How to run Firefox in Protected Mode? (i.e. at low integrity level)

i noticed that Firefox, unlike Chrome and Internet Explorer, doesn't run in the Low Mandatory Level (aka Protected Mode, Low Integrity) Google Chrome: Microsoft Internet Explorer: Mozilla Firefox: Following Microsoft's instructions, i can manually force Firefox into Low Integrity Mode by using: icacls firefox.exe /setintegritylevel Low But Firefox doesn't react well to not running with enough rights: i like the security of knowing that my browser is running with less rights than i have. Is there a way to run Firefox into low rights mode? Is Mozilla planning on adding "protected mode" sometime? Has someone found a workaround to Firefox not handling low rights mode? Update From a July 2007 interview with Mike Schroepfer, VP of Engineering at the Mozilla Foundation: ...we also believe in defense in depth and are investigating protected mode along with many other techniques to improve security for future releases. After a year and a half it doesn't seem like it is a priority.

How to connect to a SOCKS Proxy from an iPhone/iPod Touch?

I like to surf securely and privately via a SOCKS proxy which I created via SSH tunneling, on the Mac. I used the SSH client on my Mac to achieve this. Then I thought, since the iPhone OS is essentially Mac OS, the same trick might work also on the iPhone. I managed to create a SSh tunnel on my iPhone via the Terminal (iPhone's Terminal). (Yes, it's jail-broken) ssh -D [port] [email protected] At this stage my iPhone is SOCKS proxy. However, there doesn't seem to be a way in the iPhone networking preference panel to specify a SOCKS proxy. Someone suggest creating a Proxy Auto-Contig (PAC) file to workaround this, but that sounds complicated. Any ideas how to make iPhone use it's own SOCKS proxy?

Terminal proxy or screen without terminal emulation

How can I make terminal applications immune to terminal emulator close, but still able to use all virtual terminal features? I see this must be something like screen, but without VT100 terminal emulation, something which will just apply whatever application does with "terminal proxy"'s terminal (like outputting something to stdout/stderr or using stty to set terminal options) to the terminal this proxy runs in. // I know about screen and altscreen on, but it makes either this (screen with TERM=screen): or this (screen with TERM=rxvt-unicode): while I want this (rxvt-unicode without screen): I have figured out that everything looks fine if I compile rxvt-unicode with USE=-xterm-color (in fact vim looks like on the second picture even without screen if I add this USE flag) and set TERM=screen-256color, but I do not like this workaround because it actually changes colors and I can't be sure that it will always change them only this way:

Why is gcc failing with "unrecognized command line option "-L/lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib" "?

My sysadmin recently installed a new version of GCC, in /lusr/opt/gcc-4.4.3. I tested it as follows: mike@canon:~$ cat test.c int main(){ return 0; } mike@canon:~$ gcc test.c /lusr/opt/gcc-4.4.3/libexec/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.4.3/cc1: error while loading shared libraries: libmpfr.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory After informing my sysadmin about this, he said to add /lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib:/lusr/opt/gmp-4.3.2/lib to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH. After doing this, I get the following error: mike@canon:~$ gcc test.c cc1: error: unrecognized command line option "-L/lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib" First, my sysadmin wasn't entirely sure this was the best workaround(though he did say it worked for him...), so is there a better solution? Second, why am I getting a linker error from cc, and how can I fix it? Error "403 Forbidden" on Sharepoint Search Settings Page

Hello I thought I had solved this nightmare by re-entering the values in my SSP properties set up, however accessing the Search Settings page error has reared it ugly head again. Now all solutions point to this method listed here * http://www.routtlogics.com/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=6 * http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointadmin/thread/f00651cd-e452-45b9-b19e-90e89c3c3ad4 * http://blogs.technet.com/sushrao/archive/2009/03/26/microsoft-office-sharepoint-server-2007-moss-403-forbidden-error-when-clicked-on-search-settings-page.aspx The above workaround(s) basically states that granting the local group WSS_WPG read and write permission to the Task folder in the Windows directory would solve the problem, however whenever I try to change to the permission attribute of this folder I get an access denied message, even when logged in as a Domain administrator, Enterprise and even the SharePoint Farm administrator. Please guys how do I get around this access denied issue. Thanks

