• What is a good Very-High level UI framework for JavaScript?

  I need to write a temporary Web-based graphical front-end for a custom server system. In this case performance and scalability aren't issues, since at most 10 people may check the system simultaneously. Also it should be PHP or Python (server) & JavaScript (client) (can't use Flex or Silverlight for very specific non-programming related issues). So I know I could use YUI or jQuery, but was wondering if there is something even more high-level that would say allow me to write such a little project within a few hours of work, and get done with it. Basically I want to be as lazy as possible (this is throw-away code anyways) and get the job done in as little time as possible. Any suggestions?

• Why is floating point byte swapping different from integer byte swapping?

  I have a binary file of doubles that I need to load using C++. However, my problem is that it was written in big-endian format but the fstream operator will then read the number wrong because my machine is little-endian. It seems like a simple problem to resolve for integers, but for doubles and floats the solutions I have found won't work. How can I (or should I) fix this? • DCVS + hosting for a startup commercial multiplatform phone app

  I'm in lean startup mode, working on a simple phone app that will be published initially as a iThingy app and an Android app with, possibly, Blackberry and Symbian versions to follow. I'm about to go from no repository to needing a central repository that up to 4 very part-time resources will be sharing. Two of us have no version control background, one has used Subversion, and I've used most of the major centralized VCS systems. I'm not going to be pushing the technical limitations of any VCS for a long time; I'm sure that any of the major systems would work fine. And the hosting accounts I've looked at seem reasonable. So I'm really focussed on minimizing the downside risks. That is, I'd like to find a stable setup that is easy to learn in general, easy to use from Windows/Eclipse, and won't paint me into any obvious corners for the next 12 months or so. A quick search of the web had led me to consider the following pairs of DVCS and hosting service, with what I think I'm hearing as their strengths and weaknesses (for my purposes): Bazaar/Launchpad -- My initial choice since I need to get more familiar with this pair for the Google Summer of Code mentoring I'm doing. But, whatever the technical merits, a non-starter for me because they are purely open source, no private repositories plans to purchase that I can see. Git/GitHub -- Git: Fast, light, ultimately flexible, but relatively less Windows friendly, Eclipse plugin (eGit) available but relatively young, GitHub: widely used, pricing is fine Mercurial/BitBucket -- Mercurial: a little less flexible, a little more Windows friendly, Eclipse plugin seems a bit more mature, BitBucket: widely used, pricing is fine, includes a wiki and an issue tracker that we might be able to use instead of something like BaseCamp, at least for a while. Mercurial/BitBucket seem like the winning pair so far for my particular situation; at least two of us are definitely going to be working mostly from Eclipse on Windows and reducing my own learning curve is a priority. ;-) But I have two specific questions: 1) Am I wrong about Bazaar/Launchpad and is there a viable, secure way to use them for proprietary code? 2) Any reason to think that the Mecurial/Bitbucket pair will end up being a headache for my Mac developer, soon, or for Blackberry or Symbian developers a little later? ag

• What would you suggest as a high school first language?

  Edit by OA: After reading some answers I'll just update the question a little. At first I put it a little bluntly, but some of those gave me some good arguments which have to be taken into consideration while making a stand on this one. (these are mostly picked up from comments and answers below). A few things to take into account: to many pupils this is a first programming language - at this stage most of them have trouble grasping a difference between data types, variable passing, ... and whatnot, less alone pointers and similar 'low level stuff' :) they will all have to pass this to get into next grade (well, big majority of them anyway) not all of them have computers at home, not all of them are willing to learn this, less alone interested in - so the concepts have to be taught on a finite time scale in school hours (as well as practice on computers) free literature is a bonus - the teacher will make some scripts and handaways, but still ... I wouldn't like to bear the parents with the burden of buying expensive literature (also, english is not a native language here ... and although they are all learning it, their ability to read it fluently is somewhat questionable) somebody gave an argument - "a language which does not get in the way of ideas" - good one accessibility on different platforms in not expecially important at this point - although most of the suggested ones are available on win as well as linux - not many macs in this part of europe (their prices are sky high for anything but specialised usage) I will check what are the licencing issues on ms express editions about using it massively in high schools for purposes like this - if someone has any info about this, please, do not be shy with it :) A friend of mine, informatics teacher - in EU it comes as something as junior cs teacher, in a local high school asked me what I thought about what should be the first language pupils should be taught? It is a technical school (a little more oriented towards mathematics than the gymnasium, but not computer oriented totally). So I'm asking you - what do you think should be the first language pupils are exposed to in highschool? They have been teaching Pascal so far, but she's not sure that's a good course. She thought about switching to C (which I resented; considering not all pupils have interests in programming, to start with, and should be taught something higher level since they are just gripping the idea of a loop and such ... for a start), I suggested python or ruby (preferably py since it handles all paradigms). What is your opinion on this one? I looked, but didn't find a similar question on SO, so if there is one, please just point me towards it.   Hi All, I want to use Validation Controls but I dont want them to show their Error Messages when invalid data exist. Instead I'm going to iterate through the validation controls and show error messages inside my little ErrorMessage Control for (int i = 0; i < Page.Validators.Count; i++) { if (!Page.Validators[i].IsValid) { divAlert.InnerText = Page.Validators[i].ErrorMessage; return false; } } I'm doing this because i have little space to show the error message. You can ask why are you using validation control if you dont want to show them My asnwer is "I use them for validation logic they handle" I looked the properties of the validation controls and cant find something that wil help me doing this. • Asp.net Site on GoDaddy Loads Slowly

