• IOS SDK : first advices for beginners

  I too often answer the same kind of questions regarding basic topics like memory management, UITableView, Interface Orientation, MVC, etc... I understand very well that everyone starting with that SDK is too exited about getting its hand on it but a few reading would save them hours of debugging and the frustration that come along with the feeling that "We miss something here". I'd like experience users to share the few small articles, white papers, docs, book chapters that helps other save their time and avoid frustration. My first vote would be for : IOS Memory Management Guide View Controller Programming Guide Table View Guide And as a General recommendation, read the Overview section that come along with every class documention in the reference library, they contains most of what you need to know to avoid big traps !

• Correct structure and way of website versioning

  Recently I use GIT to version my website. It makes it all really easy to see how my project develops and I always have save backups on different places on the web. Now my main question is if it is recommended to version your whole root of the website. I have a basic structure that looks something like this: /httpdocs /config /media /application index.php .htaccess 1) Should I use the /httpdocs folder to version, or should I use the content of the folder. 2) Is it recommended to version the media folder. In the media version I have several images for the overall layout, and some other images for the website. These imagas can be quite large. I work on these images from time to time and so they change. I hardly never need the old image again, so is this not just taking up precious storage space. I would highly appreciate just some basic recommendation on this topic.

• Does introducing foreign keys to MySQL reduce performance

  I'm building Ruby on Rails 2.3.5 app. By default, Ruby on Rails doesn't provide foreign key contraints so I have to do it manually. I was wondering if introducing foreign keys reduces query performance on the database side enough to make it not worth doing. Performance in this case is my first priority as I can check for data consistency with code. What is your recommendation in general? do you recommend using foreign keys? and how do you suggest I should measure this?

• android, find the nearest location without going through all the locations

  I am building a taxi dispatching app first: I need the passenger app to show the nearest taxis, now I know how to do that in code but in my way I have to go through all the taxis locations(in database on server) and calculate the distance from the passenger location and get the lowest ones - I don't want to do this because there will be a lot of taxis and going through all of them and making some math is kind of pain on the server- is there a way to get the nearest ones without going through all of them? second: what the best database to use - first, should it be sql or non-sql - I need a very robust database, because there will be a lot of updates (I mean the passengers locations added then deleted when arriving to destination && the taxis location changes frequently) finally: I will use RubyOnRails to do the server side and json as data transfer format, do you have a recommendation to me on something better?   I finally decide to give a source control a try with my existed project (since I will be hiring another new developer soon). I am pretty new to this area and I need recommendation which Source Control should I use to fix my current project. I am developing Web Application which dealing with large number of pictures. Currently, we have over 500,000 pictures (large size picture and several thumbnails). I am using PHP which is not what I concern (since it is just only hundred of script files). My major concern is with the large amount of picture. NOTE: I just install VisualSVN. What do you think about SVN. Do you think it will fix to my requirement?

  Recently I looked at a module on CPAN that comes with a script to be installed which made me wonder. What is the recommended way to include a script in a package that should end up on the public CPAN and if there is any different recommendation for packages that would be released on an in-house CPAN server? The script starts like this: #!/usr/bin/perl eval 'exec /usr/bin/perl -S $0 ${1+"$@"}' if 0; # not running under some shell Two questions Do I understand correctly the eval part is unnecessary? That will be embedded by the CPAN client during installation and it will be very different when installing on Windows. What is the recommended sh-bang line?   This question is not about 'best' barcode library recommendation, we use various products on different platforms, and need a simple way to verify if a given barcode is correct (according to its specification). There are some free online bar code generators in the Internet, and I found many differences between their output and our library output regarding graphics and text field below the code. Now I am not sure which one is wrong, and before filing bug report I want to make sure how the correct barcode should look like. We mainly need Code128 and UCC/EAN-128 with A/B/C subcodes. Which resource would you suggest?

  I'm trying to store a blooming season in month for each tree in SQLite3. Currently I had the field "month" then I store the month name in the field. For example Tree Name Month Tree1 Jan,Feb,Mar Tree2 Nov,Dec,Jan Tree3 Jan,Feb,Mar,Apr,May,Jun,Jul,Aug,Sep,Oct,Nov,Dec Tree4 Mar,Apr,Nov,Dec Tree5 Jan,Feb,Mar,Apr I'm not sure if this is the best way to store it, Any recommendation is appreciate. Secondly, I need to perform a query where I enter in the month and it should return me the tree name that match the search criteria. For example If I search for "Jan" the result should be Tree1,Tree2,Tree3,Tree5 "Jan,Feb,Mar" the result should be Tree1,Tree3,Tree5 "Jan,Feb,Mar,Apr" the result should be Tree5 "Sep,Oct,Nov,Dec" the result should be none Which SQL query do I have to use in order to obtain the above result? • Are upper bounds of indexed ranges always assumed to be exclusive?

