  • Constructors + Dependency Injection

    - by Sunny
If I am writing up a class with more than 1 constructor parameter like: class A{ public A(Dependency1 d1, Dependency2 d2, ...){} } I usually create a "argument holder"-type of class like: class AArgs{ public Dependency1 d1 { get; private set; } public Dependency2 d2 { get; private set; } ... } and then: class A{ public A(AArgs args){} } Typically, using a DI-container I can configure the constructor for dependencies & resolve them & so there is minimum impact when the constructors need to change. Is this considered an anti-pattern and/or any arguments against doing this?

  • SVN user guidelines

    - by Oliver Moran
I have been tasked with writing a set of user guidelines for SVN for developers in my company. The guidelines are to be solely from a user perspective (e.g. commit comments, when to commit) and not from an administrative perspective (e.g. when to tag, how to structure). An administrative guideline will be written in a separate document. We are an app development house involved also in embedded development. So our developers range from HTML5 and Flash to Java and C. Some of our coding involves forking very large (millions of files) code bases. Other parts involve us engaging in ground-up development. Are there any best practices for use of SVN from a user (i.e. grunt developer) perspective?

  • how to not use relative links in html, but everytime starting from the domain.

    - by Andy
Hi, I'm trying to make a page for use with wordpress and it's almost working, The page I want to use is an HTML page with designated space for it within certain DIVs. I'm encountering the problem of wordpress using the wrong links to kind of everything. I will probably have to change every link to http://www.mydomain.com/sub/folder/image.jpg while there are many links. the page is positioned in a subfolder, there where wordpress is installed on the server. But other pages are positioned in the root, and retrieve all other files directly starting from the domain so writing /sub/folder/image.jpg is enough. Is there a way I could get this to work with html/php files in sub folders as well (so when typing a link like /sub/folder/image.jpg they retrieve http://www.mydomain.com/sub/folder/image.jpg and not http://www.mydomain.com/sub/folder/sub/folder/image.jpg thanks!

  • How do you get 100% code coverage with guards in Haskell?

    - by dan_waterworth
I'm trying to get (and prove) 100% test coverage for some code I'm writing in Haskell using HPC. However if I write something like this: fac n | n > 0 = n * (fac (n - 1)) | otherwise = 1 Then the second expression of the guard statement has always True tagged to it. What is the easiest way to overcome this in the general case? edit: Just to clarify. This code: fac n = if n > 0 then n * (fac (n - 1)) else 1 Works fine with HPC, (running it gives 100% code coverage). I'm basically suffering from this problem: http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/3175

  • Ruby Hash.merge with specified keys only

    - by ba
I'm pretty sure I saw on a Rails related site something along the lines of: def my_function(*opts) opts.require_keys(:first, :second, :third) end And if one of the keys in require_keys weren't specified, or if there were keys that weren't specified, an exception was raised. I've been looking through ActiveSupport and I guess I might be looking for something like the inverse of except. I like to try and use as much of the framework as possible compared to writing my own code, that's the reason I'm asking when I know how to make the same functionality on my own. :) At the moment I'm doing it through the normal merge routine and making sure that I have what I need with some IFs.

  • Increase a recive buffer in UDP socket

    - by unresolved_external
I'wm writing an app, which transmits video and obviously uses UDP protocol fot this purpose. So I am wondering how can I increase a size of send/recieve buffer, cause currently the maximal size of data, which I can send is 65000 bytes. I already tried to do it in following way: int option = 262144; if(setsockopt(m_SocketHandle,SOL_SOCKET,SO_RCVBUF ,(char*)&option, sizeof(option)) < 0) { printf("setsockopt failed\n"); } But it did not work. So how can I do it?

