• Opensource showcase for MVC in Java Swing

  I've allready created small desktop CRUD applications using Java/Swing. In hindsight I'm not quite sure if the overall design of these applications is good. I've also done some reading on MVC and looked at different Swing-tutorials. My problem is, that I've got a very theroatical knowledge of MVC and on the other hand, most Swing-resources don't implement the MVC-pattern. Now I would like to get my hands dirty and see how MVC is implemented in Swing in a real-world-application. Are there any opensource project you could recommend? It would be also interesting to have more than one project, to see different approaches. Best fit would be a software, that uses a relational database in the backend, to see an overall design, that I can compare to my former applications.

• IT Optimization Plan Pays Off For UK Retailer

  I caught this article in ComputerworldUK yesterday. The headline talks about UK-based supermarket chain Morrisons is increasing their IT spend...OK, sounds good. Even nicer that Oracle is a big part of that. But what caught my eye were three things: 1) Morrison's truly has a long term strategy for IT. In this case, modernizing and optimizing how they use IT for business advantage. 2) Even in a tough economic climate, Morrison's views IT investments as contributing to and improving the bottom line. Specifically, "The investment in IT contributed to a 21 percent increase in Morrison's underlying profit.." 3) The phased, 3-year "Optimization Plan" took a holistic approach to their business--from CRM and Supply Chain systems to the underlying application infrastructure. On the infrastructure front, adopting a more flexible Service-Oriented Architecture enabled them to be more agile and adapt their business and Identity Management helped with sometimes mundane (but costly) issues like lost passwords and being able to document who has access to what. Things don't always turn out so rosy. And I know it was a long and difficult process...but it's nice to see a happy ending every once in a while.

• Allow user to SUDO a script without password.

  I have a php script with this: <?php #echo exec('whoami'); $output = shell_exec('bash /usr/local/svn/bash_repo/make-live'); echo "$output"; ?> The make-live script contains this: #!/bin/bash cd /var/www-cake sudo svn checkout file:///usr/local/svn/bash_repo/repo/ echo "Head revision has been pushed to live server" So the PHP user who is www-data needs to have nopasswd for that script. I am told I need to add: www-data ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/local/svn/bash_repo/make-live To sudoers to allow this. First I run sudo visudo but I have no experience with vi so I try to open it in gedit with export EDITOR=gedit && sudo -E visudo which then just opens a sudoers.tmp file which is empty. I add the line and save it. But it doesn't do save. So I just try sudo visudo and I add the line right beneath this part: # User privilege specification root ALL=(ALL) ALL www-data ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/local/svn/bash_repo/make-live I closed out sudoers and reopened to verify that it has saved. I even restart apache. I run the php file and it still doesn't work. What am I missing?

• Issues with ILMerge, Lambda Expressions and VS2010 merging?

  A little Background For quite some time now, it’s been possible to merge multiple .NET assemblies into a single assembly using ILMerge in Visual Studio 2008.  This is especially helpful when writing wrapper assemblies for 3rd-party libraries where it’s desirable to minimize the number of assemblies for distribution.  During the merge process, ILMerge will take a set of assemblies and merge them into a single assembly.  The resulting assembly can be either an executable or a DLL and is identified as the primary assembly. Issue During a recent project, I discovered using ILMerge to merge assemblies containing lambda expressions in Visual Studio 2010 is resulting in invalid primary assemblies.  The code below is not where the initial issue was identified, I will merely use it to illustrate the problem at hand. In order to describe the issue, I created a console application and a class library for calculating a few math functions utilizing lambda expressions.  The code is available for download at the bottom of this blog entry. The MathLib.dll assembly was built in release configuration and copied to the MathLib folder.  The following folder hierarchy was used for this example:   The project file for ILMergeLambdasConsole project file was edited to add the ILMerge post-build configuration.  The following lines were added near the bottom of the project file:  <Target Name="AfterBuild" Condition="'$(Configuration)' == 'Release'"> <Exec Command="&quot;..\..\lib\ILMerge\Ilmerge.exe&quot; /ndebug /out:@(MainAssembly) &quot;@(IntermediateAssembly)&quot; @(ReferenceCopyLocalPaths->'&quot;%(FullPath)&quot;', ' ')" /> <Delete Files="@(ReferenceCopyLocalPaths->'$(OutDir)%(DestinationSubDirectory)%(Filename)%(Extension)')" /> </Target> The ILMergeLambdasConsole project was modified to reference the MathLib.dll located in the MathLib folder above. ILMerge and ILMerge.exe.config was copied into the ILMerge folder shown above.  The contents of ILMerge.exe.config are: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> <requiredRuntime safemode="true" imageVersion="v4.0.30319" version="v4.0.30319"/> </startup> </configuration> Post-ILMerge After compiling and building, the MathLib.dll assembly will be merged into the ILMergeLambdasConsole executable.  Unfortunately, executing ILMergeLambdasConsole.exe now results in a crash.  The ILMerge documentation recommends using PEVerify.exe to validate assemblies after merging.  Executing PEVerify.exe against the ILMergeLambdasConsole.exe assembly results in the following error:    Further investigation by using Reflector reveals the divisibleBy method in the MathHelpers class looks a bit questionable after the merge.     Prior to using ILMerge, the same divisibleBy method appeared as the following in Reflector: It’s pretty obvious something has gone awry during the merge process.  However, this is only occurring when building within the Visual Studio 2010 environment.  The same code and configuration built within Visual Studio 2008 executes fine.  I’m still investigating the issue.  If anyone has already experienced this situation and solved it, I would love to hear from you.  However, as of right now, it looks like something has gone terribly wrong when executing ILMerge against assemblies containing Lambdas in Visual Studio 2010. • Podcast: Dell Perot Systems Relies on Oracle In-Memory Database Cache

