• Absolutely Nothing Apearing in "Additional Drivers"

  OK so I just got Ubuntu the other month or so. I'm running the 11.04 version currently and trying to install drivers for a Nvidia graphics card (it's my brother's computer and he currently cannot find the number of the card right now). I read that, to install the proper drivers for gaming, I would need to go into "Additional Drivers" and choose them myself. I clicked to go into "Additional Drivers" and it searched "for available drivers", then opened the additional drivers list. Lo and Behold, there was nothing, simply the message "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system" and the Help and Close buttons. Sorry if there's some silly simple answer to all of this, I'm new to this sort of thing (used to Windows simplicity, lol) and I really don't know what to do. Help would be much appreciated. Also, I should mention that the graphics card was installed and ran fine before switching from Windows XP to Ubuntu.

• Is it possible to create and distribute an app for the BlackBerry Playbook that doesn't go into App World?

  My company is looking to create an app that we'll use internally on several (about 20) BlackBerry Playbooks. We don't want it to be put up on App World because it's just an internal application. I'm wondering if there are any: Costs involved with this outside of paying a programmer to develop it - i.e. Are there any license fees, deployment fees, etc. License issues involved with deploying the app to multiple Playbooks without deploying it to App World Limitations on functionality of the app Other things we should be taking into consideration If it matters, the app will be collecting information and downloading it to a computer via USB.

• How to manage two video cards on a laptop that runs Ubuntu 10.10?

  I have a laptop with two video cards. One ATI and on integrated Intel. On Windows, I can choose which video card I want to use. For example, I use the Intel card for normal use and for gaming, I switch to my ATI card for better performance, but a shorter battery life. In Ubuntu 10.10, only the Intel driver is installed, the ATI driver for my card doesn't work at all and there's heat coming out of my computer all the time, like when I'm playing video games on Windows. I think both cards are active, but only the Intel one is usefull. How can I solve this by making sure Ubuntu is aware of the two video cards and by disabling my ATI. Or may be I am all wrong about this?

I worked primarily in data warehousing and business intelligence related software development during my previous occupation. There is a high chance for me to select a research in knowledge representations, ontologies and reasoning, as there are no other research available in any other interesting fields, such as pattern recognition and navigation. I developed an interest towards knowledge representation with what I learnt from the courses I am taking currently. But I do not have a deep understanding of it in terms of which areas such a field would have an impact in a real life scenario, and how it will help me when I am hunting for a job in the near future. • How to play Minecraft Classic?

  First off, I've read through this question: How to install minecraft?. I'm interested in the free web-embedded version (for demo purposes), not the paid and downloaded .jar file. I removed the open-java whatever that Ubuntu prefers to use. I installed sun-java6-jre. Then I ran sudo update-alternatives --config java to ensure I was using Sun's Java. Restarted my browsers, then tried to start the game from: http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp It pops a prompt to make sure I really want to allow direct interaction between minecraft.net and my computer, I agree. The in browser display mumbles something about loading a library, then darkness. The page doesn't crash, ps shows the java plugin process, all seems well except the game doesn't load. I see the same behaviour on Chromium 11.0.662.0 (73963) as Firefox 4 RC1.

• Thoughts on Development using Virtual Machines

  I'll be working as a development lead for a startup and I've suggested that we use VMs for development. I'm not talking about each developer having a desktop with VMs for testing/development, I mean having a server rack where all VMs are managed and have the developers work from a microPC (ChromeOS anyone?) locally, or even remotely from their home computer. To me, the benefits are the fact that it's extremely scalable, cheaper in the long run, easier to manage and that we utilize the hardware its maximum potential. As for cons, I can't think of any particular showstoppers other than we'll need someone to setup/maintain said setup. I was hoping that some of you might of had a similar setup at your place of employment and be able to weight in with your opinions. Thanks.

