• Win2008 DC in a Windows 2000 domain: can I keep the old DC?

  Will be putting a new Windows 2008 SE Server into a single domain network with two domain controllers, both running Windows 2000 Server. The functional level of the domain is mixed mode/2000. Until a second 2008 DC can be purchased, I'd like to leave the current Win2k operational master DC as a backup DC as the other member servers running 2003 have either accounting/SQL or Exchange on them. Eventually all the w2k servers will be decommissioned, but until then, I need another DC for redundancy. Following the standard process for adding a new DC, can I leave the old operational master DC (or the other backup DC) running after I transfer the FSMO roles to the new server? Will this cause any issues?

• How to OCR PDF files with Old German Gothic (Fraktur) text?

  I have been successfully using Adobe Acrobat X to OCR many scanned documents which I use for my research. However I have begun studying old German documents which use the Fraktur script, also known as Gothic. SuperUser won't let me post an image of it, but you can find examples of what it looks like in the Wikipedia article (linked above). I have read about special programs which OCR the text, such as ABBY FineReader für Fraktur, but first it works on Windows (and I use a Mac), and second I'd like to find a Fraktur plugin for Acrobat to fit into my already-existing workflow. Are there any Fraktur OCR plugins for Acrobat? Generally, where should one look for Acrobat OCR plugins?

• How can I combine code from an old revision when I didn't branch in TortoiseMerge?

  I need to combine (merge?) some parts of an old revision with a newer revision of a file. I'm still pretty new to subversion, so I'm not sure what I'll bomb in the process. I did not branch--these are simply different revisions of a file. How do I send the sections of code from r1 to r3 where they are needed. The keyboard shortcuts and menu options for "theirs", "mine", "left block", "right block", etc aren't very intuitive. If I need 5 blocks from r1 to be after the first 10 blocks of r3, how do I do it? Shouldn't I be able to go through r1 block by block and decide if and where it belongs in r3? Thanks in advance!

• Tool that automatically keeps old versions of a file? Shadow Copy in Win7?

  When I'm working with a Graphics App, I press CTRL+S a lot to Quicksave. Sometimes, I just went too far and made a bad decision, sometimes to the point Undo wouldn't help either. I would love to retain old versions of a file. Normally, Source Control would be of use here, but that's a manual process (same as just making some copies). I wonder if there is an automatic way to do that? Everytime the file changes, keep a backup. I believe that in Windows Server, Shadow Copies can do that. When I check in my Windows 7 (Ultimate), I do see "Previous Versions" as a tab, but that seems to be part of the backup function which is once again manual. Is there a way to get that type of automatic versioning?

• Why does the command forfiles list files that are not a day old despite the command being otherwise?

  The command I am executing is forfiles -p"C:\testdata" -m*.* -d-1 -c"cmd /c echo @PATH\@FILE" I have specified that I wish to only list files that are a day old however when I execute the statement, it returns me a list of files that were created today. Why is that? Am I doing something wrong? Would it be better to specify a time period as opposed to a date e.g. 24 hours? The version of forfiles I have reads as follows FORFILES v 1.1 - [email protected] - 4/98. The batch file is being run on Windows XP.

• How can I connect to some old Sun servers?

  We have some old Sun servers (V125, V210, V240, T2000 amongst others) sitting unused and I've been asked to find out if there is anything useful on them before they get wiped and disposed of. However, I've been unable to connect to any of the servers. I tried connecting the servers to a router using the Net Management, Serial Management and standard Ethernet ports. When doing this, I ran 'nmap -sP' from my Linux desktop before and after connecting a server so I could compare the two outputs and hopefully work out what IP address had been assigned to the server, but it didn't appear to have received one. Unfortunately only one of the servers has a VGA output. I was able to access this machine as we still have the login details stored in KeePass, but I've no idea at the moment on how I should go about connecting to any of the others. Any suggestions?

• Why aren't my old DLL's running with my app pool in 32bit mode?

  I am moving my websites from a server 2003x86 environment to a server 2008x64. the 2008 server is using iis 7.5 and the app pool I am using is configured for 32bit mode. I get an error 'Server object error 'ASP 0177 : 800401f3' Server.createObject failed.' I beleive that it is in the DLL's that all the ASP sites point to. My programmers, as usual, say it isn't code or the DLL's. Am I missing something to make these old DLL's work? By the way these sites are connecting to a SQL 2000 Database.