Cannot run setups from a vboxsvr mapped network drive on Windows within VirtualBox

I'm trying to run an application setup by double-clicking the setup.exe from within Windows Explorer. The file is located on a mapped network drive, and I'm using Windows 7. This results in the following error message: The specified path does not exist. Check the path, and then try again. The workaround I found is to copy the installer to the main hard drive (c:) and run it from there; however, this is rather inconvenient. I have the impression that the problem only occurs with installers, as everything seemed to work fine with regular exe's. Is there anyone who can explain this odd behavior? Update: After some extended tests I noticed that the problem only occurs with a mapped drive of VirtualBox's "shared folders" (cf. vboxsvr; VirtualBox v3.1.4). Mapping an SMB drive works fine. Update: The same problem occurs on Windows Vista.

How to charge an iPhone on a Windows PC without Installing iTunes

I want to be able to charge my iPhone on my work computer, which is running Windows Server 2008 SP1 64-Bit. When I plug the iPhone in with the USB cable, it will not charge. Windows attempts to locate a driver for the device but only comes up with a generic Camera device and even if I allow that to be installed, the iPhone still does not charge. I have checked the computer's BIOS settings and did not find anything relating to power on the USB devices. I also tried this on ports at the back of the computer in addition to those on the front. The PC is a Dell Optiplex 780. As far as I can tell USB devices do not charge unless Windows has installed an appropriate driver. Since it is a work computer I do not want to install iTunes which does include a driver. I have a workaround that I will post as an answer for reference.

GET /wpad.dat entries flooding my access_log

I have a small LAN of some 30 users in it with proxy auto configuration enabled and working. Two of them are requesting wpad.dat file too rapidly at a pace of 30 times per second. 10.1.14.246 - - [02/Jun/2014:09:07:18 +0200] "GET /wpad.dat HTTP/1.1" 302 302 10.1.14.141 - - [02/Jun/2014:09:07:18 +0200] "GET /wpad.dat HTTP/1.1" 302 302 I don't know whether this is a problem from performance perspective, (the server is powerful enough to handle this) but the problem is it clogs up the access_log file. It grows about 1GB per week. Clients run Win7Pro. What could cause this behavior? What can be done to stop it? I have shortened log rotate window as a temporary workaround to prevent /var fill up. Linux DNS Multi tenant

I need to setup a multi-tenant DNS solution in Linux DNS Server. Currently I serve multiple companies: Company ABC, Company XYZ, etc... I need to create a) Forwarder zone b) Reverse Forward Zone. I can easily create a Forward Zone with domain abc.com The challenge I have is that each of my customer components share the same IP address. Hence If I create the Reverse Forward Zone I end up with something like this: abc.com 1.1.1.1 host.abc.com xyz.com 1.1.1.1 host.xyz.com If I perform a reverse lookup on host.abc.com it works fine...but if I do a reverse lookup on 1.1.1.1 I get a load balance response of: attempt: host.abc.com attempt: host.xyz.com attempt: host.abc.com Any ideas? I want to add logic to the DNS configuration to handle DNS reverse lookup based on source machine and respond with right hostname. Workaround: Create multiple DNS but this is not scalable.

How to restart php-cgi automatically with spawn-fcgi

I'm running nginx with php as fcgi. It's working just fine, however, php-cgi keeps on exit()ing after serving 500 requests. I tried increasing that value (PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS), and that worked, but that seems to be a workaround. Then I set it to 0, and it didn't exit() yet. But I think there's a reason why php-cgi should be restarted. At the moment, I'm running php-cgi with spawn-fcgi: when the php process exits, spawn-fcgi exits, too. Now, is there a way to automatically restart php (without dirty hacks like while [ 1 ]; do spawn-fcgi; done etc)?

yum issue - error msg

i am using oracle linux server 6.2. yum does not work. a manual wget was already used according to https://blogs.oracle.com/OTNGarage/entry/how_to_subscribe_to_the . there is always something about dropbox. yum update firefox Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, security http://linux.dropbox.com/fedora/6Server/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] PYCURL ERROR 22 - "The requested URL returned error: 404" Trying other mirror. linux passwords in configuration files

