• SSD becomes hot, disk failure warning

  I have a two weeks old SSD (Kingston SSDnow 64GB). Yesterday, the computer shutdown twice and after rebooting I was bombarded with disk failure warnings. I usually take such warnings serious (and backed up), but skeptical. After cooling down, the laptop boots again and the only red Smart value was the temperature (Ubuntu did not show the temperature of failure, but the at that time 29°). After refreshing the Smart status and doing a "self test", everything is green. Before contacting Kingston support, I would like to know whether it could be due to a software issue: Is it possible that it is false alarm, and how can I check? I installed Ubuntu 12.04 32bit and took care of alignment. I supposed Ubuntu set up with optimal settings for SSDs, how can I check that there was no mistake? • Failed to download repository information

  When i clicked check this error message came up. But it does not come up when update manager strarts automatically. When you open update manager this error comes up. Any ideas on how to fix it? • Color distortion with Intel HD4000 over HDMI output - VGA is fine

  I set up a new system with i5 3570k gigabyte z77 d3h using integrated graphics (HD4000) and I've installed the 64bit Desktop version of 12.04. Connected to my Acer Screen via HDMI, the colors are horribly distorted. I think the biggest issue is that black appears as greenish. Over VGA everything is fine. Interestingly, I once observed that connecting both, the VGA and the HDMI cable at the same time, solved the issue. Ubuntu thought 2 screens were connected, I mirrored the image, and over HDMI the colors looked fine. However, after a reboot I am now unable to reproduce this behavior. I read frequently, that Intel hardware should be supported out of the box by Ubuntu but it doesn't seem to be the case here. Should I upgrade my Kernel? If so, which version would you recommend? • Running the application with F5 gives a message saying "\bin\Debug\Infrastructure.Layout.dll was not found"

  The problem here is the ProfileCatalog.xml file refers to the old assesmbly namesdlls. It does not get updated when the assembly names change. Steps to fix this issue: 1. Open the ProfileCatalog.xml file in the Shell project, and you'll find there are three ModuleInfo configuration items that need to have the solution name prefixed. 2. • I`ve got some problems with new Acer Aspire S3

  I just got a new Acer Aspire S3 Laptop, and I've installed Ubuntu on it. Here is some problems: 1. Bluetooth (AR3012) can't find any devices. rfkill shows that everything is fine, but I still can't connect to any device. (Maybe it was turned off in stock windows?) 2. Can't change screen brightness (I've tried Timex's solution with new 3.2-rc kernel and some grub options, touchpad works fine,but I still can`t use Fn+Right/Left) 3. 720p video in all players(VLC, mplayer and totem) works wrong. I found some similar problems on intel video chips with vblank sync or something like that. Video plays as it should, but i always see a line which appears on action scenes (looks like some parts of a screen updates faster) Maybe there are some solutions from similar laptops that I can find? PS I've tried ubuntu 11.04 with old kernel and linux mint 12-rc with 3.2-rc2 kernel.

• MacMini (running Ubuntu 14.04) loses wlan connection when uploading larger files (several 100 mb) via ownCloud

  I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on an old MacMini with the intention of running it as a homeserver. Additionally I installed ownCloud and tried to sync some files both from a laptop running elementaryOS and a desktop running windows 7. Syncing smaller files workes like a charm (4000 files at <10mb each) but when it comes to bigger files (1 GB ubuntu iso e.g.) the upload failes after 20-100mb. I can't ping the server anymore and the server can't ping me. It still shows up in our router as connected though. Disconnecting and reconnecting the wlan connection fixes the issue until the next attempt at syncing. • mouse and mousepad not working properly

  Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Samsung Q35 The mouse pad has stopped working, only the buttons work. The external mouse is also behaving very oddly, the mouse pointer works, but the button is not working properly, it has to be pressed many times or held down to select anything, and when anything that I select behaves as though the mouse is being clicked all the screen, settings will keep changing, the page will scroll, sliders will move up and down, tabs will toggle etc, so everything is unusable with the mouse, cannot even use the browser as it keeps scrolling the page up and down. I have tested the mouse on another computer, and it works fine. Please bear in mind that I am also a complete Linux novice, I installed Ubuntu on an old laptop for my kids, that is the limit of my experience.

• Google Site Search (commercial) not indexing files in sitemap

  I have a client for whom we have purchased Google Site Search. It works well for HTML pages served by the CMS, but files aren't being reliably indexed. I wrote a script to generate an XML feed (sitemap) of all the files in the CMS which I've plugged in to Google Webmaster Tools for the site. It says that for that sitemap 923 URLs have been submitted, but only 26 have been indexed. The client relies heavily on searching within files, which is why we decided to use Google search, so this is a bit of a problem. Many of the files aren't linked to from any page on the site, as they are old and therefore don't merit having a page of their own. But they still need to be accessible through search for archiving purposes. The file archive xml can be found at www.sniffer.org.uk/file-archive and the standard xml sitemap (of pages) can be found at www.sniffer.org.uk/sitemap.xml. Any thought would be much appreciated!