  While travelling I met a mathematician who was sitting near me. In a discussion he said: "...there is nothing like engineering in IT or rather programming". A true engineering is what Architecture is, what Electrical and Mechanical is. It made me think and I was puzzled. A percent of my brain agreed also because in Indian Army, there is no subject like Computer Engineering in the Engineering Corps. They don't consider programming as engineering. So I thought of a better Idea of installing only the Comice OS Shell in Ubuntu(the Desktop environment of Pear Linux), so that I can select that in the login screen. Is that possible? • Game Engines with real time lighting

  I am studying computer graphics since 3 semesters and we just started with OpenGL. I really enjoy it and want to create my own little engine for learning purposes. I already read tons of different forum posts and saw the following engines. Panda3d, Ogre3d, NeoAxis, Irrlicht and Horde3d(graphics only). Now I don't want to use something like Unity or CryEngine because I want to start more low level. Which of those engines is suited for real-time rendering? Something that CryEngine offers - no baked lightmaps. Or at least gives me the option to add a real-time renderer?

• Typing tutor games with good playablity

  Are there any linux typing tutor games which are enjoyable games in their own right? I'm a computer professional, but have never learned to type properly. I also don't want my kids to pick up my bad habits! The kids are okay with TuxTyping, for a time. Something like Typing of the Dead sounds great, but is Windows only, and as far as I can tell one of a kind. I also don't want the young'uns hooked on first person shooters just yet. So are there any quality typing games for a range of ages?

• Launch a real install of Ubuntu already on another hard-drive in Windows 7 like a VM

  I'm not too familiar with VMs and the like so this may not even be possible. Here is what I have: A real, full install of Windows 7 on hard drive A. A real, full install of Ubuntu 10.04 on hard drive B. Grub allowing me to select what I want to launch when I start up my computer. It would be Amazing if I could do one of two things. Within Windows 7, launch my real install of ubuntu as if it were a VM. That means i would get all the installed software, all of the files, and all of the settings. Launch a VM copy of ubuntu 10.04 but some how make it use all of the installed software and settings from my real copy. Thanks!

• 12.10 x64 - RTL8188CE - Intermittent/Slow Internet Connection

  I have to reset my internet connection often to get it to work. When it does work, it's definitely slower than when I'm on my Windows installation. My computer uses an RTL8188CE wireless card from Realtek. I'm running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 12.10. Power management is not on. I've read on other sites that some people fixed the issue pertaining to this wireless card by downloading and installing the drivers from the Realtek site, but it seems as if that only helped people with 32-bit installations. Anyone have any luck with this specific wireless card?

• How can I break out of ssh when it locks?

  Hi, I frequently ssh into my box at home from school, but usually when I change classes and my computer suspends, the pipe will be broken. However, ssh simply locks up - ^c, ^z and ^d have no effect. It's annoying to have to restart my terminal, and even more annoying to have to close and re-create a new screen window. So my question, is there an easy way to make ssh die properly (i.e. when the pipe fails "normally" it will exit with a message about a broken pipe)? Or do I have to figure out what the PID is and manually kill it? Thanks!

Since I live in Iran there are no counselor or any professionals out there to help me, so I decided to ask here. I started with Visual Basic and after 1 year I started to learn HTML , CSS , Javascript and JQuery. And for the past 6 months I've been learning PHP,and I have a basic understanding of OOP. I want to move to America to continue my studies and I was wondering which programming language helps me the most to get there? Should I learn C++ or JAVA or should I study Computer Science and Math? also since We are not in a good place financially, I want a programming language that helps me in college and lets me make some money? I'm a computer science student and have been learning Flex and Actionscript 3.0 for 4 months. I know it's easy to program in MXML, and Actionscript 3.0 is pretty easy with bunch of classes, but when I try to code in C++ or C, I struggle, I feel I'm being inefficient and it scares me. • I can't get Ubuntu installation to start

  I have a computer with the following configuration: AZUS Sabertooth Motherboard Intel I5 2500 CPU Windows 7 installed I'm trying to install linux. I first attempted to install pin guy. I burned the ISO, booted from it, got the initial menu; attempting to either run the live version from DVD, or install to system. However the process stops at a blank screen with the blinking cursor in left corner. So I downloaded Ubuntu and got the same results. Then I tried wubi and ended up in the same position. EDIT: UEFI might be part of the problem? Based on the link below I have determined that the process will be too time consuming and or risky so I'm giving up. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFIBooting
