  • Places Folders Open in Archive Manager

    - by PansophySR
Am relatively new to Ubuntu. Currently running 10.10, which was an upgrade from 10.4, which was an upgrade from 9.10, which was a fresh install. Have never compressed anything in Ubuntu, but because I wanted to use the contents of a large folder on a Windows machine, I installed 7zip. Using Places, I navigated to the folder I wanted to compress, right-clicked, chose Compress, selected 7-zip and started the compression. This took many minutes to complete (the final 7z file is over 2.2 GB), but when I copied it to the windows machine, 7-zip handles it fine. However, now when I open Places, the Home Folder, User folder, Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos and Downloads all open the Archive Manager which gives an error message that it "Could not create the archive" because the "Archive type not supported." If I open Places/Computer choose the usr folder from places on the left and right-click/Properties on any of the folders, Music for instance, there is no place to change the "open with." Anyone know how to get this working again.

  • Webcast: SANS Institute Product Review of Oracle Identity Manager 11gR2

    - by B Shashikumar
Translating the IT-centric, directory based view of access and authorization into the process-driven concerns of business users inevitably creates unique challenges. Enterprises struggle to determine which users have access to what resources and what they are doing with that access. Enforcing governance controls is critical to reduce the risk that an employee or malicious third party with excessive access will take advantage of that access. Dave Shackleford, SANS analyst, recently reviewed the User Provisioning capabilities of Oracle Identity Manager 11gR2. In this webcast, attendees will hear from Dave and other Oracle and customer experts on: The key challenges associated with implementing self-service user provisioning Oracle’s unique online “shopping cart” model for self-service access request Real world case study of user provisioning Best practices for deployment Register today, for this complimentary webcast, hosted by The SANS Institute. Attendees will be among the first to receive a new SANS Analyst Whitepaper on this subject. When: Thur Sep 27  9am PT/12p ET Where: Register here

  • Remote Desktop Connection Manager

    - by Robert May
For years, I’ve been using the “Remote Desktops” mmc plugin to manage servers in our infrastructure.  I’ve upgraded to Windows 8 and Remote Desktops is nowhere to be found!  I search and searched and came across a forum listing saying “Why don’t you just use Remove Desktop Connection Manager?” I downloaded it and started using it and its WAY better than Remote Desktops!  I’m glad they took it out and I discovered this tool.  I wish I had discovered this two years ago! • Lesi, from Graduate Trainee to Territory Manager

    - by Maria Sandu
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 It’s the final year, University is now coming to an end. A new chapter now awaits my arrival. This part of my life is called “Looking for a Job”. With no form of experience whatsoever, getting a job at a well renowned IT company is something that every IT student dreams about. CV: v, Application form: v, interviews: v. Acceptance Call, “Lesi I’m pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to be part of the Oracle Graduate Program for 2012”. Life would never again be the same. Being Part of the Graduate Program Going into the Graduate program, I felt like a baby seeing candy for the first time. The Program gave me the platform to not only break in to the workplace but also to help launch my career. Over the next 3 months, I went through various trainings / workshops / events / coaching / mentorship sessions. Like a construction worker building a solid foundation for a beautifully designed architecture, a clear path to build my career was set. With training out the way, it was now time to start working closely with my team. For the rest of the year, it was all about selling. Sales, Pipeline, Forecasting and numbers soon became the common words in my career. As the saying goes, “once a sales man, always a sales man”. There was no turning back now, a career in sales was the new hustle in my life. I worked closely with my mentor & coach (Ibrahim) who was heading up Zambia and Malawi. This was to be one of my best moments in the program as I started engaging with customers and getting some hands on experience in the field. By the end of the program all the experience, hard work, training and resources came in handy as I was now ready and fully groomed to be a sales rep. Life after the Graduate Program I’m proud to say that now I’m a Territory Manager, heading up Malawi, selling Technology, Middleware & Applications across all industries. I’m part of the Transition Cluster Team, a powerful team headed by the seasoned Senior Director. As a Territory Manager my role is to push for coverage, to penetrate the market by selling Oracle from end- to- end to all accounts in Malawi. I now spend my days living out of a suitcase, moving from hotel to hotel, chasing after business in all areas of Malawi. It’s the life of a Sales Man and I’m enjoying every minute of it. I’m truly fortunate and grateful to have been part of such a wonderful graduate program. I owe my Sales career to the graduate program, and I truly hope that the program will continue to develop and to groom new talent amongst the youth of this world. • How to say effectively to a manager that you missed the 'deadline' [closed]