Some programs on linux that use configuration files, want me to enter my password in plain text in one of their configuration files. For example newsbeauter, the rss reader wants me to enter my google account password in a ~/.newsbeauter/config if I want to read google reader feeds. Mutt also sort of wants a password in a text file, but gives an option of entering it on every login. Is there any secure workaround to storing a password in a config file like that (eg for newsbeauter)? I was thinking of running the app as root, but that doesn't seem right. Or somehow creating and deleting the file everytime I use the app. Any ideas?

nTop RRD file architecture

I have a gig of nTop RRD files and I would like to start graphing them with rrdtool (but not with nTop, since I'm hoping to do this with a separate backup of the database as workaround to the impossibility of limiting the RRD files by size), but I don't know how the files are structured. I've tried reading the RRD documentation from SourceForge and the nTop FAQ, but I'm not finding the information I need. Does anyone know of any documentation I should be looking at or how the files are structured? Here https://dl.dropbox.com/u/669437/file%20structure.png is a screenshot of the file structure. At first I thought it was organized by IP address (so the rrd files for address 1.1.2.3 would be stored in folder 1-1-2-3 or even the reverse order), but that doesn't seem to be the case. It isn't organized by MAC address either, although some hosts are saved that way. Any help would be appreciated.

Search predictions broken in Chrome - reinstall didn't solve the problem

I recently changed the default search engine to a custom google search URL (using baseUrl) with some additional parameters and removed all the rest of the search engines, and since then, the search predictions stopped working. I even tried to reinstall Chrome but as soon as I resync, the problem is back! Search predictions are just gone without option to fix!! In IE changing the search provider allows specifying a prediction (suggestion) provider, In chrome, once you change the default search engine, you'll never be able to have predictions again!! This is a terrible bug, I mean WTF!!! Is there any workaround to that? I posted a bug report a while ago but it seems no one looks at it. I'm about to give up on Chrome and go back to IE, the only good thing about Chrome is the Extension market and the AdBlocker (which I can find in IE as well). The perfrormance changes don't matter to me too much. Thanks

Does the Win XP/7 dual boot "missing restore points" problem apply to systems with separate hard disks for each O/S?

I'm in the process of installing Windows 7/64 on a system with Windows XP/32 on it. During my research, I read about a problem that occurs in the dual boot scenario where Windows XP deletes Windows 7's restore points when it accesses the Windows 7 volume: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926185 I found a workaround but it seems pretty painful since it appears to involve using the registry to make the Windows 7 volume appear invisible or "offline" to Windows XP, making sharing disk data between the two O/S annoying since you have to use something like an external storage device to get it done: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/127417-system-restore-points-stop-xp-dual-boot-delete.html I was wondering if this problem only occurs with systems that have both O/S installed on the same physical hard drive (in different partitions)? Domain transfer from Yahoo to Godaddy. Google apps downtime

I am moving my domain from Yahoo to Godaddy (cause yahoo charges ridiculously hugh amounts than others). My problem is I use this domain for Google apps and one of those is my custom email. So here are a few questions that I have - 1) Godaddy told me there is going to be a 48 hours of downtime. Is there anything that I can do to minimize the downtime? 2) Will I lose all the email that I get during this downtime? or they be stored in the cloud and bulk emailed me once my domain is up with Godaddy? If they are lost is there any workaround to forward them to my gmail during the downtime (i know sounds stupid, but I have to ask). Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Oracle on NFS vmdk beats native NFS!?

Hi, my colleagues are pursuing this with Netapp and Oracle - but I thought I'd post here on the off chance someone else has seen this We have a RedHat 5 VM (fully up2date) running Oracle 11i with data disks mounted via the VM's linux kernel NFS using Oracle's recommended mount options and the performance is very inconsistent (Querys that should take < 2 seconds sometimes take 60 seconds) Funny thing is we can run the same queries perfectly consistently < 2 seconds on a VMDK residing on SAME NetApp NFS datastore! Makes me wish Oracle and NetApp collaborated as closely as VMware and NetApp did on the Virtual Storage Console we used to perfectly set the NFS options and keep them in compliance... We have tried a few Linux NFS options others have posted and not seen improvement so far. We are now creating VMDK's for the VM to replace the Linux NFS mounted and workaround the issue as our developers need consistent performance ASAP.