  • travesersing the dom with inexact parameters

    - by rashcroft23
Hi, I want to grab the image src on a product page in a e commerce website. I'm writing this as a bookmarklet, so I'd like the code to work universally as possible. I've noticed that there are only two reoccurring factors in the product image tag among top e-commerce websites (amazon, bestbuy ect.): border=0 and 180<width&height<400. So how could I write a selector that would give me the srcof the first img element on the page with no border and width & height between 180 and 400 px? Or is there a better way of doing this? P.S. since I'm trying to keep the bookmarklet as light as possible, I don't want to use any libraries (jquery, yui etc)

  • Structure question over Local/Remote Services, Broadcast Receivers, and Intent Services

    - by Ryan
I'm writing an android app that has a standard activity, but also needs to monitor incoming/outgoing calls and texts at all times. In addition, the app needs to notify users of information once a day without having the activity open. The information it notifies users of is stored in a database, so communication with the activity is not necessary. I've been researching for a week and still can't decide how to go about doing this. My instinct tells me I need a remote service that has a constantly running broadcast receiver, but every remote service example I see is overly complicated. Could anyone help me better understand what steps I need to take? Thanks in advance.

  • CI controller function is ignored

    - by den-javamaniac
Hi. I'm trying to pass through a CI tutorial (writing a simple forum) and I can't make a controller function called. To be more specific I have this in a controller: function __construct() { parent::Controller(); $this->load->helper('url'); } function index() { $data['title'] = "Wlcome to Gossip"; $data['heading'] = "Welcome to Gossip"; $data['query'] = $this->db->get('topic')->result(); $this->load->view('welcome', $data); } function topic() { echo 'testing...'; } and when I'm trying to access the /index.php/forum/topic/ uri it just prints out my index() function. Can any one point out what may cause the problem?

  • Why can't i call Contains method from my array?

    - by xbnevan
    Arrrg!I am running into what i feel is a dumb issue with a simple script i'm writing in powershell. I am invoking a sql command that is calling a stored proc, with the results i put it a array. The results look something like this: Status ProcessStartTime ProcessEndTime ------ ---------------- -------------- Expired May 22 2010 8:31PM May 22 2010 8:32PM What i'm trying to do is if($s.Contains("Expired")) , report failed. Simple...? :( Problem i'm running into is it looks like Contains method is not being loaded as i get an error like this: Method invocation failed because [System.Object[]] doesn't contain a method named 'Contains'. At line:1 char:12 + $s.Contains <<<< ("Expired") + CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (Contains:String) [], RuntimeException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : MethodNotFound So, what can i do to stop powershell from unrolling it to string? Actual ps script below - $s = @(Invoke-Sqlcmd -Query "USE DB GO exec Monitor_TEST_ps 'EXPORT_RUN',NULL,20 " ` -ServerInstance "testdb002\testdb_002") if ($s.Contains("Expired")) { Write-Host "Expired found, FAIL." } else { Write-Host "Not found, OK." }

  • What to use to write tests? [Rails]

    - by yuval
I asked a question about different testing frameworks yesterday. This question can be found here. Now that I have a better understanding of the different frameworks, I have a very simple question: With a basic understanding, but very limited experience with writing tests with rails' built in testing framework (basic assertions), would it be okay for me to jump directly to testing with RSpec, Webrat, and Cucamber? Thank you! As a side note: yes, this is an opinion based question, but I feel that the input received to this question is valuable enough to the community to keep this question open. Thanks.

  • How to track when my application has unexpectedly shut down?

    - by Vilx-
I'm writing an application whose purpose involves a lot of logging of different events. Among those I would also like to have an event that the application was shut down - even if unexpectedly like because of a power loss. Naturally, when the power goes out I don't get a chance to write anything anywhere. So my idea was to continuously write a timestamp in some known location (say, once per minute), and when the application was next run, it could determine the approximate time of the unexpected shutdown. A precision of 1 minute would be acceptable for me. However I'm worried that caching at the OS and disk level might interfere with this approach. Is there a better way or if not - how to make sure that the data I just wrote is REALLY written out to the physical medium? Added: Oh, almost forgot the buzzword line: Windows XP and above; .NET 3.5; C#.

