• Access MacZFS via network from XBMC

  I have a ZFS RAID (zpool with three drives) hooked up to my Mac that I want to share in my LAN so that the XBMC client on my OUYA console hooked up to the television can read the drive and use it to stream my movies and television shows onto the television set. I've searched around for a bit but so far haven't found anything that helped me with it. I know that when connecting to the Mac with SSH I can't just access the drive due to different formatting. What do I have to do so that XBMC will be able to read it? How do I share it?

• how to protect php app (vbulletin) from hackers

  Our vBulletin system is under constant attack, raising cpu load and making the system very slow for legit users. The attack is a script type attack that is attempting to log in and/or create new login ids (mostly it is trying to create login ids in order to spam the site). In vBulletin, we have black listed large ranges of ips, which has helped a lot, but the attacks continue. Is there an automated way to protect the application or web server? ideally, the protection would detect the pages accessed and automatically black list the ip.

• sql server: losing identity column on export/import

  Recently I started dealing with SQL Server, my previous experience was in MS-Access. When I'm doing an import/export of a db, from the server to my computer or even in the server, all column with primary key loose the key. Identity is set to false and even bit is not set to the default. How can I can I use an import/export job to make an exact copy of the db and its data? I don't want to have to perform a backup and restore every time I want the same db somewhere else, for another project, etc. I have read about "edit mapping" and the checkbox but that did not helped with the identity specification... and what about the primary key of the tables and the rest of the things?

• Setting CPU cores off-limits to all threads not specified (preferably in Windows 7)

  I have a really specific machine configuration in the works that would really be helped out if there were any way to do this...basically what I'm looking for is the opposite of setting CPU Affinity for a process. I want to be able to tell Windows "No applications except [x] are allowed on [these cores]." Is there any mechanism whatsoever for doing this? (Yes, I am aware of some of the potential issues this could cause and I normally would never fool with processor affinities, since the OS usually does a damned good job itself, but this is a pretty odd situation involving some software that is very CPU-bound constantly having to wait on interrupts and DPCs and things from other threads.)

• Workgroup connection: You may not have permission

  I have two Windows XP computers connected through an Ad-Hoc network, computer A creates the network and B connects to it. Both computers are on the Mshome network and have file and printer sharing enabled, and they can ping one another through the adhoc network. The result is that computer A can see computer B, but B cannot see A in the workgroup. But when A tries to access B I get a "you might not have permission to access" error telling me to contact the administrator. I tries to google the error, but most posts talk about problems connecting different versions of Windows to each other. I tried turning off the firewalls on both machines and checking if the required services are running. Nothing helped. Please excuse my ignorance on Windows networking, I haven't used Windows in around 10 years.

• Squid gives always tcp_miss reverse proxy

  I added installed latest squid3 in front of apache as reverse proxy. The problem is that it gives always tcp_miss, in fact I have not yet found a single TCP_HIT message in the log file, and most of the content is static. Relevant config values for cache_dir and refresh_pattern are default ones, directory /var/spool/squid3 exists and has some files/folders. I have 100+G free storage, but reconfigure gives warning "WARNING cache_mem is larger than total disk cache space!", which does not make any sense to me. I have googled a lot and seen with similar problems, but none of them has helped.

• Apache not serving pages stored in Subversion repository

  I've setup Apache and Subversion on an old PC, but Apache is not serving pages correctly, when I enter the address to my test site: http://HOME_IP_ADDRESS/test/index.html I just get a File Not Found error and the following output in the error log: File does not exist: /var/www/html/svn/repos/test but I know the file exists, when I enter the following URL into the browser: http://HOME_IP_ADDRESS/repos/test/index.html I just get a listing of the HTML. In my Apache config file I have the Document Root set as follows: DocumentRoot "/var/www/html/svn/repos" so I'm not sure what is going on, I have SVN installed and I think it may have something to do this. Edit * I changed the Document Root location, which helped as pages in the new location were served correctly, so the problem is with just serving the pages from the repository.

• Forward name server for faster load times.