  With htaccess I'm trying to make my sites urls clean. I use very basic urls like: www.mysite.com/pagename.php ("pagename" is variable). • How to update debian dns server? New VM with same hostname as old VM

  We run several linux VM's on our Hyper-V cluster. Our old IT manager configured the dns server to resolve the url 'devlabs.ourdomain.com' to a debian squeeze apache webserver hosted on the hyper v cluster with the hostname: devlabs. We recently created a new Ubuntu vm to replace the original squeeze vm. When we created the new Ubuntu VM we used the same hostname of 'devlabs" to name the new VM. My problem is that now I am only able to access the new Ubuntu VM by using the IP address. How can I update our DNS server to point the url 'devlabs.ourdomain.com' to the new VM?

• How can I improve the rendering performance of this old DOS application?

  I have very old DOS Application (CadSoft Eagle - PCB Designer) and I want to work with it on my workstation with Windows 7. Then I install Windows 98 and that software into VmWare Player. But that software has serious problem with redrawing screen. It's very slow in comparison with my Intel Celeron 333MHz with Windows 98. I have same problem if I try to use DOSBox on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz). I also trying run this application directly on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz) with compatibility mod set to "Windows 98", but I get "(0Dh): General Protection Fault". Can someone give me good advice how I solve that?

• View old Inbox messages in (OS X) Mail.app via Exchange IMAP?

  We're thinking of migrating our Mac users away from Entourage 2008 and instead using Mail.app (built into OS X Snow Leopard). We're running SBS 2003 so it's Exchange 2003 for now. When I setup an "Exchange IMAP" Mail account for a user, their Inbox shows up as empty. However, all of their other folders appear to be populated with their existing email correctly. New email shows up correctly in their Inbox. What do you have to do to see all of the old messages already in the Inbox? Thank you.

• Do old package versions in CentOS mean that they do not have security fixes?

  We asked our admin to update SVN on our CentOS 6.5 server. He did so and the result was SVN 1.6.11. However the current version of SVN is 1.8.9. I know the CentOS yum repository is not always up-to-date. But in that case I am confused: SVN 1.6.x is not officially supported anymore. This means it does not get any security fixes! How can the official CentOS repository provide such an old (and dangerous) version? Is there something we (or our admin) understood the wrong way?

  Has anyone ever used their old Sony Handycam (or maybe any older hand-held camcorder) as a web cam? As in streaming the live video from the cam to a web server (local or remote/Internet). My TRV815 has a pretty darn good picture quality for its time.. Via USB or Ethernet. It has S-Video but I think that is input. It has RCA out (white/red for audio and yellow for video) and I have used that to display to my TV. I have web cams already but was wondering if I could put this one to use also just for kicks..

• How should a one-man development shop document their code?

  Hi, please let me first describe my situation. I work in an IT department for a small-to-medium sized industrial-company and basically I'm the only real developer (sometimes a second guy joins in for his own projects). I programm mostly in C#/.net. Of course I only programm for internal need (Intranet, reporting, data-driven apps, some mobile apps, ...). My question is how should I document my work? It's a highly dynamic environment (the features and bug fixes I implement are tested by me during production, and go live, often within a day. If I technical documentation like MSDN or even overview diagramms those would take me more time to sync than the whole programming process. Also I feel it's a waste of time because I would be the only one who ever read it. I do understand that if I get sick, leave, or forget this documentation would be valuable. PS:well of course you are right - the quesion is how much and how/where. I try using the XML-docu comments for the public exposed parts but as I'm a believer in self-documenting code the comments mostly restates in plain text what you can read from the method-head itself :(Maybe using the remarks section is the key but if you have 30 lines of code with a 15 line xml-comment in front it just looks dirty (sorry for posting it here but our firewall rejects JSON :( )

• Why are there so many man-made edge cases in IT, and is there any hope for simplification / unificat