  • Silently binding a variable instance to a class in C++?

    - by gct
So I've got a plugin-based system I'm writing. Users can create a child class of a Plugin class and then it will be loaded at runtime and integrated with the rest of the system. When a Plugin is run from the system, it's run in the context of a group of plugins, which I call a Session. My problem is that inside the user plugins, two streaming classes called pf_ostream and pf_istream can be used to read/write data to the system. I'd like to bind the plugin instance's session variable to pf_ostream and pf_istream somehow so that when the user instantiates those classes, it's already bound to the session for them (basically I don't want them to see the session internals) I could just do this with a macro, wrapping a call to the constructor like: #define MAKE_OSTREAM = pf_ostream_int(this->session) But I thought there might be a better way. I looked at using a nested class inside Plugin wrapping pf_ostream but it appears nested classes don't get access to the enclosing classes variables in a closure sort of way. Does anyone know of a neat way to do this?

  • What does "Only catch exceptions you can handle" really mean?

    - by KyleLib
I'm tasked with writing an Exception Handling Strategy and Guidelines document for a .NET/C# project I'm working on. I'm having a tough go at it. There's plenty of information available for how/when to throw, catch, wrap exceptions, but I'm looking for describing what sorts of things should go on inside the catch block short of wrapping and throwing the exception. try { DoSomethingNotNice(); } catch (ExceptionICanHandle ex) { //Looking for examples of what people are doing in catch blocks //other than throw or wrapping the exception, and throwing. } Thanks in advance

  • Why is the GUID structure declared the way it is?

    - by alabamasucks
In rpc.h, the GUID structure is declared as follows: typedef struct _GUID { DWORD Data1; WORD Data2; WORD Data3; BYTE Data[8]; } GUID; I understand Data1, Data2, and Data3. They define the first, second, and third sets of hex digits when writing out a GUID (XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXX). What I never understood was why the last 2 groups were declared together in the same byte array. Wouldn't this have made more sense (and been easier to code against)? typedef struct _GUID { DWORD Data1; WORD Data2; WORD Data3; WORD Data4; BYTE Data5[6]; } GUID; Anyone know why it is declared this way?

  • Ruby: Streaming large AWS S3 object freezes

    - by Peter
Hi, I am using the ruby aws/s3 library to retrieve files from Amazon S3. I stream an object and write it to file as per the documentation (with debug every 100 chunks to confirm progress) This works for small files, but randomly freezes downloading large (150MB) files on VPS Ubuntu. Fetching the same files (150MB) from my mac on a much slower connection works just fine. When it hangs there is no error thrown and the last line of debug output is the 'Finished chunk'. I've seen it write between 100 and 10,000 chunks before freezing. Anyone come across this or have ideas on what the cause might be? Thanks The code that hangs: i=1 open(local_file, 'w') do |f| AWS::S3::S3Object.value(key, @s3_bucket) do |chunk| puts("Writing chunk #{i}") f.write chunk.read_body puts("Finished chunk #{i}") i=i+1 end end

  • How to access constant defined in child class from parent class functions?

    - by kavoir.com
I saw this example from php.net: <?php class MyClass { const MY_CONST = "yonder"; public function __construct() { $c = get_class( $this ); echo $c::MY_CONST; } } class ChildClass extends MyClass { const MY_CONST = "bar"; } $x = new ChildClass(); // prints 'bar' $y = new MyClass(); // prints 'yonder' ?> But $c::MY_CONST is only recognized in version 5.3.0 or later. The class I'm writing may be distributed a lot. Basically, I have defined a constant in ChildClass and one of the functions in MyClass (father class) needs to use the constant. Any idea?