    - by CyprUS
Possible Duplicate: I cannot reach my deadline. What to do? My manager is a very deadline specific person. Even though I am a trainee, he insists on a deadline for every small assignment that he gives. Now it so happens that I miss the deadline. And boy, he doesn’t like that at all! So how do I say that i missed the deadline without inviting his wrath? How to stop getting into his bad books? P.S. I am not being lazy. Just that the assignments that he gives are not easy stuff, plus I am doing it in Delphi, which is new to me.

  • Unable to connect with IIS7 Manager to remote site

    - by saifkhan
I was unable to connect with IIS7 manager to a remote site. I got on the phone with the hosting provider and they started troubleshooting. After a few minutes they went over all my settings, username, password...the whole shebang and I still couldn't. I then asked the support tech if any ports needed to be opened on my side and she said "ONLY PORT 80 NEEDS TO BE OPENED"... after a few more mins I decided to hop over to the IIS7 website but still couldn't find anything incicating specific ports, but I did came across a doc mentioning 8172 as a port IIS7 uses so I went to my firewall did the following OPEN PORT 8172 OUTBOUND That did the trick!...and the support tech updated her document accordingly.

  • Managing a manager who expects too much

    - by dotnetdev
I am in 3rd line support. We do a lot of bug fixing (although we should be doing other stuff). Quite often, we get systems which are so badly designed and configured (at the server OS level and software level) that they are beyond repair. Yet my manager, even though he was a dev, may swear when I tell him the system is unrepairable (As the person who does our server work gives an opinion that it's FUBAR). However, he still expects it to work without a rebuild. How can I make it work like that when a guy with a million years more experience says the system needs a rebuild?

  • I can't autostart xfce4 power manger lubuntu 13.10

I just upgraded my 64 bit lubuntu to 13.10 on my netbook today. After the upgrade, I simply can't autostart the xfce4 power manager. I tried to add from the desktop session settings, I tried to copy the power manager.desktop file to ~/.config/autostart folder. Everything looks fine, than I logout, log back in, and the darn power manager, just won't start automatically. It only starts when I double click the icon, or if i start it from the terminal. Help me please

EDIT Also in most of applications, characters are white. What could be the problem? and what should I do? 2ND EDIT My ubuntu is 12.04 LTS. I was trying to install some packages for dependencies of allegro game development library, one of the packages was libwxgtk2.8-0, after that a red cross appeared near user name and clock. • Update Manager Partitions

    - by user170585
Perhaps this is completely stupid, but here's my inquiry: I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed on an external hard drive. On that HD there are 4 partitions. Two for operating systems, two for swap (unnecessary but I like it that way). The actual computer itself has Windows 7. If I use the Update manager to update to 12.10 or even 13.04, would the new Ubuntu install itself on the same partition it already was on? The other operating system I'm running on the Hard Drive is Lubuntu, for when I need to run Linux on older computers, if that matters. Thanks, Adam

  • Using Google Tag Manager to define the page type

    - by Daffy
So, I am looking to add a tag that I want to use for A/B testing, however we don't have a page-type URL structure. Fortunately the tool can recognise page type if I pass it by Javascript. <script type="text/javascript"> window.isProductPage = true; </script> I have been told to use the above, I have created the script in Google Tag Manager (GTM), however I now need to know how to make this run on those pages in GTM. I have looked through the code and there are div class that are unique to each page, can I use this as an indication of page type?

