  • A little bit of Ajax goes a long way

    - by Holland
    ..except when you're having problems. My problem is this: I have a hierarchical list of categories stored in a database which I wish to output in a dropdown list. The hierarchy comes into place when the subcategories are to be displayed, which are dependent on a parent id (which equals out to the first seven or so main categories listed). My thoughts are relatively simple: when the user clicks the dynamically allocated list of main categories, they are clicking on an option tag. For each option tag, an id (i.e., the parent) is listed in the value attribute, as well as an argument which is sent to a Javascript function which then uses AJAX to get the data via PHP and sends it to my 'javascript.php' file. The file then does magic, and populates the subcategory list, which is dependent on the main category selected. I believe I have the idea down, it's just that I'm implementing the solution improperly, for some reason. Here's what I have so far: from javascript.php <script type="text/javascript" src=<?=JPATH_BASE.DS.'includes'.DS.'jquery.js';?>> var ajax = { ajax.sendAjaxData = function(method, url, dataTitle, ajaxData) { $.ajax({ type: 'post', url: "C:/wamp/www/patention/components/com_adsmanagar/views/edit/tmpl/javascript.php", data: { 'data' : ajaxData }, success: function(result){ // we have the response alert("Your request was successful." + result); }, error: function(e){ alert('Error: ' + e); } }); } ajax.printSubCategoriesOnClick = function(parent) { alert("hello world!"); ajax.sendAjaxData('post', 'javascript.php', 'data' parent); <?php $categories = $this->formData->getCategories($_POST['data']); ?> ajax.printSubCategories(<?=$categories;?>); } ajax.printSubCategories = function(categories) { var select = document.getElementById("subcategories"); for (var i = 0; i < categories.length; i++) { var opt = document.createElement("option"); opt.text = categories['name']; opt.value = categories['id']; } } } </script> the function used to populate the form data function populateCategories($parent, FormData $formData) { $categories = $formData->getCategories($parent); echo "<pre>"; print_r($categories); echo "</pre>"; foreach($categories as $section => $row){ ?> <option value=<?=$row['id'];?> onclick="ajax.printSubCategoriesOnClick(<?=$row['id']?>)"> <? echo $row['name']; ?> </option> <?php } } The problem is that when I try to do a print_r on my $_POST variable, nothing shows up. I also receive an "undefined index" error (which refers to the key I set for the data type). I'm thinking that for some reason, the data is being sent to my form.php file, or my default.php file which includes both the form.php and javascript.php files via a function. Is there something specific that I'm missing here? Just looking up basic AJAX syntax (via jQuery) hasn't helped out, unfortunately.

  • Check box and text box for Other value

    - by Svish
    When I have a set of either check boxes or radio buttons I often need to have an Other choice. This check box or radio button is very often accompanied by a text box where the user is supposed to fill out what this Other is. How do you usually handle this set up? What kind of markup do you use? What do you require in your validation? Do you use java script for anything? For example: How do you make the form accessible? Do you use and how do you use the label tag, for example. Do you connect the check box and text box in any way with some javascript? For example, do you activate the text box when the check box is checked? Do you check or uncheck the check box automatically if the text box is filled out or cleared? Do you let validation fail with error messages if the check box is checked but the text box is not filled out, or if the text box is filled out but the check box is not checked? Or do you just consider it not filled out and not checked? Very unsure how to best deal with this issue, so any advice and examples are most welcome c",)

  • Quick question regarding CSS sprites and memory usage

    - by Andy E
    Well, it's more to do with images and memory in general. If I use the same image multiple times on a page, will each image be consolidated in memory? Or will each image use a seperate amount of memory? I'm concerned about this because I'm building a skinning system for a Windows Desktop Gadget, and I'm looking at spriting the images in the default skin so that I can keep the file system looking clean. At the same time I want to try and keep the memory footprint to a minimum. If I end up with a single file containing 100 images and re-use that image 100 times across the gadget I don't want to have performance issues. Cheers.

  • Disable input fields based on selection from drop down

    - by Thomas
    I have a drop down box and some text input fields below it. Based on which item from the drop down menu the user selects, I would like to disable some of the fields. I think I am failing to target the input fields correctly but I can't figure out what the problem is: Here is the script I have gotten so far: $(document).ready(function(){ var customfield = $('#customfields-tf-19-tf'); var customfield1 = $('#customfields-tf-20-tf'); var customfield2 = $('#customfields-tf-13-tf'); $(function() { var call_table = { 'Condominium': function() { customfield.attr("disabled"); }, 'Co-Op': function() { customfield1.attr("disabled"); }, 'Condop': function() { customfield2.attr("disabled"); } }; $('#customfields-s-18-s').change(function() { call_table[this.value](); }); }); }); And the layout for my form: <td width="260" class="left"> <label for="customfields-s-18-s">Ownership (Required):</label> </td> <td class="right"> <select name="customfields-s-18-s" class="dropdown" id="customfields-s-18-s" size="" > <option value="Condominium"> Condominium</option> <option value="Co-Op"> Co-Op</option> <option value="Condop"> Condop</option> </select> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="260" class="left"> <label for="customfields-tf-19-tf">Maintenance:</label> </td> <td class="right"> <input type="text" title="Maintenance" class="textInput" name="customfields-tf-19-tf" id="customfields-tf-19-tf" size="40"/> </td> </tr> <tr id="newsletter_topics"> <td width="260" class="left"> <label for="customfields-tf-20-tf">Taxes:</label> </td> <td class="right"> <input type="text" title="Taxes" class="textInput" name="customfields-tf-20-tf" id="customfields-tf-20-tf" size="40" /> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="260" class="left"> <label for="customfields-tf-13-tf" class="required">Tax Deductibility:</label> </td> <td class="right"> <input type="text" title="Tax Deductibility" class="textInput" name="customfields-tf-13-tf" id="customfields-tf-13-tf" size="40" /> </td> </tr>

  • Make an h2 tag unremovable in a contenteditable section

    - by Travis
    is it possible to make a section within a contenteditable element permanent, so that a user cannot remove it? I have an h2 tag in a contentEditable div. I don't want the user to edit the h2 tag, so I set contentEditable=false, but the user can still select and remove it, which I want to disallow. So, for ex: <div contentEditable="true"> <h2 contentEditable="false">My h2 tag</h2> This is a div you can edit. But you can't edit or remove the h2 tag. </div>

  • how to visualise/debug an imagemap?

