• How to eliminate a sub-directory level from all URLs in Website

  I have a website and I just setup an os shopping cart (ie., Magento) I installed the cart in a sub-directory off the document root as /magento/ per the installation guidelines. So my web site cart's URL is http://mydomain.com/magento/ I have no public pages off the document root and I actually want my cart to be my home page -- in other words, I want http://mydomain.com/magento/ to resolve as http://mydomain.com/ Is it possible? Can I use mod-rewrite to make it happen? If so, can you suggest what the mod-rewrite directives would look like? Or is it simply a permanent redirect like: redirect 301 /magento http://mydomain.com/ Thanks.

• Google Chrome Speed Tracer what does Request Timing and Response Timing actually measure?

  I'm testing out the Google Chrome Speed Tracer on a few common web pages and taking a look through the results. One thing I'm not sure I understand is what the "Request Timing" and "Response Timing" properties of resources are actually measuring. Initially I thought Request Timing must measure the time from a request for a resource being sent and when that request arrived at the server. However, I then wondered how the Speed Tracer would actually have any way of measuring this. Furthermore, the Response Timing that I'm getting for resources tends to be far less than the Request Timing (e.g. 500ms request, 1ms response), which is a little bit suss. So is anyone able to explain exactly what Request Timing and Response Timing are measuring?

• Back button loop with IFRAMES

  In my (school) website we use Iframes to display class blogs (on blogger). This works well EXCEPT if the user then clicks on (say) a photo inside the iframe. Blogger (in this case) then displays the photo in the whole browser window and the back button loops; that is if the back button is hit, the browser (IE, FF, Chrome) stays on the same page. The only way out is for the user to jump back two pages (which many of our users don't know how to do). I've read a lot of posts on back buttons and iframes and there doesn't appear to be a simple solution. Bear in mind that I don't have control over the iframe content (so no embedded back buttons in the frame are possible). Ideas anyone?

• Elisp performance on Windows and Linux

  I have the following dead simple elisp functions; the first removes the fill breaks from the current paragraph, and the second loops through the current document applying the first to each paragraph in turn, in effect removing all single line-breaks from the document. It runs fast on my low-spec Puppy Linux box using emacs 22.3 (10 seconds for 600 pages of Thomas Aquinas), but when I go to a powerful Windows XP machine with emacs 21.3, it takes almost an hour to do the same document. • How can I install things in Linux with *no yum* and *no wget*?

  I'm a newbie to Linux (that mainly uses Windows and Mac OS X) needing some advice. I was trying to install git on a Linux machine today, and encountered some problems: Not knowing the version of the installed OS, I've opened the /proc/version file which said: Linux version 2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp ([email protected]) (gcc version 3.4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-3)) #1 SMP Thu Aug 17 17:57:31 EDT 2006 Then, as written in the git documents (http://git-scm.com/download/linux), I assumed I could use the yum install git command for Fedora, but got the following result. [root@myserver ~]# yum install git -bash: yum: command not found So I tried installing yum using wget, but wasn't so lucky. [root@myserver ~]# wget http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/download/2.0/yum-2.0.7.tar.gz -bash: wget: command not found I googled and found this page and this page, so tried installing yum with rpm, but only got a result full of question marks. (Possibly an encoding problem, hmm...) • Site Actions menu in SharePoint is WSS-like, whereas I have installed MOSS

  I had WSS installed on my VM and then uninstalled in order to install MOSS Enterprise I can see a lot of the MOSS stuff in the Central Administration pages but when I create a new web application and site collection, my Site Actions dropdown is showing the WSS version, i.e. Create, Edit Page and Site Settings as opposed to the MOSS menu which has View All Site Content, View Reports, Manage Content and Structure etc. I just tried deleting my web app and creating it all again but it's come back with the same thing again. Is somewhere remembering that I used to have WSS installed? (yes I know MOSS is built on top of WSS but you know what I mean!)

• How do continuously update data to an asp page?

  Hi, I have an asp page based on a very simple database. It references a single table of probably 30 records and maybe 12 data fields and everything works great as I am only uploading a new database every week or so. I have a special circumstance where I would like upload new data to the database and display automatically on the page every 20 to 30 seconds without the user having to refresh their screen. I would expect up to 1000 concurrent users accessing the data. I have been manually uploading the database via ftp, which will obviously not work on this timeline and would also run the risk of error pages as the database is being replaced. So, can anyone point me the right direction to setup this scenario? Other details that might be helpful: The database is an Access database (but I could change to another format if needed) Running on Windows platform hosted by an ISP, not my own server Thanks in advance for any help on this! • Silverlight 4 crashing every browser (SL3 doesn't)

  I am testing my application on a number of machines. It is fine on every machine except 1. I'm having problems with one XP machine where in internet explorer, chrome and firefox the Silverlight plugin crashes on EVERY page with Silverlight. Pages that used to work fine with silverlight 3 crash instantly - including my app and the Silverlight Beta 4 demo page!!! The browser crashes instantly and doesn't even attempt to load the page. I don't know how to debug this because there's no error. It just crashes instantly in all these browsers. Reinistalling, rebooting didn't fix the problem.

  Hello, I have a site at blog.foobar.com that I have closed down, and I want any page requested there to be forwarded to www.foobar.com I want my VirtualHost config to do this for me. I currently have the following lines that does nearly what I want but not exactly: redirect permanent / http://www.foobar.com Unfortunately what happens is that if I ask for blog.foobar.com instead of forwarding to www.foobar.com it serves the pages on blog.foobar.com instead. Is there a way doing this in the VirtualHost config or should I use a .htaccess file instead? Regards Steve

• Does JSONP scale? How many JSONP requests can I send?

