• Should I worry about DDMS console log messages "Can't bind to local nnnn for debugger"?

  I'm new to Android programming (and Eclipse IDE and Android emulator). I've got Hello World and some of Notepad working, but I'm still constantly getting quite a few DDMS console log messages (shown below) about not being able to bind locals for debugger. Is this a problem? Can I get rid of these messages somehow? • Force Windows Local Subnet Traffic through a Gateway

  Hi all, We are attempting to route all traffic from a certain machine to a gateway. This works ok for traffic destined for subnets outside of the machine's subnet. However, traffic to machines in the same subnet as the source machine goes through an On-Link gateway in Windows. This means that the default gateway is ignored, and traffic in a subnet (for example, 192.168.50.10 - 192.168.50.11) flows. Destination Netmask Gateway Interface Metric 192.168.50.0 255.255.255.0 On-link 192.168.50.214 276 This route can be deleted from Windows, but when the machine is rebooted it always comes back. Adding a persistant static route to the gateway with a lower metric doesn't work, since it will still try the On-Link gateway after the persistant route fails. Adding each machine in a VLAN isn't an option due to the setup we have Adding a startup script to delete the gateway isn't a great option either, since users will have full admin access to the machine and might disable the script. We cannot transperantly intercept all network traffic on the subnet using Gratuitous ARPs or transparent proxying, since there are other machines on the subnet which use a different gateway The only way we have gotten it to work is by adding a persistant route to the gateway for the subnet traffic, and deleting the On-link route on reboot. The question is then. Is there a way to permanently remove this On-link route If not, is there a way to otherwise force even local subnet traffic to go through a gateway?

• OSX: Python packages fail to install, error message "/usr/local/bin: File Exists"

  I keep trying to install django and other python packages, and I keep getting the exact same error message: Installing django-admin.py script to /usr/local/bin error: /usr/local/bin: File exists So I look to make sure that my /usr/local folder is okay. At first glance it appears okay, until I try cd-ing into my bin. It says it can't because it's not a directory. Peculiar, I thought, so then I tried a Anchorage:local khotchkiss$ ls -a -l total 26168 drwxr-xr-x 6 root wheel 204 Dec 26 20:18 . drwxr-xr-x@ 14 root wheel 476 Feb 24 12:54 .. -rwxr-xr-x@ 1 root wheel 13395080 Oct 22 23:04 bin drwxr-xr-x 8 root wheel 272 Dec 26 20:18 git drwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 136 Dec 18 11:31 include drwxr-xr-x 12 root wheel 408 Dec 18 11:31 lib And haven't a clue of what the 'bin' is, why its so large, and why its preventing me from installing python packages. Any clue?

• Assigning static IP and domain name mapping to local server in LAN

  I have developed a web application which will be deployed in a LAN environemnt. Clients will be Computers/Android Tablets/IPAD In order for communication between client and local server 1) need to assign a static IP to local server. 2) need a domian name mapping for that IP address in Local environment. 3) router should assign the same static IP if it gets restarted etc. I am using a windows XP machine as Local server OS. Do i need to take care of router configurations before buying one, or all routers will have same capability to perform this task. Am I missing something or is this just not possible with this control? Thanks

• Copying 500GB Data to EC2 Instances Local Drive

  Please do not ask me why (they made me) but I have to copy 500GB data to the local drive every 200 node/instances that I am launching in EC2. For reasons beyond this post, this data must by on the local drive and not EBS drive so I can not benefit from snapshots. What is the fastest way that I can manage to this? Copying from S3 to each node takes a long time. I trying to attached an EBS volume to every node with the data and then copy the data from EBS to the local drive but that also take a long time (several hours_) Now, I am also thinking to use bit torrent but not sure how well it is going to be. What is the best way to copy 500GB of static data to each local drive of 200 ec2 instances? The 500Gb of data is composed several hundred of file with varying size but the biggest file is 20GB.

