• Firefox dependencies problem on 12.10

  I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 today and now am getting the following error: You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.   I have Docky installed on Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and noticed after a recent upgrade my 'Helpers' are no longer available. After some research I found that Dockmanager is no longer installed either. I am unable to install it via the Software centre or via terminal using apt-get, the following error is returned; mark@Sonata:~$ sudo apt-get install dockmanager Reading package lists... • I cannot solve the "Install these packages without verification" problem

  I Googled and Googled and I just cannot find a solution to this problem: sudo apt-get install <whatever> Gives me: WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! and Install these packages without verification [y/N]? I cannot find a decent solution. The closest I got was to run: sudo apt-get install debian-keyring debian-archive-keyring But then, even thought, and against my good judgment I agreed to install the package without confirmation, I get: (I replaced http with XXXX because of forum limitations). • Dependencies not met on 12.04?

  Now I'm very aware that there are many questions out there that are quite similar to what I'm experiencing, but I have looked through many and I have not found a suitable answer. You are welcome to suggest questions that are similar, but I doubt that it will help. Getting on to the issue at hand, whenever I do anything that involves installation, whether it be codecs for videos, new programs or whatever the latter, I always get the 'Dependencies not met' error. In addition, I also get this notification in the panel: When clicked, the menu says this: "An error occurred. Please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or run apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: ' Error: Broken Count 0'. This usually means your installed packages have unmet dependencies." It gives me three items to click: Show Updates Install all updates Check for Updates And then finally: Show Notifications (with a tick) Preferences When I try 'Install all Updates' (also Check Updates Install) it says this: and also this: As well as 'Ubuntu has experienced an internal error' and 'Did this error occur when moving from one version of Ubuntu to another?' (I clicked NO, because it didn't). So I took it's advice and ran sudo apt-get install -f This is what results: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Correcting dependencies... • unable remove/reinstall libxss1:amd

  Whenever I try to install anything (software-center or apt-get) I get an error report stating that libxss1:amd is in a "very bad inconsistent state" (translated from german) and that I should reinstall it. That would not bother me much but I am never sure if the stuff I'm trying will be working in the end. It really resists from being repaired apt-get install, apt-get remove, apt-get -f install, and all the usual suspects - nothing works. It always comes to: dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von libxss1:amd64 (--configure): Paket ist in einem sehr schlechten inkonsistenten Zustand - Sie sollten es nochmal installieren, bevor Sie die Konfiguration versuchen. Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von: libxss1:amd64 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I posted the error as is, since my translation might not be exact. But I guess you can figure from my text. I found out that this file is the X screen saver. Maybe I should kill it before handling that file. If thats so, than please tell me how. • Installing packages into local directory?

  I'd like to install software packages, similar to apt-get install <foo> but: Without sudo, and Into a local directory The purpose of this exercise is to isolate independent builds in my continuous integration server. I don't mind compiling from source, if that's what it takes, but obviously I'd prefer the simplest approach possible. I tried apt-get source --compile <foo> as mentioned here but I can't get it working for packages like autoconf. I get the following error: dpkg-checkbuilddeps: Unmet build dependencies: help2man I've got help2man compiled in a local directory, but I don't know how to inform apt-get of that. Any ideas? UPDATE: I found an answer that almost works at http://askubuntu.com/a/350/23678. The problem with chroot is that it requires sudo. The problem with apt-get source is that I don't know how to resolve dependencies. I must say, chroot looks very appealing. Is there an equivalent command that doesn't require sudo?

• Create new terminal commands

  I recently installed eclipse the manual way. Extracting the file, setting up eclipse.desktop etc. It all works flawlessly. I also know it is possible to install eclipsee using sudo apt-get install eclipse-platform. If I use this method I can use the command eclipse in the terminal, and the program will start. Now the manual way I used does not enable the eclipse-command in the terminal. Instead if I use eclipse-command it asks me to install eclipse from the Softwarecenter (sudo apt-get install eclipse-platform). I wondered if there was some way of setting up a command like this to start eclipse? If so, can I do it for other programs like Apache-Maven mvn-command? I don't want to use "aliases" because I cannot setup and eclipse alias, when "eclipse" is listed in the apt repository. It seems as if only if I install the eclipse from apt-get install I can start eclipse from a single command in the terminal. I appreciate any help, and thanks in advance!

• Upgrade to 13.04 was not successful. Gstreamer not working. What do?

  I finally decided to upgrade to 13.04. In the middle of the installation my computer froze completely, and so I decided to force quit. I log back on, and notice that the login says 13.04, but not everything was updated. So I run the software updater. Some of the stuff gets updated, but not everything, I suppose. I try to run Rhythmbox, but it says that it's not able to form playback, and that the Gstreamer was messed up, and to please check installation. I don't know what other bugs maybe running. That's just the first I've encountered. The software updater won't let me update anymore because it says the updates need authentication.

I want my ReSharper 4.5 settings (the ones in .resharper file) to be upgraded to ReSharper 5.0 settings. Is there an automatic way to do it? Should I do it manually? Would just overwriting the .5.0.ReSharper file with the .4.5.resharper file do that trick?

  Hi All, I am working on upgrading a web app to asp.net 2 from 1. VS 2008 did its conversion things, and everything is building successfully and has been converted to a web application via the appropriate menu item in VS 2008. On launching the site using the Asp.net development server I am receiving a configuration error on the appsettings line in the machine config of Unrecognized attribute 'restartOnExternalChanges'. The app targets asp.net 2 in the projects properties in VS, and the error page indicates similar : Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.3053; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.3053 The error message seems to indicate I am trying to run this in an asp.net 1 environment, but surely that isnt the case, and if so how do I rectify this. • Replacing unversioned files in WiX major upgrade.