  I have a website hosted in China, which must be hosted there for various reasons. I also cannot change hosting companies for various reasons. It is a website that is accessed worldwide, however it has atrocious ping rates from everywhere but China. This is just an idea, so this may be impossible and/or not make any sense, but here it goes. A friend of mine has used proxies which helped his ping and load times from servers in Korea. Is there any way I can do this with my server? Perhaps a service which forwards my name servers to somewhere with much better global ping rates? Any other ideas which will make pings/load times fester other than this are greatly appreciated as well. Please keep in mind when answering: I cannot change servers I do not have access to configure the server itself.

  During recovery Oracle writes the following error: RMAN-06054: media recovery requesting unknown log: thread 1 seq 9 lowscn 4034762 I have used in mount mode this command: change archivelog all crosscheck; delete expired archivelog all; Then restore and tried to recover again:But still RMAN-06054 error.Than I wrote: run{ SET UNTIL SEQUENCE 9 THREAD 1; RESTORE DATABASE; RECOVER DATABASE; } It helped me to recover database...But after that when I do the backup and then recover the same error occurs and solution is the same... I wonder to solve this problem without SET UNTIL SEQUENCE 9 THREAD 1; maybe I should unregister this archive log from control file(I am using control file not catalog) Can you tell me how?

• Windows 7 system CPU bogged by windows services, no explanation

  I'm looking at a laptop for a colleague which is running terribly slow. A quick look showed that the CPU was 100% used by 2-3 SVCHost processes, which off course doesn't tell much since those are just 'cover' processes with services running underneath them. So I fired up process explorer in hopes of finding a shady rogue service which was bogging the system, but to my suprise I found genuine MS Windows processes (or at least damn-good disguised ones) are bogging down the system: dnscache (DNS Client) IKEEXT (IKE and AuthIP IPSec Keyring modules) iphlpsvc (IP Helper) Seen separately, these processes might seem odd to be using a lot of CPU, but taking a step back one can conclude that all three services are quite closely related to networking. I've tried running: netsh int ip reset log.txt which has helped me save bizarre network-related problems in the past, but this didn't help Off course I though about a virus, but both MS Security Essentials as well as malwarebytes (let both run a full scan).

• My CPU hits 100°C... Help me!

  The safe limit for processors is typically 50°C or so, but I have found that my CPU likes to do up to 100°C. I have got these readings from SpeedFan 4.42. I have a Intel Quad Core unclocked. I am using the standard intel fan with heatsink that came with the prossesor My case is a Cooler Master and I have two fans installed on the case. I took the side off to see if that helped. It lowered the temp be 3C. I don't really want to blow the processor and I don't know how to cool it down.

• How do you know which domain owns the hosting?

  For example if I have 1) host adress 2) login 3) password, I am entering by SSH on ruby on rails hosting, then how can i be sured that this hosting belongs to a specific domain? for example how can I know if www.site.com - belongs to some specific hosting to which I have access. I am asking this because I have access to hosting of ruby on rails, and when i modify files, there is no changes, i've tried to use the files "script", "serv", "restart.txt" - by ssh: touch tmp/restart.txt ./serv restart script restart nothing of the above helped...and I don't know what to do, any ideas?

• How to switch users without entering password, part II

  I've got Ubuntu 9.10 with a user account for my wife, and one for myself. "Wake-from-screensaver" should result in "choose user" without having to enter any password. I know how to do that in Windows, but I'm not good with Linux (yet). Part of this was answered in this question which helped me get past the login screen without passwords (after booting, and after choosing "switch user"), but once the screensaver kicks in and I wake it up again, the system does not present the "choose user" screen. Instead, it either turns off the screensaver and presents the desktop of the most recent user, or (if the screensaver is set to lock the screen) prompt for the user's password (which can be handily surpassed by clicking the "switch user" button and choosing the same user again). So, the login ("choose user") screen has been dealt with. How do I make the (any) screensaver return to the login screen at wake, rather than to the current user's desktop? Windows can do this, I'm sure Linux can too - but how?

• Keyboard no longer works when entering BIOS

  I am trying to boot from USB so I can install a couple different Linux distros. I can enter the BIOS, but as soon as I enter the BIOS the keyboard lights switch off (Num Lock and Caps Lock) and I cannot use the keyboard to do anything in the BIOS or even exit or restart the PC using Ctrl+Alt+Del or do anything at all with the keyboard. But as soon as I boot back into Windows, everything is fine... I've never had this problem before and some Googling hasn't helped. I've tried using a few other keyboards and simply unplugging/replugging the keyboards, but it didn't work. Is there anything I can do in Windows to maybe find out why the keyboard isn't working in the BIOS screen? In the Device Manager, all the drivers are up to date and there are no conflicts.

