• Display continious dates in Pivot Chart

  I have a set of data in a pivot table with date times and events. I've made a pivot chart with this data, and grouped the data by day and year, then display a count of events for each day. So, my horizontal axis goes from 19 March 2007 to 11 May 2010, and my vertical axis is numeric, going from zero to 140. For some days, I have zero events. These days don't seem to be shown on the horizontal axis, so 2008 is narrower than 2009. How do I display a count of zero for days with no events? I'd like my horizontal axis to be continuous, so that it does not miss any days, and every month ends up taking up the same amount of horizontal space. (This question is similar to the unanswered question here, but I'd rather not generate a table of all the days in the last x number of years just to get a smooth plot!)

• R scatterplot overplotting color

  So far I have this: qplot(df[[1]], as.numeric(rownames(df)), group=df[[2]], color=df[[2]], ylab="") I want to use different colors for the points in the 2 groups - perhaps a lighter shade for the what's in black now and a darker - say, red for what's in blue. Also, I want to use hexbin kind of thing for group=0 but not for group=1. I'm not able to get the syntax to get this working. In the current plot 0 is in black and 1 is in blue. Added: I worked on it some more, and by using factor and scale_colour_manual, I got the grey color for 0 and red for 1: > palette1 [1] "grey" "red" "blue" "violet" "black" fy=factor(y, labels=c('grey', 'red')) qplot(x, seq(1:length(x)),col=fy, ylab="") + geom_point() + scale_colour_manual(values=palette1) Pending questions are: How to first plot all the grey and then red on top (some of the red is now hidden because the grey is plotted over).   What is the best way for converting phone numbers into international format (E.164) using Java? Given a 'phone number' and a country id (let's say an ISO country code), I would like to convert it into a standard E.164 international format phone number. I am sure I can do it by hand quite easily - but I would not be sure it would work correctly in all situations. Which Java framework/library/utility would you recommend to accomplish this? P.S. The 'phone number' could be anything identifiable by the general public - such as * (510) 786-0404 * 1-800-GOT-MILK * +44-(0)800-7310658 that last one is my favourite - it is how some people write their number in the UK and means that you should either use the +44 or you should use the 0. The E.164 format number should be all numeric, and use the full international country code (e.g.+44)

• How to use jquery .animate() to mock 'text-align:right'

  I am building a very simple jquery menu. On hover, I have a menu on the right easing to the left margin of my menu container. This is easy, as the text is left aligned within said container. However, I also have a menu on the left, and because the links (left justified) are of differing length, the best I can do is adjust the padding to ease the text a uniform amount between links. Therefor, long link text goes to the right edge of the container, buy short text only makes it about half way. In reading about this, I have learned that you can not modify the text align property as it is non numeric. Is there any other way to do this? I of course tried to go with: $('#selector').css('text-align':'right') but that made the text jump to the right instead of ease. Is there any way to ensure all links ease to the rightmost margin of the container?

• Writing a script for reading many .csv files with similar filenames

  I have several .csv files with similar filenames except a numeric month (i.e. 03_data.csv, 04_data.csv, 05_data.csv, etc.) that I'd like to read into R. I have two questions: Is there a function in R similar to MATLAB's varname and assignin that will let me create/declare a variable name within a function or loop that will allow me to read the respective .csv file - i.e. 03_data.csv into 03_data data.frame, etc.? I want to write a quick loop to do this because the filenames are similar. As an alternative, is it better to create one dataframe with the first file and then append the rest using a for loop? How would I do that?

  I would like to find a numeric representation of kazakh national ornaments for generating new ones. The ornaments essentially consist of combinations of relatively basic ornaments. Usually the ornaments are symmetrical. Here are few examples of basic elements: (The images are a bit distorted) And this is an example of a more complex ornament: How could I encode an ornament's representation in as few numbers as possible? So that I could write a program that would generate an ornament, given some sequence of numbers Any ideas are appreciated. As I write this, I have thought that generating images of snowlfakes may be somewhat relevant, although it's possibly just a fractal.

