• Ubuntu 12.10 installation in virtual box

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.10 as guest in virtual box in Windows 7 machine. After intallation and copying the files it asks me to restart Now and I click that button but I get an error that Virtual box stopped working and it prompts me to close the virtual box. When i restart Virtual box, Status in the Ubuntu is displayed as Aborted and after restarting it tries to reinstall Ubuntu. I have tried thrice. Please guide me how to resolve this issue. • Linux DD command partition -to- partition

  I just used the DD command to copy the contents of one partition over to another partition on another drive, like this: dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sdb2 bs=4096 conv=noerror sda2 partition was 66GB and sdb2 was 250GB. I read that by doing this the extra space on the drive I am copying to will be wasted, is this true? I wasn't worried about loosing the extra space for the time being however, I just ran: sudo kill -USR1 (PID) to view the current status of DD and it has written over 66GB of data, will it continue to write data until it gets to 250GB? If so, is there a way to stop the process without corrupting it as waiting for it to write blank space seems like a waste of time.

• Can't get HP Officejet 6500 card reader to work.

  This network (wired) printer works great using the latest HPLIP drivers. However when I plug in an SD card, it just blinks and never shows up mounted anywhere. Has anyone come up with a way to mount these? • Install Ubuntu and erase Windows Vista

  I have an older laptop with a ADA hard disk I can't really buy a new one so I want to erase Windows Vista on my computer and only have Ubuntu so that I can have more space. How do I make it go directly to my blank CD? My Windows Vista is messed up and I can't even get into it. I want to download the new version of Ubuntu while in Ubuntu. I downloaded it but it didn't go directly to the blank CD. I tried to copy all of Ubuntu onto the CD once it was downloaded but it says there was an error while copying. What should I do?

• BTrFS subvolume / snapshot question

  I think I'm having difficulty fully understanding subvolumes and snapshots. The /home partition is btrfs. I want to create a "backup" snapshot of /home/user (for example) but user has existed for years (previously ext4 btrfs-convert). I believe you can only make a snapshot of a subvolume. I checked and there are no "default" subvolumes already present. 1) Is there another way for me to backup /home/user other than creating a subvolume /home/user2 and copying everything from user to user2 in order to snapshot it?

• Backup files with rsync: error 23

  Hi I'm trying to make a backup of my /home to transfer all data from one computer to another. I wanted to save the backup on the same computer and than transfere it to another one. For safety reasons, I'm trying to learn how does it work on the computer without a lot of data (the new one) to be sure I won't delete something instead of copying it. I've run in terminal: sudo rsync -avz /home/maria /home/guest/backup and I had as the result: sent 58797801 bytes received 23050 bytes 4705668.08 bytes/sec total size is 100202958 speedup is 1.70 rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1060) [sender=3.0.7] I've tried once again, with the same result. I have no idea, which files were not transferred, what makes the whole backup useless for me (I wanted to do it automatically in order not to forget about something and loose it). On both computers I have the same system (Ubuntu 10.04). Rsync version: 3.0.7-1ubuntu1. Thanks for any tips

• Is it possible to copy U1 files between two PCs locally when an Ubuntu user account is recreated?

  I have 2 Ubuntu 11.04 PCs (desktop and laptop), both synced via U1. Recently I completely rebuilt the user account (completely deleted the home directory) on one of the two (the desktop), and now I have to resync. Problem is that the PC is on a slow connection and I have difficulties resyncing the 14gb of data. Of course I have the opportunity of moving it to a place where the connection is faster, but it's not comfortable, and it will take some time. Since the laptop is in sync with the account I was wondering if stopping the service and copying the files + some database (which files is the question) could let me avoid resyncing everything.....

  Here is my question. When making a game app for Android, I considered first the device. It's no problem to save progress everything (from levels to records) on a smartphone because it has an SD Card slot. Exception to this, the tablet PC, it can really nothing but on internal only storage. For example, I'm using this tutorial for audio spectrum (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cN1VzZXcdo) that involves copying from internal to external in order to detect frequency. It works on the desktop but not on the Android device (Tablets only [i.e. Google Nexus Tablet]). Is there a way to optimize save/load game problems due to internal/external device issues? Plus, additionally, what's the reason why my device won't work on tablets, except the desktop, while testing the audio spectrum code and why? Also, is it the same with saving/loading game?

  Is there any way of configuring FileZilla so that I can open all the files on a server that I use to edit with just one click. For example if the files are like this:- /home/abc/def/one.txt /home/abc/def/yet/another/directory/two.txt /home/abc/def/ghi/yet/another/directory/three.txt then it is very time-consuming to navigate through each directory and open the required files. These are only 3 files but what if we have around 10 to 20 files? Yes, copying the path of the directories is one thing. But something that is built-in so that I can just click a button like open all the required files of this connection and it opens all the files in the editor (as set in FileZilla preferences) then that would be great!

  I spent some time and tried varioues things but nothing works. Here's what I have tried so far(changing the slideshow manually): Making a new folder /usr/share/backgrounds/mywallpapers and add my own background-1.xml in there. Copying a bunch of my own wallpaper files into /usr/share/backgrounds/ Copy /usr/share/backgrounds/Contest/background-1.xml to /usr/share/backgrounds/ I logged out and in and still no changes in Appearance app. I have heard about Wallch but I don't want some app running in the background all the time. I'm not even sure Wallch will work with Gnome 3. I also tryied gnome-3-wp (Gnome 3 Wallpaper Slideshow app) but it just seems broken for Oneiric Ubuntu 11.10. Anyone has a solution?

