• ColdFusion Server crash after thousands of HTTP requests

  We are running ColdFusion 8 on a windows server 2003 VPS with an API that exposes student records to a partner API through a connector. Our API returns around 50k student records serialized in XML format pretty seamlessly. My question originates when something very frightening happened today when we tested our connector to our partners API. Our entire website and web host went down. We assumed that our host was just having some issues and after 4 hours with no resolution and no response from their customer service we finally got a response from them claiming that they had an "unauthorized user" in their network. After our server was back up we were unable to connect to our website as if the web service or coldfusion itself had froze. This is really where my concern comes from as I fear we may have overloaded the web service. As I mentioned before we tried sending over 50k HTTP POST requests over to our partner's API, however everything stopped after around 1.6k Is this bad practice or is there some sort of rate limiting I can relax somewhere in server configuration? We managed to find a workaround, but it bypasses our connector which is critical to our design. This would have been a one time deal as the purpose of so many requests was to populate our partner's website with current data, after that hourly syncs will keep requests down to around 100 per hour. UPDATE Our partner API is owned and operated by Pardot. We are converting students to prospects by passing student data to their API which unfortunately only seems to accept one student at a time. For that reason we have to do all 50k requests individually. Our server has 4GB of RAM, an Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.8GHz running Windows Server 2003 SP2. I monitored the server during a 100 student sync, a 400 student sync, and a 1.4k student sync with the following results: 100 students - 2.25GB of Memory, 30-40% CPU utilization, 0.2-0.3% network bandwidth 400 students - 2.30GB of Memory, 30-50% CPU utilization, 0.2-1.0% network bandwidth 1.4k students - 2.30GB of Memory, 30-70% CPU utilization, 0.2-1.0% network bandwidth I know this is a far cry from 50k students, but I don't want to risk taking down our CMS system again assuming that was the cause. • Freezes (not crashes) with GCD, blocks and Core Data

  I have recently rewritten my Core Data driven database controller to use Grand Central Dispatch to manage fetching and importing in the background. Controller can operate on 2 NSManagedContext's: NSManagedObjectContext *mainMoc instance variable for main thread. this contexts is used only by quick access for UI by main thread or by dipatch_get_main_queue() global queue. NSManagedObjectContext *bgMoc for background tasks (importing and fetching data for NSFetchedresultsController for tables). This background tasks are fired ONLY by user defined queue: dispatch_queue_t bgQueue (instance variable in database controller object). Fetching data for tables is done in background to not block user UI when bigger or more complicated predicates are performed. I know this pattern is not completely clean for at last 2 reasons: bgQueue not necessarily fires the same thread after suspension but since it is serial, it should not matter much (there is never 2 threads trying access bgMoc NSManagedObjectContext dedicated to it). Sometimes table view data source methods will ask NSFetchedResultsController for info from bgMoc (since fetch is done on bgQueue) like sections count, fetched objects in section count, etc.... Event with this flaws this approach works pretty well of the 95% of application running time until ... AND HERE GOES MY QUESTION: Sometimes, very randomly application freezes but not crashes. It does not response on any touch and the only way to get it back to live is to restart it completely (switching back to and from background does not help). No exception is thrown and nothing is printed to the console (I have Breakpoints set for all exception in Xcode). I have tried to debug it using Instruments (time profiles especially) to see if there is something hard going on on main thread but nothing is showing up. I am aware that GCD and Core Data are the main suspects here, but I have no idea how to track / debug this. Let me point out, that this also happens when I dispatch all the tasks to the queues asynchronously only (using dispatch_async everywhere). This makes me think it is not just standard deadlock. Is there any possibility or hints of how could I get more info what is going on? Some extra debug flags, Instruments magical tricks or build setting etc... Any suggestions on what could be the cause are very much appreciated as well as (or) pointers to how to implement background fetching for NSFetchedResultsController and background importing in better way.

• Why C# doesn't implement indexed properties ?

