  Are you looking for a good free replacement for Microsoft Office, but LibreOffice and OpenOffice are not working out well for you? Then you will definitely want to have a look at Kingsoft Office Suite Free 2012, which you can download as a suite or as individual apps. As soon as the installation has completed you will see this window. All relevant file types are checked by default, but you may deselect any that you do not want associated with Kingsoft Office before clicking Close. Special Note: See further below for additional information about the extra formats (i.e. Office 2007 & 2010) that the suite will open. Here is a quick overall view of what the Writer App window looks like. Each of the three apps in the suite will open with the New Document Pane displayed by default on the right side of the window. A closer view of the upper left corner in Writer, Presentation, and Spreadsheets… A look at the Start Menu options available… In our tests with the suite it opened up Microsoft Office 2007 & 2010 documents without any problems. Note: You can also see part of the built-in Tab Bar outlined in red in the upper left corner. • Windows 7 Starter Screensaver Program Original Files

  Dear Sir or Madam I used the program by Sopan and Javier to change the wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter Edition on my laptop and it worked fine. I have now upgraded to Home Edition but there seems to be remnants of the program still lurking somewhere as when I set photos up for the screensaver they are always stretched no matter what I set the picture position as, ie fill,fit,stretched, tiled or centred. Can Sopan or Javier or anyone else supply original copies please of the files the program modified so that I can over-write the modified files back to the original ones? I know I can re-install the full windows 7 software but I want to save the agony of that along with the re-installation of all my programs and drivers! Many thanks for your help. Mark

  Tough crowd around here it seems.   Let’s get down to the issues. First: spelling…I do not understand how there can be miss-spelled words, as I use spell check (MS Word) and cut and paste my post in to the blog. As to being defensive or complaining. Hmm as I said this is a vent for my frustrations as well letting others know they are not a lone, in Job less land. Warning, warning, warning, complaint coming. I have been out of work for 18 months now. I have gone in person to sites, emailed and phoned places for work (I am thinking of getting a sign with my resume and walking up and down the main drag until, I get a job). So forgive me if I seem a little frustrated in my post. Now one thing some one pointed out really bugs me. The person called me a Holy Roller and made a comment that this is keeping me from a job.  What! I just ordered replacement memory so I can go to 8GB instead of 3GB and now want to see what is available for my CPU. Currently this is what is on my laptop: (in case some of you don't know what comes with this model) Windows 7 Home Pro - 64 Bit AMD M880G Chipset AMD Athlon II Dual Core P320 - 2.1 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache The memory I ordered was Crucial 2 x 4GB DDR3 1333 PC3-10600 I'm sure someone out there can help me, because google hasn't been to friendly with me today.

• Time Machine (OSX) doesn't back up files in Mount Point or Disk Image File

  I found this Q&A (http://superuser.com/questions/148849/backup-mounted-drive-of-an-image-in-time-machine) and this prompted me to ask the following question: I have two disk images which are scripted to be mounted on login. These two disk images are always mounted to the same location. These two disk images are encrypted TrueCrypt volumes. Time Machine (TM) will only back up the disk images the first time they are mounted, but not after that. As I modify documents within the volumes throughout the day, the modified timestamps are adjusted properly. However, TM does not back them up. TM never backs up the mount points which are two folders within my home directory. Any ideas as to why neither the mount point or the image files are backed up? Do the image files have to be closed (unmounted) after being modified for TM to back them up? Thanks, Chris

• /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed with an HP LaserJet p3005

  Ever since 10.04, I can't print to an HP laserjet p3005. I'm even using an entirely different computer now with a fresh install of 10.10. I've tried with and without the latest hplip. Recently, sometimes I can get it to print a few things, but eventually it always fails (usually when printing a pdf from the document viewer (also doesn't work with adobe pdf reader)). Sometimes it fails so bad the printer gives an error saying it needs to be turned off and on again. I can't seem to find a fix anywhere, I've googled all over the past year and tried every fix I could find. It does say that the /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed. It also doesn't make a difference if I create the printer using hp-setup or ubuntu's own printing control panel. I delete and re-create the printer, no difference eventually. I use the default printer settings or custom settings, no difference. I can print perfectly find to a networked printer at home - an HP officejet 6310. It seems to be networked HP printers at work that I can't print to anymore (except occasionally right after re-installing the printer driver). What's the recommended way to install HP printer drivers and reset or clean out everything from before. Or where are the right logs to read or debug commands to do to find out what may be the real cause of the printing problems?