  I just published a very small site to GoDaddy that I programmed in Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008. The site only contains 6 sheets, none of which are data intensive. Each has a few small images that serve mostly to navigate to the other sheets. There is no data, no SQL, nothing like that. There is one master page that governs the page layout for all of the pages. Everything works fine, for the most part. I am posting because the site loads quite slowly, particularly considering how little content is being loaded. Can anybody give me any advice about what I should look at to speed this thing up a little bit? Is this an asp.net issue? Use of master pages? Godaddy? Something else? I'm a newbie, so speak slowly. • Customising Symfony Admin Generator Form

  Hi, I've generated the backend of my application, and am now just 'jazzing' the forms up (adding correct labels, validation rules etc). One thing I'd like to do is add a map (Google) which updates the marker as an address is entered into the form, then allows the user to drag it to correct the lat/lng should it be a little off. My question is, how can I customise the output of the form - I've read the docs (1.0,1.1,1.2 also) and it all seems very confusing. Customising forms not generated with the admin generator I know how to do using renderRow(); etc; but finding a way to add a little bit of HTML to the forms is making my eyes hurt! There's so much out of date stuff on the web regarding Symfony it's hard to know what to trust! If anyone can point me in the right direction that'd be great. Best Regards, Rich

I am to work with one application that is having operations like PDF loading,annotation, scrolling,zooming and other such functions. Now my question is that i am little bit confused about what template i should use as i went through Quartz 2D Programming Guide and was little bit confused whether i'll be able to apply the above shown functions with the same guideline,as it displays the pdf page on the whole screen.   Hello I have a question for a c programmer out there, we have a tast at school to create a soft real time system in an operation system made by our teacher. Well that is all fine and dandy, we have chosen to create a system that calcuate how many unites of medicine a diabetic need based on his or hers blood sugar. It does not need to be correct just that we have the idea of a real time system :D But we have hit a little snag our formula for calculating the units of medicine is [blood sugar] * 1.2 But the only way we can send messages between processes is via a structure that contains 8 longs, but here is where my knowledge of c ends, we need for some way to split this double into 2 longs, example: the whole number in long 0 and the decimals in long 1 and then assemble it on the other side. But I have no idea who to do this, and therefore need a little help. We have tried but we do not have access to c standard libraries

I wanna get some data from oracle server like: 1-get all the function,package,procedure and etc for showing them or drop them & etc... 2-compile my *.sql files,get the result if they have problem & etc... becuz I was beginner in oracle first of all I for solve the second problem I try to connect to sqlPlus by RUN sqlplus and trace the output(I mean,I change the output stream of shell and trace what happend and handle the assigned message to customer. NOW THIS PART SUCCEED. just a little bit I have problem with get all result because the output is asynchronous.any way... [in this case I log in to oracle Server by send argument to the sqlplus by make a process in c#] after that I try to get all function,package or procedure name,but I have problem in speed!so I try to use oracle.DataAccess.dll to connect the database. now I m so confusing about: which way is correct way to build a program that work like Oracle Developer! I do not have any experience for like these program how work. If Your answer is I must use the second way follow this part plz: I search a little bit the Golden,PLedit (Benthic software),I have little bit problem how I must create the connection string?because I thinking about how I can find the host name or port number that oracle work on them?? am I need read the TNSNames.Ora file? IF your answer is I must use the first way follow this part plz: do u have any Idea for how I parse the output?because for example the result of a table is so confusing...[i can handle & program it but I really need someone experience,because the important things to me learn how such software work so nice and with quick response?] All of the has different style in output... • Date Input in safari

  So I am using the HTML5 date input type, primary to trigger the 'wheels' in iOS. Everything is working fine in ie7-9 Chrome and FF. But Safari for OSX is very upset. It sees the need to add little 'up and down' buttons to the right hand side and generally mess up my visual stylings. My attempt to fix this, is to change the date inputs back to text inputs for desktop browsers, and leave it as date inputs for mobile: unless device.is # 'device' is a lib I use to detect mobile browsers dateFields = $ 'input[type="date"]' dateFields.attr 'type', 'text' #this fails dateFields.datepicker() dateFields.on 'keyup', (e) -> e.preventDefault() $(@).val '' Beyond altering the input type with js, I am at a loss for how to fix this little bugger. • Resolving Assemblies, the fuzzy way