How to get elements from numeric indices 0-n? Also if I change 'string_index' to something else which doesn't exist, it echoes everything except [0]. Plz, explain me this. Thnx in advance

  Hi, I have 2 textboxes and a label on my page. The 2 textboxes will contain numeric values. The label text will be the product of the 2 textbox values. Is there a way to do this using JQuery so that the value can get updated without having to do a postback? Also the textboxes may contain values with commas in it: e.g. 10,000.   I’m in the process of cleaning up a database table. Due to the way some of the data needed to be processed, now I need to go back and perform a “reverse lookup” on the data. For example, a field for one of the records is set to “car” and I need to set that record’s tranportmode field to “1” (for “car”). The lookup tables are already created. I just need to do the reverse lookup part. The cleansed tables will only have the numeric lookup value.

The exact number/type/names of these data points can change depending on the source of the database writes. I would like to create a user interface editor, where the user can add database points to the UI and arrange them and format them as they want. If a new point is added to the database they can right click on the UI and say "add this point" and choose from a list of database points. I'm looking for some pointers on where to start on creating this editor application, could something clever be done using XAML to dynamically create std WPF controls at runtime? • Regex if-else expression

  I'm trying to extract the # of minutes from a text field using Oracle's REGEXP_SUBSTR() function. Data: Treatment of PC7, PT1 on left. 15 min. 15 minutes. 15 minutes 15 mins. 15 mins 15 min. 15 min 15min 15 In each case, I'm hoping to extract the '15' part of the string. Attempts: \d+ gets all of the numeric values, including the '7' and '1', which is undesirable. (\d)+(?=\ ?min) get the '15' from all rows except the last. (?((\d)+(?=\ ?min))((\d)+(?=\ ?min))|\d+), an if-else statement, doesnt' match anything. What is wrong with my if-else statement?

• String formatting [str.format()] with a dictionary having a key which is a str() of a number

  Python neophyte here. I was wondering if someone could help with the KeyError I am getting when using a dictionary for string interpolation in str.format. dictionary = {'key1': 'val1', '1': 'val2'} string1 = 'Interpolating {0[key1]}'.format(dictionary) print string1 The above works fine and yields: Interpolating val1 However doing the following: dictionary = {'key1': 'val1', '1': 'val2'} string2 = 'Interpolating {0[1]}'.format(dictionary) print string2 results in: Traceback (most recent call last): File "test.py", line 3, in <module> string2 = 'Interpolating {0[1]}'.format(dictionary) KeyError: 1L So the problem seems to be in the interpretation of the numeric key as a list index, IMHO. Is there any way to work around this? (i.e. convey that this is instead a dictionary key) TIA and apologies if this question has been asked before(couldn't find anything relevant with my search-fu).

• What is the purpose of AnyVal?

  I can't think of any situation where the type AnyVal would be useful, especially with the addition of the Numeric type for abstracting over Int, Long, etc. Are there any actual use cases for AnyVal, or is it just an artifact that makes the type hierarchy a bit prettier? Just to clarify, I know what AnyVal is, I just can't think of any time that I would actually need it in Scala. When would I ever need a type that encompassed Int, Character and Double? It seems like it's just there to make the type hierarchy prettier (i.e. it looks nicer to have AnyVal and AnyRef as siblings rather than having Int, Character, etc. inherit directly from Any).

Basic math: 949324-937796=11528. Numeric values are stored as number datatypes. What am I missing here?

  I need to periodically update a local cache with new additions to some DB table. The table rows contain an auto-increment sequential number (SN) field. The cache keeps this number too, so basically I just need to fetch all rows with SN larger than the highest I already have. SELECT * FROM table where SN > <max_cached_SN> However, the majority of the attempts will bring no data (I just need to make sure that I have an absolutely up-to-date local copy). So I wander if this will be more efficient: count = SELECT count(*) from table; if (count > <cache_size>) // fetch new rows as above I suppose that selecting by an indexed numeric field is quite efficient, so I wander whether using count has benefit. On the other hand, this test/update will be done quite frequently and by many clients, so there is a motivation to optimize it.

• Delphi Volume control by keyboard

  Hi All, I recently had to replace a keyboard and this one ( GE 98552 ) does not have programmable buttons along the top and I miss the up/down volume buttons. it has 9 special buttons but none for volume and this model is not programmable. DUH! I am a long-time Delphi programmer but never messed with the multimedia stuff. Can anyone suggest some code to assign to say the "+" and "-" keys on the numeric pad that will change the volume up and down? I never use those two buttons so I would not be giving up functionality. Assume that it is a square matrix: all rows have the same length and there are as many rows as elements in each row. Also assume that the matrix is at least of dimension 2 by 2 (i.e. minimally the matrix has 2 rows with 2 elements each) The function should return a list with as many elements as number of rows. Element i in the resulting list should have the sum of the values in row i. For example, if the matrix is 1 2 3 10 20 30 100 200 300 then this function should return the list [6,60,600] That is, addValuesInAllRows( [ [1,2,3], [10,20,30], [100,200,300] ] ) should return [6,60,600] Isn't this sort of similar but how would you sum up the list individually

