• When upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 on a DELL laptop, how do I know which drivers to reinstall an

  According to Dell's upgrade page for Vista to Windows 7, after using the upgrade assistant the final step is to install drivers. They refer to this page for the order of driver installation, listing 9 items. From there I go to the Dell Drivers and Downloads page, enter my system tag, and get a list of the downloads available for my specific box. That page, by the way, has a link to driver install instructions that lists 10 rather than 9 items. Going to Drivers Help in the side panel and clicking on "In what order should drivers be installed?" shows yet a third list, this one containing 13 items. Not surprisingly, the order of these 3 lists of drivers are not quite the same for the common items! Furthermore, of the 26 files Dell's site recommends for my machine, there are several not shown on any of the 3 lists! I can make determinations for some of these: 6 of them are "applications" so I know which of those I want and that they could probably be safely installed after all drivers. BIOS: I would think this should be unaffected by an OS upgrade so could be skipped. Two tools in the diagnostics category: could probably be done after all drivers. That leaves just a CD/DVD driver and a webcam driver unaccounted for. So my two related questions are these: How critical is the driver installation order and which one do I follow? (Keep in mind this is for an upgrade, not a fresh install.) Where in the order do I insert the CD/DVD and the webcam drivers (if needed) ? Dell's driver download page provides (in theory) the list of all downloads relevant to my specific machine, via the service tag. But do I actually need to reinstall all of them? some? none? How does one determine this? They do label each with Recommended or Optional, so do I need to reinstall all the recommended ones? (Part of the reason for my perplexed frown is that I wonder why I would need to reinstall a CD/DVD driver since I would already be using the drive to install the OS!)

• D-Link DIR-300 slows down / loses network

  there are 2 buildings (A and B). In bldg A is an open WLAN (which I'm allowed to use btw). In bldg B is a computer that I want to connect to that network. So I flashed an old D-Link DIR-300 AP with DD-WRT, mounted it to the wall (bldg B) near a window, attached a 13 dBi directional antenna (pointing to bldg A) and configured it as AP client in that wireless network. Then there's another AP, connected to the D-Link AP, acting as standard access point, which the computer is connected to. That's basically working so far, but: Every now and then the connection is lost. Not the connection between the computer and the D-Link (I can access the DD-WRT admin page normally) or the connection between the D-Link and the WLAN (in Status - Wireless it says it's still connected to the network), but when I want to access a web page (which only works if I'm connected to the wireless network from bldg A), my Firefox keeps "Looking for" (name resolution) without finding anything. When I reset the D-Link (power off, power on) in this situation, after some moments, everything's working fine again (Internet access). I've no idea why this is happening, but usually it's at most every few weeks (most times when nobody was using the computer, so no traffic). Compared to the connection speed when I connect directly to the WLAN in bldg A (Laptop), the speed in bldg B is rather slow, but I have the impression that this difference is worse in the last few days. A few minutes ago, I got 582 KB/s down and 911 KB/s up in bldg A (directly/laptop) and 84 KB/s down and 9 KB/s up in bldg B. The speed in bldg B used to be way higher (I remember 200 KB/s up) while the actual network speed in bldg A was lower than it is now (close to those 200). I'm aware that the wireless connection between those buildings should slow things down, but I'm wondering why this difference has become that extreme. Thanks for any tips... Update: I currently want to upload a large file (1.5 GB) via FTP (FileZilla). Since that caused the D-Link to disconnect (as described in first post), I took my laptop to bldg A, connected directly to the original WLAN (bypassing my D-Link) and tried the same upload. Guess what - same issue: At some point the connection is dead (at this point I would have reset my D-Link if I was connected to it). Just as the D-Link, my laptop is still connected, but not even name resolution is working ("Looking for..." in Firefox). After reconnecting, it's working again. Maybe my D-Link isn't the problem at all...

I have been experiencing that problem on my development cluster for a while too (with DSE 4.0.0, 4.0.1 and 4.0.2), but I thought this was because of some configuration error on my part. The problem has appeared spontaneously at some point too. The Cassandra cluster has been working very smoothly with a good write throughput. It is very stable and has enough resources to work with. We did not notice any problems with the applications that depend on it.

• Weird nfs performance: 1 thread better than 8, 8 better than 2!