    - by fearofawhackplanet
    I'm dynamically generating an imagemap for a chart tool I have. I was hoping to be able to set a border or color on the area tags so I could check everything was being generated with the right coords, but a little research shows this is not possible. So whats the easiest way to check my image map is correct? Are there any browser tools which will "visualise" the areas?

  • What are unusual and creative usages of html5 canvas

    - by stej
    Canvas from html5 was introduced some time ago. Currently it's used (almost) only for demonstrations how cool it is - it's mainly related to painting, games and charts. Many of them can be found at Canvas demos. How creatively / unusually can canvas be used? Some examples: jsAscii - ASCII art from images with Javascript and Canvas (yea, I know, it's painting but not the classic one) Javascript compression using PNG and Canvas

  • Adsense in a ajax based application?

    - by prashant_sp
    How do I add adsense or other ads in a asp.net ajax/ajax based application ? (ex. ra-ajax samples page) or GWT Is creating an iframe a viable solution? As stated below, placing adsense script is easy. But the google bot wont be able to scan my ajax based page, as all of the content is javascript. There wont be contextual ads. So wont be able to monetize. It would be great for static ads. Any idea/inputs?

  • input type text and onKeyDown not working under IE

    - by dygi
    Hi there. I am writing a WWW application, it has to run under IE. I have the problem with the code that runs under FF, but i can't get it running under IE. // JS code function test() { if (window.event.keyCpde == 13) window.location.href.ssign("myPage.php"); } I've tried some similar ways around window.location and location.href, also document.location. I've read that IE has problems with that, so i ask for a solution. The goal is, that page reloads after typing in some text into <input type='text' name='item_code' onKeyDown='test()'> and click enter. So the result is similar to pressing submit type button below the text input. Within IE it reloads the same page and nothing happens. In FF it correctly works.

  • jQuery Datatables and ColumnFilterWidget integration issue

    - by user3520135
    I am trying to Place the ColumnFilterWidget plugin in the Header of the Datatables Table. Here are the changes i made in it : /** * Menu-based filter widgets based on distinct column values for a table. * * @class ColumnFilterWidgets * @constructor * @param {object} oDataTableSettings Settings for the target table. */ var ColumnFilterWidgets = function( oDataTableSettings ) { var me = this; var sExcludeList = ''; // me.$WidgetContainer = $( '<div class="column-filter-widgets"></div>' ); me.$WidgetContainer = $( '<tr class="head"></tr>' ); me.$MenuContainer = me.$WidgetContainer; me.$TermContainer = null; me.aoWidgets = []; me.sSeparator = ''; if ( 'oColumnFilterWidgets' in oDataTableSettings.oInit ) { if ( 'aiExclude' in oDataTableSettings.oInit.oColumnFilterWidgets ) { sExcludeList = '|' + oDataTableSettings.oInit.oColumnFilterWidgets.aiExclude.join( '|' ) + '|'; } if ( 'bGroupTerms' in oDataTableSettings.oInit.oColumnFilterWidgets && oDataTableSettings.oInit.oColumnFilterWidgets.bGroupTerms ) { me.$MenuContainer = $( '<div class="column-filter-widget-menus"></div>' ); me.$TermContainer = $( '<div class="column-filter-widget-selected-terms"></div>' ).hide(); } } // Add a widget for each visible and filtered column $.each( oDataTableSettings.aoColumns, function ( i, oColumn ) { var $columnTh = $( oColumn.nTh ); var $WidgetElem = $( '<th><div class="column-filter-widget"></div></th>' ); if ( oColumn.bVisible && sExcludeList.indexOf( '|' + i + '|' ) < 0 ) { me.aoWidgets.push( new ColumnFilterWidget( $WidgetElem, oDataTableSettings, i, me ) ); } me.$MenuContainer.append( $WidgetElem ); } ); if ( me.$TermContainer ) { me.$WidgetContainer.append( me.$MenuContainer ); me.$WidgetContainer.append( me.$TermContainer ); } oDataTableSettings.aoDrawCallback.push( { name: 'ColumnFilterWidgets', fn: function() { $.each( me.aoWidgets, function( i, oWidget ) { oWidget.fnDraw(); } ); } } ); return me; }; I added a extra <tr class='head'> inside the Datatable, and later on i am trying to append the Filters to that with attached to them,But instead of that it is creating new TR tag and then appending the filters in it. I even changed my dom of data tables to : dom: '<"clear">Cf<"clear">ltWrip', So the table elements should be there so that it can insert filters inside the head.

  • Customizing the Superfish drop-down menu

    - by Pieter
    I've been tinkering around with the excellent Superfish drop-down menu to fit my needs. Here's the result. Still, there are two oddities I need to fix. Since I changed the font family and font size used for the items in the menu bar, the drop-down menus are aligned incorrectly a few pixels lower than where they should be. Secondly, when I hover over a menu item that has a submenu, an arrow to the right is displayed but it's not as visible as it should be due to the light background color. Can I change this quickly without making a new arrow image?
