    I have been trying to figure this out for way to long tonight. I have googled it to death and none of the examples or my hacks of the examples are getting it done. It seems like this should be pretty easy but I just cannot get it.   • Looking for the most painless non-RDBMS storage method in C#

    I'm writing a simple program that will run entirely client-side. (Desktop programming? do people still do that?) and I need a simple way to store trivial amounts of data in a structured form, but really don't see any need to use a database system. What's more, some of the data needs to be serialized and passed around to different users, like some kind of "file" or perhaps a "document". (has anyone ever done that before?) So, I've looked at using .Net DataSets, LINQ, direct XML manipulation, and they all seem like they would get the job done, but I would like to know before I dive into any of them if there's one method that is generally regarded as easier to code than others. As I said, the amount of data to be stored is trivial, even if one hundred people all used the same machine we're not talking about more than 10 MB, so performance is not as large a concern as is codeability/maintainability. Is "foo" stored somewhere relative to the bottom of the stack, and the compiler stores this as "hey, for each thread, have this space near the bottom of the stack, and foo is stored as 'offset x from bottom of stack'"?

The data is accessed from an AppWidgetProvider (similar to a BroadcastReceiver), and any given instance of the widget displays different data based on appWidgetId.   • Checking if a blob exists in Azure Storage

    Hi, I've got a very simple question (I hope!) - I just want to find out if a blob (with a name I've defined) exists in a particular container. I'll be downloading it if it does exist, and if it doesn't then I'll do something else. I've done some searching on the intertubes and apparently there used to be a function called DoesExist or something similar... but as with so many of the Azure APIs, this no longer seems to be there (or if it is, has a very cleverly disguised name). Or maybe I'm missing something simple... :) John

SQL db seems quite an overkill, but I really don't know what would be the best choice if I wanted to select random subset of questions etc. Perhaps some simple xml files? Thanks for advice.

    When I moved to Objective C (iOS) from C++ (and little Java) I had hard time understanding memory management in iOS. But now all this seems natural and I know retain, autorelease, copy and release stuff. After reading about ARC, I am wondering is there more benefits of using ARC or it is just that you dont have to worry about memory management. Before moving to ARC I wanted to know how worth is moving to ARC. XCode has "Convert to Objective C ARC" menu. Is the conversion is that simple (nothing to worry about)? Does it help me in reducing my apps memory foot-print, memory leaks etc (somehow ?) Does it has much testing impact on my apps ? What are non-obvious advantages? Any Disadvantage os moving to it?

    Hi, Does anyone have a good suggestion on how to do video recording? We have a camera that can record and then stream live video to a server. So this means we can have 1000's of cameras sending data 24X7 for recording. We will store data for over 7 / 14 / 30 days depending on the package. Per day if a camera is sending data to the server then it will store 1.5GB. So that means there is a traffic of 1.5GB / day / camera Total monthly 45GB / month / camera (Data + bandwidth for one camera) Please let me know the most cost effective way to get this data stored?   • ODBC Storage Size

    I'm pulling a lot of text from a MS SQL Server database. I'm not getting all the text (which includes some html. The text is stored perfectly on the database. However, when I run the query to get the data It will only pull part of the text. I pull the data using odbc_exec and store using $variable = odbc_result($runquery,"body"). if i display the content with odbc_result_all($runquery) i get part of the content. if I use echo $body; i get part of the content then some garbage and part of the text from the begining. very strange response. Is there a size limit? Any ideas what I'm missing here?

    Hey guys, i want to create a small document management system. there are several users who store their files. each file which is uploaded contains an info which user uploaded it and the document content itself. In a view there are displayed all files of ONE specific user, ordered by date. What would be better: 1) giving the documents a name or metadata(XML) which contain the date and user (and iterate through them to get the metadata) or 2) giving the files a random/unique name and store metadata in a DB? something like this: date | user | filename What would you say and why? The used programming language is java and the DB is MySQL.

