  • Automatically restore windows network drive (red "X") via batch file

    i need check if a network drive is mapped and accessible. From time to time windows displays a red X on the drive, and i would need to manually click the drive in explorer to reconnect. I already found solutions which involve editing the registry which unfortunately isn´t possible. So i would need a batch file checking for connection, and (re-)mounting the drive. What i´m using at the moment: IF NOT EXIST z: net use z: \\10.211.55.5\test

  • Networking is broken in my VMware 10.0 VMs after upgrading to Windows 8.1

    I have a VMware Workstation 10.0 installation with several virtual networks including the default host-only and NAT networks. After upgrading to Windows 8.1, the NAT network was not working. I booted an Ubuntu VM with the default network setup that was previously working, and it sat for a long time during startup saying it was waiting for the network. After it finally started up, an ifconfig showed no IP address for eth0. How can I fix the broken network?

    RE: Putting this out there in case someone else runs into this issue. The intel chipset is on-board. I discovered the reason for the crappy resolution in windows 7 was that the memory to share with the video card was set to 1MB in the BIOS.   • windows weekday and day of month don't match - calendar fail

    This computer came to my shop for just a simple Windows tuneup, so after doing all my tweaks, I noticed I was getting an error when trying to synchronize with the time server. It wasn't until I was about to give up that I noticed in the calendar that it's one weekday late. Here's a screenshot. As you can see, the day today, Friday - January 7th is a Thursday in the calendar. How is this possible?

  • Some Windows XP users can't open any programs

    On my Windows XP PC several user accounts have been created (five to be exact), of these one has all the built-in programs disabled. When I click to open any of these programs it searches to find the program. This is bizarre because all the other users can open these programs just fine. Thinking that the user account is corrupted I created a new user and this new account has the same problem. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

    I've made a script that will set an environment variable to the path in the current Explorer windows when its hotkey is pressed. However, I want this to only trigger if the active window is an Explorer window.   • How to move windows that open up offscreen?

    I have a dual monitor setup, and I recently played around with the positioning settings, and some of my single window applications do the favour of preserving where they were last closed, and opening in the same position later. Unfortuanately, that now places them out of the viewable area of my screens! Is there some way to force a particular window into the viewable area? If it matters at all, this is on Windows XP 32b.

    Hi, I'm looking for a command line tool for windows that will go over a directory tree (recursively) and output a list of all the files in there, and a checksum for each file (can be CRC, MD5, whatever). Esentially, what I want is to compare 2 big directory trees in 2 machines. I'm planning to take the outputs of running this tool in both, and diffing them to make sure they're identical. I appreciate any ideas.

  • Windows 7 F6 Drivers off a USB Drive

    I'm doing a fresh install of Windows 7 and I have an on board software RAID. I "need" to install the drivers via the infamous F6 process. Technically, it should be possible to do so after the OS has been booted, but long story short, this isn't going to work well for me. Is it possible to install F6 drivers during the installation using a USB, or must that always be done using floppies? What are my alternatives?

  • Making the popup toolbar menus on Windows XP's taskbar stay put during editing

    Hello, I'm looking for a way to make the popup toolbar menus on Windows XP's taskbar stay in place while you edit it, and only close when you tell it to--by clicking outside it, for example. Right now it disappears after each editing action--such as renaming a file or changing its position on the menu, and you have to click the again to pop the menu back up to do more editing.   • Icons in windows 8 changed automatically

    The icons of my folders in Windows 8 have changed automatically ! Now it is similar to that of the Unknown File Type icon. My C: drive icon and some icons in the Explorer-Home menu had also changed, but they became normal after a restart. But the folder icons (Medium Size) don't change.   • Vmware Player network adapters have no network or internet access in Windows 7 enterprise

    As per the title. My VMWare player installation has setup the two network adaptor VMnet1 and VMnet8 and they are picked up as unidentified networks with no network access (i need this to activate my windows server installation on it). The option to change the network location is not available (this might be because of network policy on the domain despite having set this as configurable in the local security policy section). Is there anyway i can change how these networks are detected or alter the configuration of vmware to get around this?