  So in Java, whenever an indexed range is given, the upper bound is almost always exclusive. From java.lang.String: substring(int beginIndex, int endIndex) Returns a new string that is a substring of this string. The substring begins at the specified beginIndex and extends to the character at index endIndex - 1 From java.util.Arrays: copyOfRange(T[] original, int from, int to) from - the initial index of the range to be copied, inclusive to - the final index of the range to be copied, exclusive. From java.util.BitSet: set(int fromIndex, int toIndex) fromIndex - index of the first bit to be set. toIndex - index after the last bit to be set. As you can see, it does look like Java tries to make it a consistent convention that upper bounds are exclusive. My questions are: Is this the official authoritative recommendation? Are there notable violations that we should be wary of? Is there a name for this system? (ala "0-based" vs "1-based")

• Does Python Django support custom SQL and denormalized databases with no Foreign Key relationships?

  I've just started learning Python Django and have a lot of experience building high traffic websites using PHP and MySQL. What worries me so far is Python's overly optimistic approach that you will never need to write custom SQL and that it automatically creates all these Foreign Key relationships in your database. The one thing I've learned in the last few years of building Chess.com is that its impossible to NOT write custom SQL when you're dealing with something like MySQL that frequently needs to be told what indexes it should use (or avoid), and that Foreign Keys are a death sentence. Percona's strongest recommendation was for us to remove all FKs for optimal performance. Is there a way in Django to do this in the models file? create relationships without creating actual DB FKs? Or is there a way to start at the database level, design/create my database, and then have Django reverse engineer the models file?

• Validate decimal number in (known) national format

  PHP has many built-in functions to validate numbers but they all expect input in computer format: 1234.56. I need to validate stuff like 1,234.56 (English) or 1.234,56 (Spanish), together with some typical attributes (accepted range, max number of decimals, etc.). I started writing my own function but I soon got lost. It's easy to read the user input into a float variable but I want to be able to detect numbers with invalid formats like 1,23456.7 or 1..25. Do you have any recommendation on the subject? (Decimal and thousand characters are known beforehand and it's okay to hard-code digit groups as three, there's no need to cover Indian number format.)

• WPF Books in 2010

  I'm looking to learn WPF, and I'd like to get a book to help in the process. Most of the popular questions on SO regarding actual books are from 2008, and I wanted to see if recommendations for books had changed at all. WPF Unleashed, which seems to be the most popular recommendation, was published in 2006, which is quite a while ago, with the lightening-quick pace that Microsoft has been following with .NET. Does this book still work? For some background, I'm a web developer (using MVC, so MVVM makes sense to me conceptually), looking to make the jump to desktop development. I did C# a while ago, but I'll be picking up a separate C# book to get up to speed on that. I am not interested in Silverlight. I am not necessarily interested in flashy UIs right now, as I'm working on business software but what I am interested in is good, clean, intuitive user interfaces.

• Looking for a source code management system with a good GUI client

  We are currently using CS-RCS Pro for source code management, and are looking for to replace this due to performance issues. It is based on client side file access with no own protocol, which makes it painfully slow to use over a slow VPN line since it always rewrites the whole history of a file. It does however have a GUI client which is very simple and gives a great overview. We have three main requirements in a SCM: Fast. It must have a server side service or some other smart way so working with files with a large history is fast. A good Windows GUI client (not Explorer shell integration, not VS or Eclipse IDE integration), so working with files and branches is easy. The possibility to have several branches checked out at once in different directories. Does anyone have a recommendation of a SCM which fulfills there requirements?

• Handling a binary operation that makes sense only for part of a hierarchy.

