• SSIS Prehistory video

  I’m currently wasting spending my Easter bank holiday putting together my presentation SSIS Dataflow Performance Tuning for the upcoming SQL Bits conference in London and in doing so I’m researching some old material about how the dataflow actually works. Boring as it is I’ve gotten easily sidelined and have chanced upon an old video on Channel 9 entitled Euan Garden - Tour of SQL Server Team (part I). Euan is a former member of the SQL Server team and in this series of videos he walks the halls of the SQL Server building on Microsoft’s Redmond campus talking to some of the various protagonists and in this one he happens upon the SQL Server Integration Services team. The video was shot in 2004 so this is a fascinating (to me anyway) glimpse into the development of SSIS from before it was ever shipped and if you’re a geek like me you’ll really enjoy this behind-the-scenes look into how and why the product was architected. The video is also notable for the presence of the cameraman – none other than the now-rather-more-famous-than-he-was-then Robert Scoble. • Writing a Book, and Moving my Blog

  I started blogging about SQL Server here at SQLblog back in July, 2009 and it was a lot of fun, I enjoyed it a lot. Then later, after a series of blog posts about the Query Optimizer, I was invited to write an entire book about that same topic. But after a few months I realized that it was going to be hard to continue both blogging and writing chapters for a book, this in addition to my regular day job, so I decided to stop blogging for a little while.   Now that I have finished the last chapter of the book and I am working on the final chapter reviews, I decided to start blogging again. • How to Monitor the Bandwidth Consumption of Individual Applications

  Yesterday we showed you how to monitor and track your total bandwidth usage, today we’re back to show you how to keep tabs on individual applications and how much bandwidth they’re gobbling up. We’ve received several reader requests, both by email and in the aforementioned post about bandwidth tracking, for a good way to track the data consumption of individual applications.   Anthony Lye showcased Oracle Fusion CRM at a BAFTA gathering, and MyCustomer.com covered the story under the title of "Has Oracle written the script for CRM success?' According to MyCustomer.com, "Oracle's SVP of CRM Anthony Lye set the scene for the event, suggesting products are becoming commoditized, so that the only way to differentiate is through the relationship with the customer. But he warned that "customers are more and more in control of that relationship, so you have to provide great experiences for them." "The quickest win within your organization to create a single view is to connect your marketing organization with your selling organization, align goals, processes, people and technology," Anthony explained.   "And this is a transition that is already happening - "VPs of marketing have started turning up in the same meetings as VPs of sales, we have started to see that they want to work together" - but this convergence needs nurturing." "In Fusion there are capabilities to align the organisation - we enable marketing on the same platform to build campaigns connected to sales stages. It can affect leads and opportunities at the top end of the funnel. • Fixing /etc/shadow with md5 passwords to sha512 passwords

  I recently upgraded an ubuntu server with many users to a recent version from a version from 2008. The server used to use md5 password hashes (e.g., the shadow passwords began with $1$) and now is configured to use sha512. I'd prefer to keep using sha512, but would like the old users to be able to partially login once with their old password and then be forced to update their password (even if its the same password) generating a sha512. Right now, the old md5-based passwords in /etc/shadow won't let the user login at all (and just appear to be incorrect passwords). This seems like plenty of people should have had to do this before; yet I can't see how to do it, looking in the common places like /etc/pam.d/common-password nad /etc/login.defs. Also users will be logging in via ssh; and I do not have everyone's contact info (email or otherwise); and some login fairly rarely. Any help? (Googling doesn't seem to give any good solutions).