• What Gets Measured Gets Managed

  OK, so if I were to claim credit for inventing that expression, I guess I could share the mantle with Al Gore, creator of the Internet. But here's the point: How many of us acquire CRM systems without specifically benchmarking several key performance indicators across sales, marketing and service BEFORE and AFTER deployment of said system? Yes, this may sound obvious and it might provoke the, "Well of course, Diamond!" response, but is YOUR company doing this? Can you define in quantitative terms the delta across multiple parameters? I just trolled the Web site of one of my favorite sales consultancy firms, The Alexander Group. Right on their home page is a brief appeal citing the importance of benchmarking. The corresponding landing page states, "The fact that hundreds of sales executives now track how their sales forces spend time means they attach great value to understanding how much time sellers actually devote to selling." The opportunity is to extend this conversation to benchmarking the success that companies derive from the investment they make in CRM systems, i.e., to the automation side of the equation. To a certain extent, the 'game' is analogous to achieving optimal physical fitness. One may never quite get there, but beyond the 95% threshold of "excellence," she/he may be entering the realm of splitting infinitives. But at the very start, and to quote verbiage from the aforementioned Alexander Group Web page, what gets measured gets managed. And getting to that 95% level along several key indicators would be a high quality problem indeed, don't you think? Yes, this could be a "That's so 90's" conversation, but is it really?

• nginx and php-fpm - Cannot write PHP error log

  I am using Nginx and PHP-FPM on Linux. I am not sure whether the issue is that PHP is not writing to the location specified in the PHP.ini, or if it just isn't working at all. Some of the logs produced by Nginx and PHP-FPM contain the PHP errors, but they are mixed in with other Nginx log output. When I run phpInfo(), value in the error_log is set to a folder in my home directory, but nothing is ever created. I understand that values in the Nginx conf and PHP-FPM conf can overwrite those set in the PHP.ini, but surely running phpInfo(), would show the final config values? I would like to be able to have 1 folder, with seperate files for the Nginx access and error log as well as PHP errors. Thanks.

• Plugging in USB flash drive only shows error 43, "Unknown device"

  My friend saved by his works onto my flash drive which was detectable/openable, but ... The very next day, the drive wouldn't show up in My Computer and Windows gave him error code 43 (Unknown device). I tried others few systems that once detected his flash drive but the problem still persisted. I don't know whether or not his flash drive is damaged but when plug/un-plugging, there are still sounds coming out though. Tried solutions: On Vista Home Premium (his computer): Uninstalled -- Restarted computer -- Re-installed (ERROR 43) On Windows 7 (my computer): Uninstalled -- Restarted computer -- Can't install (ERROR 43) It seems that my computer (Windows 7) had the lastest drivers already but still can't detect it. Its a Kingston DataTraveller 101 (DT101) 8GB. Could unplugging the flash drive without clicking "Safely Remove Hardware" have caused the problem?

• Convert a Row to a Column in Excel the Easy Way

  Sometimes we’ve entered data in a column in Excel, only to realize later that it would be better to have this data in a row, or vise-versa.  Here’s a simple trick to convert any row or set of rows into a column, or vise-versa, in Excel. Please Note: This is tested in Excel 2003, 2007, and 2010.  Here we took screenshots from Excel 2010 x64, but it works the same on the other versions. Convert a Row to a Column Here’s our data in Excel: We want to change these two columns into rows.  Select all the cells you wish to convert, right-click, and select copy (or simply press Ctrl+C): Now, right-click in the cell where you want to put the data in rows, and select “Paste Special…”   Check the box at the bottom that says “Transpose”, and then click OK. Now your data that was in columns is in rows! This works the exact same for converting rows into columns.  Here’s some data in rows:   After copying and pasting special with Transpose selected, here’s the data in columns! This is a great way to get your data organized just like you want in Excel. • Friday Fun: Omega Crisis

