  • How to listen to keyboard events in GWT table?

    In my GWT program I have a table that has a selected row. I'd like to move the row selection with the up- and down-keys on the keyboard. So I have to catch the key events somehow. The GWT docs handle key events in input fields only. But I don't have an input field! Is this possible at all? Maybe it is a DOM/Javascript restriction that GWT cannot work around...

  • What kind of events should be created for a CRUD application?

    I have an application that is centered around a database (ORM is LINQ-SQL) that has a table called Assignment. I am using the repository pattern to manipulate the database. My application is basically going to perform CRUD operations. I am new to delegates and events and I am asking you what events I should create (like maybe AssignmentCreating, AssignmentCreated) and what kind of delegate to use (like maybe a custom delegate or just an EventHandler)?

  • JavaScript method to write to Microsoft Visual Web Developer Debugger?

    I generally test my web apps with Firefox and use Firebug. I love Firebug. But when I'm testing JavaScript code in IE I use the debugger in Microsoft's Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition. I would love to have an equivalent to Firebug's console.log methods which would allow me to log messages to Visual Web Developer. Any way to log messages to the error list/messages list/output pane using JavaScript?

  • Bubbling up events . .

    I have multiple layers in an application and i find myself having to bubble up events to the GUI layer for doing status bar changes, etc . . I find myself having to write repeated coded where each layer simply subscribes to events from the lower layer and then in the call back simply raise an event up the chain. Is there a more efficient way of doing this?

  • Coming up with manageable game ideas as a hobbyist game developer

    I'm trying to come up with ideas for games to develop - as per the advice on this question I've started jotting down and brainstorming my ideas as I get them, and it has worked relatively well - I now have a growing collection of ideas that I think are relatively original. The trouble is that I'm a solo hobbyist developer so my time is limited (and I have short attention span!) I've decided to set myself a limit of 1 working week (i.e. 35-40 hours) to develop / prototype my game, but all of the ideas that really spark my imagination are far too complex to be achievable in that sort of time (e.g. RTS or RPG style gameplay), and none of my simpler ideas really strike me as being that good (and whenever I get a flash of inspiration I invariably end up making things more complicated!) Am I being too picky - should I just take one of my simpler ideas and have a go?

    I've done web development for the past ten years, and have used Ubuntu for my operating system for the past five. I feel like my design and development skills could be useful, but don't know how I can help with experience in web development. I'm currently versed in Ruby, PHP, ColdFusion, and Javascript, and I took a Java class in college. I'm also willing to learn a new language, but don't even know where to start as far as what would be most helpful to the Ubuntu community. Are there projects that a web developer could help with in Ubuntu? Or what language should I learn to best help contribute?

Here are my initial comments:The code is well illustrated by diagrams. The approach is practical. The code is well commented, however the C# code samples would be better had they been fully Style Cop compliant.I recommend this book to all C# and VB.NET Development teams. I concur with the author who states that the book is not for learning C# or VB.NET, however it is an excellent book for C# or VB.NET developers to extend their knowledge of the Dot Net framework.

    We are currently hiring a junior developer to help me out, as I have more projects than I can currently manage. I have never hired anyone who wasn't a friend or at least an acquaintance. I have a phone interview with the only applicant that actually stood out to me (on paper), but I have never done this before. Our projects are all high scalability, data intensive web applications that process millions of transactions an hour, across multiple servers and clients. To be language/stack specific, we use ASP.Net MVC2, WebForms and C# 4, MSSQL 2008 R2, all running atop Windows Server 2008 R2 What should I ask him? How should I structure the phone call?

  • Triggering custom events in AJAX callbacks

    I'm pretty new to JavaScript, but one of the things that's been frustrating is that our AJAX callbacks have been getting packed with different functionality, making it difficult to keep everything separated and organized. I'm really new to programming, I have a feeling learning MVC a bit more would help me, but for now using custom events seems like it could help me keep my code a lot cleaner and prevent some problems. Here's what I'm talking about: function myAjaxFunction(){ $.post('ajax/test.html', function(data) { $(document).trigger('testDataLoaded',data); }); } function myOtherFunctionThatsDependentUponAjax(){ $(document).one('testDataLoaded', function(data){ alert (data); } } I also don't know if it's ok that I'm triggering document or not...   • Yet another ADF book - Oracle ADF Real World Developer’s Guide

    I'm happy to report that the number of ADF published books is expanding yet again, with this time Oracle's own Jobinesh Purushothaman publishing the Oracle ADF Real World Developer’s Guide.  I can remember the dim dark days when there was but just 1 Oracle book besides the documentation, so today it's great to have what I think might be the 7 or 8th ADF book publicly available, and not to forgot all our other technical docs too. Jobinesh has even published some extra chapters online that will give you a good taste of what to expect.  If you're interested in positive reviews, the ADF EMG already has it's first happy customer. Now to see if I can get Oracle to expense me a copy.

    In a new interview titled “Gilda Garretón, a Java Developer and Parallelism Computing Research,” Garretón shares her first-hand experience developing with Java and Java 7 for very large-scale integration (VLSI) of computer-aided design (CAD). Garretón gives an insightful overview of how Java is contributing to the parallelism development and to the Electric VLSI Design Systems, an open source VLSI CAD application used as a research platform for new CAD algorithms as well as the research flow for hardware test chips.  Garretón considers that parallelism programming is hard and complex, yet important developments are taking place.  "With the addition of the concurrent package in Java SE 6 and the Fork/Join feature in Java SE 7, developers have a chance to rely more on existing frameworks and dedicate more time to the essence of their parallel algorithms."   • Task ownership with Wordpress - CSS - Designer or Developer?

    We have a dispute regarding who owns which tasks when it comes to the CSS on our live site. Our designer argues that he is not responsible to log-in to word press and modify the css or use ftp for any changes because that's not his job description while developer argues that since it is css, it belongs to designer and that he is to update the changes to the server and then compare and correct the output. I'd like experienced people working in professional development environment to put a light on this scenario. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, or is there a separate forum for business development or project management specific questions?
