• SQL Server Reporting Services - website blank, builder works

  We have a few reports in SQL Server Reporting Services. For some reason when we run the report from the website, it doesn't return any data. When I run the same report from the Report Builder, it returns data. I looked in the logs and the only errors I could find is: ReportingServicesService!library!8!6/15/2012-08:12:33:: i INFO: Current DB Version Unknown, Instance Version C.0.8.54. • Cannot access Network Shares on Windows Server 2008 running VisualSVN Server

  I have installed VisualSVN server on Windows Server 2008. The server is part of a domain but not the domain controller, it is just a data server and now an SVN server. VisualSVN uses port 80 and can only be access from inside the network (i do i by going to the dns name of the server). However, ever since i have installed this, other computers on the network can no longer access the shared folders on the server EXCEPT the domain controller which has no problems accessing the shares. I am stumped, i am guessing it is something to do with Apache running and not using host-headers (or whatever the Apache equivalent may be) but just being bound to the servers DNS name or IP. Any suggestions?

• Log Shipping breaking daily on SQL Server 2005

  I am facing a somewhat serious problem with Log Shipping on SQL Server 2005 and I am having trouble to correct it, so I will try some help from SF's experts. I have a Windows 2003 Server (PROD) that ships transactional log backups to another two servers: STAND1: Windows 2003 Server with SQL Server 2005. STAND2: Windows 2008 R2 Server with SQL Server 2005. The problem is that Log Shipping to STAND2 is breaking for ~ 90 minutes some times of the day and returning back without intervention. The breaking occur at times when the backup file is larger (after reindexing, etc). I can see the message below logged on the COPY job: *** Error: The specified network name is no longer available The copy agent was breaking dozens times a day only to STAND2 server, and after the changes below "only" breaks ~ two times a day: The frequency of the backup job was changed from 5 minutes to 10 minutes. Instead of backing up the 4 databases to the same folder, the log backups are now saved on separated folders for each database. The backup job doesn't run 24hs now, and only for 14 hours a day, when people are working on the database. I configured the SQL Server instances on the three servers to limit the memory, leaving more memory to the OS. Now I don't know what to do. Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks!

• Server 2003 PDC DNS not working..Failover server is...

  In the midst of trying to utilize proc power, i create a fault tolerant DNS server a while ago. Since, Ive been trying to add another controller for exchange. So I thought I would revert back to a single primary DNS for the meantime and now Im balancing on a thread. The server i thought I uninstalled DNS, is still acting as DNS. And now the PDC does not resolve. Can anybody walk me through, Im overwhelmed and cant think straight... Im afraid if anyone restarts their machine they wont have internet. Update Ok so from the beginning. I was configuring Exchange on a new server 2008. How it happened I dont know, but it started to not resolve DNS. (exclamation mark on NIC) even though everything was static. So ultimately I decided to remove the server from the problem, because I noticed DNS was in disarray if I used the DNS IP of the first server. This is when I tested with nslookup on each DNS server. I had uninstalled DNS from the second server, but nslookup was still resolving with that IPaddress, which has me all wound up cause I dont understand. So, since the first DNS server isn't resolving, Im assuming if the second one isnt configured right I'll loose internet. Im just confused and dont know where to start troubleshooting...

• Windows Server Connected to Domain Without Being Domain Controller

  Can a Windows Server be connected to an Active Directory domain without being a domain controller? Here's the scenario: I want to use Windows Server 2012 to run several virtual machines for testing our web application in a variety of environments. We have a corporate domain, and I'd like to use the corporate login (or at least a common login) on each of the virtual machines without necessarily having to get IT to set up each virtual machine on the corporate domain. Also, I need the server itself to be able to authenticate domain logins (the app uses domain login information for users to login). However, I absolutely do NOT want it to be a DC on the corporate network. Thus, my questions: Can a Windows Server be connected to an Active Directory domain without being a DC? Can a Windows Server authenticate users on another domain without being a part of that domain? Can a Windows Server be a domain controller in a small network (comprised of just the server and itself) and use the corporate domain's Active Directory for authenticating user logins to the server, the web app, and the virtual machines?

