  • Symbolic Links Between User Accounts

    I have been using a cron job to duplicate a folder into another users account every day and someone suggested using symbolic links instead although I cannot get them to work. In summary user GAMER generates log files that they want to access via HTTP, however I only have a web-server in the user account SERVER, in the past I would copy the logs folder from GAMERS account into SERVER/public_html/. and then chmod the files so the server could access them. Trying to use symbolic links I set up a link from root (as only root can access both accounts) I used: ln -s /home/GAMER/game/logs/ /home/SERVER/public_html/logs However it seems that only root can use this link, I tried chmoding the link, all the files in the gamers /game/logs/*, /game/logs itself to 777 as well as changing chown and chgrp to server the files still cannot be read. When viewed from servers account my shell shows the link and where it is to hi-lighted in black with red text. Am I doing something wrong?   • daily rsync backups with hard links, checksums, and a new computer

    I backup my laptop to a Fedora desktop daily using rsync with hard links. This has worked great for almost a year. I recently purchased a new computer, transferred over my data, and would like to continue backing up this computer daily. However, due to the data transfer from the old laptop to the new laptop, the timestamps have obviously changed, and will thus cause my daily rsync backup to re-transfer all of the data. I thought that by adding the -c (checksum) switch to my rsync backup it would match files based on checksum, instead of timestamp and size, and only transfer those files that are different or not present. This appeared to work, but upon examining the new backup, hard links are not being created, and it appears the files that should be hard linked are simply being copied to the new backup directory from the previous backup directory on the backup server. This is very peculiar behavior to me, and I am having trouble figuring out why this is occurring. Checksums match for files that I think should be hard linked. I have looked through the rsync man page and Google'd around a bit and have been unable to find anything for me to better understand this behavior.

  • Creating MS Word 2010 Relative Links?

    Okay here is what I've tried so far for creating relative links in my MS Word Documents. In my document from the ribbon I select the File tab. I then select Info from the side bar. Click the properties drop down from the right hand column. (a bit difficult to find initially, since it looks like text not a drop down, but it's there). Click Advanced Properties The <document-name>.docx Properties Dialog Appears I enter .\ to specify that I want a relative path for the links in my document. I click OK. I go back into my document select some text and attempt to make a link out of it clicking the Insert tab of the ribbon, and then clicking Hyperlink. I then select a document from the current folder, and strip the full path from it, leaving just the name of the .docx file to which I wish to link. Then I click OK. The link appears, I try to click it using Ctrl+Click. I am informed that the address of the site is not valid. Check the address and try again. What could I possibly be doing wrong here? I just want a relative link. It's so easy in to do this in HTML.

  • Is there value in having technical authors in a software team?

    During my 5 years in IT as a software developer, I've noticed that developers have a strong distaste towards doing any documentation. The act of taking screenshots and creating documentation seems to be a painful and time consuming experience. In one company I worked for, we had a technical documentation team with two technical authors and they developed all the user guides for our customers. In other companies where I've suggested hiring a technical author, I've been told they are not worth the money, but I'm a little unsure if that rings true. Is it better to have developers stop coding and take half a day to do screenshots and create the various guides or is it worth hiring someone who handles such tasks?

      We just released this morning SOA Suite 11gR1 Patch Set 2 (PS2)! You can download it as usual from: OTN (main platforms only) eDelivery (all platforms)   11gR1 PS2 is delivered as a sparse installer, that is to say that it is meant to be applied on the latest full release (11gR1 PS1). The good part is that it’s great for existing PS1 users who simply need to apply the patch and run the patch assistant – the not so good part is that new users will first need to download PS1. What’s in that release? Bug fixes of course but also several significant new features.   • Tron: Legacy, 3D goggles, and embedded UA