  • How to leave the teamviewer window with Alt+Tab

    - by rubo77
I use Teamviewer on Ubuntu (Not sure if the problem is the same on Windows). Whenever I use Alt+TAB to change the focussed window on my computer to another window while the remote window has focus the remote window catches the Alt keydown event but not the Alt release event! So when I get back to the remote Teamviewer window the remote computer still has the Alt Key stuck pressed. How can I prevent that the Alt-key gets stuck on the remote computer?

  • How to make a non-active window also react to mouse clicks immediately, rather than having it become

    - by Pieter Witvoet
I've been using a Mac at work for a couple of months now, but after getting used to it there still are some annoyances that I'm trying to eliminate. If I have multiple windows open, clicking on a non-active window will activate it - but the application does not register the click. Coming from a Windows background, this makes the UI feel very sluggish, as I feel I'm spending far more clicks than I should. Is there a way to configure this behavior? I know there are utilities available for Windows to tweak things like this, are there any similar tools available for Mac OS?

  • Move a window back into the visible area in Xubuntu?

    - by Johan
I have this annoying little problem on my laptop that sometimes after I have used a external monitor (with higher resolution) some applications place them self outside the visible area of my desktop. So the question is how do I move them back into the visible area? (Please note, no part of the window is visible so I can't use the mouse.) Is there some app that can give me focus to move a application to the mouse pointer or something like that? Please note that I'm running Xubuntu (XFCE) on this laptop. Thanks

  • Program to scale any OpenGL/DirectX window 2x larger?

    - by Neeb
I would like to run some game on windowed mode, but its hard to see the game when my desktop resolution is huge. One solution could be to change my desktop resolution every time i play the game. But the bad thing is that my screen automatically smoothes the pixels when im using non-native resolutions, and the blurred pixels really makes it ugly and hard to look at. Is there some program to double the pixel size of any opengl/directx window without smoothing the pixels? I've tried multiple magnifying glass programs, but they all seem to make it blurred...

  • Placing a window near the system tray

    - by user227990
I am writing a program that needs to set a window just above/below the traybar for gtk. I have tried using the 2 approaches that failed. One was using the gtk_status_icon_position_menu function and placing the window in the point where the user clicks (in the tray bar). The problem is that these solutions work in gnome(Linux) but not in Windows. In Linux they work because the window manager doesn't seem to allow placement of windows in the tray panel, honoring the closest possible. In Windows this doesn't happen and the window can go "out" of the screen which understandably is not desired. With this said i went out for a work around. My idea was to set the window in the location of mouse click and get the x and y coordinates of a normal window placement and with it's size check if it would be within the screen boundaries. If it was not make the correction. I have came up with the functions needed but for some reason the gdk_drawable_get_size(window-window ,&WindowWidth, &WindowHeight) and other similar functions only give the correct size value after the second run of the signal function. The result of the first run is just 1 to both size and width. (I have read the issue of X11 not giving correct results, but i think this is not it) event_button = (GdkEventButton *) event; if (event_button->button == 1) { if (active == 0) { gboolean dummy; gint WindowHeight, WindowWidth, WindowPosition[2]; GdkScreen *screen; gint ScreenHeight, ScreenWidth; dummy = FALSE; gtk_widget_show_all(window); gtk_window_present(GTK_WINDOW(window)); gtk_status_icon_position_menu(menu, &pos[X], &pos[Y], &dummy, statusicon); gtk_window_move(GTK_WINDOW(window), pos[X],pos[Y]); gdk_drawable_get_size(window->window ,&WindowWidth, &WindowHeight); screen = gtk_status_icon_get_screen(statusicon); ScreenWidth = gdk_screen_get_width(screen); ScreenHeight = gdk_screen_get_height(screen); g_print("Screen: %d, %d\nGeometry: %d, %d\n",ScreenWidth, ScreenHeight, WindowWidth, window->allocation.height); gtk_entry_set_text(GTK_ENTRY(entry),""); active = 1; return TRUE; } How can i do what i want in a portable way?