• Combining Scrum, TFS2010 and Email to keep everyone in the loop

  Often you will receive rich information from your Product Owner (Customer) about tasks. That information can be in the form of Word documents, HTML Emails and Pictures, but you generally receive them in the context of an Email. You need to keep these so your Team can refer to it later, and so you can send a “done” when the task has been completed. This preserves the “history” of the task and allows you to keep relevant partied included in any future conversation. At SSW we keep the original email so that we can reply Done and delete the email. But keeping it in your email does not help other members of the team if they complete the task and need to send the “done”. Worse yet, the description field in Team Foundation Server 2010 (TFS 2010) does not support HTML and images, nor does the default task template support an “interested parties” or CC field. You can attach this content manually, but it can be time consuming. Figure: Description only supports plain text, and History supports HTML with no images   What should we do? At SSW we always follow the rules, and it just so happened that we have rules to both achieve this, and to make it easier. You should follow the existing Rules to Better Project Management  and attach the email to your task so you can refer to and reply to it later when you close the task: Do you know what Outlook add-ins you need? Describe the work item request in an email Use Outlook Add-in to move the email to a TFS Work Item When replying to an email with “done” you should follow: Do you update Team Companion template, so the email "subject" doesn't change? Do you update Team Companion template, so you can generate a proper "done" mail? Following these simple rules will help your Product Owner understand you better, and allow your team to more effectively collaborate with each other. An added bonus is that as we are keeping the email history in sync with TFS. When you “reply all” to the email all of the interested partied to the Task are also included. This notified those that may have been blocked by your task to keep up to date with its status. This has been published as Do you know to ensure that relevant emails are attached to tasks in our Rules to Better Scrum using TFS. What could we do better? I would like to see this process automated so that we capture the information correctly in the task without the need to use email. This would require a change to the process template in Team Foundation Server to add an “Interested Parties” field. Each reply to the email would need to be automatically processed into a Work Item. This could be done by adding a task identifier as the first item in the “Relates to” email header, and copying in an email address that you watch. This would then parse out the relevant information and add the new message to the history, update the “Interested parties” field and attach the Images. Upon reflection, it may even be possible, but more difficult to do this using ONLY the History field and including some of the header information in there to the build a done email with history. This would not currently deal with email “forks” well, but I think it would be adequate for our needs. It would be nice if we could find time to implement this, but currently it is but a pipe dream. • Which is better : Storing/retrieving images on/from SQL server or in a directory on server

  I am working on a project in Asp.net MVC and need to work with images. There is an SQL database with a Product table. Every product in the table will have it's own image. I have two ways to do this : 1) Save the image in a web directory and store the URL on database. 2) Store the image in SQL itself in binary format and then retrieve it. Which is a better approach ? Mind you, I have no idea how second method works :-P . I will only learn this if there are merits to the second method

• Is there a way to forward emails associated with a domain without a mail server?

  A client owns example1.com but wants to also purchase example2.com and have it point to their original site at example1.com. No problem there. But they also want any emails going to example2.com to be forwarded to their counter parts at example1.com Eg: if someone emails [email protected] it will be forwarded to [email protected] They only way I can think of doing this at the moment is to set up host for example2.com and then set up mail forwarders in cpanel. But this seems a bit excessive and costly. Does anyone know another, cheaper way of doing this?

  I have scripted my SQL server 2000 database and created it on a 2008 server. I update the database using a ADO .Net Dataset designed in VS 2003. My problem is certain tables that have identity fields don't have these fields as auto increment in the dataset? I could set these to auto increment in code, but this seams like a work around.   I recall that the import tool in sql server 2000 would copy indexes, relationships, etc. In sql server 2005/2008 the import tool in SSMS will only create the tables, copy the data, but the keys, indexes, relationships are missing. I can find no option in the import wizard to enable this? What am I missing here? Is this not possible anymore for any good reason?

  I need to setup a mail server that has the following functionality: if a user sends an email to a specific address on this server, the server must first check if the email has a PDF attachment, do some processing to that PDF file and then reply to the user's initial mail with the new PDF file attached. My question is how would it be possible to achieve this functionality, and what software / mail server do you recommend? I'm thinking that it can be solved the following way: when the server receives a new email it executes an external Python script that checks the attachment, processes the PDF file and then sends it back in the user's mailbox. What mail server would be able to do this, and what configurations does it need?