• how to visualize (value, count) dataset with thousands data points

  I have a file with 2 numeric columns: value and count. File may have 5000 rows. I do plot(value, count) to find the shape of distribution. But because there are too many data points the picture is not very clear. Do you know better visualization approach? Probably histograms or barplot with grouping close values on x axis will be the better way to look on data? I cannot figure out the syntax of using histogram or barplot for my case.

• How do I get the Apple Wireless Keyboard Working in 10.10?

  So I've gone and bought a Magic Mouse and Apple Wireless Non-Numeric Keyboard. The magic mouse worked out-of-the-box almost perfectly, except for the forward/back gesture which still isn't functioning, whereas the keyboard didn't. It has constant trouble with the bluetooth connection. Only the 7, 8 and 9 buttons and volume media keys correspond correctly with the output. Pressing every single key on keyboard has this output: 789/=456*123-0.+ When I use Blueman the keyboard can be setup and shows up in "Devices" but I get a warning when I click "Setup"; "Device added successfully, but failed to connect" (although removing the keyboard and setting it up as a new device doesn't incur this error). Using gnome-bluetooth I have encountered no error messages but it connects properly less often than Blueman and I can still only type the aforementioned output. What am I not doing? Where is this going wrong? EDIT: I have read this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=224673 inside out several times to no avail. It seems these commands don't work for me with the apple peripherals sudo hidd --search hcitool scan Fortunately I have the luxury of a 1TB hard drive, near limitless patience and no job. I have installed a fresh Ubuntu 10.10 64bit (albeit smaller than mine) and after updating and restarting for the first time, I set up my devices in exactly the same way as I have learnt on my original install I succeeded once again with the mouse and, to my joy, with the keyboard also. Though I could not seem to find Alt+F2 and had to reconfigure that and several other keyboard shortcuts, the keyboard is working and in a spectacular fashion. Still, this leaves me with the issue of my original install. I returned to it with some new found knowledge but failed again. Perhaps I have a missing dependancy? I did uninstall bluetooth after the initial set up and reinstalled it recently for the pupose of these peripherals. Maybe it's because I'm running 64bit? This is still not solved, but easily avoided by not changing too much from the original install. Just hide stuff or turn it off, don't uninstall too much.

• Android app to remote control Samsung Smart TVs

  Smart TV Remote is an unofficial Android app that lets you control Samsung Smart TVs connected over a local WiFi network. This app comes very handy when you want to control your TV which is not in line of sight of your TV remote control or just want to use your mobile phone/tablet to control the TV. Setting up a TV  is very easy using auto scan feature . Once the TV is setup, you are all set to start using the app as a remote control. A traditional remote controls makes use of infra red technology and it needs to be in the line of sight of the TV receiver to work. But this app make use of WiFi technology which give it flexibility of controlling the TV as long as the mobile & TV is connected to WiFi network. It just works even if the TV is behind a wall. The App provides very easy to use options to switch between channels and separate remotes with media controls, smart hub features and a numeric key pad if you want to navigate to a channel through its number. The App also provides a home screen widget with volume controls and channel navigation options. I use  this App to control Samsung E Series Smart Tv at home and it works very well. I’m impressed by the ease at which it allows to setup a TV, support for multiple TVs, controlling the TV though I’m not in the line of sight and using volume buttons of smart phone to control volume of TV. What’s annoying and missing with the app As advertised the app works very well in controlling Samsung TVs (B-, C-, D- E-, and F-Series) except it is very painful to move mouse pointer while browsing web on TV. When you try to move mouse pointer using the App, it mouse painfully slow especially. I gave us using the app to control mouse pointer after trying couple of times. I installed this App thinking that it may help me browse web on Smart TVs, especially a key board support to type web urls. App does not supports entering text either while browsing web or searching through Smart TV apps like YouTube, App Store etc. Developers of this App never advertised keyboard support so no complaints about this. But it would be very helpful if the developers allow this app use as a keyboard and rescue me from the pain of typing text using TV Remote control.