  I'm trying to determine the cause of poor nfs performance between two Xen Virtual Machines (client & server) running on the same host. Specifically, the speed at which I can sequentially read a 1GB file on the client is much lower than what would be expected based on the measured network connection speed between the two VMs and the measured speed of reading the file directly on the server. The VMs are running Ubuntu 9.04 and the server is using the nfs-kernel-server package. According to various NFS tuning resources, changing the number of nfsd threads (in my case kernel threads) can affect performance. Usually this advice is framed in terms of increasing the number from the default of 8 on heavily-used servers. What I find in my current configuration: RPCNFSDCOUNT=8: (default): 13.5-30 seconds to cat a 1GB file on the client so 35-80MB/sec RPCNFSDCOUNT=16: 18s to cat the file 60MB/s RPCNFSDCOUNT=1: 8-9 seconds to cat the file (!!?!) 125MB/s RPCNFSDCOUNT=2: 87s to cat the file 12MB/s I should mention that the file I'm exporting is on a RevoDrive SSD mounted on the server using Xen's PCI-passthrough; on the server I can cat the file in under seconds ( 250MB/s). I am dropping caches on the client before each test. I don't really want to leave the server configured with just one thread as I'm guessing that won't work so well when there are multiple clients, but I might be misunderstanding how that works. I have repeated the tests a few times (changing the server config in between) and the results are fairly consistent. So my question is: why is the best performance with 1 thread? A few other things I have tried changing, to little or no effect: increasing the values of /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ipfrag_low_thresh and /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ipfrag_high_thresh to 512K, 1M from the default 192K,256K increasing the value of /proc/sys/net/core/rmem_default and /proc/sys/net/core/rmem_max to 1M from the default of 128K mounting with client options rsize=32768, wsize=32768 From the output of sar -d I understand that the actual read sizes going to the underlying device are rather small (<100 bytes) but this doesn't cause a problem when reading the file locally on the client. The RevoDrive actually exposes two "SATA" devices /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, then dmraid picks up a fakeRAID-0 striped across them which I have mounted to /mnt/ssd and then bind-mounted to /export/ssd. I've done local tests on my file using both locations and see the good performance mentioned above. If answers/comments ask for more details I will add them.

• What would cause my SendMail server not to acknowledge receiving a TCP Sequence?

  My TCP/IP Stack knowledge is a little rusty so please bear with me.... I have a CentOS 5.7 server with SendMail and am having seeing intermittent timeout issues sending email (particularly larger email) to other remote domains. It doesn't happen with all attachments or recipient domains. Just some. After some extended troubleshooting, I think I've narrowed it down to TCP Sequences not being acknowledged. Here's a breakdown of the TCP session from a packet capture I collected directly on my MTA (fooMTA): Packet 1 - 11: Standard TCP handshake followed by initial SMTP conversation. No errors. Packet #12 Recipient MTA: TCP sequence 231. Ack 91. Packet #13 FooMTA: TCP sequence 91. Ack 305. Packet #14 FooMTA: TCP sequence 1115. Ack 305. Packet #15 Recipient MTA: TCP sequence 305. Ack 2495. Packet #16 FooMTA: TCP sequence 2495. Ack 305. Packet #17 FooMTA: TCP sequence 5255. Ack 305. Packet #18: Recipient MTA: TCP sequence 305. Ack 5255. Packet #19: FooMTA: TCP sequence 6635. Ack 305. Ack 305 It keeps going like this with my server still thinking it hasn’t received sequence 305… in response the remote side eventually retransmits its prior data thinking that it never arrived. Eventually the gap gets so large that no new data is sent and the remote MTA keeps retransmitting old stuff. This contributes to an exponential backoff and eventually the remote side gives up. What’s strange to me is that I see the “missing” TCP sequence (305 in this case) arriving back to my server (via a packet capture collected directly from fooMTA) So I don’t get why my server keeps asking for it. Could this be firewall related? What would be the next step in troubleshooting?

• Why does this service refuse to start on Windows server 2003?

  We have a Windows 2003 server with Cebos MQ1 (ver. 7 and ver. GRI) products installed that have been operational for years. After installing Microsoft 2010 C++ Redistributable package needed for other development, the MQ1 GRI service now fails to start. Event logs showed that two additional updates (.NET4 and the 2010 C++ Redistributable SP2) where installed by the redistributable as well. As soon as we discovered the MQ1 service was not starting properly, we removed these three installed packages. However the service still does not start; the dialog that pops up states 'The service started then stopped. '. Event logs when we attempt to start the service show nothing; IE: No errors, crashes, failures, or other information related to this service. Executing the MQ1Serv.exe directly specifies an issue of 'Missing command line operation, must specify install, uninstall and company abbreviation.' sc query MQ1Service(GRI) shows a clean exit for the Win32ExitCode of 0x0. Attempting to reinstall the client or server software gives an error of 'The procedure entry point ReInitializeCriticalSection could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.' at the 'Registering Libraries' stage. At this point, further research has stated that the required function is in URL.dll and to verify the library is not corrupted. Running an sfc /scannow on the server has replaced a few DLLS; including the URL.DLL to versions from 2005. This actually broke other applications which required a reinstall (one of them being IE 7). After reinstall and updates, url.dll version is 7.0.5730.13 (2009) and Kernel32.dll is version 5.2.3790.4480 (2009). The MQ1 GRI service still will not start, specifying the same error as previous 'Service started then stopped'. Running a disassembler on Kernel32.dll and Url.dll show no functions named ReinitializeCriticalSection. Attempting the reinstall of the MQ1 client and server as well as starting the service again, fails once more. However, setting the compatibility mode on the MQ1 client install exe to 'Windows 95' actually gets the program to install. Setting the compatibility mode on the MQ1 server service does not enable it to start. I have been researching this problem for nearly a week and besides the advice to scan and replace url.dll, have come to no successful conclusions. This service was operational prior to the 2010 C++ install, without any additional parameters or settings. After removing the C++ install and all servicepacks/updates it installed silently, still does not correct the issue of the MQ1 GRI service not starting. Q: Has anyone else run into this or similar issue while attempting to get a service initialized? What have I overlooked or what else can I try in order to get this service started??

