• Original sender is not correctly identified when spam is forwarded

  I have a forwarding rule with Postfix that forwards all messages to my main email address. When a spam message is sent to one of my emails, it is forwarded but the sender is shown as being the forwarding domain, not the spammer's domain. Real example: mywebsite.com is hosted on Linode. [email protected] sends an email to info@mywebsite.com the mail is forwarded to myemail@anotherwebsite.com my email hosting (anotherwebsite.com) sees it's spam and sends a message to abuse@linode.com and Linode reports a TOS violation. I have modified my postfix settings so I now use RBL, but if a message goes through, it may happen again. How can I prevent this to happen again? Is there some settings to change on Postfix so the original sender is correctly identified? Thanks Stephan EDIT: The steps I did to prevent this to happen again are: Add RBL checking to Postfix Add postgrey to Postfix And finally fix the MX record which was incorrect. I checked with a test email on Spamcop.net and the original sender is correctly identified.

• Google Analytics Goal Tracking for Sub-Domains?

  I am trying to track goals in Google Analytics for a website that has the goal URL on a sub-domain. The main domain for example is: domain.com and the sub-domain is my.domain.com. I have Google Analytics configured to track domains and all sub-domains and I've eve set up an advanced filter so I can see traffic to my sub-domains in Analytics. However, in goal tracking, you're supposed to put in the website URL after the front (so if it were domain.com/conversions/ you'd put in just /conversions/). However, since for me it would be my.domain.com/conversions/, how would I input that URL into Analytics to track? Would Analytics automatically determine the URL to be on the sub-domain? Thanks!

  I have a web site who's home page is at http://domain.com when a new user first hits the web site I'm creating a unique id of 5 chars for them (for example 'abcde' and redirecting them to http://domain.com/abcde so they can later bookmark and return to their workspace. My question is what's the best approach for SEO purposes, I need the main url domain.com to be indexed but google will also get the redirect and will not index the main page. I know about canonical urls, but this applies only when the domain.com url does not redirect also should I use 301 or 302 code in the redirect ?

• Discover What Powers Your Favorite Websites

  Have you ever wondered if the site you’re visiting is powered by WordPress or if the webapp you’re using is powered by Ruby on Rails?  With these extensions for Google Chrome, you’ll never have to wonder again. Geeks love digging under the hood to see what makes their favorite apps and sites tick.  But opening the “View Source” window today doesn’t tell you everything there is to know about a website.  Plus, even if you can tell what CMS is powering a website from its source, it can be tedious to dig through lines of code to find what you’re looking for.  Also, the HTML code never tells you what web server a site is running on or what version of PHP it’s using.  With three extensions for Google Chrome you’ll never have to wonder again.  Note that some sites may not give as much information, but still, you’ll find enough data from most sites to be interesting. Discover Web Frameworks and Javascript Libraries with Chrome Sniffer If you want to know what CMS is powering a site or if it’s using Google Analytics or Quantcast, this is the extension for you.  Chrome Sniffer (link below) identifies over 40 different frameworks, and is constantly adding more.  It shows the logo of the main framework on the site on the left of your address bar.  Here wee see Chrome Sniffer noticed that How-To Geek is powered by WordPress.   Click the logo to see other frameworks on the site.  We can see that the site also has Google Analytics and Quantcast.  If you want more information about the framework, click on its logo and the framework’s homepage will open in a new tab. As another example, we can see that the Tumblr Staff blog is powered by Tumblr (of course), the Discus comment system, Quantcast, and the Prototype JavaScript framework. Or here’s a site that’s powered by Drupal, Google Analytics, Mollom spam protection, and jQuery.  Chrome Sniffer definitely uncovers a lot of neat stuff, so if you’re into web frameworks you’re sure to enjoy this extension. Find Out What Web Server The Site is Running On Want to know whether the site you’re looking at is running on IIS or Appache?  The Web Server Notifier extension for Chrome (link below) lets you easily recognize the web server a site is running on by its favicon on the right of the address bar.  Click the icon to see more information. Some web servers will show you a lot of information about their server, including version, operating system, PHP version, OpenSSL version, and more. Others will simply tell you their name. If the site is powered by IIS, you can usually tell the version of Windows Server its running on since the IIS versions are specific to a version of Windows.  Here we see that Microsoft.com is running on the latest and greatest – Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5. Discover Web Technologies Powering Sites Wondering if a webapp is powered by Ruby on Rails or ASP.NET?  The Web Technology Notifier extension for Chrome (link below), from the same developer as the Web Server Notifier, will let you easily discover the backend of a site.  You’ll see the technology’s favicon on the right of your address bar, and, as with the other extension, can get more information by clicking the icon. Here we can see that Backpack from 37signals is powered by the Phusion Passenger module to run Ruby on Rails.   Microsoft’s new Docs.com Office Online apps is powered by ASP.NET…   And How-To Geek has PHP running to power WordPress. • Setting up Oracle Linux 6 with public-yum for all updates

