• Web service failing when installed in seperate project from the website...

  I am totally new to web services and cannot get mine to work. My setup is on VS 2008 using IIS. I have one solution file with 3 projects in it: website, code, and services. If I put my webservice into my website and call it locally then it will work fine (it's just a hello world web service). I want to put the service into a different location for use from multiple sites. I don't know what I'm doing wrong - i've read so much conflicting info regarding disco files, access files, silverlight, flash, java, etc. I just looking for quick simple steps to create a web service that I can access from javascript and deploy to a seperate website. End goal is to have functionality in webservices so that website will call via JS and run much smoother in the loading time and async calls. Do I need to create a disco file? Do I need to configure security? -- I know this is prob best, i'm just looking to get it working at all. Do I need to allow cross browser access on IIS or on my hosted server? Are there any quick reference websites that you can recommend? Should I be using WCF as new technology? - I saw this on MSDN but seems to be more for windows apps then web apps. I'm not getting any specific error codes. I have installed the firefox debugging tools (firebug) and I can see what the headers are but I don't know how to interpret them and there is no response being passed back. Any help is appreciated!!!

• Logic behind SCCM 2012 required PXE deployments

  I'm in the process of setting up Windows 7 deployment through PXE boot, with Microsoft SCCM 2012. The imaging itself works very well, but I have a question about the logic behind PXE deployments. My setup is the following: My Windows 7 deployment task sequence is deployed to the unknown computers group. (not required, press F12 to start installing) OSDComputerName variable is also set on the unknown computers group, so unknown computers that are being imaged will prompt for a pc name. The computer then becomes known in SCCM and is added to the correct collection(s). But if I want to reïnstall windows on a known computer things are different: I can do a required deployment of the imaging task sequence to the collection of computers. Then windows installs through PXE, without any human interaction, keeping the original computer name. But because the initial deployment was not required, the "required PXE deployment" flag is not set. So as soon as I add a new computer to a collection with a required PXE deployment, it will start to reïnstall windows again. I can also deploy the imaging task sequence to the new unknown computers as required, so the flag gets set initially. But then it does not prompt for a computer name. (and it generates a name like MININT-xxx) Which is also sort of what I want. Because when i want to re-install a machine, I want it to install without interaction. How can I solve this?

• How to set only specific nginx server block into maintenance mode programmatically

  I am looking for a solution to automate one of our application's deployment process. In the beginning of deployment, I would like to programmatically set the specified server into maintenance mode and finally after the deployment has been completed, remove the maintenance mode flag from the nginx server. By maintenance mode, I mean that nginx should response with HTTP Response Code 503 to all the requests (with possible custom page). I know how to set the server block to respond with 503 code (see http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/custom-nginx-maintenance-page-with-http503/) but the question is about how to do this programmatically and most efficiently. Two options have came to my mind: Option 1: At the beginning of the deployment process, write a maintenance file into document root and conditionally check an existence of the maintenance file in nginx server config: server { if (-f $document_root/in_maintenance_mode) { return 503; } } This method contains certain overhead as the file existence is checked for each request. Is it possible to check the file existence only when loading the nginx config? Option 2: Deployment script replaces the whole nginx server configuration file with a maintenance version and swaps it back in the end of the deployment. If this method is used, I am concerned about possible other automation processes like puppet that may be override the maintenance configuration file.

  This is a theoretical problem I am curious about. Websites are hosted on servers. Servers can be taken offline. Is it possible to host a website in the 'ether' of the Internet -- not on a server -- so that it cannot be taken down? One example, is that the website is hosted on other websites, like a parasite. Another is that it is assembled through storing pieces on DNS machines, routers, etc., so that it get assembled on the fly. The purpose is that this website could live forever because no one person can remove it. The answers I am looking for are plausible idea/approaches on technically how this could be built.

  How can I script the deployment of a Visual Studio database project? I have a DB project in visual studio and I would like to use it in order to deploy on remote machines via a script. I notice that when I 'deploy' from visual studio, it generates a .sql file. I intercepted this file and tried running it from the command line with osql.exe, but I didn't have any success. Should this work, is there a better way to deploy a database programatically from a database project, may be by referencing in another project and calling some method to deploy it?

