  • android sdk main.out.xml parsing error?

    - by mobibob
I just started a new Android project, "WeekendStudy" to continue learning Android development and I got stumped compiling the default 'hello weekendstudy' compile / run. I think that I missed a step in configuration and setup, but I am at a loss to find out where. I have an AVD configured, set and launched. When I press 'run', the SDK is building a file main.out.xml and then fails as this: [2010-03-06 09:46:47 - WeekendStudy]Error in an XML file: aborting build. [2010-03-06 09:46:48 - WeekendStudy]res/layout/main.xml:0: error: Resource entry main is already defined. [2010-03-06 09:46:48 - WeekendStudy]res/layout/main.out.xml:0: Originally defined here. • PHP manipulating multidimensional array values

    - by Joker
I have a result set as an array from a database that looks like: array ( 0 => array ( "a" => "something" "b" => "something" "c" => "something" ) 1 => array ( "a" => "something" "b" => "something" "c" => "something" ) 2 => array ( "a" => "something" "b" => "something" "c" => "something" ) ) How would I apply a function to replace the values of an array only on the array key with b? Normally I would just rebuild a new array with a foreach loop and apply the function if the array key is b, but I'm not sure if it's the best way. I've tried taking a look at many array functions and it seemed like array_walk_recursive is something I might use, but I didn't have luck in getting it to do what I want. If I'm not describing it well enough, basically I want to be able to do as the code below does: $arr = array(); foreach ($result as $key => $value) { foreach ($value as $key2 => $value2) { $arr[$key][$key2] = ($key2 == 'b' ? $this->_my_method($value2) : $value2); } } Should I stick with that, or is there a better way?

  • What options exist to get text/ list items to appear in columns?

    - by alex
I have a bunch of HTML markup coming from an external source, and it is mainly h3 elements and ul elements. I want to have the content flow in 3 columns. I know there is something coming in CSS3, but what options do I have to get this content to flow nicely into the 3 columns at the time being? I'm not that concerned about IE6 (as long as it degrades gracefully). Am I stuck using jQuery to parse the markup and chop it up into 3 divs which float? Thank you Update As per request, here is some of the HTML I am working with <h3>Tourism Industry</h3> <ul> <li><a href="">Something</a></li> <li><a href="">Something</a></li> <li><a href="">Something</a></li> <li><a href="">Something</a></li> </ul> <h3>Small Business</h3> <ul> <li><a href="">Something</a></li> <li><a href="">Something</a></li> <li><a href="">Something</a></li> <li><a href="">Something</a></li> <li><a href="">Something</a></li> </ul> And a whole lot more following the same format.

  • Does the order of case in Switch statement can vary the performance?

    - by Bipul
Let say I have a switch statement as below Switch(alphabet){ case "f": //do something break; case "c": //do something break; case "a": //do something break; case "e": //do something break; } Now suppose I know that the frequency of having Alphabet e is highest followed by a, c and f respectively. So, I just restructured the case statement order and made them as follows. Switch(alphabet){ case "e": //do something break; case "a": //do something break; case "c": //do something break; case "f": //do something break; } Will the second Switch statement better perform(means faster) than the first switch statement? If yes and if in my program I need to call this switch statement say many times, will that be a substantial improvement? Or if not in any how can I use my frequency knowledge to improve the performance? Thanks

  • how to go through a string array and apply functions for different strings?

    - by Newbie
Ok, this may be really noobish question, but i am wishing there is something i dont know yet. I go through a file, and check which string each line has, depending on the string value i execute a different function for it (or functions). This is how i do it now: if(str == "something"){ // do stuff }else if(str == "something else"){ // do stuff }else if(str == "something more"){ // do stuff }else if(str == "something again"){ // do stuff }else if(str == "something different"){ // do stuff }else if(str == "something really different"){ // do stuff } I am afraid this will become "slow" after i have to repeat those else if lines a lot... I tried to use switch() statement, but obviously it doesnt work here, is there something similar to switch() to use here?

  • unittest in python: ignore an import from the code I want to test

    - by vaidab
I have a python program that imports pythoncom (and uses pythoncom.CoCreateInstance from it). I want to create a unittest for the program logic without it importing pythoncom (so I can run the test on Linux as well). What options are there? Can I do it without modifying the system under test? What I found so far: sys.modules["pythoncom"] = "test" import module_that_imports_pythoncom My problem with it is if I have: from pythoncom.something import something I'll get: ImportError: No module named something.something And sys.modules["something.something"] or sys.modules["pythoncom.something.something"] doesn't work. Any ideas?