  I know, I know... Eric Lippert's answer to this kind of question is usually something like "because it wasn't worth the cost of designing, implementing, testing and documenting it". But still, I'd like a better explanation... I was reading this blog post about new C# 4 features, and in the section about COM Interop, the following part caught my attention : By the way, this code uses one more new feature: indexed properties (take a closer look at those square brackets after Range.) But this feature is available only for COM interop; you cannot create your own indexed properties in C# 4.0. OK, but why ? I already knew and regretted that it wasn't possible to create indexed properties in C#, but this sentence made me think again about it. I can see several good reasons to implement it : the CLR supports it (for instance, PropertyInfo.GetValue has an index parameter), so it's a pity we can't take advantage of it in C# it is supported for COM interop, as shown in the article (using dynamic dispatch) it is implemented in VB.NET it is already possible to create indexers, i.e. to apply an index to the object itself, so it would probably be no big deal to extend the idea to properties, keeping the same syntax and just replacing this with a property name It would allow to write that kind of things : public class Foo { private string[] _values = new string[3]; public string Values[int index] { get { return _values[index]; } set { _values[index] = value; } } } Currently the only workaround that I know is to create an inner class (ValuesCollection for instance) that implements an indexer, and change the Values property so that it returns an instance of that inner class. This is very easy to do, but annoying... So perhaps the compiler could do it for us ! • Objective-C woes: cellForRowAtIndexPath crashes.

  I want to the user to be able to search for a record in a DB. The fetch and the results returned work perfectly. I am having a hard time setting the UItableview to display the result tho. The application continually crashes at cellForRowAtIndexPath. Please, someone help before I have a heart attack over here. Somebody suggested in my previous question to do the following:- create a temporary table and insert here all relevant data that might end up in the final result set run several updates on this table, joining the required tables one at a time instead of all of them at the same time finally perform a query on this temporary table to extract the end result All this was done in a stored procedure, the end result has passed unit tests, and is blazing fast. I have never worked with temporary tables till now. Only if I could get some hints, kind of schematic representations so that I can start with... Is there something faulty with the query? What can be the reason behind 10+ seconds of execution time? How tags work in this system? When a tutor registers, tags are entered and tag relations are created with respect to tutor's details like name, surname etc. When a Tutors create packs, again tags are entered and tag relations are created with respect to pack's details like pack name, description etc. tag relations for tutors stored in tutors_tag_relations and those for packs stored in learning_packs_tag_relations. • postfix 5.7.1 Relay access denied when sending mail with cron

  Reluctant to ask because there is so much here about 'postfix relay access denied' but I cannot find my case: I use php (Zend Framework) to send emails outside my network using the Google mail server because I could not send mail outside my server (user: web). However when I sent out an email via cron (user: root, I believe), still using ZF, using the same mail config/credentials, I get the message: '5.7.1 Relay access denied' I guess I need to know one of two things: 1. How can I use the google smtp server from cron 2. What do I need to change in my config to send mail using my own server instead of google Though the answer to 2. is the more structural solution I assume, I am quite happy with an answer to 1. as well because I think Google is better at server maintaince (security/spam) than I am. • Android: preferences not being stored automatically

  I'm trying to use preference screen. I'm following all steps from online tutorial (once I couldn't get it working, I found other tutorials, and steps seem to be fine). I get to preferences screen, edit values, return to calling activity (via hardware return button). In DDMS perspective FileExplorer shows package_name_preferences.xml file with preferences that should be stored. It contains: <?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8' standalone='yes' ?> <map> <string name="false">kg</string> </map> while I expect (data line only shown). <string name="weight">kg</string> Also, if I go change only 1 preference, the same value changes, not a new row is created. I'm just tempted to write my own preference classes that would store data in files or DB, but I know that preferences should work, it just doesn't save properly my stuff. • Performance surprise with "as" and nullable types