  I have a hierarchy, which I'll simplify greatly, of implementations of interface Value. Assume that I have two implementations, NumberValue, and StringValue. There is an average operation which only makes sense for NumberValue, with the signature NumberValue average(NumberValue numberValue){ ... } At some point after creating such variables and using them in various collections, I need to average a collection which I know is only of type NumberValue, there are three possible ways of doing this I think: Very complicated generic signatures which preserve the type info in compile time (what I'm doing now, and results in hard to maintain code) Moving the operation to the Value level, and: throwing an unsupportedOperationException for StringValue, and casting for NumberValue. Casting at the point where I know for sure that I have a NumberValue, using slightly less complicated generics to insure this. Does anybody have any better ideas, or a recommendation on oop best practices?

  hi guys, i was wondering how could i deploy/make it into an installer for an app which is created using vs 2008 express. i know that the setup and deployment feature is only available via the full version of visual studio right? • Why is BigDecimal.equals specified to compare both value and scale individually?

  This is not a question about how to compare two BigDecimal objects - I know that you can use compareTo instead of equals to do that, since equals is documented as: Unlike compareTo, this method considers two BigDecimal objects equal only if they are equal in value and scale (thus 2.0 is not equal to 2.00 when compared by this method). The question is: why has the equals been specified in this seemingly counter-intuitive manner? That is, why is it important to be able to distinguish between 2.0 and 2.00? It seems likely that there must be a reason for this, since the Comparable documentation, which specifies the compareTo method, states: It is strongly recommended (though not required) that natural orderings be consistent with equals I imagine there must be a good reason for ignoring this recommendation.

  Is this technology still popular? I want to make a website which automatically transforms XSLT files. It should work like this: When a user accesses the site, a single handler would accept his request and then find a suitable XML for it (according to the URL requested) and transform it using its attached XSL file. I want to do this in order to make it easy to update the site using plain XML files (instead of using a full-fledged & expensive CMS system). • Which NoSQL db to use with C?

  Hello all, I'm working on an application that I'm going to write with C and i am considering to use a nosql db for storing timeseries data with at most 8 or 9 fields. But in every 5 minutes there will huge write operations such as 2-10 million rows and then there will be reads(but performance is not as crucial in read as in the write operation). I'm considering to use a NoSQL db here in order to store the data but couldn't decide on which one to use. Couchdb seems to have a stable driver called pillowtalk for C; but Mongo's driver doesn't look as promising as pillowtalk. I'm also open to other suggestions. What is your recommendation?

• How should I mock out my data connectivity

  I'm trying to unit test my Data Access Layer and I'm in the process of trying to mock my data connectivity to unit test my DAL and I'm coming unstuck trying to mock out the creation of the commands. I thought about using a queue of IDbParameters for the creation of the parameters, but the unit tests then require that the parameters are configured in the right order. I'm using MOQ and having looked around for some documentation to walk me through this, I'm finding lots of recommendation not to do this, but to write a wrapper for the connection, but it's my contention that my DAL is supposed to be the wrapper for my database and I don't feel I should be writing wrappers... if I do, how do I unit test the connectivity to the database for my wrapper? By writing another wrapper? It seems like it's turtles all the way down. So does anyone have any recommendations or tutorials regarding this particular area of unit testing/mocking?

• Godaddy registrar and Amazon Web Services EC2/Route 53

  Ok - I currently have a site hosted on Godaddy and they are the registrar for my domain. My goal is to have my site hosted on AWS with an EC2 server, which I have already set up and it is ready to go. In order to migrate my domain name to Amazon I have set up an A record with Godaddy and another A record with Route 53 (Amazon's routing service) with both of them pointing to the new static IP of the AWS site. My question is - Godaddy told me that I should leave my nameservers as Godaddy since my email is with them and set up an MX record wit Amazon pointing to it. Does this sound correct? Can you leave nameservers with Godaddy and have A records pointed to the new IP? Are there any benefits/cons to this? *FOR THE RECORD - My site is DOWN right now after doing the change - Godaddy says it will take 2 hours to come back, but I'm not sure if their nameserver recommendation is correct.

• Getting deadlocks in MySQL

  We're very frustratingly getting deadlocks in MySQL. It isn't because of exceeding a lock timeout as the deadlocks happen instantly when they do happen. Here's the SQL code that is executing on 2 separate threads (with 2 separate connections from the connection pool) that produces a deadlock: UPDATE Sequences SET Counter = LAST_INSERT_ID(Counter + 1) WHERE Sequence IS NULL Sequences table has 2 columns: Sequence and Counter The LAST_INSERT_ID allows us to retrieve this updated counter value as per MySQL's recommendation. That works perfect for us, but we get these deadlocks! Why are we getting them and how can we avoid them?? Thanks so much for any help with this.