  • Disabling Minimize and Maximize buttons in a WPF Window

    - by marianor
In WPF there is no possibility to control when the Minimize and Maximize buttons are disabled when the WindowStyle is SingleBorderWindow or ThreeDBorderWindow . In Windows Forms there are some properties like ControlBox , MinimizeBox and MaximizeBox that allow to do that. Because the WPF window internally has a hWnd we can do this using Windows API ( GetWindowLong and SetWindowLong will do the trick). I did three attached properties applicable to Window that use the internal API, in order to disable...(read more)

  • XChat window start with bottom edge covered

    - by jasmines
When I start Xchat, I note the issue: As you can see, the bottom edge of the window is covered by some other thing (in this case, it's firefox status bar, but if I have no other window opened, I see my desktop background in that position), so I reduce it with the maximize button on top left: Finally I maximize it again and obtain the wanted behaviour: Is this a bug or can I adjust it in any way?

  • Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center : Using Operational Profiles to Install Packages and other Content

    - by LeonShaner
Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center provides numerous ways to deploy content, such as through OS Update Profiles, or as part of an OS Provisioning plan or combinations of those and other "Install Software" capabilities of Deployment Plans.  This short "how-to" blog will highlight an alternative way to deploy content using Operational Profiles. Usually we think of Operational Profiles as a way to execute a simple "one-time" script to perform a basic system administration function, which can optionally be based on user input; however, Operational Profiles can be much more powerful than that.  There is often more to performing an action than merely running a script -- sometimes configuration files, packages, binaries, and other scripts, etc. are needed to perform the action, and sometimes the user would like to leave such content on the system for later use. For shell scripts and other content written to be generic enough to work on any flavor of UNIX, converting the same scripts and configuration files into Solaris 10 SVR4 package, Solaris 11 IPS package, and/or a Linux RPM's might be seen as three times the work, for little appreciable gain.   That is where using an Operational Profile to deploy simple scripts and other generic content can be very helpful.  The approach is so powerful, that pretty much any kind of content can be deployed using an Operational Profile, provided the files involved are not overly large, and it is not necessary to convert the content into UNIX variant-specific formats. The basic formula for deploying content with an Operational Profile is as follows: Begin with a traditional script header, which is a UNIX shell script that will be responsible for decoding and extracting content, copying files into the right places, and executing any other scripts and commands needed to install and configure that content. Include steps to make the script platform-aware, to do the right thing for a given UNIX variant, or a "sorry" message if the operator has somehow tried to run the Operational Profile on a system where the script is not designed to run.  Ops Center can constrain execution by target type, so such checks at this level are an added safeguard, but also useful with the generic target type of "Operating System" where the admin wants the script to "do the right thing," whatever the UNIX variant. Include helpful output to show script progress, and any other informational messages that can help the admin determine what has gone wrong in the case of a problem in script execution.  Such messages will be shown in the job execution log. Include necessary "clean up" steps for normal and error exit conditions Set non-zero exit codes when appropriate -- a non-zero exit code will cause an Operational Profile job to be marked failed, which is the admin's cue to look into the job details for diagnostic messages in the output from the script. That first bullet deserves some explanation.  If Operational Profiles are usually simple "one-time" scripts and binary content is not allowed, then how does the actual content, packages, binaries, and other scripts get delivered along with the script?  More specifically, how does one include such content without needing to first create some kind of traditional package?   All that is required is to simply encode the content and append it to the end of the Operational Profile.  The header portion of the Operational Profile will need to contain the commands to decode the embedded content that has been appended to the bottom of the script.  The header code can do whatever else is needed, and finally clean up any intermediate files that were created during the decoding and extraction of the content. One way to encode binary and other content for inclusion in a script is to use the "uuencode" utility to convert the content into simple base64 ASCII text -- a form that is suitable to be appended to an Operational Profile.   The behavior of the "uudecode" utility is such that it will skip over any parts of the input that do not fit the uuencoded "begin" and "end" clauses.  