  This question is meant to generate discussion and so it is marked as community wiki. My observation is that the field of information technology grows so rapidly and randomly, that for many it takes a lot of time to learn many intricacies of some tools that will be obsolete in just short 3 years. If you look at the questions asked on StackOverflow ... at least half of them stem from the fact that some language / tool / API / protocol was poorly designed, is backwards and has gotchas. There are so many things which distract developers from converting English into machine code; instead they spend their time configuring stuff and gluing together things that do not really fit. How many times do you pick up somebody else's project (or someone picks up yours :) ) and realize that this program does not need half of the dialogs that it has, and that the logic can be simplified a great deal? But, it had to be made and sold here before a better thing is made and sold elsewhere, and hence all this rush. I often wish that things would just slow down. I do not want Microsoft Windows to run on my car's computer, my watch, my table, my toaster oven, and my toilet seat. I'd rather have Windows that DOES NOT HAVE WINDOWS REGISTRY, I'd rather have Windows that allows two different programs to work on the same file at the same time, the way it works on Unix systems. Microsoft is just an example. I am looking forward to the day when I do not have to worry about Windows vs Unix new line break, when System32 actually means that this directory contains 32-bit binaries, and not 64-bit ones, the day when dll hell and manifest hell are no longer an issue, the day when it takes me a lot less than 3 months on a new job to learn the system. I do not mean learning the entire code base of a product (depending on the size of it, it can take a long time). I mean - remembering which build-assisting scripts are written in Perl and which version of it, and which ones are done through .bat files, when do I need to manually make every file in some directory writable before running a script, or else a critical step of a database maintenance home-grown tool will bomb, and it will take 2 days to clean that up. Makes me wonder if humans enslaved computers, or if it is the other way around. The key is that improving those things will not bring extra revenue, and hence those taking the time to fix crap like that are not "business focused". However, these imperfections irritate me immensely, particularly because my memory is limited - I can hold only a small portion of that useless knowledge of a system in my head at any given point in time. I must not be alone. Did you also happen to notice that a programmer can waste a lot of time on things that should have been a lot more straight-forward? Is there hope? Will things get better/simpler in the future, or will there be a lot more IT crap floating around? I suppose I see diversity of tools, protocols, etc. as a bad thing. Thank you for participation.

• RPC Fails but passing in SQL Man. Studios works

  I am calling a stored procedure from a web service in an ASP.Net application. And until a few days ago, all was well. However now when i call it I get an error saying The timeout period elapsed prior to the completion of the operation or the server could not be reached. However when i would run SQL SERVER PROFILER, I could see that the call was getting to the database, but was timing out. I then copied the statement being executed found at the bottom of the Profiler and pasted it into Management Studio and executed it and it finishes in about 7 seconds.. This runs just fine on our production server. It seems to be similar to this question: SELECT DISTINCT not working in .NET application, but works in SQL Mgmt Studio but I see no answer.

I'd like to "break" out of the if conditions as soon as I know that something changed. Is there a way to do this within a MySQL Trigger? What I have works, but It seems inefficient. • Should I create a new window or modify the old one?

After the form is filled in and the "Submit" button is pressed I would like to have a new window. I see two potential ways to do it: Close the "old" window and open a "new" one. Remove "old" elements from the existing window and put there "new" elements. What is the standard way to go? If it is the first way, what is the command to close the window? If it is the second one, how can I remove elements from the existing window?

