• Returning a flexible datatype from a C++ function

  I'm developing for a legacy C++ application which uses ODBC for it's data access. Coming from a C# background, I really miss the ADO style of data access. I'm writing a wrapper (because we can't actually use ADO) to make our data access less painful. This means no char arrays, no manual text blob streaming, and no declaritive column binding. I'm struggling with how to store / return data values. In C# at least, you can declare an object and cast it to whatever (as long as the type is convertable). My current C++ solution is to use boost::any to store the data value in a custom DataColumnValue object. This class has conversion and assignment operators to the various types used in our app (more than 10). There's a bit of complexity here because if you store an int in the boost::any and try to boost::any_cast<long> you get a boost::bad_any_cast. Client objects shouldn't have to know how the value is stored internally. Does anyone have any experience trying to store / return values whose types are only known at runtime? Is there a better / cleaner way?

• Is application-specific data required for good unit testing?

  I am writing unit tests for a fairly simple function that depends on a fairly complicated set of data. Essentially, the object I am manipulating represents a graph and this function determines whether to chart a line, bar, or pie chart based on the data that came back from the server. I'm afraid that fabricating data will not expose bugs arising from changes in the database, but on the other hand, it would require a lot more effort to keep the test data up-to-date that I'm not sure is necessary.

• Best way to solve the game 'bricolage'

  I am trying to solve the following game http://www.hacker.org/brick/ using some kind of AI. The target of this game is to finally clear the board by clicking on groups of at least 3 bricks of the same color and removing them. If a group is disappearing the remaining bricks above will fall down or be moved left if a column got no bricks left. The higher the level - more colors and larger board. I already guessed that a pure bruteforce approach wont scale nice for higher levels. So i tried to implement a monte carlo like approach which worked ok for the first levels. But i am still not confident i will make the maximum level of 1052 with this. Currently i am stuck @~ level 100 :) The finding of the solution takes too much time... Hoping that there is a better way to do this i read some stuff about neural networks but i am really at the beginning of this. Before becoming obsessed by ANNs i want to be sure it is the right way for my problem. So my question is: Does it make any sense to apply an ANN to this game? Any suggestions?

• You cannot do cross joins in SQL Azure but there is a way around that....

  So I was asked today how to do cross joins in SQL Azure using Linq. Well the simple answer is you cant do it. It is not supported but there are ways around that. The solution is actually very simple and easy to implement. So here is what I did and how I did it. I created two SQL Azure Databases. The first Database is called AccountDb and has a single table named Account, which has an ID, CompanyId and Name in it. The second database I called CompanyDb and it contains two tables. The first table I named Company and the second I named Address. The Company Table has an Id and Name column. The Address Table has an Id and CompanyId columns. Since we cannot do cross joins in Azure we have to have one of the models preloaded with data. I simply put the Accounts into a List of accounts and use that in my join.   var accounts = new AccountsModelContainer().Accounts.ToList(); var companies = new CompanyModelContainer().Companies; var query = from account in accounts             join company in                 (                       from c in companies                      select c                  ) on account.CompanyId equals company.Id             select new AccountView() {                                               AccountName = account.Name, CompanyName = company.Name,                                 Addresses = company.Addresses                         }; return query.ToList();   So as long as you have your data loaded from one of the contexts you can still execute your queries and get the data back that you want.

• Matching users based on a series of questions

  I'm trying to figure out a way to match users based on specific personality traits. Each trait will have its own category. I figure in my user table I'll add a column for each category: id name cat1 cat2 cat3 1 Sean ? ? ? 2 Other ? ? ? Let's say I ask each user 3 questions in each category. For each question, you can answer one of the following: No, Maybe, Yes How would I calculate one number based off the answers in those 3 questions that would hold a value I can compare other users to? I was thinking having some sort of weight. Like: No -> 0 Maybe -> 1 Yes -> 2 Then doing some sort of meaningful calculation. I want to end up with something like this so I can query the users and find who matches close: id name cat1 cat2 cat3 1 Sean 4 5 1 2 Other 1 2 5 In the situation above, the users don't really match. I'd want to match with someone with a +1 or -1 of my score in each category. I'm not a math guy so I'm just looking for some ideas to get me started.

• CCMoveBy values on update()

  Hope you can help me. This is my problem: I have a scheduled update, here I track the movements of my objects (sprites), I move them with CCMoveBy, and I need to constantly update the zOrder. For setting the zOrder I've made a setZOrder(), which it takes the actual position of the sprite. And here is the problem, I get all the X and Y values AFTER the object is in the target. I know I get the values after the object is in the new position because I've made a CCLog. I can read all the values from the sprite, only when it's in the new position, so everything is well sorted only when the objects are not moving. How can I get the CCMoveBy values on every tick update? (or how can I get the CCMoveBy values in "real-time"?) • Localization of Database Strings in .Net

  I have several database tables that have a description column that I need to display in the UI. .Net has .resx files that will help with the translation of the strings, when the Thread.CurrentCulture.UICulture is set, but I needed a custom approach for the strings that are stored in the database and not in the .resx files. Here’s my approach: 1. Create a resource file for each database table and put them in the /Resources/Database/ directory. 2. Create a method in LocalizationHelpers (GetLocalizedString) that will get the string from the table for English (which should be cached to avoid unneeded service/database calls) or the resx when not English. 3. All database tables need to have a ResxKey field that matches the key in the resx file. 4. By convention the resx file will have the same name as the database table, and the key the same as the database ResxKey.   - if there are multiple columns that need translation, then one ResxKey will be used and Name or Description appended. • How can I guarantee a solvable Fifteen Puzzle shuffle?