• VPN Connects with local access only

  I have Windows Server 2008 and I have set up a VPN. When a user logs into their VPN they can not view the internet. It comes up as local access only on the the client PC. On the server when I go to the Network And Sharing Centre it displays (Network) with local and internet below it has the RAS Dial-in interface and it displays as local only there as well. I want all users that connect to my VPN to have internet access (full access). If anyone can help me it would be appreciated. Also I've activated dial-in properties and I've done it via policy who can access the VPN and internet. It still doesn't work, but there is a connection but just local only. Thanks

• Vista WHS Client stopped resolving local names

  I’m running Windows Home Server PP2 in my home, with 3 client computers: two XP and one Vista. I have a router that provides my local DHCP and the server has a static IP address. The other day the Vista machine hung, and on reboot stopped resolving local names. It will show the green home server client icon in the system tray, but if I attempt to log in to the console, I get a “This computer cannot connect to your home server” message. If I ping the server name from the command line, it does not resolve, and gives a “could not find host” message. Oddly enough, if I browse the network, I can see the server, but double clicking on it fails. The other machines on the local network have no problems seeing the server, and the Vista machine has no problems resolving names from the internet, it just can’t see any local machines. I’m aware that I can work around this by adding entries to my HOSTS file (it does work), but I’d like this to work the way it’s “supposed” to. I’m an experienced computer user and developer, but not a networking whiz. Can anyone tell me how local name resolution is supposed to work in my environment and/or suggest ways to troubleshoot this?   This was originally a question, but is now a code enhancement, since it's a very minor (but useful) update. When heading (or other) text is used as a link with sIFR 3, you now get the two 'open link / open link in new window' options in the right-click flash context menu for the link. When I came across sIFR for the first time yesterday, I was wanting to copy a header (h2) link to the clipboard, on a site that used sIFR 2.x, and was frustrated that I couldn't. • Can TP-Link router make phone calls?

  I have a TP-Link router with DSL service provided by a local company which serves it over the landline phone. My landline cord is plugged into an ethernet router which is then plugged into TP-Link wireless router. I can access internet with this wireless router all over my home with all computers. Landline Cord [into] Ethernet Router [into] TP-Link Wireless Router [air] Computers I would add that landline cord is also into a phone device which I use to make calls and that's not cordless. Now I am accessing internet via WiFi on my laptop and want to ask if is this possible to make landline calls via this same computer I am surfing internet through? What I am asking it to a dial-up via TP-Link router that goes through landline. You see the landline cord is the actual data gateway and is also used to make calls. So it can simultaneously send Data and Voice over the same wire.

Also, this could be a good community wiki, I think. Well, what I am asking for, is: what are pros and cons of different methods to sharing files ofver local network? In my case, I need to share files between Linux & Win 7, and I want it to be secure (= without access for anyone else but me & people in my room). Another question (connected with above topic) is about playing music over the local network. Let's say, I live with 2 other guys in a room, one of us have speakers and we want to collaborate in creating playlists (e.g. everyone is choosing 3 songs to be played). Is it possible? How to do this? I am asking this question on SuperUser, because it (question) is connected with hardware & software (network, connecting computers, software for managing playlists in network etc.). I think it is most accurate place for such question (I have considered SO and SF). [1] And I have already done this!   I just ran the Homebrew script as described in the installation page. I then ran brew doctor in Terminal, and it returned several errors. I'm not sure how to fix those errors, please help. brew doctor Error: Some directories in /usr/local/share/man aren't writable. This can happen if you "sudo make install" software that isn't managed by Homebrew. If a brew tries to add locale information to one of these directories, then the install will fail during the link step. You should probably `chown` them: /usr/local/share/man/de /usr/local/share/man/de/man1 Error: You have Xcode 4.2, which is outdated. Please install Xcode 4.3. Error: Unbrewed dylibs were found in /usr/local/lib. If you didn't put them there on purpose they could cause problems when building Homebrew formulae, and may need to be deleted.   How can I reset local CRL (in OS local cash) in Windows OS (XP, Windows 7) manual? We need to reset local CRL because otherwise the OS will use local CRL until "next update" period. As described in "Manually publish the CRL": Clients that have a cached copy of the previously-published CRL or delta CRL will continue using it until its validity period has expired, even though a new CRL has been published. Manually publishing a CRL does not affect cached copies of CRLs that are still valid; it only makes a new CRL available for systems that do not have a valid CRL.