• Ubuntu 11.04 windows XP dual boot problem

  I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 direct from installation disk in a separate partition alongside an existing Windows XP installation. Ubuntu operates fine. I can see the old XP file system and the other network computer and access the internet. The problem is when the computer starts I get the boot selection list for Ubuntu or XP; but I am not allowed to select Windows XP (I cannot scroll down the list with tab or arrows keys). This would be fine for me but the computer is used by other people who are only familiar with windows XP at the moment. I have downloaded and run Boot Repair. • Choppy, stuttery & sped-up sound after update

  My audio has always worked perfectly on this hardware and 12.04. Yesterday I received an update, including a kernel update. Today the sound is periodically stuffed. In youtube, mkv files via VLC and embedded audio in web pages (memrise.com) the sound can become stuttery, sped up or stopped mid play-back. Where can I go to find if this is a known problem, or report it if it is not? Also, can I find a log that will tell me what packages were updated on my machine yesterday?

• GRUB install error

  Whenever I try to install Ubuntu, I get a fatal error that reads: 'Executing'grub-install /dev/sda' failed. This is a fatal error.' Its the same as this, but my graphics appear to be running fine. Also, I'm a complete novice at this and really need simple instructions to understand what I'm doing. I've tried booting from a LiveCD and a USB stick. I don't want to dual boot it because its an old computer that I erased XP and plan on only using Linux on it. When I used a USB stick and set the persistent file storage high, I was able to run it, but only as long as the flash drive was plugged in.

• Dell Vostro 1510 trackpad

  A week ago I moved totally from Windows 7 to Ubuntu. I've been really happy with the transition bar one annoying glitch. My trackpad sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. All other hardware including peripherals work flawlessly, including a Logitech ball mouse, Wacom Bamboo pen and touch and wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse combo. I can't see any pattern to when and why the trackpad works. Occasionally on rebooting, it will work, but then I can reboot 10x in a row and it won't work, then I leave it a day, then reboot and it works flawlessly. Any ideas on a solution or appropriate method for me to deb it? My knowledge of Ubuntu/Linux is sketchy at best so I could do with a little help :)

• Is there a limit on the number of threads that can be spawned simultaneously?

  Yesterday I came across this question: How can i call robocopy within a python script to bulk copy multiple folders?, and I though it might be a good exercise for multithreading. I though of spawning as many threads as files needed to be copied, each routine having an exception handling system to prevent the whole copying process from crashing (and log -using mutex on the log file - if there was an error). My question: Is there a limit on the number of thread you can spawn almost simultaneously? If yes, what is the limiting factor? My question is focused on PC desktop, but I welcome any answer on different hardware (embedded systems, calculus clusters, etc.).

• choppy streaming audio

  I could use some help troubleshooting choppy streaming audio. The problem is jerky playback regardless of audio or video with audio. Both Chromium and Firefox have the problem, however files played directly on the machine with Rhythmbox sound just fine. I'm running 12.04 LTS on a C2D T9300. • Is it only possible to display 64k vertices on the monitor with 16bit?

  I did the first 3D tutorial over at riemers.net and stumbled upon that my graphic card only supports Shader 2.0 (Reach profile in XNA) which means I can only use Int16 to store the indices (triangle to vertex). This means that I can only store 2^16 = 65536 vertices. Also I read on the internet that you should prefer 16-bit over 32-bit because not all hardware (like mine) does support 32-bit. Yet, I am wondering: Do really all game scenes get along with only so little vertices? I though already faces of people used a lot of polygons (which are made up of vertices?). It’s not relevant for me yet, but I am interested: Do game scenes use only 65536 vertices? Do you use some trade-off to display more (e.g. 64k in GPU buffer rest on RAM) Is there some method to get more into the GPU buffer? I already read on some other posts that there seems to be a limit of 64k per mesh too, so maybe you can compact stuff to meshes?

• CS4326/7 sound chipset on Thinkpad 600E

  OK, I know this has been a problem for a while, and I know by now this really old Pentium II laptop is really really really obsolete. However, I have installed Lubuntu 10.10 on this laptop and things seem to work fine except the sound. Now I've read and gone through a bunch of tutorials and guides to working around this, none of which have worked. I have gone through this Ubuntu bug report and that doesn't work either. The problem I think is that the latest workaround is (understandably) about two Ubuntu versions behind. Now I'm not sure what has changed since then to make that workaround not work, but I would appreciate any help. Thanks

• Independent sound device for headphones

  I have an Asus K52Jc and in sound configuration there is no independent sound device for the headphones, and so there's no way to have independent volume for speakers and headphones. Is there a way to have independent devices? • Gnome 3 freezes when switching workspaces

  I have found an odd problem with Gnome 3 on Ubuntu recently. Under certain circumstances, when switching between two workspaces the whole desktop and user interface will 'freeze' for anything up to 2 minutes; during this time I cannot click anything or interact using the keyboard. Often, the screen will show a 'half-completed' animation of the workspace swapper. This is on Ubuntu 12.04.1 running on a 2-year old Macbook Pro, and it only seems to occur when using an external monitor. This does not seem to be a processor or memory issue, and does not occur every time I switch workspaces. Is this a known problem? What can I do in the short or long term to fix it?

• Cost of Web Server that hosted and delivered text only

  We are developing an application that needs a web server to interact with the two (or more) entities involved. They will not ever see anything on the web, but the server is required for the transfer of data between them. It's sort of a holding point. Now, the only thing the server is going to be holding is textual data. The two entities are going to be doing the work with the data. I was wondering what the cost of this type of server would be. Since it would be JUST a database with no front end, would it make sense to employ a service through Amazon or Google that just holds data for me to access instead of buying a server and making my own database? The amount of data can grow very large however it's only text, and all data over a day old will be deleted for the most part every day. Thanks!