  I am making a 15 Puzzle game in C# that allows the user to enter a custom row and column value up to a maximum of a 10 x 10 puzzle. I am having problems with the shuffle method. I want to make it so the puzzle is always solvable by first creating a winning puzzle then shuffling the empty space. The problem is it is too inefficient to call every click event each time. I need a way to invoke the click event of a button adjacent to the empty space but not diagonal. I also use an invisible static button for the empty spot. The PuzzlePiece class inherits from Button. I am not too sure how to do this. It only applies to the x64 build of my project, x86 still works fine. Apparently, it tries to build a x64 interop assembly from the x86 DLL located in "C:\Assemblies". When executing the TlbImp command with the x64 DLL which is located in a different directory, it works fine. However, I don't know how I can configure my project to use different COM references for the x86 and x64 build. The OS on which the project is being compiled is WinXP x86. Building worked fine when using VS2005 + MSBuild 3.5 Any help would be highly appreciated. I tried building the upgraded project with MSBuild v3.5, but that doesn't work either. It complains about unknown NoWarn codes (probably new in 4.0).

• Help With Database Layout

  Hello everyone, I am working on a site similar to Craigslist where users can make postings and sell items in different cities. One difference between my site and Craigslist will be you will be able to search by zip code instead of having all of the cities listed on the page. I already have the ZIP Code database that has all of the city, state, latitude, longitude, and zip code info for each city. Okay, so to dive into what I need done and what I need help with: 1.) Although I have the ZIP Code database, it is not setup perfectly for my use. (I downloaded it off of the internet for free from http://zips.sourceforge.net/) 2.) I need help setting up my database structure (Ex: How many different tables should I use and how should I link them) I will be using PHP and MySQL. These our my thoughts so far on how the database can be setup: (I am not sure if this will work though.) Scenario: Someone goes to the homepage and it will tell them, "Please enter your ZIP Code.". If they enter "17241" for example, this ZIP Code is for a city named Newville located in Pennsylvania. The query would look like this with the current database setup: SELECT city FROM zip_codes WHERE zip = 17241; The result of the query would be "Newville". The problem I see here now is when they want to post something in the Newville section of the site, I will have to have an entire table setup just for the Newville city postings. There are over 42,000 cities which means I would have to have over 42,000 tables (one for each city) so that would be insane to have to do it that way. One way I was thinking of doing it was to add a column to the ZIP Code database called "city_id" which would be a unique number assigned to each city. So for example, the city Newville would have a city_id of 83. So now if someone comes and post a listing in the city Newville I would only need one other table. That one other table would be setup like this: CREATE TABLE postings ( posting_id INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, for_sale LONGTEXT NULL, for_sale_date DATETIME NULL, for_sale_city_id INT NULL, jobs LONGTEXT NULL, jobs_date DATETIME NULL, jobs_city_id INT NULL, PRIMARY KEY(posting_id) ); (The for_sale and job_ column names are categories of the types of postings users will be able to list under. There will be many more categories than just those two but this is just for example.) So now when when someone comes to the website and they are looking for something to buy and not sell, they can enter their ZIP Code, 17241, for example, and this is the query that will run: SELECT city, city_id FROM zip_codes WHERE zip = 17241; //Result: Newville 83 (Please note that I will be using PHP to store the ZIP Code the user enters in SESSIONS and Cookies to remember them throughout the site) Now it will tell them, "Please choose your category.". If they choose the category "Items For Sale" then this is the query to run and sort the results: SELECT posting_id, for_sale, for_sale_date FROM postings WHERE for_sale_city_id = $_SESSION['zip_code']; Will this work? So now my question to everyone is will this work? I am pretty sure it will but I do not want to set this thing up and realize I overlooked something and have to start from all over from scratch. Any opinions and ideas are welcomed and I will listen to anyone who has some thoughts. I really appreciate the help in advance :D

• Why does WPF Style to show validation errors in ToolTip work for a TextBox but fails for a ComboBox?