  I just wanted to give you a quick example on how to get started with Oracle Linux 6 and start using the updates we published on http://public-yum.oracle.com. Download Oracle Linux (without the requirement of a support subscription) from http://edelivery.oracle.com/linux. Install Oracle Linux from the ISO or DVD image Log in as user root Download the yum repo file from http://public-yum.oracle.com # cd /etc/yum.repos.d # wget http://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum-ol6.repo If you want, you can edit the repo file and enable other repositories, I enabled [ol6_UEK_latest] by just setting enabled=1 in the file with a text editor. Run yum repolist to show the registered channels and you see we are including everything including the latest published RPMs. Now you can just run yum update and any time we release new security errata or bugfix errata for OL6, they will be posted and you will automatically get them. It's very easy, very convenient and actually very cool. We do a lot more than just build OL RPMs and distribute them, we have a very comprehensive test farm where we test the packages extensively.

• Proper way to create and work with a subdomain?

  My site got effected by Panda, and I am trying to see if making a subdomain would work. The site is comehike.com, and I created a subdomain which is currently empty at hiking.comehike.com I have a directory /outdoors that has some high quality hand-written articles. I want to put those into the new subdomain to see what would happen. My questions are: Should I just copy and paste the files for those pages into the new subdomain's folder, and just change all the links in all my pages from the original domain to the new subdomain? Should I just do a 301 redirect to the new subdomain? Since test.site.com and www.site.com are different domains, will the new page have to start from scratch in terms of Pagerank, and its rankings in the SERPs?

• Geotargeted subfolder questions (Portugal/Brazil and Switzerland)

  We are at the beginning of the process to get multilingual versions of a website. We will be using subfolders working off the core domain (eg mydomain.com/fr/), set the geotargeting at webmaster tools and set hreflang attribute. I would really appreciate your help with a couple of questions. 1/Portuguese: we will have a Portuguese language version of the site. Our intention is to use this to cover users in both Portugal AND Brazil. ie, we are not going to do separate folders mydomain.com/pt/ and mydomain.com/br/ Can I use 2 hreflang attributes for this language version to tell Google it covers Brazil AND Portugal? What country code to use for this subfolder? 2/Switzerland Does anyone have best practice advice how to do this? One one hand, the subfolder should be mydomain.com/ch/ but as Switzerland covers 2 language possibilities (French AND German) - what to do? thanks

• Security Alert For CVE-2010-4476 Released

  Hello, this is Eric Maurice again. Oracle just released a Security Alert with a fix for the vulnerability CVE-2010-4476, which affects Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. This vulnerability is present in Java running on servers as well as standalone Java desktop applications. Its successful exploitation by a malicious attacker can result in a complete denial of service for the affected servers. While only recently publicly disclosed, a number of Internet sites have since then reproduced details about this vulnerability, including exploit codes, which may result in allowing a malicious attacker to create a denial of service condition against the targeted system. Oracle therefore strongly recommends that affected organizations apply this fix as soon as possible. Please note that a fix for this vulnerability will also be included in the upcoming Java Critical Patch Update (Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011), which will be released on February 15th 2011. Note that the impact of this vulnerability on desktops is minimal: the affected applications or applets running in Internet browsers for example, might stop responding and may need to be restarted; however the desktop itself will not be compromised (i.e. no compromise at the desktop OS level). Oracle therefore recommends that consumers use the Java auto-update mechanism to get this fix. This will prompt them to install the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment 6 update 24 or higher (JRE), which includes the fix for this vulnerability. JRE 6 update 24 will also be distributed with the Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011.   I'm having a bad .htaccess day! I want a user to be able to type the URL mysite.com/about instead of mysite.com/about.html On .htaccess file I have: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ /$1.html [NC,L] But this simply does not work? I will add though that if i try this further inside the site e.g. mysite.com/pages/contact Works perfectly whether I have the above code in the .htaccess or not What am I doing wrong?

  In my setup there exist user1, ..., userN@example.com. Mail for example.com is handled by Exchange 2010 and all the users user Outlook 2010. There also exists a Standard Distribution list named office@example.com. Is it possible to have some of the users being able to send email with office@example.com as the sender address? Can the sender's GECOS be different too when this happens so that the recipient sees "Offices of Example.com" instead of "User Name X"? Sometimes the secretaries need to send stuff as "the office" and not as theirselves ...