Realtek audio AC 97 5.1 on Windows 7: Terrible subwoofer quality

I have a media center PC with on-board Realtek AC97 Audio. I have been using Windows XP for a couple of years with great audio quality. I just upgraded this PC with Windows 7 and installed the latest Realtek drivers from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ At the testing screen, all the speakers works correctly (including subwoofer). Despite that, while playing any movie or music, the subwoofer quality is terrible. From it it just comes noises, in the correct rhythm but quite low and quite out of tone. I compensated the loudness by putting the other speakers lower but the sound of the subwoofer is really terrible. Is there anyone facing the same problem? Does anyone have a workaround for that? PS.: I had gone past the steps given in Terrible noises from subwoofer of ACER Aspire 6930 with Realtek sound chip but still I have a bad quality of sound. While in CMD shell, copying files from host OS to guest VM locks files (VMware Player/Workstation)

We're running the latest versions of VMWare Player and Workstation for Windows. The following behavior is identical across both products. Problem: We open a CMD prompt in our guest OS (XP, Vista, Windows 7) and copy files from our host OS using the standard CMD shell copy command: copy z:\C$\testfiles The copy completes successfully, but from that point forward, all the files that were copied to our guest OS are now LOCKED on our host OS. This does not happen if we use Windows Explorer to copy files - it only happens when files are copied via the CMD shell. As mentioned at the start of this question, this behavior is reproducible in both VMWare Player and VMWare Workstation across multiple machines and multiple guest OS's. I've googled for a workaround, but without success. Any ideas appreciated. Malcolm

Problem modifying read-only files on Samba NAS

Hi, I have files on a Samba server in the local company network and accessing them from a Windows Vista machine. Usually, if I want to delete a directory containing write-protected (read-only) files, Windows would ask "This file is read-only, are you sure?". However, when I do this with a dir on the server, Windows just tells me that I need permissions. The workaround is to remove the read-only flag from the directory and all contained files and then deleting. However, I have a TortoiseSVN versioned dir on the server, and the .svn dirs contain read-only files. I need to remove the read-only flags from the dir before every commit, or else it fails. This is quite distressing and shouldn't be so. Does someone know how to attack this problem? (If someone knows how to tell TortoiseSVN to not make its files read-only, that would probably be ok as well) ... Thanks!

How to specify VNC port number with Mac OS X built-in VNC client?

Is it possible to specify VNC port number in built-in VNC client of Mac OS X? I'm trying to connect to Xen VPS machine with Finder's built-in VNC client. I used address like this. vnc://server:port But it fails because it uses another port, and Finder's built-in VNC cannot handle port number. As I know it handles the number after colon as display-number, not a port number. Is there a way to specify port number on the VNC client? Or any workaround for this? (port forwarding??? I have no idea about it...)

Can I use the Office 2007 Proofing Tools with Office 2010 RTM?

Hi, I have just downloaded and installed Office 2010 RTM. Overall, it is very nice, but I miss having proofing tools available for my native language, Danish. I have installed the 2007 Proofing Tools, but they do not work with 2010: For this release we have made significant changes in the proofing infrastructure, therefore the Language Packs from previous Office versions including Office 2007 are not compatible with Office 2010. connect 2.1 stereo speakers to LG LCD-TV (5500 series)

I bought a pair of speakers for my dad's TV, LG 32LE5500. When I installed them, it just sounded worse than the integrated ones and that's where I realized the subwoofer didn't work at all and both speakers make lower volume than the internal ones. The audio output jack says "H/P" (standing for headphones, and a matching symbol) before buying I checked this output with my phone's headphones and it worked so I figured it would work with a set of speakers since it's a standard audio output. I guess it's literally for headphones and not any other kind of sound players. There is only one other audio output and it is the optical-digital, so I can't use that. Not at least with these speakers.. am I screwed? or is there any workaround?