    The 3D edition of Tron: Legacy opens with embedded user assistance. The film starts with an iconic white-on-black command-prompt message exhorting viewers to keep their 3D glasses on throughout. I can't quote it verbatim, and at the time of writing nor could anybody findable with 5 minutes of googling. But it was something like: "Although parts of the movie are 2D, it was shot in 3D, and glasses should be worn at all times. This is how it was intended to be viewed" Yeah - "intended". That part is verbatim. Wow. Now, I appreciate that even out of the small sub-set of readers who care a rat's ass for critical theory, few will be quite so gung-ho for the whole "death of the author" shtick as I tend to be. And yes, this is ergonomic rather than interpretive, but really - telling an audience how you expect them to watch a movie? That's up there with Big Steve's "you're holding it wrong" Even if it solves the problem, it's pretty arrogant. If anything, it's worse than RTFM. And if enough people are doing it wrong that you have to include the announcement, then maybe - just maybe - you've got a UX and/or design problem. Plus, current 3D glasses are like sitting in a darkened room, cosplaying the lovechild of Spider Jerusalem and Jarvis Cocker. Ok, so that observation was weirder than it was helpful; but seriously, nobody wants to wear the glasses if they don't have to. They ruin the visual experience of the non-3D sections, and personally, I find them pretty disruptive to the suspension of disbelief. This is an old, old, problem, and I'm carping on about it because Tron is enjoyable mass-market slush. It's easier for me to say "no, I can't just put some text on it. It's fundamentally broken, redesign it." in the middle of a small-ish, agile, software project than it would be for some beleaguered production assistant at the end of editing a $200 million movie. But lots of folks in software don't even get to do that. Way more people are going to see Tron, and be annoyed by this, than will ever read a technical communication blog. So hopefully, after two hours of being mildly annoyed, wanting to turn the brightness up, and slowly getting a headache, they'll realise something very, very important: you just can't document your way out of a shoddy UI.

  • What to do when you inherit an unmaintainable codebase?

    I'm currently working at a company with 2 other PHP developers aside from me, and 1 junior developer. The senior developer who originally built the system we're all working on has resigned and will only be here for a matter of weeks. The other developer, who is the only other guy who knows anything about the system, is unhappy here and is looking for a new job. I'm very real danger of being left behind as the only experienced developer on this codebase. Since I've joined this company I've tried to push for better coding standards, project documentation, etc and I do think I've made some headway, but the vast majority of the code is simply unmaintainable and uncommented. A lot of this has to do with the need to get things done fast at points in the project before I joined, but now the technical debt is enormous, even with the two developers who do understand the system on board. Without them, it will simply be impossible to do anything with it. The senior developer is working on trying to at least comment all his code before he leaves but I think the codebase is simply too vast to properly document in the remaining time. Besides, when he does comment it still doesn't make things as clear as it could. If the system was better organized and documented I could probably start refactoring it incrementally, but the whole thing is so tightly coupled that it's very difficult to make any changes in one module without having unintended knock-on effects in other modules. Naturally, there's no unit tests either, and I honestly don't think this codebase could possibly be unit tested anyway given how it's implemented. There also never seems to be enough time to get things done even with 3 developers and 1 junior developer. With one developer and one junior, neither of which had significant input into the early design of the system, I don't see how we could possibly get anything done with keeping the current system working, implementing new features as needed and developing a replacement for the current codebase that is better organized. Is there an approach I can take to cope with this situation, or should I be getting my own CV in order as well at this point? If it was just me and the junior designer who would be left I'd go for the latter option almost without question. However, there's a team of front-end developers and content managers as well, and I'm worried what would become of them if I left and put them in a position where there would be no developers at all. The department might just be closed down altogether under such circumstances, and then I'd have their unemployment on my conscience as well!

  • Free SQL Server training? Now you’re talking.