• Vista Home Premium won't connect to network.

  I deinstalled some software (e.g. some Toolbars for IE and Norton security suite, because the free trial period of 60 days is run out and so i want to switch to microsofts free security essentials). But now i cannot connect to the network again: Neither over LAN nor over WiFi. Neither with standard DHCP ON (sets a 169.254.x.y address) nor with fixed IP-Address. No error during changing the settings. Ping to the Gateway e.g. doesn't work and gives "generall failure". The DHCP-Client sets no IP-Address. There is allways only 'local access' on every network-connection. i ran out of ideas, please help. UPDATE per 2011-03-11: I followed each and every hint but nothing changed. I did a research on microsofts homepage through all the sites belonging to network but nothing helped. What can i do next?

• Nginx works on my linux machine but is not accessible from other computers in my local network

  In my LAN network I have a server with Scientific Linux (RedHat or Fedora based distro), I've done yum install nginx but the welcome page is not accessible from other computers in my network. When I do telnet open localhost 80 and then GET / HTTP/1.0 I get some html code from nginx, so it's running for sure. But when I want to connect remotly, doing telnet open 192.168.3.130 80 I get: Trying 192.168.3.130... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: No route to host So I assume that there is something wrong with my network settings, maybe iptables or something else? Next step, I turned off iptables: service iptables stop and it helped, now I can connect remotely using telnet. So I think, I need to fix my iptables rules. I did some googling and found this rule -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT but it still didn't allow me to connect remotely when iptables is up. Can someone please help me setting a proper iptables configuration?

• Asus Eee-PC 1015PEM

  My Asus worked perfectly until yesterday. I assume that the battery drained and AC was not plugged. I turned it on and doesn't chargeat all. It seems that something wrong with my battery. It works from AC but when it is plugged it shows only 4% available charging. When I unplug AC it shuts down right away. I already tried the 45 seconds holding power button method, and I uninstalled in device manager Microsoft ACPI-compliant Method Battery. Nothing helped. Does anybody has any idea?

• Is there a good way to prevent a server from emailing a specific address (we control both servers/apps)?

  When testing a production app we occasionally need to pull from a live site and perform tests on a development server. There are quite a few email addresses stored in the database that we need to modify every time we restore to the development server. Occasionally someone on my team will miss one and accidentally send an email through the distribution list. The email looks legit because it is coming from a clone, it can cause quite the situation. We have a protocol we follow every time we clone the live app and it has helped a lot but I would feel better if it was impossible for the two servers to communicate. Is there a good way to do this? Can firewall rules block email? Does Plesk have a blacklist?

• The volume "filesystem root" has only 0 bytes disk space remaining?

  I installed 11.10 ~two weeks ago and run into some strange troubles recently. Installation was on brand new laptop with clear 128GB SSD. I opted for encrypting home directory. Apart from that I accepted defaults during the installation. There is no other OS on my laptop. I had circa 40GB in use when (for the third time) I got to see this very unpleasant window: Twice situation was pretty bad and whole system slowed down considerably. After reboot I could not login to graphical interface (with an error message informing about insufficient space) and had to remove some files from command line first. Third time I still managed to quickly delete some files and it helped. My laptop is mainly work environment: so no torrents, games, just two movies. Only media filling space are ~20GB of pictures, and bunch of pdfs. Working mostly on PostgreSQL & PostGIS, GeoServer and QGIS recently. Although I had lots of opportunities to test and practice my backups I would be extremely grateful if somebody could point me to any potential solutions to this problem. My laptop has been bought just before I installed Ubuntu, and it came without OS. Could that be hardware issue? Or is the encrypted home causing me headaches? Thanks for help! • Book Review: &ldquo;Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2008: T-SQL Querying&rdquo; by Itzik Ben-Gan et al