  • Is there a name for the Builder Pattern where the Builder is implemented via interfaces so certain parameters are required?

    - by Zipper
    So we implemented the builder pattern for most of our domain to help in understandability of what actually being passed to a constructor, and for the normal advantages that a builder gives. The one twist was that we exposed the builder through interfaces so we could chain required functions and unrequired functions to make sure that the correct parameters were passed. I was curious if there was an existing pattern like this. Example below: public class Foo { private int someThing; private int someThing2; private DateTime someThing3; private Foo(Builder builder) { this.someThing = builder.someThing; this.someThing2 = builder.someThing2; this.someThing3 = builder.someThing3; } public static RequiredSomething getBuilder() { return new Builder(); } public interface RequiredSomething { public RequiredDateTime withSomething (int value); } public interface RequiredDateTime { public OptionalParamters withDateTime (DateTime value); } public interface OptionalParamters { public OptionalParamters withSeomthing2 (int value); public Foo Build ();} public static class Builder implements RequiredSomething, RequiredDateTime, OptionalParamters { private int someThing; private int someThing2; private DateTime someThing3; public RequiredDateTime withSomething (int value) {someThing = value; return this;} public OptionalParamters withDateTime (int value) {someThing = value; return this;} public OptionalParamters withSeomthing2 (int value) {someThing = value; return this;} public Foo build(){return new Foo(this);} } } Example of how it's called: Foo foo = Foo.getBuilder().withSomething(1).withDateTime(DateTime.now()).build(); Foo foo2 = Foo.getBuilder().withSomething(1).withDateTime(DateTime.now()).withSomething2(3).build();

  • What is the best way to flag some elements in MATLAB? using NaN or Inf? or something else?

    - by Kamran Bigdely Shamloo
As you may know, in many occasions, there is a need to flag some elements of a matrix. For example when we have weighted adjacency matrix, and our graph is not fully connected, we have to flag some elements to show that there is no edge between those nodes. The question is how to do that? Is it better to put NaN or Inf on that elements in the matrix? or something elese(such as -1)?

  • Why do some large companies use a different domain for sending emails?

    - by Andrei Rinea
I've received notifications and newsletters from Microsoft and Facebook in the past and noticed that both emails came not from an address such as [email protected] or [email protected]. Not event [email protected] but both had different domains such as : [email protected] and [email protected] Why is this? Any particular advantage in doing so? Other than not polluting the employees email software, I can't see.

  • Is it okay to define a [] method in ruby's NilClass?

    - by Silasj
Ruby by default does not include the method [] for NilClass For example, to check if foo["bar"] exists when foo may be nil, I have to do: foo = something_that_may_or_may_not_return_nil if foo && foo["bar"] # do something with foo["bar"] here end If I define this method: class NilClass def [](arg) nil end end Something like that would make this possible, even if foo is nil: if foo["bar"] # do something with foo["bar"] end Or even: if foo["bar"]["baz"] # do something with foo["bar"]["baz"] here end Question: Is this a good idea or is there some reason ruby doesn't include this functionality by default?

  • CDateTimeCtrl - preventing 'focus' change when setting date

    - by WalderFrey
I'd like to use a CDateTimeCtrl to allow the user to select a non-weekend date. So, if the user increments the day (via a keypress) - and the resulting day is found to fall on a weekend - then the control should skip forward to the following Monday (don't let issues about month changes distract you, it's not relevant). Usually it's not a problem: when I handle the DTN_DATETIMECHANGE notification I can check the new date/time and if it's found to be a weekend then I can call SetTime on the control to update the date. However, if I set the style to DTS_SHOWNONE, this call to SetTime causes the control to shift the input 'focus' (term used loosely) to the 'none' checkbox, e.g. away from the day field. This prevents the user from using keyboard input to continue incrementing the date unless they subsequently use the right arrow key to reset the 'focus', which is just nasty. I would dearly like to prevent this focus shift from occurring. Is it even possible?