• LINQ und ArcObjects

  LINQ und ArcObjects Motivation LINQ1 (language integrated query) ist eine Komponente des Microsoft .NET Frameworks seit der Version 3.5. Es erlaubt eine SQL-ähnliche Abfrage zu verschiedenen Datenquellen wie SQL, XML u.v.m. Wie SQL auch, bietet LINQ dazu eine deklarative Notation der Problemlösung - d.h. man muss nicht im Detail beschreiben wie eine Aufgabe, sondern was überhaupt zu lösen ist. Das befreit den Entwickler abfrageseitig von fehleranfälligen Iterator-Konstrukten. Ideal wäre es natürlich auf diese Möglichkeiten auch in der ArcObjects-Programmierung mit Features zugreifen zu können. Denkbar wäre dann folgendes Konstrukt: var largeFeatures = from feature in features where (feature.GetValue("SHAPE_Area").ToDouble() > 3000) select feature; bzw. dessen Äquivalent als Lambda-Expression: var largeFeatures = features.Where(feature => (feature.GetValue("SHAPE_Area").ToDouble() > 3000)); Dazu muss ein entsprechender Provider zu Verfügung stehen, der die entsprechende Iterator-Logik managt. Dies ist leichter als man auf den ersten Blick denkt - man muss nur die gewünschten Entitäten als IEnumerable<IFeature> liefern. (Anm.: nicht wundern - die Methoden GetValue() und ToDouble() habe ich nebenbei als Erweiterungsmethoden deklariert.) Im Hintergrund baut LINQ selbständig eine Zustandsmaschine (state machine)2 auf deren Ausführung verzögert ist (deferred execution)3 - d.h. dass erst beim tatsächlichen Anfordern von Entitäten (foreach, Count(), ToList(), ..) eine Instanziierung und Verarbeitung stattfindet, obwohl die Zuweisung schon an ganz anderer Stelle erfolgte. Insbesondere bei mehrfacher Iteration durch die Entitäten reibt man sich bei den ersten Debuggings verwundert die Augen wenn der Ausführungszeiger wie von Geisterhand wieder in die Iterator-Logik springt. Realisierung Eine ganz knappe Logik zum Konstruieren von IEnumerable<IFeature> lässt sich mittels Durchlaufen eines IFeatureCursor realisieren. Dazu werden die einzelnen Feature mit yield ausgegeben. Der einfachen Verwendung wegen, habe ich die Logik in eine Erweiterungsmethode GetFeatures() für IFeatureClass aufgenommen: public static IEnumerable GetFeatures(this IFeatureClass featureClass, IQueryFilter queryFilter, RecyclingPolicy policy) { IFeatureCursor featureCursor = featureClass.Search(queryFilter, RecyclingPolicy.Recycle == policy); IFeature feature; while (null != (feature = featureCursor.NextFeature())) { yield return feature; } //this is skipped in unit tests with cursor-mock if (Marshal.IsComObject(featureCursor)) { Marshal.ReleaseComObject(featureCursor); } } Damit kann man sich nun ganz einfach die IEnumerable<IFeature> erzeugen lassen: IEnumerable features = _featureClass.GetFeatures(RecyclingPolicy.DoNotRecycle); Etwas aufpassen muss man bei der Verwendung des "Recycling-Cursors". Nach einer verzögerten Ausführung darf im selben Kontext nicht erneut über die Features iteriert werden. In diesem Fall wird nämlich nur noch der Inhalt des letzten (recycelten) Features geliefert und alle Features sind innerhalb der Menge gleich. Kritisch würde daher das Konstrukt largeFeatures.ToList(). ForEach(feature => Debug.WriteLine(feature.OID)); weil ToList() schon einmal durch die Liste iteriert und der Cursor somit einmal durch die Features bewegt wurde. Die Erweiterungsmethode ForEach liefert dann immer dasselbe Feature. In derartigen Situationen darf also kein Cursor mit Recycling verwendet werden. Ein mehrfaches Ausführen von foreach ist hingegen kein Problem weil dafür jedes Mal die Zustandsmaschine neu instanziiert wird und somit der Cursor neu durchlaufen wird – das ist die oben schon erwähnte Magie. Ausblick Nun kann man auch einen Schritt weiter gehen und ganz eigene Implementierungen für die Schnittstelle IEnumerable<IFeature> in Angriff nehmen. Dazu müssen nur die Methode und das Property zum Zugriff auf den Enumerator ausprogrammiert werden. Im Enumerator selbst veranlasst man in der Reset()-Methode das erneute Ausführen der Suche – dazu übergibt man beispielsweise ein entsprechendes Delegate in den Konstruktur: new FeatureEnumerator( _featureClass, featureClass => featureClass.Search(_filter, isRecyclingCursor)); und ruft dieses beim Reset auf: public void Reset() {     _featureCursor = _resetCursor(_t); } Auf diese Art und Weise können Enumeratoren für völlig verschiedene Szenarien implementiert werden, die clientseitig restlos identisch nach obigen Schema verwendet werden. Damit verschmelzen Cursors, SelectionSets u.s.w. zu einer einzigen Materie und die Wiederverwendbarkeit von Code steigt immens. Obendrein lässt sich ein IEnumerable in automatisierten Unit-Tests sehr einfach mocken - ein großer Schritt in Richtung höherer Software-Qualität.4 Fazit Nichtsdestotrotz ist Vorsicht mit diesen Konstrukten in performance-relevante Abfragen geboten. Dadurch dass im Hintergrund eine Zustandsmaschine verwalten wird, entsteht einiges an Overhead dessen Verarbeitung zusätzliche Zeit kostet - ca. 20 bis 100 Prozent. Darüber hinaus ist auch das Arbeiten ohne Recycling schnell ein Performance-Gap. Allerdings ist deklarativer LINQ-Code viel eleganter, fehlerfreier und wartungsfreundlicher als das manuelle Iterieren, Vergleichen und Aufbauen einer Ergebnisliste. Der Code-Umfang verringert sich erfahrungsgemäß im Schnitt um 75 bis 90 Prozent! Dafür warte ich gerne ein paar Millisekunden länger. Wie so oft muss abgewogen werden zwischen Wartbarkeit und Performance - wobei für mich Wartbarkeit zunehmend an Priorität gewinnt. Zumeist ist sowieso nicht der Code sondern der Anwender die Bremse im Prozess. • How long should I keep 301 redirecting pages from a deprecated domain?

  I had an old domain that I have deprecated, but 301 redirected all results from it to my new site. The new site is now receiving a decent amount of traffic, but I don't know if it's 301 redirected from the old site, and doing a site:[old site] still shows several thousand pages indexed. Since all pages from the old site are 301 redirected, will they ever be removed from the index, as long as the old domain name is active? As a rule of thumb, somewhere I got 90 days for any significant site changes. When is it safe to burn the old domain?