  I am still having this problem. This is the closest I have come to a solution that works, and yet it doesn't quite work. Here is (most of) the code: <Product Id='$(var.ProductCode)' UpgradeCode='$(var.UpgradeCode)' Name="Pathways" Version='$(var.ProductVersion)' Manufacturer='$(var.Manufacturer)' Language='1033'> Maximum="$(var.ProductVersion)" IncludeMaximum="no" Language="1033" Property="OLDAPPFOUND" / -- -- -- There is a later version of this program installed. The problem I am having is that I need the two files in the Database component to replace the previous copies. Since these files are unversioned, I have attempted to use the CompanionFile tag set to the PathwaysExe since that is the main executable of the application, and it IS being updated, even if the log says it isn't! The strangest thing about this is that the PathwaysLdf file IS BEING UPDATED CORRECTLY, and the PathwaysMdf file IS NOT. The log seems to indicate that the "Existing file is of an equal version (Checked using version of companion)". This is very strange because that file is being replaced just fine. The only idea I have left is that this problem has to do with the install sequence, and I'm not sure how to proceed! • Problem with WiX major upgrade!

  Okay, my last question on this journey of WiX upgrades managed to get my settings file to be preserved! However, There is another component that is being preserved that I don't want to! I need it to overwrite, and it's not. The component "Settings" now works, with the NeverOverwrite="yes", and a KeyPath="yes". However, the component immediately below it does not work! It needs to overwrite both the MDF and the LDF with new ones from the install! I've tried lots of stuff, and am stumped. Please and thank you! • Macbook memory upgrade question

  I've read some conflicting articles on Macbooks and memory upgrades. Some say you have to buy the "special" Mac memory (bulls$%t), others say manufacturers like Partriot and Ocz will work fine. My Macbook (non-pro) is about 6 mos old with it's 2 GB of memory (SO-DIMM 1066MHz DDR3). Does anyone have any definitive information of what will work? Thanks!

• Login fails after upgrade to ASP.net 4.0 from 3.5

  I cannot log in using any of the membership accounts using .net 4.0 version of the app. It fails like it's the wrong password, and FailedPasswordAttemptCount is incremented in my_aspnet_membership table. (I am using membership with mysql membership provider.) I can create new users. They appear in the database. But I cannot log in using the new user credentials (yes, IsApproved is 1). One clue is that the hashed passwords in the database is longer for the users created using the asp.net 4.0 version, e.g 3lwRden4e4Cm+cWVY/spa8oC3XGiKyQ2UWs5fxQ5l7g=, and the old .net 3.5 ones are all like +JQf1EcttK+3fZiFpbBANKVa92c=. I can still log in when connecting to the same db with the .net 3.5 version, but only to the old accounts, not the new ones created with the .net 4.0 version. The 4.0 version cannot log in to any accounts. I tried dropping the whole database on my test system, the membership tables are then auto created on first run, but it's still the same, can create users, but can't log in.

• How to upgrade a 1.4.3 TortoiseSVN-created repository to 1.6.x?

  A few years ago, TortoiseSVN 1.4.3 was deployed to our software development team and we are now looking at upgrading the client to the latest 1.6.x version. I had hoped this upgrade would be transparent with the additional features and modifications being client-side. For the most part, this was true except for a very important feature -- merging. When I try to merge a feature branch back into truck I get a show-stopping "Merge tracking not supported error." Here are some facts worth noting: When the repo was first created (before I was on board), it was created via the TortoiseSVN client itself. We do not have a 'svn server daemon' per se, rather the repository folders/database resides on a share folder that is accessible from our workstation machines via file:///. This was actually an eye opener for me, I had always thought there was some SVN server daemon we were talking to. We do not have any access to the underlying machine hosting the SVN share other than the ability to read/write to the share itself. I don't even know what OS the machine is running on. This share server was chosen because its drives are backed up nightly by our IT group. In all honesty, we really don't need the merge tracking feature although it would be nice to have. For the time being it would be sufficient to be able to use a 1.6.x TortoiseSVN client on the 1.4.3 repository and have it merge (sans tracking) without error. So now the question becomes, how does one upgrade a client-created 1.4.3 repo to a 1.6.x compatible version without access to the underlying machine the repo resides on? I was hoping the TortoiseSVN client itself had the ability to do this but that does not appear to be the case. Will I be forced to copy the entire repo over to my local drive, run some svn commands to upgrade the repo locally then copy the repo back to the share point? If so, will doing this break any compatibility with the the 1.4.3 clients in case we cant upgrade them all at the same time? Thanks for the help.

  I bought a Lenovo 430K with Windows 7 Home Premium and upgraded it to Windows 8 Pro. I created a DVD from which I installed the Windows 8 Pro upgrade. I'm underwhelmed with Windows 8, however. I want to install Linux as the host OS and run Windows 8 Pro as a guest OS. Will the Windows 8 Pro DVD that I created install Windows 8 Pro in a virtual machine, or would that virtual machine have to have Windows 7 installed first in order to install the upgrade?

  I have Windows XP 32-bit installed on this computer. I just purchased a Windows 7 64-bit as an ISO download upgrade version which I promptly burned to DVD and attempted to perform an upgrade installation. Here is the error message I am getting: Firstly, where are these "Setup log files" located? Second, does this mean I need to find compatible (64-bit?) drivers for the Mainboard and put them on floppy?
