• Forms&Reports upgrade characterset issues

  Hello,This quick post is based on my findings during recent IMC workshops, especially those related to upgrading the Forms 6i/9i/10g applications to Forms 11g platform. The upgrade process itself is pretty straightforward and it basically requires recompiling your Forms application with a latest version of frmcmp tool. For some cases though, especially when you migrate from Forms 6i which is a client-server architecture to a 3-tier web solution (Forms 11g), you need to rewrite some parts of your code to make it run on new platform. The things you need to change range from reimplementing (using webutil library) typical client-site functionality like local IO operation, access to WinAPI, invoking DLLs etc. to changing deprecated or obsolete APIs like RUN_PRODUCT to RUN_REPORT_OBJECT. To automate those changes Oracle provides complete Java API  which allows you to manipulate the code and structure of you modules (JDAPI). To make it even easier we can use Forms Migration Assistant tool (written in Java using JDAPI) which is able to replace all occurrences of old API entries with their 11g equivalents or warn you when the replacement is not possible. You can also add your own replacement definitions in the search_replace.properties file. But you need to be aware of some issues that can be encountered using this tool. First of all if you are using some hard-coded text inside your triggers you may notice that after processing them by the Migration Assistant tool the national characters may be lost. This is due to the fact that you need to explicitly tell Java application (which MA really is) what kind of characterset it should use to read those text properly. In order to do that just add to a script calling MA the following line:  export JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS=-Dfile.encoding=<JAVA_ISO_ENCODING>  when the particular encoding must match the NLS_LANG in your Forms Builder environment (for example for Polish characterset you need to use ISO-8859-2).Second issue you can encounter related to national charactersets is lack of national symbols in you reports after migration. This can be solved by adding appropriate NLS_LANG entry in your reports environment. Sometimes instead of particular characterset you see "Greek characters" in your reports. This is just default font used by reports engine instead of the one defined in your report. To solve it you must copy fonts definitions from your old environment (e.g. Forms 10g installation) to appropriate directory in new installation (usually AFM folder).   I recently installed Ubuntu through Wubi and I love it enough I am ready to ditch windows! My set up is like this. Drive 1: 80 gig ssd Win7 Drive 2: 320 gig hdd Ubuntu (installed through wubi) Drive 3: 1000 TB NTFS media drive What I want to do is move the Ubuntu install from the 320 gig hard drive to my ssd and totally get rid of Windows. Would be great if I could preserve my current Ubuntu install during the process since its finally working :-) Thanks! Nathan

  A lot of people both internal to Oracle and customers keep asking about when should OWSM be used vs. OEG. Sometime back I posted Oracle's vision for layered SOA security Here is a quick summary: Use OWSM in Green Zone Use OEG in Red Zone (DMZ) If you need end-to-end security in which case they will want both OWSM and OEG. This is the topology I would recommend for most customers. If you need only Green Zone security - then use OWSM in conjunction with Oracle FMW products like SOA Suite, OSB, ADF, WLS, BI, etc both on the Client Side and Service Side (assuming you are using FMW technologies for both Clients and Services). If you need only Red Zone security - then use OEG on the Service Side. You can use OWSM for the Client Side if you are using FMW to build your clients.

• Permanent redirect to different domain followed by temporary redirect to folder

  I have old-domain.com which I want to migrate to new-domain.com. However, the content on the old domain is, well, old. And I'm currently in the process of redesigning my whole site. My idea is to do a permanent (301) redirect from old-domain.com to new-domain.com so that search engines know about the new domain and forget about the old one. But since the content is old I was thinking to do a temporary (302) redirect from new-domain.com to new-domain.com/old/ until the new content/site is ready to be published. Is this, for some reason, a bad idea? Or there's nothing wrong with it? One last thing... If I go with this, what should I do when the new content is ready? Should I just remove the 302 redirect and that's it, or should I do something else to notify search engines that the temporary redirect is over?

I don't personally code, but I want to pay professionals to do it. I'm wondering how I should go about paying them. Yes, this will be a large project, but I want it done ASAP. Is it ok if I don't pay them by the hour? I really want it to be a set price. Also, is it reasonable to pay them in stock of the company? Like, 20%? P.S. • What precautions should I take when moving a hard drive from one computer to another?