  I'm just revising chapter 4 of C# in Depth which deals with nullable types, and I'm adding a section about using the "as" operator, which allows you to write: object o = ...; int? x = o as int?; if (x.HasValue) { ... // Use x.Value in here } I thought this was really neat, and that it could improve performance over the C# 1 equivalent, using "is" followed by a cast - after all, this way we only need to ask for dynamic type checking once, and then a simple value check. This appears not to be the case, however. I've included a sample test app below, which basically sums all the integers within an object array - but the array contains a lot of null references and string references as well as boxed integers. The benchmark measures the code you'd have to use in C# 1, the code using the "as" operator, and just for kicks a LINQ solution. To my astonishment, the C# 1 code is 20 times faster in this case - and even the LINQ code (which I'd have expected to be slower, given the iterators involved) beats the "as" code. Is the .NET implementation of isinst for nullable types just really slow? Is it the additional unbox.any that causes the problem? Is there another explanation for this? At the moment it feels like I'm going to have to include a warning against using this in performance sensitive situations... • AD-Integrated DNS failure: "Access was Denied"

  I have a single Windows 2008 R2 server configured as a domain controller with Active Directory Domain Services and DNS Server. The DNS Server was recently uninstalled and reinstalled in an attempt to fix a (possibly unrelated) problem; the event log was previously flooded with errors (#4000, "The DNS Server was unable to open Active Directory...") which reinstalling did not fix. However, while before it was at least showing and resolving names from the local network (slowly), now it's showing nothing at all. (The original error started with a #4015 error "The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory," followed by a long string of #4000 and a few #4004. This may have been caused when a new DNS name was recently added, but I can't be sure of the timing.) Attempting to manage the DNS through Administrative Tools > DNS brings up an error: The server SERVERNAME could not be contacted. The error was: Access was denied. Would you like to add it anyway? Selecting yes just puts a SERVERNAME item on the list, but with all the configuration options grayed out. I attempted editing my hosts file as per this post but to no avail. Running dcdiag, it does identify the home server properly, but fails right away testing connectivity with: Starting test: Connectivity The host blahblahblahyaddayaddayadda could not be resolved to an IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server name, etc. Got error while checking LDAP and RPC connectivity. Please check your firewall settings. ......................... SERVERNAME failed test Connectivity Adding the blahblahblahyaddayaddayadda address to hosts (pointing at 127.0.0.1), the connectivity test succeeded but it didn't seem to solve the fundamental problem (Access was denied) so I hashed it out again. Primary DNS server is properly pointing at 127.0.0.1 according to ipconfig /all. And the DNS server is forwarding requests to external addresses properly (if slowly), but the resolving of local network names is borked. The DNS database itself is small enough that I am (grudgingly) able to rebuild it if need be, but the DNS Server doesn't seem willing to let me work with (or around) it at all. (and yes before you ask there are no system backups available) Where do I go from here? • Print driver installs failing

  All of the Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise machines in my organization are failing to install a good number of printer drivers that previously installed without issue. This only happens with printer drivers. And not with all printer drivers. Just some. Network drivers, video drivers, etc. have had no problems. The error that appears in Device Manager is "The driver cannot be installed because it is either not digitally signed or not signed in the appropriate manner." It appears to be signed fine though. It has an accompanying .CAT file and worked previously. If I take it off the domain, it installs fine. But it doesn't seem to have anything to do with Group Policy. I moved the machine to an OU that blocks inheritance, ran a gpupdate, ran rsop.msc to verify, and tried again. And it still didn't work. Likewise, I removed a machine from the domain, manually set all of the domain Group Policy settings in gpedit.msc, and tried that way, and it worked fine. So it seems like the Group Policy settings are irrelevant. What other domain-related issue could be causing this though? Any ideas on what to try next would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure where to go from here. Thanks!

• Quartz Thread Execution Parallel or Sequential?

