  • graphics performance better on battery?

    Anyone have any idea why my laptop would perform (considerably) better while on battery than while plugged in? It's a Dell Latitude E6420 with Windows 8 Pro. I tried mirroring all the settings in the selected power plan from "On battery" to "Plugged In" and that didn't help. I then just restored the defaults for all power plans (balanced and high performance). I'm still seeing the same results. The best example where it is most noticeable (don't laugh) is Sim City Social in Chrome. I'm probably seeing a performance increase of 5x on battery versus plugged in. This is easily reproducible too. I'm very confused. Could it be caused by dust? The laptop isn't that old and there is no visible dust. I'm not going to take it apart to check the insides as it's a corporate laptop. Could it be overheating?   • Has the hardware in my modem gone bad?

    I contacted CenturyLink about my modem recently and received useless and unrelated information. The problem seems to be that the modem will no longer save settings, the web interface is unusable except in internet explorer for some reason, and the modem keeps resetting. CenturyLink claimed it had to do with signal strength but I checked and it is currently between good and outstanding according to this. All of the lights remain green even when it starts acting up and I lose internet and shortly before it crashes and reboots. Does anyone have any idea what is going on or what I can do to fix it? (Asking CenturyLink again is obviously not going to help.) Update 1: Accessing the syslog from the web interface causes a crash.   • Do out-of-office replies get sent to the return-path header?

    I always thought that the return-path header was used for bounced messages, so I have my email newsletter software setup to unsubscribe anyone whose email address replies back to the return-path email address. But recently some users started telling me their out-of-office replies where unsubscribing them. Do out-of-office replies get sent to the return-path on some email servers? I could check all emails to that address and see if they have the "message/delivery-status" content-type in one of the parts, but I wasn't sure if this was necessary.

  • Asterisk, IAXModem & Hylafax how-tos?

    I'm trying to set up Asterisk and IAXModem to send faxes via T38 (Yes, I know I'm swatting a fly with a Buick...) However, since I'm trying to do something so small with a product so large, I'm having trouble finding samples or how-tos that show me how to set this up. I've got all three installed, and I THINK I have my IAXModem config correct. I'm pretty sure that I have Hylafax correct (I've used it with T38Modem) so, I need to know which of the Asterisk samples I need to use, and how to use them. I think I want to use some combination of iax.conf, iaxprov.conf, sip.conf and sip_notify.conf. But I'm not sure where to put them, or what to change... I'm sure that the answer is RTFM, but I'm not sure WHICH M, or where in it to R... thanks. EDIT On a mailing list, someone told me that this actually WON'T WORK because IAX doesn't do T38. So, is there some other way to get Asterisk to work with Hylafax and send T38? I know that Asterisk does T38, the question is how to get the data from Hylafax and back...

  • Mac OS X: All bootcamp options start Windows

    I just installed the latest security update on Mac OS X (installed on 2-10-2010). On restart my Mac booted in Windows 7, which I had installed previously and was set not to boot by default. I tried to restart holding the alt key, and selected the Mac OS X partition, but still the Windows 7 partition boots. It does not matter what partition I choose, Windows 7 always boots. I took a look in the OS X partition and noticed that the admin home folder is empty, or at least Windows is not showing any files there. There is another user on OS X and I can see their files no problem. This has me stumped, has anyone any suggestions for a finding a solution?

  • Firewalling gateways and IDS's

    Hi, For IDS, I plan to have a Win 2008 server running on the gateway with the majority of roles disabled. I plan to firewall the Internet connection, but I'd also like to install Snort to work as an IDS. However, I am guessing that regardless of the Snort install of the promiscuous Winpcap driver, I won't be able to monitor ports that the firewall blocks. My thinking is that chain of flow is: Internet-Firewall on Win 2008-Winpcap-Snort-internal network Is there a way to still monitor services that the firewall will block (i.e. TCP 445 SMB) ? Perhaps run the data through Snort and then through the firewall ? Thanks

  • RemoteApp shows no certificate available but RD Session host finds it fine

    I am trying to set up remote app for a internal domain. I have a Root CA that is trusted my all of the end computers, that cert has signed a wildcard cert I am trying to use for the server. I added the pfx of the wildcard cert to the local machine personal store. From there I can use it fine for signing the RD Session Host session. However when I try to set up the signature for Remote App the certificate does not show up. What do I need to do to get my certificate to be available for for use? UPDATE: The Certificate was generated through the following commands: makecert -pe -n "CN=*.vw.local" -a sha1 -sky signature -ic VetWebCA.cer -iv VetWebCA.pvk -sv VetWebComputerWildcard.pvk VetWebComputerWildcard.cer pvk2pfx -pvk VetWebComputerWildcard.pvk -spc VetWebComputerWildcard.cer -pfx VetWebComputerWildcard.pfx The resultant pfx was added to the machine local store via mmc. Oddly, going in to Powershell if I add the -CodeSigningCert flag to find the wildcard certificate it is excluded from the serch results for Get-Childitem in my Cert:\Local Machine\My path, but if I don't include it it is there.

