  • Renaming a file in Java without using renameTo()

    Disregarding my last post, I've found the source of the problem. I'm using a.renameTo(b) when b doesn't exist. The reason it doesn't exist is because there is a symbolic link so if b is "/usr/name/folder/file", then b really is "/mnt/MountTest" because the symlink is to that directory. So the question is, is there an alternative way to rename a file in Java using a string value? If not, how can this rename procedure be done differently?

  • Realtime MySQL search results on an advanced search page

    I'm a hobbyist, and started learning PHP last September solely to build a hobby website that I had always wished and dreamed another more competent person might make. I enjoy programming, but I have little free time and enjoy a wide range of other interests and activities. I feel learning PHP alone can probably allow me to create 98% of the desired features for my site, but that last 2% is awfully appealing: The most powerful tool of the site is an advanced search page that picks through a 1000+ record game scenario database. Users can data-mine to tremendous depths - this advanced page has upwards of 50 different potential variables. It's designed to allow the hardcore user to search on almost any possible combination of data in our database and it works well. Those who aren't interested in wading through the sea of options may use the Basic Search, which is comprised of the most popular parts of the Advanced search. Because the advanced search is so comprehensive, and because the database is rather small (less than 1,200 potential hits maximum), with each variable you choose to include the likelihood of getting any qualifying results at all drops dramatically. In my fantasy land where I can wield AJAX as if it were Excalibur, my users would have a realtime Total Results counter in the corner of their screen as they used this page, which would automatically update its query structure and report how many results will be displayed with the addition of each variable. In this way it would be effortless to know just how many variables are enough, and when you've gone and added one that zeroes out the results set. A somewhat similar implementation, at least visually, would be the Subtotal sidebar when building a new custom computer on IBuyPower.com For those of you actually still reading this, my question is really rather simple: Given the time & ability constraints outlined above, would I be able to learn just enough AJAX (or whatever) needed to pull this one feature off without too much trouble? would I be able to more or less drop-in a pre-written code snippet and tweak to fit? or should I consider opening my code up to a trusted & capable individual in the future for this implementation?   • exclude private property from print_r or object?

    Basically I am using Code Igniter, and the Code Igniter base class is huge, when I print_r some of my objects they have the base class embedded inside them. this makes it a pain to get the information I actually wanted (the rest of the properties). So, I am wondering if there is a way I can hide, or remove the base class object?     I'm in need for a data structure that can handle small sets (10-20 strings, at most 50, of varying length) very fast. False positives is ok, but false negatives are not. The last requirement makes bloom filters seem like a good fit, but I'm not sure about their speed, any other recommendations?

  • Read part of a file in PHP

    I would like to read the last 1 megabyte of a MP3 file and calculate SHA1 checksum for just that part of the file. The reason that I would want this is that when I'm looking for duplicate MP3's, the header info (song title, album etc.) can differ even though it's the exakt same audio file, so I figured I would be better of to checksum a part of the file at the end instead of the whole one. Is there an efficient way of doing this?

  • Very simple test view in MonoTouch draws a line using Core Graphics but view content is not shown

    Hi, I give up now on this very simple test I've been trying to run. I want to add a subview to my window which does nothing but draw a line from one corner of the iPhone's screen to the other and then, using touchesMoved() it is supposed to draw a line from the last to the current point. The issues: 1. Already the initial line is not visible. 2. When using Interface Builder, the initial line is visible, but drawRect() is never called, even if I call SetNeedsDisplay(). It can't be that hard...can somebody fix the code below to make it work? Is this is how it works? 2- Also if it is created locally in a function, when the function returns will the memory occupied by the string be freed? 3- Last but not least, why is this not allowed: ptr[0] = 'H'; ?

    Two questions. First question is I'm trying to create a simple form that when you press a button, it adds a Person object to the ArrayList. However, since I am not used to GUIs, I tried creating one and am first just trying to get the user input from the JTextField, create an ActionListener object of the appropriate type, so once that works, then I can pass in all the JTextField inputs to create my Person object.