Standardize and Consolidate core Enterprise Applications by removing invasive customizations, costly workarounds and the complexity that multiple instances creates. 2. Move business specific processes and applications to the Differentiate Layer, thus creating greater business agility with process extensions and best of breed applications managed by cross- application process orchestration. 3. The Innovate Layer contains all the business capabilities required for engagement, collaboration and intuitive decision making. This is the layer where innovation will occur, as people engage one another in a secure yet open and informed way. 4. Simplify IT by minimizing complexity, improving performance and lowering cost with secure, reliable and managed systems across the entire Enterprise. But what hasn’t been discussed is the pace layered architecture that Oracle AppAdvantage adopts. What is it, what are its origins and why is it relevant to enterprise scale applications and technologies? It’s actually a fascinating tale that spans the past 20 years and a basic understanding of it provides a wonderful context to what is evolving as the future of enterprise systems platforms. It all begins in 1994 with a book by noted architect Stewart Brand, of ’Whole Earth Catalog’ fame. In his 1994 book How Buildings Learn, Brand popularized the term ‘Shearing Layers’, arguing that any building is actually a hierarchy of pieces, each of which inherently changes at different rates. In 1997 he produced a 6 part BBC Series adapted from the book, in which Part 6 focuses on Shearing Layers. In this segment Brand begins to introduce the concept of ‘pace’. Brand further refined this idea in his subsequent book, The Clock of the Long Now, which began to link the concept of Shearing Layers to computing and introduced the term ‘pace layering’, where he proposes that: “An imperative emerges: an adaptive [system] has to allow slippage between the differently-paced systems … otherwise the slow systems block the flow of the quick ones and the quick ones tear up the slow ones with their constant change. Embedding the systems together may look efficient at first but over time it is the opposite and destructive as well.” In 2000, IBM architects Ian Simmonds and David Ing published a paper entitled A Shearing Layers Approach to Information Systems Development, which applied the concept of Shearing Layers to systems design and development. It argued that at the time systems were still too rigid; that they constrained organizations by their inability to adapt to changes. The findings in the Conclusions section are particularly striking: “Our starting motivation was that enterprises need to become more adaptive, and that an aspect of doing that is having adaptable computer systems. The challenge is then to optimize information systems development for change (high maintenance) rather than stability (low maintenance). Our response is to make it explicit within software engineering the notion of shearing layers, and explore it as the principle that systems should be built to be adaptable in response to the qualitatively different rates of change to which they will be subjected. This allows us to separate functions that should legitimately change relatively slowly and at significant cost from that which should be changeable often, quickly and cheaply.” The problem at the time of course was that this vision of adaptable systems was simply not possible within the confines of 1st generation ERP, which were conceived, designed and developed for standardization and compliance. It wasn’t until the maturity of open, standards based integration, and the middleware innovation that followed, that pace layering became an achievable goal. And Oracle is leading the way. Oracle’s AppAdvantage framework makes pace layering come alive by taking a strategic vision 20 years in the making and transforming it to a reality. It allows enterprises to retain and even optimize their existing ERP systems, while wrapping around those ERP systems three layers of capabilities that inherently adapt as needed, at a pace that’s optimal for the enterprise.

• What tools should I consider if my strategy is to make a game available to as many platforms as possible?

  We're planning on developing a 2D, grid-based puzzle game, and although it's still very early in the planning stages, we'd like to make our decisions well from the beginning. Our strategy will be to make the game available to as many platforms as possible, for example PCs (Windows, Mac and/or Linux), mobile phones (iPhone and/or Android based phones), game consoles (XBLA and/or PSN) PC will have an emphasis, but I believe that's the most flexible platform so that shouldn't be a problem. So, what programming language, game engine, frameworks and all around tools would be best suited for our goal? P.S.: I'm betting a set of tools won't cover ALL of them, and that there will still be some kind of "translating" effort for some platforms, but we'd like to know what the most far reaching are.

  Yesterday I got one strange report that on Agile 9.3.1.2, adding a Supplier into Item's Supplier tab will always remove all the data from Item.PageTwo.MultiList01 field which is assigned to a User Group list. The detailed problem description is like below. In JavaClient, MultiList01 attribute on Parts class's PageTwo tab is enabled and assigned with User Group list. On WebClient, user created a new Part and assign MultiList01 with two UserGroups: "Global User Group Test1" and "Personal Group_Test1". Then go to Suppliers tab to add three Suppliers. Switch back to Part's TitleBlock, will see MultiList01 loses the User Group data. To confirm if MultiList01 really loses the data or it saves with other wrong data, I need to check the database and find strange data that MultiList01 saves wrong data ",7976911,7976907,7976959,", which are exactly the ID of these three Suppliers. Then I can suspect the Supplier attribute on Suppliers tab must be mapped to MultiList01. However when I check Supplier in JavaClient, the "ASL mapped to" is blank. More interesting thing is the database clearly shows Supplier attribute (Base ID =2000004219) is mapped to 2090, which is PageTwo.MultiList01 Base ID. Till now, we can get a conclusion that Supplier data is really mapped to MultiList01, though we assign MultiList01 to User Group list and Supplier does not set "ASL mapped to". It must be another function which overrides "ASL mapped to" visibility in JavaClient with high priority. That is the "Change Controlled" function. We immediately see "ASL mapped to" with value "MultiList01" when we disable Change Controlled for Multilist01 If one attribute is Change Controlled, Supplier data cannot be mapped to this attribute theoretically because Supplier could be dynamically modified by users, not by Changes. In real situation of Agile 9.3.1.2, it could be a Code Defect. We can imagine the scenario customer met. He setup Parts.PageTwo.Multilist01 assigned with Supplier list, then in Parts.Suppliers.Supplier attribute, he set "ASL mapped to" to "Multilist01". Later company business is changed, so he set Multilist01 with Change Controlled and re-assign with User Group list. He forgot to remove "ASL mapped to" before he did modifications to Multilist01. Finally we know the solution, it depends on real business. If still need to mapping Supplier to Parts.PageTwo attribute, should modify "ASL mapped to" to other one attribute which already has assigned with Suppliers list. If do not need "ASL mapped to" function, should delete the data from database level. We cannot do it from JavaClient UI. delete propertytable where id in (select p.id from propertytable p, nodetable n where p.parentid =n.id and n.inherit=2000004219 and propertyid=794)

  I currently run the site https://www.example.co.uk and I'm considering migrating to https://www.example.uk to take advantage of the new shorter domain. When migrating the domain in Google Webmaster Tools...will all the authority from the old domain pass if I use 301 redirects? Does anyone know how all the reviews I have collected will get transferred to the new domain when using the AdWords seller ratings? Any other important issues to be wary of when migrating to the new domain?