The large website takes a while to recompile and we've noticed it will still seemingly serve out dynamic pages before everything is internally updated. During the site's "gestation" period, our mileage varies while hitting it. Sometimes we get a correct page, sometimes an compilation error page that will eventually be served up without a compilation error, and at other times an unexpected hybrid. Is it possible to query an ASP.NET website application to see if it's currently compiling or rebuilding itself? If so I would write a status page that the team could reference when they're getting weird behaviour, so they would know to wait. Update: Our team often edit files manually on the dev server. For production we'd make pre-compiled pushes. The dev environment is a little more malleable and ever-changing so I'm looking for a solution to reducing the "confusion" there.

  I was thinking about developing a website that would involved photos and was wondering how to deal with the legal/author rights aspects. If someone could direct me to some resources to find out, I would appreciate. If I take Flicker as an example, people can upload pictures and share them. What if someone a picture that belong to someone else, like a professional photographer? Or what if someone upload a picture of someone and that person does not agree to that?   I want to collect bank account information from my customers on my website. I'd like to do that trough a form, then I will download it to a PC, print it, and then delete it from the website. Or eventually, send it somewhere external right after the user submitted the form so it never gets stored on the website.   I have a pretty basic question. I developed a neet little website wich I'm ready to upload, but still needs a bit of work. The designer needs the html to do his work so the website needs to be uploaded. Besides that, I have to correct a couple details, do the friendly-urls, etc. What's the best way to set up the webpage in the definitive hosting with the defintive domain, blocking it to any unknown users and without affecting affecting SEO and those kind of things. • Google search does not show sub-pages from my website

  My website appears in Google search, but only the first page. Of course I have sub-pages linked from the first page, but the sub-pages do not show in Google search. Not in Yahoo, not in Bing. What should I do? It has been three years that sub-pages do not show. (I tried searching site:mydomain.com and pressed 'repeat the search with the omitted results included' link) What would you suspect the reason? My website addresses were like xxx.php?yy=zzz etc, etc, so I changed it to /yy/zzz using mod_rewrite. I thought it might be (X)HTML standard violations, so now I changed it. I hope Google will soon have my entire website, but I am a little bit pessimistic. Do you have any thought?

• Multiple domain names with pages linking to one website

  Hello, I work for a company who have been redesigning their company website. I have been asked to register loads of domain names that contain the keywords that they want to use on the original site. Each of these domain names will contain a one page website with a destription of what the company offers and a link saying something along the lines of 'click here for more infmormation' which then takes you to the main site. The idea being the main site will then be recieving a lot of inbound links and hopefully rise in the google rankings, not to mention bring in more customers who have come to the site from all the other domain names who wouldn't have normally got to the website because it wasn't ranked on the first page. Is this a good idea or will Google see this as spam and penalise the main site for having loads of links to it from one page websites hosted on the same nameserver? • Will Google crawl session based website

  I have a website, it is split into 3 categories but using PHP its an all-in one kind of style. When a user chooses a category on the home page a session is set, this is then used to set the style and contents of the website. Would Googlebot and other bots be able to still scan my website? If a page is accessed and no session is set then the user is sent back to the home page. I have created special links, that set a session but go straight to the contact page. Even this page doesn't seem to be showing up. Any ideas if a sitemap with specially crafted links (to set the session) will help Google?

  I am new to web development and trying to study various types of websites as case study. Right now my focus is on how search engines works for an eCommerce website. I know basic functioning for a search engine, i.e. crawl web pages, index them and the display the results using those indexes. But I got little confuse in case of an eCommerce website. Don't you think that it would be better if a search engine instead of crawling the web pages containing products, it should directly crawl the database and index the products stored in the database? And when a user search for any product, it will simply give us the rows of the table which matches the user query? If this is not the case, can someone please explain how the usual method works on eCommerce website?