  We have a quartz based scheduler application which runs about 1000 jobs per minute which are evenly distributed across seconds of each minute i.e. about 16-17 jobs per second. Ideally, these 16-17 jobs should fire at same time, however our first statement, which simply logs the time of execution, of execute method of the job is being called very late. e.g. let us assume we have 1000 jobs scheduled per minute from 05:00 to 05:04. So, ideally the job which is scheduled at 05:03:50 should have logged the first statement of the execute method at 05:03:50, however, it is doing it at about 05:06:38. I have tracked down the time taken by the scheduled job which comes around 15-20 milliseconds. This scheduled job is fast enough because we just send a message on an ActiveMQ queue. We have specified the number of threads of quartz to be 100 and even tried with increasing it to 200 and more, but no gain. One more thing we noticed is that logs from scheduler are coming sequential after first 1 minute i.e. [Quartz_Worker_28] <Some log statement> .. .. [Quartz_Worker_29] <Some log statement> .. .. [Quartz_Worker_30] <Some log statement> .. .. So it suggesting that after some time quartz is running threads almost sequential. May be this is happening due to the time taken in notifying the job completion to persistence store (which is a separate postgres database in this case) and/or context switching. What can be the reason behind this strange behavior? • Dynamically sized UIWebView in a UITableViewCell with auto layout - constraint violation

  I've got a UITableViewCell which contains a UIWebView. The table view cell adjusts it's height depending on the web view contents. I've got it all working fine, however when the view loads, I get a constraint violation exception in the debugger (the app continues running and functionally works fine, but I'd like to resolve this exception if possible). How I've got it set up: The TableView sets the cell height like this: -(CGFloat)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView heightForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { if(indexPath.section == 0) { [_topCell layoutIfNeeded]; CGFloat finalHeight = [_topCell.contentView systemLayoutSizeFittingSize:UILayoutFittingCompressedSize].height; return finalHeight + 1; } The cell constraints are as follows: Arbitrary 7px offset from the cell's contentView (top) to the webView Web view has arbitrary fixed height constraint of 62px (will expand later once content loads) Arbitrary 8px offset from the webView to the cell's contentView (bottom) in my viewDidLoad, I tell the webView to go and load a URL, and in the webViewDidFinishLoad, I update the web view height constraint, like this -(void)webViewDidFinishLoad:(UIWebView *)webView { CGSize fittingSize = [webView sizeThatFits:CGSizeZero]; // fittingSize is approx 500 [self.tableView beginUpdates]; // Exceptions happen on the following line setting the constant _topCell.webViewHeightConstraint.constant = fittingSize.height; [_topCell layoutSubviews]; [self.tableView endUpdates]; } The exception looks like this: Unable to simultaneously satisfy constraints. It's implied that the constraint which sets the height of the web view is going to be broken, however the web view does get it's height correctly set, and the tableview renders perfectly well. From my guesses, it looks like the newly increased web view height constraint (it's about 500px after the web view loads) is going to conflict with the <NSAutoresizingMaskLayoutConstraint:0x10967c210 h=--& v=--& V:[cellContent(78)] setting the cell height to 78 (put there by interface builder). This makes sense, however I don't want that cell content to have a fixed height of 78px, I want it to increase it's height, and functionally, it actually does this, just with these exceptions. I've tried setting _topCell.contentView.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = NO; to attempt to remove the NSAutoresizingMaskLayoutConstraint - this stops the exceptions, but then all the other layout is screwed up and the web view is about 10px high in the middle of the table view for no reason. I've also tried setting _topCell.contentView.autoresizingMask |= UIViewAutoresizingFlexibleHeight; in the viewDidLoad to hopefully affect the contentView 78px height constraint, but this has no effect Any help would be much appreciated

• How to make sure that grub does use menu.lst?