For that reason, your header script will be skipped over, and uudecode will find your embedded content, that you will uuencode and paste at the end of the Operational Profile.  You can have as many "begin" / "end" clauses as you need -- just separate each embedded file by an empty line between "begin" and "end" clauses. Example:  Install SUNWsneep and set the system serial number Script:  deploySUNWsneep.sh ( <- right-click / save to download) Highlights: #!/bin/sh # Required variables: OC_SERIAL="$OC_SERIAL" # The user-supplied serial number for the asset ... Above is a good practice, showing right up front what kind of input the Operational Profile will require.   The right-hand side where $OC_SERIAL appears in this example will be filled in by Ops Center based on the user input at deployment time. The script goes on to restrict the use of the program to the intended OS type (Solaris 10 or older, in this example, but other content might be suitable for Solaris 11, or Linux -- it depends on the content and the script that will handle it). A temporary working directory is created, and then we have the command that decodes the embedded content from "self" which in scripting terms is $0 (a variable that expands to the name of the currently executing script): # Pass myself through uudecode, which will extract content to the current dir uudecode $0 At that point, whatever content was appended in uuencoded form at the end of the script has been written out to the current directory.  In this example that yields a file, SUNWsneep.7.0.zip, which the rest of the script proceeds to unzip, and pkgadd, followed by running "/opt/SUNWsneep/bin/sneep -s $OC_SERIAL" which is the command that stores the system serial for future use by other programs such as Explorer.   Don't get hung up on the example having used a pkgadd command.  The content started as a zip file and it could have been a tar.gz, or any other file.  This approach simply decodes the file.  The header portion of the script has to make sense of the file and do the right thing (e.g. it's up to you). The script goes on to clean up after itself, whether or not the above was successful.  Errors are echo'd by the script and a non-zero exit code is set where appropriate. Second to last, we have: # just in case, exit explicitly, so that uuencoded content will not cause error OPCleanUP exit # The rest of the script is ignored, except by uudecode # # UUencoded content follows # # e.g. for each file needed, #  $ uuencode -m {source} {source} > {target}.uu5 # then paste the {target}.uu5 files below # they will be extracted into the workding dir at $TDIR # The commentary above also describes how to encode the content. Finally we have the uuencoded content: begin-base64 444 SUNWsneep.7.0.zip UEsDBBQAAAAIAPsRy0Di3vnukAAAAMcAAAAKABUAcmVhZG1lLnR4dFVUCQADOqnVT7up ... VXgAAFBLBQYAAAAAAgACAJEAAADTNwEAAAA= ==== That last line of "====" is the base64 uuencode equivalent of a blank line, followed by "end" and as mentioned you can have as many begin/end clauses as you need.  Just separate each embedded file by a blank line after each ==== and before each begin-base64. Deploying the example Operational Profile looks like this (where I have pasted the system serial number into the required field): The job succeeded, but here is an example of the kind of diagnostic messages that the example script produces, and how Ops Center displays them in the job details: This same general approach could be used to deploy Explorer, and other useful utilities and scripts. Please let us know what you think?  Until next time...\Leon-- Leon Shaner | Senior IT/Product ArchitectSystems Management | Ops Center Engineering @ Oracle The views expressed on this [blog; Web site] are my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of Oracle. • Window Focus in Scale (Compiz)

    - by Göran
This is a follow-up question to Expose (OSX Style) Functionality in Unity. I'm having issues with focus. With the help of Compiz Config I have succesfully activated a window picker similar to the one named exposé in Mac OS X (but with more options!). However when I use this function the window I click on/choose is not automatically focused. How can I fix this or is this a bug within Compiz/Scale?

  • Window Functions in SQL Server

When SQL Server introduced Window Functions in SQL Server 2005, it was done in a rather tentative way, with only a handful of functions being introduced. This was frustrating, as they remove the last excuse for cursor-based operations by providing aggregations over a partition of the result set, and imposing an ordered sequence over a partition. Now, with SQL Server 2012, we are soon to enjoy a full range of Window Functions. They are going to make for some much simpler SQL queries.

  • Transmission window freezes

    - by eyeinthebrick
I'm using Xubuntu 13.10, although this problem was in 13.04 too. The thing is that Transmission window freezes sometimes and makes computer not response. This problem appears, when Transmission creates another window, e.g. for preferences, or for choosing files to be downloaded. What might be the reason for the problem? After reading similar questions, I think the reason might be that I download files to ntfs partition.