• CentOS 6 - YUM Local Repo - Ensure consistent package distribution

  I've read a few guides outlining how to setup a local YUM repo, but none of them explicitly stated an answer to my question; If I set up a local YUM repo, does that mean that any CentOS servers which pull from said repo will never be "ahead" of the local YUM repo? I want to ensure a consistent package distribution across all my servers. Right now, when I do a yum update, even on a daily basis, the servers can be out of alignment. For example if I run YUM update on my dev server in the morning, then run YUM update on one of my production servers in the afternoon, the production server may have picked up a new version of a package that the dev server did not pick up, due to the time window between the update commands. Rather, I'd prefer that I run yum update from my dev server which has access to remote upstream yum repos, then let it sit for 2 weeks, after which I run yum update on my production servers against the local repo on my dev server.

• trying to understand how Linux /etc/hosts file works with local and external IP addresses

  Let's say I have a Linux server with an external IP of 123.456.789.012 and a local IP of 192.168.0.1. If it's /etc/hosts file looks like, for example, 123.456.789.012 host2.mydomain.com 192.168.0.1 host2.mydomain.com When an application on the server generates traffic to send using host2.mydomain.com, how does the server know whether to use the local or external IP address (since the same host name shows two IP addresses)? Or, does it need something additional than what I've presented here to decide this? Or, does it just sent it out as host2.mydomain.com and let the receiving end deal with it (if so, how to make sure traffic intended for local network indeed goes to local network)?

• Set up multiple websites on a local web server

  I have spent the last few days setting up a CentOS 6 server on my local network so that I can host multiple projects that I'm currently working on. Everything has been set up so that I access the server by typing 192.168.1.10 and the Apache test page comes up. What I'm aiming to do is to access different projects by typing in 192.168.1.10/project, and then view the project as if it was on it's own standalone server. I have thought about just sticking these sites inside folders on the server then accessing them that way, but a lot of my projects use CakePHP so this isn't feasible. So what I need to do is create VirtualHosts in Apache to allow me to do this, but without using a domain name. I want to stick to using the IP address of the machine (which is static). Any ideas? EDIT I've followed Peter's suggestion, but now I have a new problem. In the httpd.conf file I have entered the following information: NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot /www/html/project1 ServerName local.project1.com ErrorLog logs/local.project1.com-error_log CustomLog logs/local.project1.com-access_log common </VirtualHost> And now Apache is saying: Starting httpd: Warning: DocumentRoot [/www/html/project1] does not exist When it clearly does exist. I've disabled SELinux and I can confirm this isn't turned on. I've also checked the ownership of the folder, and its owned by root. I can also save files to these folders using a guest FTP account (which isn't associated to root), so the folders are being listed and can be written to. But when I try the folder in a web browser it doesn't seem to work either. I've also done a reboot of the server and the problem persists. What should I change in order to resolve this?

  nixcraft has a tutorial on configuring memcached server(link) at the end says: For busy memcached server you need to increase system file descriptor and IP port limits here is the code to do so: # Increase system IP port limits net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range = 2000 65000 why should we do this? memcached is a server and it will respond to clients with its listening port which is 11211 by default. So we shouldn't be limited by local port range.(net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range) The only limit is file descriptors. local port range should be a limit for servers like squid which generate local traffic

• HTML link over text issue

  I need to add a link over the entirety of a div which contains some more divs. Looks like this: div.top { width: 150px; height: 150px; position: relative; } a.link { width: 150px; height: 150px; position: absolute; top: 0; } <div class="top"> <div class="text1">Text 1</div> <div class="text2">Text 2</div> <a class="link" href="http://something"></a> </div> So I put a link inside and made it the size of the top div. Everythign works fine in Firefox, Safari and Chrome. In IE and Opera, whenever I hover mouse cursor over that area but also over a text, the cursor is changing to selection cursor, not a hand (meaning no link). Whenever I move the cursor off the text, the link is available again. How can I make the link to "cover" the text completely? I tried adding z-index: div.top { z-index: 0; } a.link { z-index: 1; } doesn't help. Any ideas?