  On my Ubuntu 9.04 ("Karmic") laptop I suspect grub does not use the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. What happens on boot is that I see a blank screen and nothing happens. When I press ESC I see a boot list which is different from what I would expect from the menu.lst file. The menu lines are different and when I choose the first entry it does not use the kernel options that are in the first entry in menu.lst. Where do the entries that grub uses come from? How can I find out what happens, is there a log? I could not find anything in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/dmesg about grub using a menu.lst. How can I set it to work like expected? • CSS: Labels in table columns

  Hello. BACKGROUND: I would like to have small labels in columns of a table. I'm using some implemented parts of HTML5/CSS3 in my project, and this section specifically is for mobile devices. While both facts are not necessarily relevant, the bottom line is that I don't have to support Internet Explorer or even Firefox for that matter (just WebKit). THE PROBLEM With my current CSS approach, the vertical padding of the cell comes from the <span element (set to display: block with top/bottom margins), which contains the "value" of the column. As a result there's no padding when the <span> is empty or missing (no value) and the label is not in place. The "full" coulmns should give you the idea of where I want the labels to be, even if there's no value, and the <span> is not there. I realize that I could use "non-breaking-space", but I would really like to avoid it. I wonder if any of you have a fix / better way to do this? current code is below. • .NET Exception error, what does this error means?

  I've tried to develop a simple winform utility which is using xml file as its database. I've used VS 2008 express edition, C#. When this utility tries to write into the xml file then this error is displayed on other computer. I've tried to provide System.Xml.dll & System.Xml.Linq.dll in the same folder on the other computer but no use. What does it means? Any solution? • Wordpress > Custom wp-archives list by year and category with post count in sidebar

  So I have been trying to add a custom sidebar archives section to this Wordpress Theme. I am trying to get two separate yearly archive sections, one for category A and one for category B. I need to get a post count and display it as well, to the left of "articles". This is the format I have been trying to get in the sidebar: Category 1 2010 - 5 articles 2009 - 4 articles 2008 - 6 articles 2007 - 5 articles Category 2 2010 - 8 articles 2009 - 3 articles 2008 - 7 articles 2007 - 5 articles This code is pulling the yearly archive, but the links to the yearly archives do not filter by category. However, if Category 1 does not have posts in 2008, 2008 would not show. So I feel like I am really close, but there is something wrong here in the code. I have also been unsuccessful in pulling the post count for the year/category either.   I'm testing setting up a Xen DomU with a DRBD storage for easy failover. • Clickonce downloading the deploy files via HTTP and not HTTPS

  I am working on a project to deploy a project via clickonce. The website where these files are housed will only accept HTTPS traffic and if you attempt to connect via HTTP, our siteminder agent will redirect you to a HTTPS login form. We cannot disable the siteminder agent or enable HTTP for security reasons. I see the request to the application’s manifest file is via HTTPS (This is a good thing). But when the clickonce tries to download the testprint.exe.deploy and the other respective files, it is always via HTTP and the siteminder jumps in and redirects the requests which kills the clickonce install with errors. I have tried to specific an absolute codebase reference in the manifest file, but then I start getting entrypoint errors when the manifest is downloaded by the Clickonce installer. Does anyone know how to get all of the deploy files to always download via HTTPS?

• Can't connect to smtp (postfix, dovecot) after making a change and trying to change it back

  I am using postfix and dovecot along with zpanel and I tried enabling SSL and then turned it off as I did not have SSL configured yet and I realized it was a bit stupid at the time.   I configured gwt with spring and spring security that works fine on local development server on google app engine. • Jquery calendar and tab sliding div clash...

  Hey all, i am trying my best to figure out another way around this problem i seem to have encountered. On my website i have a jquery calendar and also a jquery div tab slider (this: http://www.queness.com/resources/html/tabmenu/jquery-tabbed-menu-queness.html). The problem comes into play with the DIV tag. The calender loads up inside a DIV with a id of 'calender'. The CSS for the tabs have the DIV hidden: CSS: .boxBody div {display:none;} .boxBody div.show {display:block;} .boxBody #category a {display:block;} And because of that, the calender never shows on the page. However, if i comment out that css code above, it shows up but does not cover each section as it should.