• how can I give openvpn clients access to a dns server (bind9) that is located on the same machine as the openvpn server

  I currently have a debian server that is running an openvpn server. I also have a dns server (bind9) that I would like give allow access to by the connected openvpn clients, but I am unsure as of how to do this, I already known how to send dns options to the clients using push "dhcp-option DNS x.x.x.x" but I am just unsure how give the clients access to the dns server that is located on the same machine as the vpn server, so if anyone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. • Synergy 1.5 crash (OSX 10.6.8)

  THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS I recently installed Synergy 1.5 r2278 (for Mac OSX 10.6.8) and was using it fine for most of the day, then it decided to stop working (the only thing I changed systemwise was the screensaver - and then after it started crashing disabled it - to see if it would resolve). When I start Synergy (on the Mac - Client) it says: after about 5 seconds (and successfully connecting to the Server) "synergyc quit unexpectedly" Here is the crash log (w/ binery info removed - too long for post requirements) Process: synergyc [1026] Path: /Applications/Synergy.app/Contents/MacOS/synergyc Identifier: synergy Version: ???   I'm trying to join together two videos on top of each other. I already did these two ffmpeg commands ffmpeg -i 2_Out_of_Control.VOB -aspect 16:9 \ -vf "yadif=0:-1:0,crop=w=714:h=476:x=6:y=0,scale=1280:720,boxblur=lp=13" \ -c:v libx264 -preset medium \ -c:a copy \ '2(blurred)Out_of_Control.mp4' ffmpeg -i 2_Out_of_Control.VOB \ -vf "yadif=0:-1:0,crop=w=714:h=476:x=6:y=0,scale=1080:720" \ -c:v libx264 -preset medium \ -c:a copy \ '2(clear)Out_of_Control.mp4' I'm currently stuck on making the "clear" version on top of the "blurred" version. I'm not sure how to do that. Can anybody help please? Been googling for around 2 days already. Only achieved it by using OpenShot but yeah, would prefer if there is an ffmpeg command to merge the two videos on top of each other.   I've gone through the instructions found at http://blogs.msdn.com/davidebb/archive/2009/04/15/a-new-flag-to-optimize-asp-net-compilation-behavior.aspx, but I'm not sure if it's working. This is for a .NeET 3.5 SP1 project. When I add the attribute to my web.config, I get the warning The 'optimizeCompilations' attribute is not declared. Does this work for the ASP.NET Development Server? How can I test that it's working?

For starters, I can get better non-batch insert performance from SQL Server Express. What really struck me, however, was the slow performance of the find_nnnn queries. Why is retrieving data from MongoDB so slow? What am I missing? Edit: This was all on the local machine, no network latency or anything. MongoDB's CPU usage ran at about 75% the entire time the test was running. Edit 2: Also, I ran a trace on the benchmark program and confirmed that 50% of the CPU time spent was waiting for MongoDB to return data, so it's not a performance issue with the C# driver.

• Calling a .NET web service (WSE 3.0, WS-Security) from JAXWS-RI

  I'm writing a JAXWS-RI client that must call a .NET Web Service that is using WS-Security. The service's WSDL does not contain any WS-Security info, but I have an example soap message from the service's authors and know that I must include wsse:Security headers, including X:509 tokens. I've been researching, and I've seen example of folks calling this type of web service from Axis and CXF (in conjunction with Rampart and/or WSS4J), but nothing about using plain JAXWS-RI itself. However, I'm (unfortunately) constrained to using JAXWS-RI by my gov't client. Does anyone have any examples/documentation of doing this from JAXWS-RI? I need to ultimately generate a SOAP header that looks something like the one below - this is a sample soap:header from a .NET client written by the service's authors. • SerialPort ReadLine() after Thread.Sleep() goes crazy

  Hi everybody, I've been fighting with this issue for a day and I can't find answer for it. I am trying to read data from GPS device trough COM port in Compact Framework C#. I am using SerialPort class (actually my own ComPort class boxing SerialPort, but it adds only two fields I need, nothing special). Anyway.. I am running while loop in a separate thread which reads line from the port, analyze NMEA data, print them, catch all exceptions and then I Sleep(200) the thread, cause I need CPU for other threads... Without Sleep it works fine, but uses 100% CPU..   Hi. I have 2 web apps running on the same server. The first is www.nimikri.com and the other is www.hourjar.com. Both apps share the same IP address (75.127.100.175). My server is through a shared hosting company. I've been testing my apps, and at first all my emails were being delivered to me just fine. Then a few days ago every email from both apps got dumped into my spam box (in gmail and google apps). So far the apps have just been sending emails to me and nobody else, so I know people aren't manually flagging them as spam. I did a reverse DNS lookup for my IP and the results I got were these: 100.127.75.in-addr.arpa NS DNS2.GNAX.NET. 100.127.75.in-addr.arpa NS DNS1.GNAX.NET. Should the reverse DNS lookup point to nimikri.com and hourjar.com, or are they set up fine the way they are?