• Remove Downed Exchange Server from First Administrative Group

  I had a server die. It is gone forever. It is still listed in the servers folder of the first administrative group in the Exchange System Manager. When I click "all tasks Remove Server" I get the following error: The Server "SERVERNAME" cannot be removed because: -One or more users currently use a mailbox on this server. These users must be moved to a mailbox store on a different server or be mail disabled before uninstalling this server. Facility: Exchange System Manager ID no: c103f492 Exchange System Manager Any help would be MUCH appreciated. I cannot access the mailbox stores anymore and I do not care about the lost mailboxes. We deleted the inactive and old users as well. So I am stumped on this one. I just need to remove the old machine. THANKS!

  Hello, I have two machines: A: Win 2008 server B: Windows 7 They are on the same workgroup, and I enabled network discovery. So on the server, I have SQL Server installed with a SQL Server account (mixed mode is enabled). I'm trying to connect to this server from the win 7 machine in the workgroup, but no go. Do I have to reference the server by something else than machine name? How do I successfully establish that relation? I am a n00b to this type of thing... Thanks.

  I have a Flask web application running behind gunicorn and Nginx. Nginx proxies any traffic to ivrhub.org to the correct flask app. I would very much like to use inbox.py to process some incoming email. Running inbox.py's example on my server and then sending an email to [email protected] does not work as I intended. The inbox.py server does not seem to receive anything but the email also does not bounce. I'm missing something conceptually -- is there a DNS setting I need to configure or something I need to adjust with Nginx?

• SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise database has unexpected 4GB database size limit

  I have SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise installed on a local Windows 7 x64 workstation. When I create a database on the server, it unexpectedly has a 4GB size limit (Database properties in SQL Server Management Studio say size = 3934.38 MB, space available = 47.13 MB). Unfortunately the database needs more than 4GB, and Enterprise is not supposed to have a practical maximum size. I confirmed the database is on the Enterprise server: SELECT @@VERSIONMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1600.1 (X64) Apr 2 2010 15:48:46 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7600: ) The database file is not set to restrict growth in SQL Server Management Studio, and there is plenty of hard drive space. The database was copied from SQL Express (which has a 4GB limit), but the same occurs with a fresh database creation. I've spent a couple of hours trying to figure this out and Google-searching, to no avail. Any ideas?

• Local network cache of PHP and Apache2 on Win Server 2008 R2

  Software configuration : I have a new server with Windows Server 2008 R2 installed via VMWare. I have installed Apache2.2, PHP5.2 and MySQL5.5 as separate packages. Issue : On my first installation of my application, all works great. When I updated some JS and CSS files and accessed my application again from a PC on local network, I got the old JS and CSS versions. When I access the same application on local server I got the latest versions of those files. Link of my application on local server is : http://localhost/BADIL Link of my application from local network is : http://LOCAL_SERVER_IP/BADIL I think that must be some cache but I don't know where. Maybe on Win Server 2008 R2 or on VMWare? The question is: Why, when I access my application on the server, everything works fine, but when I access the same application from a local network, I do not see the updated versions of JS and CSS files?

• Windows Server 2008 R2 Software Deployment on Active Directory - Schema Issue

  We have two servers, one running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and one running Windows Server 2008 R2. Both servers have their own versions of Group Policy Management (1.0.2 on 2003 and 6.0.0.1 on 2008). We are wanting to migrate everything over to the newer 2008 server, including software deployment. However, when I try to add a new software package using a .msi file, I get the following error: "The schema for the software installation data in the Active Directory does not match the required schema." I have tried two separate software packages and get the same error on the 2008 server. However, when I do the same on the 2003 server, it adds the software package without any problems. The .msi files I am using are up-to-date - one is the most recent version of Google Chrome. Is this problem caused by the different versions of the OS, or the Group Policy Management program? How do we "upgrade" our Active Directory to allow software deployment on the 2008 server? Thanks.