  In the past few weeks, I have been reading “Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2008: T-SQL Querying” by Itzik Ben-Gan et al. In the next few lines, I will be providing a quick book review having finished reading this valuable resource on SQL Server 2008. In this book, the authors have targeted most of the common as well as advanced T-SQL Querying scenarios that one would use for development on a SQL Server database. Book content covered sufficient theory and practice to empower its readers to systematically write better performance-tuned queries. Chapter one introduced a quick refresher of the basics of query processing. Chapters 2 and 3 followed with a thorough coverage of applicable relational algebra concepts which set a good stage for chapter 4 to dive deep into query tuning. Chapter 4 has been my favorite chapter of the book as it provided nice illustrations of the internals of indexes, waits, statistics and query plans. I particularly appreciated the thorough explanation of execution plans which helped clarify some areas I may have not paid particular attention to in the past. The book continues to focus on SQL operators tackling a few in each chapter and covering their internal workings and the best practices to follow when used. Figures and illustrations have been particularly helpful in grasping advanced concepts covered therein. In conclusion, Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2008: T-SQL Querying provided me with 750+ pages of focused, advanced and practical knowledge that has added a few tips and tricks to my arsenal of query tuning strategies. • No Preview Images in File Open Dialogs on Windows 7

  I’ve been updating some file uploader code in my photoalbum today and while I was working with the uploader I noticed that the File Open dialog using Silverlight that handles the file selections didn’t allow me to ever see an image preview for image files. It sure would be nice if I could preview the images I’m about to upload before selecting them from a list. Here’s what my list looked like: This is the Medium Icon view, but regardless of the views available including Content view only icons are showing up. Silverlight uses the standard Windows File Open Dialog so it uses all the same settings that apply to Explorer when displaying content. It turns out that the Customization options in particular are the problem here. Specifically the Always show icons, never thumbnails option: I had this option checked initially, because it’s one of the defenses against runaway random Explorer views that never stay set at my preferences. Alas, while this setting affects Explorer views apparently it also affects all dialog based views in the same way. Unchecking the option above brings back full thumbnailing for all content and icon views. Here’s the same Medium Icon view after turning the option off: which obviously works a whole lot better for selection of images. The bummer of this is that it’s not controllable at the dialog level – at least not in Silverlight. Dialogs obviously have different requirements than what you see in Explorer so the global configuration is a bit extreme especially when there are no overrides on the dialog interface. Certainly for Silverlight the ability to have previews is a key feature for many applications since it will be dealing with lots of media content most likely. Hope this helps somebody out. • A whole site for reviewing of SQL Server MVP Deep Dives

  This book just keeps amazing me. Not only as I read through some chapters for the first time, and others for the second and third times, but also as I read reviews of it written by other people. The guys over at http://sqlperspectives.wordpress.com are a prime example. They’ve been going through each chapter, each writing a review on it, and often getting a guest blogger to write something as well – and they’re clearly getting a lot of stuff out of this brilliant book. Back when I first heard about them doing this, I had offered to be involved, and recently did an interview with them about my chapters (chapter seven and chapter forty). That interview can be found at http://sqlperspectives.wordpress.com/2010/03/20/interview-with-rob-farley/ – and covers how I got into databases, and how I think the database roles in the IT industry are changing. If you don’t have a copy of SQL Server MVP Deep Dives yet, why not get a copy from http://www.sqlservermvpdeepdives.com (or persuade your local bookstore to get some copies in), and read through chapters with these guys? Treat it like a book club, discussing each chapter with others (guest blogging perhaps?), and you’ll probably end up getting even more out of it. Remember that the proceeds of the book go to charity (instead of the authors – we get nothing), so you don’t need to consider that you’re splashing out on a treat for yourself.   As previously (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012) the time has come again to look back over the year’s activities on this blog, and as predicted there were 3 themes 1. It has been just 15 months since I changed role from what at Microsoft we call an “Individual Contributor” (IC) to a managerial role where ICs report to me. Part of being a manager entails sharing career tips with your team and some of those I have put up on my blog over the last year (and hope to continue to next year): Effectiveness and Efficiency, Lead, Follow, or Get out of the way, and Perfect is the enemy of “Good Enough”. 2. It has also been a 15 months that I joined the Visual Studio Diagnostics team, and we have shipped many capabilities in Visual Studio 2013. I helped the members of my team blog about every single one and create videos of many, and then I created a table of contents pointing to all of their blog posts, so if you are interested in what I have been working on over the last year please follow the links from the master blog post here: Visual Studio 2013 Diagnostics Investments.
