there will be a controlling script either on Windows or Unix, but this script will need to initiate jobs on the other environment and detect when they are complete and a success/failure code. In the past I have achieved this using 'flag files' on a samba share. This worked but required 'polling' behaviour on the receiving end which I do not consider optimal. I would prefer not to have to embed user credentials in script if possible.

  I just bought an external monitor for my laptop (Asus VH242H) but cannot set its resolution to anything higher than 1600x900. I tried both from System/Administration/Monitors and the ATI Catalyst Control Center. There was a CD that came with the monitor but it only contains a Windows installer. According to the monitor's specifications: 23.6” 16:9 widescreen with 1920×1080 resolution enables borderless Full HD 1080p full-screen video display. My graphic card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 and the monitor is currently connected to my laptop with a VGA cable. How can I set my external monitor to its maximum resolution?

• Licensing a JavaScript library

  I am developing a free, open-source (duh) JavaScript library, and wondering how to license it. I was considering the GNU GPL, but I heard that I must distribute the license with the software, and I'm not sure anymore. I would like the library to be available much like jQuery: In a free, downloadable script, preferably in either original or minified form. Am I mistaken about the GNU GPL license terms? jQuery is dual licensed under GNU GPL or MIT licenses. How does the GPL apply to single script files like that? Can I license my library with nothing more than a few sentences in the script file? Is there another license that better suits my needs? What would be nice is a license that allows you to put the URL in the source, for people to read if they want. I don't know that many do, unless I am mistaken. I am generally looking to release the library as free software like the GPL specifies, but don't want to have to force licensees to download the full license unless they wish to read it.

• How to start a task before networking?

  I've written an upstart task that modifies /etc/network/interfaces. (Actually a file sourced into it.) Which start on condition do I need to declare to let my task run before any networking jobs? I've tried start on starting networking, but that's apparently too late. When I log in after booting I can see that the changes were written, but obviously they are not used: the new config states a static IP, but the boot process waits for a non-existing DHCP server (old config) to time out. I've also tried start on starting network-interface INTERFACE=eth0, which didn't work either. IIRC there was an error in the log that the change couldn't be written. Background: I need a VM template that can be cloned and the clones configured through a script. Among other settings, I need to give them a static IP address to access them from the host. I use guestfish to write a config file to one of the virtual disks and let a script apply these settings to the system. I don't want that disk to contain an actual system settings file. I can't modify /etc directly, because that disk is shared (copy-on-write/diff) among the clones and guestfish apparently doesn't support that type of image. I could also let them use DHCP and setup a server that assigns IP by MAC, but I'm afraid of the complexity. I could also add just another virtual disk for configuration files, but if possible I'd prefer to store settings directly on the system disk image. Used software: Ubuntu Server 12.04, VirtualBox. The configuration modifier is a self written ruby script.

• GIMP Slow Startup

  Is there any way to speed up GIMP's startup time on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit 1.6 [Dual] Intel Processors? On XP [different computer], it loads in less than 3 seconds. On Vista, it takes 20 seconds: 2 Seconds (other - fonts, brushes, etc) 18 Seconds (extension-script-fu) It just freezes at extension-script-fu. Looking at ProcessExplorer (or Task Manager, whatever), I see that it's not taking any CPU. EDIT: it does seem to be taking 50% of the CPU. It gets stuck for about 18 seconds, then starts working again, and the actual GIMP program pops up [...finally]. I have the latest stable version running (I think). I tried it with XP SP2 Compatibiliy mode and/or Run As Administrator, but that didn't help. EDIT: One way would be to disable script-fu. Does anyone know how to disable it at startup? (NOTE: Just wanted to point out that the title and the tags are the same. :D )

  This blog post is written in response to the T-SQL Tuesday hosted by Jes Schultz Borland. Earlier today, I was presenting a 45-minute session at the Community College about “The Beginning SQL Server Database”. One of the students asked me the following question. What is the difference between COUNT(DISTINCT) vs COUNT(ALL)? I found this question from the student very interesting. He seems to have read the documentation (Book Online) and was then asking me this question. I always carry laptop which has SQL Server installed. I quickly opened it and ran the following script. After looking at the result, I think it was clear to everybody. Here is the script: SELECT COUNT([Title]) Value FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO SELECT COUNT(ALL [Title]) ALLValue FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT [Title]) DistinctValue FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO The above script will give me the following results. You can clearly notice from the result set that COUNT (ALL ColumnName) is the same as COUNT(ColumnName). The reality is that the “ALL” is actually  the default option and it needs not to be specified. The ALL keyword includes all the non-NULL values. I know this is very simple and may be it does not change how we work; however looking at the whole angle, I really enjoyed the question. • Check_webinject plugin will not connect to https site using

  We're using Nagios to monitor some of our web sites. We have a script that uses the older plugin that we are trying to switch to using webinject.pl from cpan. When the script runs, it generates this error: LWP::Protocol::https::Socket: SSL connect attempt failed with unknown error error:1407741A:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:tlsv1 alert decode error at /usr/local/share/perl5/LWP/Protocol/http.pm line 51. It appears the web site does not support TLSv1 for https. If it matters, the site is a Cisco WebVPN. I've pointed the same script at a different site that does support TLSv1 and it seems to work fine. My web search is coming up empty.   In ASP.NET you can tackle the internationalization requirement by taking advantage of native support to local and global resources used with the ResourceExpressionBuilder. But with this approach you cannot access public resources defined in external assemblies referenced by your Web application. However, since you can extend the .NET resource provider mechanism and create new expression builders you can workaround this limitation and use external resources in your ASPX pages much like you use local or global resources. Finally, if you are thinking, okay this is all very nice but where’s the code I can use?