BindingExpression:Path=(0)[0].ErrorContent; DataItem='ComboBox' (Name='ownerComboBox'); target element is 'ComboBox' (Name='ownerComboBox'); target property is 'ToolTip' (type 'Object') ArgumentOutOfRangeException:'System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Specified argument was out of the range of valid values.Parameter name: index' Oddly it also attempts to make invalid Database changes when I close the window if I change any ComboBox values (This is also when the binding error occurs)!!! Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'EmpFirstName', table 'OITaskManager.dbo.Employees'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails. The statement has been terminated. Simply by commenting the style out everyting works perfectly. How do I fix this? • Silverlight: Scrolling with a StackPanel

  I have a grid, 3 by 3 (3 rowdefinitions and 3 columndefinitions). I want some content (a StackPanel) in one of those grid cells to scroll. I'm fairly sure this is possible but I cannot figure out how. I've tried adding ScrollViewers and Scrollbar controls to the grid cell I want to scroll, but this usually ends up creating scrolling for the entire page. Edit: My issue is more specificlly how I can get scrolling over a StackPanel. My Entity Framework already contains the object model for this table : I just want to generate the corresponding table using a command. (By the way, there is maybe a better way to do this. • In WPF, how do I get a command in a Control Template to bind to a property in a parent?

  I am relatively new to WPF and sometimes it makes my head explode. However, I do like the power behind it, especially when used with the MVVM model. I have a control template that contains a button. I use that control template inside of a custom control. I want to add a property on the custom control that will bind to the command property of the button inside the control template. Basically, it is a combo box with a button to the right of it to allow a user to pop up a search dialog. Since this control could appear on a usercontrol multiple times, I need to be able to potentially bind each control to a different command (Searh products, search customers, etc). Now I want to hide (Visibility.Collapse) some items depending on wether a node has children or not. Other items shall be visible under the same condition. It works like charm when I first bind the source tree to the TreeView, but when I change the source tree, the visibility in the treeview does not change. I got an error stating: 'ResourceDictionary' root element requires a x:Class attribute to support event handlers in the XAML file. Either remove the event handler for the Executed event, or add a x:Class attribute to the root element. Which I think means that there is no code-behind file for a ResourceDictionary, or something to that effect. In any event, I'm not sure if I should be using Commands here, or somehow tying events to the Rectangle in question, or if this is even possible. I've seen various places where it sure looks like it's possible, I'm just unable to translate what I'm seeing into something that actually works, hence this post. Thanks in advance.

• Silverlight 3.0 Custom Cursor in Chart

  Hello All, I'm probably overlooking something that will be obvious when I see the solution, but for now... I am attempting to use a custom cursor inside the chart area of a Toolkit chart. I have created a ControlTemplate for the chart, and a grid to contain the cursors. I show/hide the cursors, and attempt to move the containing Grid, using various Mouse events. The cursor is being displayed at the correct times, but I cannot get it to move to the correct position. • My VARCHAR(MAX) field is capping itself at 4000; what gives?

  Hello all... I have a table in one of my databases which is a queue of emails. Emails to certain addresses get accumulated into one email, which is done by a sproc. In the sproc, I have a table variable which I use to build the accumulated bodies of the emails, and then loop through to send each email. In my table var I have my body column defined as VARCHAR(MAX), seeing as there could be any number of emails currently accumulated for a given email address. It seems though that even though my column is defined as VARCHAR(MAX) it is behaving as if it were VARCHAR(4000) and is truncating the data going into it, although it does NOT throw any exceptions, it just silently stops concatenating any more data after 4000 characters. The MERGE statement is where it is building the accumulated email body into @EMAILS.BODY, which is the field that is truncating itself at 4000 characters. Below is the code of my sproc... • Databinding to ObservableCollection in a different UserControl - how to preserve current selections?

  Scope of question expanded on 2010-03-25 I ended up figuring out my problem, but here's a new problem that came up as a result of solving the original question, because I want to be able to award the bounty to someone!!! Once I figured out my problem, I soon found out that when the ObservableCollection updates, the databound ComboBox has its contents repopulated, but most of the selections have been blanked out. I assume that in this case, MVVM is going to make it difficult for me to remember the last selected item. I have an idea, but it seems a little nasty. I'll award the bounty to whomever comes up with a nice solution for this! Question re-written on 2010-03-24 I have two UserControls, where one is a dialog that has a TabControl, and the other is one that appears within said TabControl. I'll just call them CandyDialog and CandyNameViewer for simplicity's sake. There's also a data management class called Tracker that manages information storage, which for all intents and purposes just exposes a public property that is an ObservableCollection. As long as CandyNames is populated first, and then the consumer UserControl is displayed, all of the names are there. I obviously don't get any errors in the Output Window or anything like that. The issue I have is that when the ObservableCollection is modified from the model, those changes are not reflected in the consumer UserControl! I've never had this problem before; all of my previous uses of ObservableCollection updated fine, although in those cases I wasn't databinding across assemblies. Although I am currently only adding and removing candy names to/from the ObservableCollection, at a later date I will likely also allow renaming from the model side. Is there something I did wrong? Is there a good way to actually debug this? Reed Copsey indicates here that inter-UserControl databinding is possible. Unfortunately, my favorite Bea Stollnitz article on WPF databinding debugging doesn't suggest anything that I could use for this particular problem.