  • Getting Partial / No Redundancy on VM's created on latest datastore

    Hi, First some background. I'm in the process of upgrading my ESX servers from 3.5 to vSphere 4 and so far I have setup the new vCenter Server. Before I start the upgrade of the ESX, I needed more storage so I created 3 datastores from available space on my Equallogic PS6000 which has been connected for a while so as far as connectivity, nothing has changed. but now here's my problem, I get a "Partial / No Redundancy" on any VM that I create in any of these new datastores. I can create VM's on any of the older datstores on LUN's from exactly the same Equallogic and it works fine, but not the new ones. Keep in mind that these new datastores are the only ones that were created under the new vCenter, so I believe it must have something to do with it. Is anyone aware of any issues about creating datastored using the new vCenter but on a 3.5 ESX host? ISCSI with QLogic QLE406x Thanks in advance for nay help. Germano

    Background I'm on a new VMWare install consisting of: 1 vCenter Server (containing inventory service, SSO, vCenter server, and web client server) 2 ESX Servers configured in a HA group Problem When a I view the summary for any one of my servers, I receive a notice: "" This is expected in our scenario and we're okay with it. Attempted Solutions As I understand from this article and this discussion, the proper way to remove the error message is to ignore it via setting the "das.ignoreRedundantNetWarning" propery to "true". I took the following steps: Logged into vCenter Right-clicked on my HA cluster and chose "Edit Settings..." Clicked "vSphere HA" section Clicked "Advanced Options..." Added the "das.ignoreRedundantNetWarning" option with a value of "true". Question How do I get this error to go away, and are there any reasons why adding this option may not have worked?   • How to convince management to deal with technical debt?

    This is a question that I often ask myself when working with developers. I've worked at four companies so far, and I've noticed a lack of attention to keeping code clean and dealing with technical debt that hinders future progress in a software app. For example, the first company I worked for had written a database from scratch rather than take something like MySQL and that created hell for the team when refacoring or extending the app. I've always tried to be honest and clear with my manager when he discusses projections, but management doesn't seem interested in fixing what's already there and it's horrible to see the impact it has on team morale and in their attitude towards others. What are your thoughts on the best way to tackle this problem? What I've seen is people packing up and leaving and the company becomes a revolving door with developers coming and and out and making the code worse. How do you communicate this to management to get them interested in sorting out technical debt?

  • What's a good tool for Scrum Project Management in game development? [closed]

    I'm looking for an efficient, easy-to-learn tool for Scrum project management not for proffesional use but to use it in my thesis concerning the use of Scrum in game development. Basically I want to visualize a production process of a hypothetical game. Some fragments of the production process should be really detailed to make my point, so basically user stories, tasks, burndown charts etc. are a must. I'm using Scrum, Kanban and some Lean practices for eliminating waste. I also want to use Extreme Programming practices in this production process including TDD and Continuous Integration. I have zero experience in proffesional project management so I need something that's fairly simple to use for a newb like me. Anyone can recommend a tool like that?     We're making a bespoke software for our client and use Codebase for our project management. Is it a good idea to let our client view our project management board? The advantages that we thought of are that this would enhance the cooperation between the client and the dev team, following agile practices. He would essentially become part of our team. It would also reduce communication overhead and make sure we're on the same page. The client could track the progression of the system and make suggestions along the way on the user stories. In addition, he could submit bugs or feature requests. The disadvantages that we though of are that some aspects of the board might be too technical to the client. He would suggest changes to the user stories too often and he might view some content that we normally wouldn't want our client to see. For example, when we compromise on technology or functionality, the client might question that and insist on doing things one way or the other.

    Xamarin 3 was released last week with a great new addition: Xamarin.Forms . This triggered our attention because we've been using such a system for a couple of years now. We've developed it by ourselves and used it for a bunch of projects. We've been looking for a way to make this project open source but we didn't manage to convince the management. They believe we should not make it open source because we won't win anything with it and all that will happen is that the competition will be able to build apps quicker with our library. We believe open sourcing our library will make the world a better place and that it will make our library much more stable and complete.