  • jUnit same exception in different cases

    - by coubeatczech
    Hi, I'm writing a jUnit test for a constructor that parses a String and then check numerous things. When there's wrong data, for every thing, some IllegalArgumentException with different message is thrown. So I would like to write tests for it, but how can i recognize what error was thrown? This is how can I do it: @Test(expected=IllegalArgumentException.class) public void testRodneCisloRok(){ new RodneCislo("891415",dopocitej("891415")); } and this is how I would like to be, but I don't know if it is possible to write it somehow: @Test(expected=IllegalArgumentException.class("error1")) public void testRodneCisloRok(){ new RodneCislo("891415",dopocitej("891415")); }

  • Rails: What's the suggested approach to retrieve xml from an outside source

    - by Syrahn
Rails newbie (though long time programmer) here. I'm writing an test app that retrieves data from several outside sources (think Twitter, RSS feeds, etc.) and under certain circumstances, it stores that data in a db (or presents it to the user). The data model and the views are trivial. What I'm having difficulty with is making the actual xml HTTP call to the outside source and deserialize the xml response so I can query/use it in my controller/helper. What library/gem should I use to accomplish this? I tried looking this up around the net, but only came up with some article from 2006 which, knowing how fast Rails has developed, might well be completely deprecated. Your help is much appreciated.

  • How to update mutual entries in DB?

    - by Sthita
I am not able to perform mutual update to my Database. My Requirement is like this : Insert IDS UPDate DB Entries ID ConnectedTo ID connectedTo connectedVia 2 1 --- No Entry ----- 2 3 -- No Entry ----- When ID 1 Comes in to picture (Enties happened to Table) 1 4 1 3 2 1 5 2 4 1 1 2 2 5 1 When ID 3 Comes into picture (Enties happened to Table) 3 4 3 5 1 3 1 ---- 3 2 ---- Similarly when ID 4 Comes in to picture 4 9 4 2 3 4 10 4 5 1 4 3 4 2 1 4 1 1 9 4 1 10 4 Its basically Updating the mutual connections. No Duplicate entries should happen. Like for example 2 3 and 3 2 are mutually connected and 1 is associated with them so there is no need to insert (3 2 via 1). I think this is my requirement. Anything possible combinations i have missed please let me know. i will Update. Please help me writing the logic or any example using jdbc and java.

  • What do you do when you hate programming?

    - by Vimvq1987
Don't know where to ask this question. It's likely to be closed, I know. I got a hard work. Tried to code, tried to search, tried to ask. Got nothing. It make me terribly tired, and some way, I feel that in this moment, I hate programming. Some said that hard works improve yourself, yes, but not impossible-works. Is there sometimes that you hate programming? Is there sometimes that you feel so tired of writing code? How do you overcome those times?

  • Get the selected file in an Explorer window

    - by Jon Fournier
I'd like to know how, if possible, to get the path of the selected file in an open Windows Explorer window. If not, would it at least be possible to get the folder path of an open Windows Explorer window? The end reason I'm doing this, is a software tool I'm writing requires a user to select a file. I figure if they're already moving the file around with Windows Explorer and then start my tool up, it'd be good not to have to make them navigate to the folder again in the file open dialog box. My software would then be able to identify if it's got the right file extension and if so, just ask the user if they want to import that file. Thanks.

  • int vs const int&

    - by Valdo
I've noticed that I usually use constant references as return values or arguments. I think the reason is that it works almost the same as using non-reference in the code. But it definitely takes more space and function declarations become longer. I'm OK with such code but I think some people my find it a bad programming style. What do you think? Is it worth writing const int& over int? I think it's optimized by the compiler anyway, so maybe I'm just wasting my time coding it, a?

  • End marker for command line arguments

    - by rwallace
I'm writing a program which takes filenames and options on the command line in the usual way, and also can be directed to read arguments from a file. I'm implementing the semi-standard -- to turn off special treatment of subsequent arguments, and # as comment marker. I also want to implement a marker for 'disregard all arguments from here on', i.e. an end marker. Is there a common/semi-standard way to indicate this? Or, what way would people find least surprising?