  Recently we spoke with Bill Binko, Technology Consultant at Dell Perot Systems, about a high volume web-based content delivery system they implemented for a client with Oracle In-Memory Database Cache. Their client needed to respond to ~1 billion hits (web requests) per day, but hadn't been able to support this load. Oracle In-Memory Database Cache allowed for multiple & complicated queries to take place without ever hitting the disk...providing sub-millisecond response time and ability to manage much higher high volumes of data. Old System: Old SQL Server Database, over 300 servers, difficult to maintain. New System: One Oracle Database 11g instance, multiple Oracle RAC nodes, backed up by Oracle Data Guard, and Oracle In-Memory Database Cache to cut query response times by 10x. • Shotwell issues in 11.10

  I had used Shotwell happily previously then updated to Natty last week. Despite Shotwell showing on the tool bar on screen, when clicked, nothing happened, and it ignored my SD card when loaded. I read all sorts of remedies and tried everything to no avail. When I next turned on the laptop, Ocelot was available so with nothing to loose, I upgraded again. Still no Shotwell. Tried all the new fixes and now atleast I have the icon pictures but nothing behind it. When I ran the command to load the log file, Shotwell loaded and all my photos are present. Exited programme, and now nothing. Can anyone tell me where I have gone wrong please.

• How can I get shockwave flash to work on Ubuntu 12.04

  I've tried most of the things suggested on this site and others so far. It's kind of frustrating because this is a home computer and I mainly use it for browsing the internet and watching YouTube videos. When I try to install something that might fix it, it just downloads a bunch of files and says to extract them or whatever. I'm not sure what to do with the files after I extract them. That's probably the main issue: I don't have a lot of experience working with computers at this level. I'm used to Windows, which seems to make most software installs idiot-proof. Any suggestions are appreciated!!

• Where is a good place to start to learn about custom caching in .Net

  I'm looking to make some performance enhancements to our site, but I'm not sure exactly where to begin. We have some custom object caching, but I think that we can do better. Our Business We aggregate news stories on a news type of web site. We get approximately 500-1000 new stories per week. We have index pages that show various lists of the items and details pages that show the individual stories. Our Current Use case: Getting an Individual Story User makes a request The Data Access Layer(DAL) checks to see if the item is in cache and if item is fresh (15 minutes). If the item is not in cache or is not fresh, retrieve the item from SQL Server, save to cache and return to user. Problems with this approach The pull nature of caching means that users have to pay the waiting cost every time that the cache is refreshed. Once a story is published, it changes infrequently and I think that we should replace the pull model with something better. My initial thoughts My initial thought is that stories should ALL be stored locally in some type of dictionary. (Cache or is there another, better way?). If the story is not found, then make a trip to the database, update the local dictionary and send the item back. Since there may be occasional updates to stories, this should be an entirely process from the user. I watched a video by Brent Ozar, How StackOverflow Scales SQL Server, in which Brent states "the fastest database query is the one that you don't make". Where do I start? At this point, I don't know exactly what the solution is. Is it caching? Is there a better way of using local storage? Do I use a Dictionary, OrderedDictionary, List ? It seems daunting and I'm just looking for some good starting points to learn more about how to do this type of optimization.

• Java Not Recognized As Default Application

  I just installed java according to this article, and 'java -version' displays java version "1.7.0_07" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_07-b10) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.3-b01, mixed mode) 'update-alternatives --config java' returns this: There are 2 choices for the alternative java (providing /usr/bin/java). Selection Path Priority Status ------------------------------------------------------------ 0 /usr/bin/gij-4.6 1046 auto mode 1 /usr/bin/gij-4.6 1046 manual mode * 2 /usr/local/java/jdk1.7.0_07/bin/java 1 manual mode Press enter to keep the current choice[*], or type selection number: with update-alternatives --config javac (or javaws) returning similarly. however java isn't listed in the default applications menu when I click on a .jar file and go to "open with application". I tried to install java this way, and on the update-alternatives part of the command returned me: /etc/alternatives/[java,javac,javaws] is dangling, it will be updated with best choice I just confirmed that I can use java, as 'java -jar file.jar' does work. Just figured that I'd mention it, don't know why I didn't before, but when I right click on a .jar file, java 7 run-time isn't even listed there, it seems that the file-manager isn't recognizing it as a program, but it is there, and it does work...

• Do most programmers cut & paste code?

  I learned very early on that cutting & pasting somebody else's code takes longer in the long run that writing it yourself. In my opinion unless you really understand it, cut & paste code will probably have issues which will be a nightmare to resolve. Don't get me wrong, I mean finding other peoples code and learning from it is essential, but we don't just paste it into our app. We rewrite the concepts into our app. But I'm constantly hearing about people who cut & paste, and they talk about it like it's common practice. I also see comments by others which indicate it's common practice. So, do most programmers cut & paste code?

• Remote Display Config.sh Using SSH

  How often I see people look to VNC, NXMachine, RDP, etc to get a windowing environment on a remote system.  These products are great and I use them too, but there is a fancy feature in SSH to help. ssh –X remoteserver This is a great feature for hooking into headless VirtualBox machines and remote displaying an install wizard. The remote server must have some lines put in the /etc/ssh/sshd_conf file: X11Forwarding yes X11DisplayOffset 10 The second line is optional, but the first is required.  Restart sshd (sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart). Now I can ssh –X remote server Then run /opt/app/wls10.3.4/wlserver_10.3/common/bin/config.sh to build a new domain. Note: For some reason, the jdk that comes with WebLogic often fails to work on the remote display.  In that case, I modify the config.sh to just use /usr/bin/java (from openjdk-6-jre package).