  Based on Please explain JSONP, I understand that JSONP can be used to get around the same-origin policy. But in order to do that, the page must use a <script> tag. • PageMethods security

  Hi, I'm trying to 'AJAX-ify' my site in order to improve the UI experience. In terms of performance, I'm also trying to get rid of the UpdatePanel. I've come across a great article over at Encosia showing a way of posting using PageMethods. My question is, how secure are page methods in a production environment? Being public, can anyone create a JSON script to POST directly to the server, or are there cross-domain checks taking place? My PageMethods would also write the data into the database (after filtering). I'm using Forms Authentication in my pages and, on page load, it redirects unauthenticated users to the login page. Would the Page Methods on this page also need to check authentication if the user POSTs directly to the method, or is that authentication inherited for the entire page? (Essentially, does the entire page cycle occur even if a user has managed to post only to the PageMethod)? Thanks

  I'm building a mobile version for my website using Jquery Mobile API. The framework provides automate AJAX navigation processing. But as far as i know it require "real" pages for loading purpose. What i want to do is override the automate navigation process of it and process the hashchange on my own. But i can't not rewrite the url using window.hashChange, which is running well on my non-mobile website version : $(function () { $(window).off().hashchange(function () { if (location.hash.length > 1) { PageSelect(); } }); $(window).hashchange(); }); I just only want to take advantage on jquery mobile interfaces, i don't want anything with its automate ajax navigation stuff ! • trying to decide between asp.net and jsp

  Hey Guys, I am wondering if anyone can shed some lights on the situation. I am about to start a project and trying to figure out what solution is best to go with asp.net or java jsp pages I have personally worked alot with .net and am really happy with the framework and Visual studio as IDE I find it easy to work with and there is a massive community support behind .net, i can get alot done quickly I have not every written anything use java jsp, there will be a learning curve here , so my experience is limited here. however after seeing jira i am very impressed with its capabilities, it has changed alot since the old days ( java 1.2 ) that i used to work with, and the fact that it runs under linux is a huge plus, so i am trying to decide is the learning curve, worth the price ? so given the situation above what would you recommended? So far I have a CSS class for normal and a CSS class for when you hover each item in the list. I want to have a new class for when each list item is selected. So for example in services, the user clicks on "family planning" and when they get to the family planning page....the family planning list item has a grey background. • loading js files dynamically via another js file?

  Hi there, is there anyway to load other JS files from within a single JS file. I would like to point my individual pages "ITS" js file and that js file would load jquery, other js files. I know i can just pop all these into the html i.e. I was thinking of separations of concerns so i was wondering if anything exists already without me reinventing the wheel.... That i would just need to edit home.js to change what other js (jquery etc) are loaded for home.htm ... home.htm would just point to home.js Thanks

  Hi folks, I'm trying to implement a "time ago" feature, for the displaying of items on a site. As I'm caching the pages I wish to use javascript in order to render the "time ago". Javascript knows local time and problably the Timezone of the local machine so I could play with that, but that would require to hard code the server's timezone. Therefore I'm trying to figure out a simple way to pass a ISO 8601 timestamp, in GMT time. Is there any simple and straight forward way for doing this? Help would be much appreciated! =)

• Scrape HTML tables from a given URL into CSV

  I seek a tool that can be run on the command line like so: tablescrape 'http://someURL.foo.com' [n] If n is not specified and there's more than one HTML table on the page, it should summarize them (header row, total number of rows) in a numbered list. If n is specified or if there's only one table, it should parse the table and spit it to stdout as CSV or TSV. Potential additional features: To be really fancy you could parse a table within a table, but for my purposes -- fetching data from wikipedia pages and the like -- that's overkill. The Perl module HTML::TableExtract can do this and may be good place to start for writing the tool I have in mind. An option to asciify any unicode. An option to apply an arbitrary regex substitution for fixing weirdnesses in the parsed table. • Ajax cache control

  Hello, I am having a problem with ajax requests in Internet Explorer and in Chrome - I cannot bust the cache. Normal pages don't have the problem - it's just the ajax requests. I know that one workaround is to append a random query string variable to the end of the URL. However, I don't want to lose all the benefits of caching, I just want the browser to pick up the new file if the version on the server is different from the cached version. I have tried manually setting the ajax POST header, to no avail: xmlHttp.setRequestHeader("Cache-Control", "must-revalidate"); Adding this to my .htaccess file doesn't work either: <FilesMatch "\.(js|css).*" Header set Cache-Control: "max-age=172800, public, must-revalidate" </FilesMatch Any help would be greatly appreciated. • internet explorer ashx file problem

  My problem is a bit complicated: I am writing in c#, asp.net and using jquery I have a page that sends requests to the server using jquery's ajax method. I have a ashx file (handler) to respond to these request. User can perform several changes on several pages, then use some method that will call the ajax method. My ashx file reads some values From the session variables and acts accordingly. This works fine in all browsers but in internet explorer. In internet explorer the session seems to hold old information (old user ids'). It's incredible, the same code works fine in firefox, chrome and safari but fails with ie. What could be causing it? I have no clue where to even start looking for a solution. btw, Sorry for the general title, couldn't figure out how to explain in just few words. Thank You!