    SQL Server user groups are everywhere, literally all over the globe there are SQL Server professionals meeting on a regular basis, sharing ideas, solving problems, learning about how to do new stuff and new ways to do old stuff and it’s all for free. I don’t have detailed figures but of all the SQL Server professionals there are only a small number of them attend these user groups. Those people are the people that are taking the time and making then effort to make themselves better at their chosen trade, more employable and having a good time. For free. I don’t know why but there are many people that don’t seem to want to be the best they can be. Some of you enlightened people that do already attend could be doing more though. Have you ever spoken at  your group? Not just in the break while you have a mouthful of pizza and a drink in your hand but had the attention of the whole group listen to you speak. It doesn’t need to be a full hour, it doesn’t need to be some obscure deeply technical demonstration of SQL Server internals, just a few minutes on something that you do that might help other people with their daily work. A neat process that helps you get from Problem A to Solution B. There is no need to get concerned that becoming a speaker means that you suddenly have to know more than anyone else in the room. This is you talking about something that you experienced. What you did, what you would repeat, what you might do differently next time. No one in the audience can pick you up on a technicality. If someone comes out with a great idea that you hadn’t thought of, say “That’s a great idea, I didn’t think of that while we had the problem on our hands. I’ll try to remember that for next time”. If someone is looking to show you up for picking the wrong decision (and this, in my experience, is very uncommon indeed) then you simply give a reply like “Well, at the time we chose that option. Perhaps another time then we would tackle things differently but we were happy with how our solution worked”. It’s sharing things like this that makes user groups have a real value, talking about how you coped with or averted a disaster, a handy little section of code or using a tool in a particular way that you take for granted that might, just might, be something that other people haven’t thought of that solves a problem or saves some time for them. At the next meeting you might get the same benefit from a different person and so it goes on. As individuals benefits so the community benefits. For free. Things I encourage you to do; If you are a chapter or user group leader; encourage someone from your group who has never spoken before to start speaking. If you are a chapter or user group attendee that hasn’t spoken before; speak for at least 5 minutes on something related to SQL Server at any group meeting. If you don’t currently attend a user group; please go along to you nearest one when they are meeting next and invest in yourself and your future.     When I click an e-mail address in Adobe Reader X, an Outlook e-mail window opens, even though Thunderbird is my standard e-mail client and assigned to the mailto: protocol. How can I make Adobe Reader X open e-mail links in Thunderbird? I'm using Windows 7. How to Change the Email Client in Adobe Reader doesn't seem to apply to this version of Adobe Reader, I don't see the drop-down menu of step 6.

  • du excluding hard links possible?

    I'm trying to determine how big a cloned Git repository is from a local file system. It creates hard links for some but not all files. How can I determine the disk usage of it? The best I can come up with is "du -a" right now with the original and again with the clone to determine the difference, since each hard linked file will be counted only once. Ideally, I would just run du on the clone and count each hard linked file zero times.

  • Open Google Reader links in background Safari tab?

    When you press the v keyboard shortcut in Google Reader, it opens a new tab. Regardless of the setting "When a new tab or window is opened, make it active" setting (Under Preferences Tabs), it becomes the frontmost tab when opened. Is there a way to have all tabs open in the background, like when you Cmd+click? (I'm aware of other alternative solutions, such as Firefox which handles this correctly, or a desktop RSS such as NetNewsWire/Vienna which have an "open links in background" option, but I like Google Reader's interface and wish to continue using it)

  • CentOS 6 - Make system aware of custom lib paths and missing base links

    I am trying to compile libmemcached (1.0.7) on CentOS6, and keep getting the following warning: ... checking for event.h... no configure: WARNING: Unable to find libevent ... I manually compiled libevent (2.0.19) and built it using the following configure line: OPTIONS="--prefix=/usr/local/_custom/app/libevent" Everything compiled and installed fine, but I couldn't figure out how to make the system aware that the lib files are in the custom /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/libdir. I stumbled upon an article and read that I can make the system aware of custom lib paths by adding a custom file to /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ directory: # /etc/ld.so.conf.d/customApp.conf /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib Then I issued the ldconfig command and was able to confirm that libevent was included by issuing this command: ldconfig -p | ack -i libevent Seeing that libevent was now included in the ldconfig output, I figured I would be able to compile libmemcached and satisfy the aforementioned warning. Unfortunately it did not. So I took another look at the ldconfig output and noticed this: libevent_pthreads-2.0.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib/libevent_pthreads-2.0.so.5 libevent_openssl-2.0.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib/libevent_openssl-2.0.so.5 libevent_extra-2.0.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib/libevent_extra-2.0.so.5 libevent_core-2.0.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib/libevent_core-2.0.so.5 libevent-2.0.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib/libevent-2.0.so.5 There are no references to the base links, for example, I would expect to see links to these (ls -la /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib): libevent.so -> libevent-2.0.so.5.1.7 libevent_openssl.so -> libevent_openssl-2.0.so.5.1.7 libevent_core.so -> libevent_core-2.0.so.5.1.7 So either I am doing something wrong, or the system still does not know where to look to find libevent.so. -- Update #1 -- I wasn't able to get libmemcached to compile without the warning notice, even after trying to compile using the following configure command: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/_custom/app/libmemcached CFLAGS="-I/usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/include" LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib" I thought for sure this would work because I am directly passing the include and lib directories to the configure command. But it did not.

And though I use Vim as an editor, I don't really need it in my browser. Does anyone know of a Firefox Addon that does just that hit-a-hint like navigation?