  • Bash Parallelization of CPU-intensive processes

    - by ehsanul
tee forwards its stdin to every single file specified, while pee does the same, but for pipes. These programs send every single line of their stdin to each and every file/pipe specified. However, I was looking for a way to "load balance" the stdin to different pipes, so one line is sent to the first pipe, another line to the second, etc. It would also be nice if the stdout of the pipes are collected into one stream as well. The use case is simple parallelization of CPU intensive processes that work on a line-by-line basis. I was doing a sed on a 14GB file, and it could have run much faster if I could use multiple sed processes. The command was like this: pv infile | sed 's/something//' > outfile To parallelize, the best would be if GNU parallel would support this functionality like so (made up the --demux-stdin option): pv infile | parallel -u -j4 --demux-stdin "sed 's/something//'" > outfile However, there's no option like this and parallel always uses its stdin as arguments for the command it invokes, like xargs. So I tried this, but it's hopelessly slow, and it's clear why: pv infile | parallel -u -j4 "echo {} | sed 's/something//'" > outfile I just wanted to know if there's any other way to do this (short of coding it up myself). If there was a "load-balancing" tee (let's call it lee), I could do this: pv infile | lee >(sed 's/something//' >> outfile) >(sed 's/something//' >> outfile) >(sed 's/something//' >> outfile) >(sed 's/something//' >> outfile) Not pretty, so I'd definitely prefer something like the made up parallel version, but this would work too.

  • Looking for Hardware that will easily interface with my .NET code.

    - by SkippyFire
I'm a .NET C# developer looking to do some hardware interfacing/programming. I just want something super simple to mess around with. I have done one of those basic stamp projects, but I want something with less electrical work. A self-contained piece of hardware would be fine. I'm not really looking to do embedded programming... but that would actually be pretty cool if something was capable of running .net code. I'm looking for something that would be easy to connect, hopefully via USB. Serial ports seems to be more hit or miss nowadays with laptops and netbooks. Something I can easily send data to, like a mini LCD, or series of LED's. Better yet would be something that provides feedback, like a temperature sensor. The best would be something more featured that I could talk to. I would be able to send data to it, and it would send back responses. Maybe something like a servo that could report it's position? Or maybe something that I could set parameters on? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  • Deleting an XML tag using C#

    - by gsvirdi
    FIRST EDIT I'm fetching the Child 1 tag into a DropDownList in my C# form, Plz suggest the best practise code (C#) for deleting a Particular Parent tag & all it's child tags in an XML file. Example of my xml file: <Parents> <Parent> <Child 1>Something</Child 1> <Child 2>Something</Child 2> <Child 3>Something</Child 3> <Child 4>Something</Child 4> </Parent> <Parent> <Child 1>Something 1</Child 1> <Child 2>Something 1</Child 2> <Child 3>Something 1</Child 3> <Child 4>Something 1</Child 4> </Parent> </Parents> I mean something like: for (int i=0; i<[Length of xml doc]; i++) { if (Child 1 == ComboBox1.Text && Child 2 == richTextBox1.Text) // Delete <Parent> tag of that Child 1 }

  • What features would you like to have in PHP?

    - by StasM
Since it's the holiday season now and everybody's making wishes, I wonder - which language features you would wish PHP would have added? I am interested in some practical suggestions/wishes for the language. By practical I mean: Something that can be practically done (not: "I wish PHP would guess what my code means and fix bugs for me" or "I wish any code would execute under 5ms") Something that doesn't require changing PHP into another language (not: "I wish they'd drop $ signs and use space instead of braces" or "I wish PHP were compiled, statically typed and had # in it's name") Something that would not require breaking all the existing code (not: "Let's rename 500 functions and change parameter order for them") Something that does change the language or some interesting aspect of it (not: "I wish there was extension to support for XYZ protocol" or "I wish bug #12345 were finally fixed") Something that is more than a rant (not: "I wish PHP wouldn't suck so badly") Anybody has any good wishes? Mod edit: Stanislav Malyshev is a core PHP developer.

Time to rock the ALT.NET scene and head up to the conference this weekend.  I must say, out of all the conferences I have been to the ALT.NET Conference is by far one of the best.  Great minds, great attitudes, awesome chances to learn, awesome changes to expand on one's ideas with others that hit on the same hurdles!  All in all, last year was great and I am expecting it to be a great conference this year also. For more information check out the ALT.NET site: http://2010conf.altnetseattle.org/ To get more involved in the monthly ALT.NET events in Seattle: http://groups.google.com/group/altnetseattle http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=111345965570 http://www.altnetseattle.org/ If you are in the Seattle area this weekend, be sure to hit up the conference.
