• Error monitoring/handling on webservers

  Hi everybody, We have a web server that we're about to launch a number of applications onto. They will all share database and memcached servers, but each application has it's own mySQL database and all memcached keys per application, is prefixed. Possible scenario: If a memcached server in our cluster goes boom, we want someone (operative system admin) to be automatically contacted by email/iphone push notification or in any other appropriate way. If we we're about to install 150 identical applications for our customers on our servers, and a memcached server dies - all 150 applications will individually find this out and contact our system admin, which most certainly is going to think about getting a new job where he or she isn't about to be woken up by getting 150 messages sent 4:15 in the morning. Possible solution: One idea is to set up an external server for error handling that gets a $_POST or cURL request sent, and handles storage of the error message depending on the seriousness of the actual error message. It would of course check upon receiving the error call, that if the same memcached server have already been reported as offline, there would be no need to spam the system admin with additional reminders... The questions: What's a good approach on how to handle errors? How does the big guys in the industry handle this? Thanks!

  Here's my problem: I am using the org.eclipse.ui.popupMenus extension point for adding a sub-menu whose Action that is bounded to the following class: public class MyAction implements IObjectActionDelegate { private Logic logic = Logic.getInstance(); // Singleton public void setActivePart(IAction a, IWorkbenchPart targetPart) { // Nothing here } public void run(IAction a) { // Do something... } public void selectionChanged(IAction a, ISelection s) { a.setEnabled(logic.isEnabled(s)); } } This action is working correctly in most cases (including the call a.setEnabled() in selectionChanged()). My problem at the very first time my action is being invoked. The selectionChanged method is called only after the menu item has been displayed (and not when the user has made the selection) which means that the call to a.setEnabled() will have no affect. Any ideas on how to make my action receive selectionChanged() notifications even before the fist time it is being invoked?

• Why does the CPU window always appear when trying to debug my project after a rebuild in Delphi 2010

  Hi, Whenever I rebuild my application and try to step into a break-point the CPU window always appears. From what I understand the CPU window appears when DCU does not match up with the source file, however, in my case the DCU's are defintely being re-compiled and there are no old ones lying around or anything like that. The strange thing here is if I close down the application and re-open the project, place the breakpoint and run it works fine. I can even modify files and just press F9 to run the project and it works fine....it only seems to be when I rebuild the project (via IDE Project menu or the project context menu) that this CPU window never breaks into the source (even though it can find it!). I also noticed in the callstack a unit called Generics is always the top of the stack, never the unit my break point is in, this is no way related to where my break point is. Any ideas?

I am not seeing any function in the JQuery API for this either. Can anyone provide some insight?

• How can I inherit form and access controls from mother form?

  Hi, I'm in the middle of writing my project and I have this problem: I try to write a library and I want to use it in my application. In library I have a form with menu strip, tool bar, list view, tree view and etc. Everything in library is protected. In my application I have created the form which inherit form the library. I can change and add new functionality to list view and tree view using designer panel in VS 2008 but I don't have access to menu strip and tool bar, even though they are protected. Why is that so? I will be thankful for some advice.

• Help me sort programing languages a bit

  Hi, so I asked here few days ago about C# and its principles. Now, if I may, I have some additional general questions about some languages, becouse for novice like me, it seems a bit confusing. To be exact I want to ask more about language functions capabilities than syntax and so. To be honest, its just these special functions that bothers me and make me so confused. For exmaple, C has its printf(), Pascal has writeln() and so. I know in basic the output in assembler of these funtions would be similiar, every language has more or less its special functions. For console output, for file manipulation, etc. But all these functions are de-facto part of its OS API, so why is for example in C distinguished between C standard library functions and (on Windows) WinAPI functions when even printf() has to use some Windows feature, call some of its function to actually show desired text on console window, becouse the actuall "showing" is done by OS. Where is the line between language functions and system API? Now languages I dont quite understand - Python, Ruby and similiar. To be more specific, I know they are similiar to java and C# in term they are compiled into bytecode. But, I do not unerstand what are its capabilities in term of building GUI applications. I saw tutorial for using Ruby to program GUI applications on Linux and Windows. But isn´t that just some kind of upgrade? I mean fram other tutorials It seemed like these languages was first intended for small scripts than building big applications. I hope you understand why I am confused. If you do, please help me sort it out a bit, I have no one to ask.

We can't change the ERP web app because its a closed DLL, in this case we made some extended functionality in our custom internal web app and we are willing to put this functionality on the "menu" of the ERP web app. I need to integrate the two applications in the following way: When I click in the menu of the ERP web app, I want that our internal web app assert that the click have come from our ERP web app and not typed in the URL, this is possible?

And I want to do several checks to see if an attribute is true and if it is, write an additional line in the mail. How can I do this? • In Visual Studio 2010, how do you invoke the "View In Browser" feature on an MVC app?

  In Visual Studio 2010, you can right-click an aspx page in a web forms app, or on the web forms app itself in the solution explorer, and you get "View in Browser" in your context menu. In ASP.NET MVC projects, this item doesn't seem to be available in the context menu. The only way I know to run the app is to set the MVC app as a startup project and hit CTRL+F5. But, if there are two MVC apps in the solution, this doesn't really work. How do you accomplish this for mvc apps?

• In your opinion what web technology would be best suited for building dropdown menus?