  Friday is here once again and it’s time to play a fun flash game on company time. Today we take a look at the space shooter Omega Crisis. Omega Crisis At the start of the game you’re given the basic story of the game, defending the space outpost, and instructions on how to play. Controls are easy, just target the enemy and use the left mouse button to fire. After each level you’re shown the results and how many Tech Points you’ve earned. The more Tech Points you earn, you have a better chance of upgrading your weapons and base defense before the next level.   You can also go into Manage Mode by hitting the Space bar, and select gunners and other types of weapons to help defend the outpost. Choose your mission from the timeline after successfully completing a mission. You can also use A,W,D,S to move around the map and see exactly where the enemy ships are coming from. This makes it easier to destroy them before they get too close to your base. This game is a lot of fun and is similar to different “Desktop Defense” type games. If you’re looking for a fun way to waste the afternoon, and not look at TPS reports, Omega Crisis can get you though until the whistle blows. • Cannot access Ubuntu 10/04 after reinstalling Windows

  I had Windows Vista Home Premium on HP pavilion desktop. I partitioned the disk for Ubuntu and a swap disk partition and then I installed Ubuntu 10.04. When I would start my computer, I would be given a choice to start Windows or Ubuntu. Today I reinstalled Windows, and now the menu has disappeared. I don't see in windows the disk partition that I allocated to Ubuntu, so it means Ubuntu still exist but I can't load it. What can I do ?

  Developers of Windows Mobile 6.x (and indeed Windows CE) applications still use the rich .NET Compact Framework 3.5 with Visual Studio 2008 for development. That is still a great platform and the Mobile Development Handbook is still a useful resource (if I may say so myself :-). The release of Windows Phone 7, changes the programming paradigm. The programming model has NETCF in its guts, but the developer uses the Silverlight or XNA APIs (and they can call from one into the other). Windows Phone Developer Tools RTW - download the free developer tools (on my machine the installation took 30 minutes, over my existing vanilla Visual Studio 2010 install). • Shorten Emacs timeout of ~/.emacs read

  My ~/.emacs start-up file is stored in my AFS home directory. Often when I login to a linux machine I will forget to renew my AFS credentials before attempting to edit a local (non-AFS) file with Emacs. When this happens Emacs will attempt to load ~./emacs but cannot because it is in AFS space where I do not have access. Eventually (after a minute or so) Emacs will give up trying to load ~./emacs and continue. But waiting for Emacs to timeout is annoying (typing Ctrl-Z does not seem to interrupt this timeout). I want to shorten the amount of time that Emacs waits before giving up. I have tried the suggestion at this site which says to put the following code in the site-start.el file: (with-timeout (4) (load remote-.emacs)) However, when I do that I get the error Error in init file: Symbol's value as variable is void: remote-\.emacs whenever starting Emacs. How can I shorten this timeout?

  Actually - I had a problem with my iPhone. My iphone battery was down & it was switched off. I plugged in it for charging, but after some time - iPhone had a complete white screen. I don't know what actually had happened. Every thing was working perfectly. means suppose I press lock ( button on top-right side ) it sounds that iphone is locked. when I pressed home button & slide on bottom of the screen - it sounds that iphone is unlocked - but the only problem was - screen remains "white" only. someone told me - it needs master reset. • Load Average runaway

  Is there any way to chase down lockups and runaway load averages? Every so often (pretty randomly) I'll get my load average spike up over 5 usually to around 10-15 and sometimes as high as 75 (dual core machine), and cause my system to lock for an indeterminate amount of time. The only thing I can possibly chase it to is using nVidia fakeraid (RAID-1) with JFS on top of that for my /home partition. Also I noticed that when my load averages spike, the power management system doesn't step up my processor speed from 1.6 to its maximum 2.13Ghz clock speed (not sure if this makes a huge difference with this problem). Any ideas?

• Stupid Geek Tricks: Compare Your Browser’s Memory Usage with Google Chrome

  Ever tried to figure out exactly how much memory Google Chrome or Internet Explorer is using? Since they each show up a bunch of times in Task Manager, it’s not so easy! Here’s the quick and easy way to compare them. Both Chrome and IE use multiple processes to isolate tabs from each other, to make sure that one tab doesn’t kill the whole browser. Firefox, on the other hand, just uses a single process for everything. Rather than pulling out a calculator and adding them all up, you can just open up Google Chrome, and type in about:memory into the location bar to see a full list of each browser’s memory usage.   On my test system with 6 GB of system RAM, I’m running the Development channel version of Chrome, and I’ve got about 40 different tabs open, which is why the memory usage is so high. Firefox has 8 tabs open, and IE is enjoying being opened for the first time in forever. Want to help cut down on memory usage and keep your Chrome browser running fast? Disable all unnecessary extensions, and then make sure you disable any plug-ins that you don’t need either.