  Here's the setup: A pure DotNET class library is loaded by an unmanaged desktop application. The Class Library acts as a plugin. This plugin loads little baby plugins of its own (all DotNET Class Libraries), and it does so by reading the dll into memory as a byte-stream, then Assembly asm = Assembly.Load(COFF_Image); The problem arises when those little baby plugins have references to other dlls. Since they are loaded via the memory rather than directly from the disk, the framework often cannot find these referenced assemblies and is thus incapable of loading them. I can add an AssemblyResolver handler to my project and I can see these referenced assemblies drop past. I have a reasonably good idea about where to find these referenced assemblies on the disk, but how can I make sure that the Assmebly I load is the correct one? In short, how do I reliably go from the System.ResolveEventArgs.Name field to a dll file path, presuming I have a list of all the folders where this dll could be hiding)?

  Hi, Using an Oracle temporary table does not generate much redo log as a normal table. However, the undo log is still generated. Thus, how can I write insert, update, or delete statement on a temporary table but Oracle will not generate undo log or generate as little as possible? Moreover, using /+append/ in the insert statement will generate little undo log. Am I correct? If not, could anyone explain me about using the hint /+append/? INSERT /*+APPEND*/ INTO table1(...)   hi guys, somehow there are really little tutorials out there for html5 video and audio playback. I simply want to embed video and audio files with customized controls. However the controls should be farely simple. I only need a play-button. If clicked, play gets replaced by pause. that's all! however i even don't know how to embed/display a video without "preload controls". Somehow if i only set (without preload controls) Firefox even don't shows anything. Chrome does show a black window. I would love to be able to use jquery to control the video play and pause button. Maybe you have some little start-approach for me! thank you very much!

• Django: Extending User Model - Inline User fields in UserProfile

  Is there a way to display User fields under a form that adds/edits a UserProfile model? I am extending default Django User model like this: class UserProfile(models.Model): user = models.OneToOneField(User, unique=True) about = models.TextField(blank=True) I know that it is possible to make a: class UserProfileInlineAdmin(admin.TabularInline): and then inline this in User ModelAdmin but I want to achieve the opposite effect, something like inverse inlining, displaying the fields of the model pointed by the OneToOne Relationship (User) in the page of the model defining the relationship (UserProfile). I don't care if it would be in the admin or in a custom view/template. I just need to know how to achieve this. I've been struggling with ModelForms and Formsets, I know the answer is somewhere there, but my little experience in Django doesn't allow me to come up with the solution yet. A little example would be really helpful!

• What technologies are appropriate for a human workflow system?

  I'm researching various workflow architectures and it is overwhelming. The workflow system I am creating will be almost completely human-driven. Very little, if any, asynchronous activity will be taking place. One possibility is to simply use a RDBMS and have a task table, from which stored procedures would be used to enforce synchronous access to each task. This seems very simple, but I'm having a hard time coming up with reasons why I might need to involve a heavier solution. If my system has ~500 concurrent users, and there is very little in the way of automated or asynchronous tasks, should I even consider the various workflow patterns/packages out there like Mule, BPEL/SOA, Spring Work Flow, etc?

I already wrote me a little program to find and load all html files, but now I am stuck at how to extract src, title and alt from the html < img src="/image/fluffybunny.jpg" title="Harvey the bunny" alt="a cute little fluffy bunny"/ I guess this should be done with some regex, but since the order of the tags may vary, and I need all of them, I don't really know how to parse this in an elegant way (I could do it the hard char by char way, but thats painful).

• Interview Question: .Any() vs if (.Length > 0) for testing if a collection has elements

  In a recent interview I was asked what the difference between .Any() and .Length > 0 was and why I would use either when testing to see if a collection had elements. This threw me a little as it seems a little obvious but feel I may be missing something. I suggested that you use .Length when you simply need to know that a collection has elements and .Any() when you wish to filter the results. Presumably .Any() takes a performance hit too as it has to do a loop / query internally.

• External GUI/Helper Library for Visual C++?

  I am looking for some kind of library, either open source or bought in, that provides advanced GUI components, helper functions & classes etc. It needs to be something that integrates relatively easily into Visual Studio, and should be based around C++ and Windows. Cross platform isn't needed, and can somtimes make things a little more complex and restricted than single platform, but it is still acceptable. It also needs to be up-to-date and active. There appears to be a number of 'retired' libraries that offer little or no support, so these would not be suitable, as I'm going to need help every now and then! It also needs good documentation. I know about wxWidgets but I'm wondering what other alternatives there are? At first glance, wxWidgets doesn't strike me as what I want/need, especially in the GUI area where the visual components seem striking similar to the stock components. I want more custimization! Is there much out there that meets these requirements?