• Content theft - Where can I go from here?

  I am the webmaster of a very successful blog in a fairly small niche. Recently our success has started to bite us with people copying posts on the site without consent and trying to pass them off as their own work. Most sites stop as soon as you contact them but there is one in particular that is a blogger site which persists in passing off our content as their own. Every post we find we report to Google and they have been fairly good at taking the posts offline within a day or two but this isn't good enough or a long term solution. Given the nature of what is being blogged about after 24 hours the post is pretty much useless so I need some way to just stop them from taking our content? Any ideas? I don't want to go down the route of using a third party for people to get our RSS feed but I guess that is one option?

  I setup and fully configured ubuntu-12.04-server machine with cobbler/dhcp running in about 10 minutes (compared to taking over an hour on centos 5.8). I discovered the cobbler import which appears to be useful.   This is a post mostly to myself, so that when I forget this I can come here and check it out :) (I forget about ctrl-b from time to time) When copying diagrams from Enterprise Architect you can use ctrl-B to include the swim-lanes. A normal ctrl-c will not give you the swim-lanes. A side effect is that ctrl—b gives you a copy of the whole diagram, you cannot select what objects to copy. So marking objects first or pressing ctrl-A to selects all is both unnecessary and meaningless since ctrl-b seems to mean: “copy the whole diagram now and include all the stuff in there, even the swimlanes” (which ctrl-A, ctrl-C does not).

  With clustering now available in GlassFish since version 3.1 (our Spring 2011 release), a good number of folks have been looking at migrating their existing GlassFish 2.x-based clustered environments to a more recent version to take advantage of Java EE 6, our modular design, improved SSH-based provisioning and enhanced HA performance. The GlassFish documentation set is quite extensive and has a dedicated Upgrade Guide. It obviously lists a number of small changes such as file layout on disk (mostly due to modularity), some option changes (grizzly, shoal), the removal of node agents (using SSH instead), new JPA default provider name, etc... There is even a migration tool (glassfish/bin/asupgrade) to upgrade existing domains. But really the only thing you need to know is that each module in GlassFish 3 and beyond is responsible for doing its part of the upgrade job which means that the migration is as simple as copying a 2.x domain directory to the domains/ directory and starting the server with asadmin start-domain --upgrade. Binary-compatible products eligible for such upgrades include Sun Java System Application Server 9.1 Update 2 as well as version 2.1 and 2.1.1 of Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server.

  There's an app called craigspro that provides a much better interface to Craigslist on mobile devices. They claim that the app is Officially Licensed by Craigslist, but I thought Craigslist never licensed their content, and the only thing I can find on the subject in the terms of use is this: Any copying, aggregation, display, distribution, performance or derivative use of craigslist or any content posted on craigslist whether done directly or through intermediaries (including but not limited to by means of spiders, robots, crawlers, scrapers, framing, iframes or RSS feeds) is prohibited. As a limited exception, general purpose Internet search engines and noncommercial public archives will be entitled to access craigslist without individual written agreements executed with CL that specifically authorize an exception to this prohibition if ... Does anyone know how do get a "written agreement" with Craigslist, and roughly what their terms would be? Do they charge a fee, or just check that you're not evil? • How can I copy/paste files via RDP in Kubuntu?

  I recently installed the latest Kubuntu (x64) on my work machine as I am trying to migrate away from Windows. Unfortunately I use RDP very frequently to connect to customer's servers and need to be able to copy files across. I have tried the following packages with no luck: remmina rdesktop xfreerdp My latest attempt to solve this involved connecting one of my folders to the remote server, here is the command I used to launch rdesktop: rdesktop -5 -K -r disk:home=/home/dai -r clipboard:CLIPBOARD -r sound:off -x l -P 192.168.0.2 -u "administrator" -p pass The servers are not all running the same version of Windows, the one I've been trying so far is running Server 2003 R2. Customer servers range from Server 2000 to Server 2008. I've been Googling this like mad but all the solutions I find seem to fail, maybe because almost all the help out there assumes that I'm running Gnome. Sorry if this is a stupid question. Thanks in advance for your help. Edit: Copying and pasting text seems to work just fine, but that's not what I need.

• Can't copy from hfs+ external

  I've spent days and days trying to figure this out, but still can't. I think I've read every article on this and tried all there is to try, and I still can't copy any file from my mac-formatted hfs+ external drive. Sorry if there's still an article I've missed.. I have disabled journaling and tried all the hfsprogs commands I could find, but still whenever I click on a folder on the external and try to copy it to my home directory, I get this: "The folder xxx cannot be handled because you don't have permission to read its content." I then found an article about inoring this by copying files through the Terminal. When trying to run the sudo cp -r command in the Terminal with my external drive path, I always get 'no such file or directory'.. Does anyone have another suggestion for me? Thanks in advance!

• What is the benefit of triple buffering?

  I read everything written in a previous question. From what I understand in double buffering the program must wait until the finished drawing is copied or swapped before starting the next drawing. In triple buffering the program has two back buffers and can immediately start drawing in the one that is not involved in such copying. But with triple buffering if you're in a situation where you can take advantage of the third buffer doesn't that suggest that you are drawing frames faster than the monitor can refresh. So then you don't actually get a higher frame rate. So what is the benefit of triple buffering then?