  • How to Approach CentOS Back Up on GoDaddy Dedicated Hosting

    Does anyone have any experience with backing up a dedicated server at GoDaddy or anywhere else? I have a CentOS system. I recently made a big newbie mistake working on linux and toasted my server. I had to start over from scratch b/c I damaged it so bad. GoDaddy says I need to handle it all myself b/c I am not paying them for back ups. Does anyone have any idea on how to approach this back up? I'm not sure how a backup on dedicated hosting would be different than a normal linux back up. In any case, I don't know how to do normal linux backups.

  • HP Pavillion DV6500 recovery disk failure

    I recently attempted to re-install Windows Vista on an HP Pavillion DV6500 using the factory recovery DVD's, but encountered a strange problem. When the recovery disk attempted to reformat the hard disk, it failed at 22%. The error message provided was not very informative, just the error code "0x400110020000 1005". A google search turned up some people with a similar problem who asserted that HP has been know to ship corrupted recovery DVDs. The recovery disk did manage to reformat the the recovery partition before failing though, so recovering from the partition is no longer an option. It would be possible to reinstall from an off-the-shelf retail copy of Vista and then pull the drivers from HP's website, but I don't have access to a copy of Vista, and it would really be outrageous to have to purchase a new OS when I have a perfectly valid license already. Thought about biting the bullet and upgrading to Windows 7, but my understanding is that without Vista installed I'd be unable to use the upgrade version, and be forced to purchase the more expensive non-upgrade retail copy (!). Can anyone suggest a possible solution to this Catch-22? I've run out of ideas.

  • How to fix choppy video with VLC player?

    When playing most movies in VLC player, the video feed is choppy. Furthermore, the sound is near perfect. Another catch is, this video issue wasn't always an issue. I use to play movies with no problem with video or sound. I can not pin point what has changed between the it use to work fine and the time it started being choppy though. I have an ASUS G73JW-A1. This system should be more than enough to handle the demand of playing HD videos. Movies that are normally effected are HD videos. These video range from 4 to 9 gigs. In addition, the videos are in MKV, MP4 (or M4V), and AVCHD (or M2TS) formats. I get the same results when playing move directly off my hard drive or off an external. Finally, all the drivers have been recently checked and updated if needed.

    If I have my laptop on the LAN, then Powershell remoting works fine from my workstation to the laptop. However, the LAN is wireless, and so sometimes I will connect on a wire to my workstation. It has two ethernet ports so I have the secondary wired up to share to the laptop using Win7's Internet Connection Sharing. (Btw I know that avoiding ICS would solve the problem, but that's not an option right now.) So my question is: what magic registry bits or command line options do I need to flip to get remoting to work to my laptop through ICS?   • small IIS web farm-create an Active Directory domain or no?

    We have a smallish web farm of < 5 Windows 2008 servers. Some do data, most do IIS hosting. Is it a good/bad idea to set up a domain controller and put all in the same "production" domain? We want to avoid a world where we have to sync multiple admin passwords between the boxes (or share admin credentials among the team). Presumably, the DC would be just another VM, so hardware cost doesn't enter into the discussion.

  • Windows 7 fails to install

    I'm upgrading from Vista SP1 (which was actually upgraded from XP over a year ago) to Windows 7 RTM (64-bit Ultimate to 64-bit Ultimate). After 4 hours or so, the install fails with the message "This version of Windows could not be installed, Your previous version of Windows has been restored, and you can continue to use it." This error is back at my Vista desktop, there's no error that I could see during install, I just a message indicating that it was reverting everything. I tracked down the error logs and here's the log at I uploaded the error log (from C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther) and uploaded onto Pastebin.     Yesterday I installed CentOS 5.4 on one of my servers, and it appears that the official BIND/named package has trouble starting for reasons I cannot deduce.     I'm configuring a new desktop. I'm looking through all PCI Express 2.0 x16 video cards on NewEgg at the moment. All cards seem to be stating that they have SLI Support or CrossFireX support. I know that these 2 technologies enable you to connect more than one video card together to create more of a powerful video experience. These cards that have this support seem to be more expensive that other cards though. When I did a NewEgg search for cards that did NOT have these two supports, no matches came up for PCI Express 2.0 x16 (haven't checked other interfaces yet though). Can you run an SLI/CrossFireX card as a single card (and if you can is it efficient or even good?), or do you need to have more than one card to run them? Also, do they make cards without these two technologies anymore, and are they even cheaper at this point? I really have no need for SLI/CrossFireX at all, so I was wondering what I should look into. Do cards without this technology not run on the PCI Express 2.0 x16 interface? Thanks ahead of time for all your help.