  What I need is a slide menu that is activated by one click. The menu then appears and doesn't disappear until user clicks any where else on the current page. I don't require any effects but need something reliable that I can style with ease, put a thumbnail of a photo inside change dimensions, add mouse over effects etc. I've done a several searches on google and quite a lot of options are coming up and I'm not too sure which would be best for me. I've seen some people suggestion html + css3 and others suggest jquery. Does any of these options have a benefit over the other? I would appreciate your opinions and maybe some links thanks.

  In my winform app in VB.NET i want to use the localization option. But i have a few questions/problems. I'm using a menu strip to select an other language. But it seems that is doesn't change my menustip text to my selected language. It does change my labels, buttons, and textboxes but menu strips doesnt seem to change when i choose an other language. Also is it possible to get those resx files such as MyForm.fr-FR.resx compiled so it isn't an external file outside my app? Or to get those files in an Language folder at the same location of my app, so i don't have all those fr-FR, nl-Nl folders in the same location as my program.

  We're trying to figure out the best way to write tests in our test plan. Specifically, when writing a test that is meant to be used by anyone including QA staff, should the steps in the test be very specific or more broad giving the tester more leeway in how the task can be accomplished. As a very simple example, if you're testing opening a document in word processing document, should the test read: Using the mouse, open the file menu Choose "Open File..." in the file menu In the open file dialog that appears, navigate to x and double-click the document called y OR Bring up the file open dialog Open the file y Now I realize one answer is probably going to be "it depends on what you're trying to test" but I'm trying to answer a broader question here: If the test steps are too specific do we risk a) making the testing process to laborious and tedious and more importantly b) do we risk missing something because we wrote down too specific a path to achieve a goal. Alternatively, if we make it broad do we depend too much on the whims of the tester at the time and lose crucial testing of paths that are more common to customers/clients?

• IE 6 dropdown selection area too narrow

  Hi, I have a dropdown menu with the width set to 142px however the selection area when you drop down the menu needs to be larger as it has text that exceeds this width. Firefox (and most modern browsers) is clever and extends the selection area to fit in this text. However IE 6 and unchecked newer versions of IE do not show this text and keep the selection area the same width as the dropdown unclicked. The problem lies here, how can I get IE to extend the selection area where you click the selection you want without increasing the width of the dropdown area with out the dropdown selection showing.   Well i want from the drop down menu(Menu Item List) one item to be working as an link, to open an url/website in safari - thats it. When this is so simple, why no one come up with a clue here - I tried many different ways in Xcode, with Apple Xcode Samples... i think i need an AppDelegate.m, drag or link some parts, get actions... i failed to get it going somewhere - now i'm lost.   Using the event click with live function leads to strange behavior when using Firefox*. With live in Firefox, click is triggered when right-clicking also! The same does not happen in Internet Explorer 7 neither in Google Chrome. Example: Without live, go to demo and try right clicking the paragraphs. A dialog menu should appear. With live, go to demo and try right clicking "Click me!". Now both dialog menu and "Another paragraph" appear. *tested with firefox 3.5.3

  Hi people, Is there a friendlier way to get an instance of FontMetrics than FontMetrics fm = Graphics.getFontMetrics(Font); I hate this way because of the following example: If you want to create in a game a menu and you want all the menuitems in the center of the screen you need fontmetrics. But, mostly, menuitems are clickable. So I create an array of Rectangles and all the rectangles fits around the items, so when the mouse is pressed, I can simply use for (int i = 0; i < rects.length; i++) if (rects[i].contains(mouseX, mouseY)) { ... } But to create the rects I also need FontMetrics for their coordinates. So this mean that I have to construct all my rectangles in the paint-method of my menu. So I want a way to get the FontMetrics so I can construct the Rectangles in a method called by the constructor.   I can use the shared editing feature of ECF with Java fine perfectly fine. When I try to do it with Python files it also works, but there is no syntax highlighting. I installed PyDev to get syntax highlighting, but then the context menu does not have the "share editor" option. I removed PyDev and the option came back. I installed Dynamic Languages Toolkit in hopes that its Python syntax highlighting was compatible and I got the same effect (context menu lacks the "share editor" option). Is there a way to have a shared editing session with Python files and syntax highlighting?

  Hi everybody, We have a web server that we're about to launch a number of applications on. On the server-level we have managed to work out the error handling with the help of Hyperic to notify the person who is in charge in the event of a database/memcached server is going down. However, we are still in the need of handling those eventual error and log events that happen on application level to improve the applications for our customers, before the customers notices. So, what's then a good solution to do this? Utilizing PHP:s own error log would quickly become cloggered if we would run a big number of applications at the same time. It's probably isn't the best option if you like structure. One idea is to build a off-site lightweight error-handling application that has a REST/JSON API that receives encrypted and serialized arrays of error messages and stores them into a database. Maybe it could, depending on the severity of the error also be directly inputted into our bug tracker. Could be a few well spent hours, but it seems like a quite fragile solution and I am sure that there's better more-reliable alternatives out there already. Thanks,

  The following code doesn't compile for me in MSVC2005: std::vector<CMenu> vec(10); CMenu is an MFC menu object (such as a context menu). Through some testing I learned that CMenu does not have a public copy constructor. To do what I wanted to do, I needed to use a dynamic array. CMenu* menus = new CMenu[10]; // ... delete [] menus; Of course, now I've lost all the benefits of using an STL container. Do I have any other options?