• SQL SERVER – DATEDIFF – Accuracy of Various Dateparts

  I recently received the following question through email and I found it very interesting so I want to share it with you. “Hi Pinal, In SQL statement below the time difference between two given dates is 3 sec, but when checked in terms of Min it says 1 Min (whereas the actual min is 0.05Min) SELECT DATEDIFF(MI,'2011-10-14 02:18:58' , '2011-10-14 02:19:01') AS MIN_DIFF Is this is a BUG in SQL Server ?” Answer is NO. It is not a bug; it is a feature that works like that. Let us understand that in a bit more detail. When you instruct SQL Server to find the time difference in minutes, it just looks at the minute section only and completely ignores hour, second, millisecond, etc. So in terms of difference in minutes, it is indeed 1. The following will also clear how DATEDIFF works: SELECT DATEDIFF(YEAR,'2011-12-31 23:59:59' , '2012-01-01 00:00:00') AS YEAR_DIFF The difference between the above dates is just 1 second, but in terms of year difference it shows 1. If you want to have accuracy in seconds, you need to use a different approach. In the first example, the accurate method is to find the number of seconds first and then divide it by 60 to convert it to minutes. SELECT DATEDIFF(second,'2011-10-14 02:18:58' , '2011-10-14 02:19:01')/60.0 AS MIN_DIFF Even though the concept is very simple it is always a good idea to refresh it. We've been having some interesting conversations with customers about this release at conferences, advisory board meetings, and technical group meetings. However, we would like to solicit some examples and success stories from you, our broad customer base. Do you have some examples of how you are using PeopleTools 8.50 and Enterprise Portal 9.1 that you would be willing to share? We would like to see some screen shots and perhaps a short blurb describing how you are using the Tools and Portal features, as well as any benefits accrued. Do you have a compelling success story? We are particularly interested in hearing about quantifiable improvements in user productivity, performance, cost savings, etc. You should be aware that these screen shots and stories will be public, and could appear in a conference presentation at some point. • Site too large to officially use Google Analytics?

  We just got this email from the Google Analytics team: We love that you love our product and use it as much as you do. We have observed however, that a website you are tracking with Google Analytics is sending over 1 million hits per day to Google Analytics servers. This is well above the "5 million pageviews per month per account" limit specified in the Google Analytics Terms of Service. Processing this amount of data multiple times a day takes up valuable resources that enable us to continue to develop the product for all Google Analytics users. As such, starting August 23rd, 2010, the metrics in your reports will be updated once a day, as opposed to multiple times during the course of the day. You will continue to receive all the reports and features in Google Analytics as usual. The only change will be that data for a given day will appear the following day. We trust you understand the reasons for this change. I totally respect this decision, and I think it's very generous to not kick us out. But how do we do this the right way -- what's the official, blessed Google way to use Google Analytics if you're a "whale" website with lots of hits per day? Or, are there other analytics services that would be more appropriate for very large websites?

• Last Night's Phoenix Silverlight UserGroup Meeting -- thanks!

  14 of us gathered last night for a great presentation. As advertised, Les Brown of Sogeti came out to talk to us about the 4.0 enhancements, and brought along a new graduate and fellow-worker Chris Ross (Congratulations on your degree, again). Good discussion about MEF and Les' approach to using it, all of which is available on CodePlex along with other fun things Les has done, for example: FileUpload Control, FlipPanel, Animation Extensions, etc., and also his CodeCamp material. As it turned out I only had one give-away with me, but that was worth probably close to everything I've given away so far: a Telerik Ultimate License graciously provided by Telerik: I also have a Sitefinity license to use on our site from Telerik, but I've been jammed up and haven't had the time to devote to getting it cooking. I included Les and Chris in my spreadsheet for randomly selecting swag awardees, and Chris ended up the winner... Being a presenter, a new graduate, and new job, I thought it was appropriate. Let's not forget our host, Interface Technical Training for taking the burden of providing a facility for us off my agenda. I've been to User Group meetings in many places, but the ITT facilities are the best, so thanks! Also thanks to everyone that came out... we had some new people and some regulars. I have a speaker for August but not July, so if you have something to present, send me an email. Thanks!

• List SQL Server Instances using the Registry

  I read this interesting article on using PowerShell and the registry, and thought I would modify his information a bit to list the SQL Server Instances on a box. The interesting thing about listing instances this was is that you can touch remote machines, find the instances when they are off and so on. Anyway, here’s the scriptlet I used to find the Instances on my system: $MachineName = '.' $reg = [Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey]::OpenRemoteBaseKey('LocalMachine', $MachineName) $regKey= $reg.OpenSubKey("SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Microsoft SQL Server\\Instance Names\\SQL" ) $regkey.GetValueNames() You can read more of his article to find out the reason for the remote registry call and so forth – there are also security implications here for being able to read the registry. Script Disclaimer, for people who need to be told this sort of thing: Never trust any script, including those that you find here, until you understand exactly what it does and how it will act on your systems. Ted is well-known in the SQL Server world, having written books on indexing, consulting and on being a DBA (not to mention contributing chapters to both MVP Deep Dives books). • Ubuntu eats itself after I followed updater instruction

  Updater (I assume) put a no entry style alert icon on the panel which informed me that certain package dependencies were not up to snuff. Upgrades were thereafter only partial. The dialogue advised that I (and this is from noob memory) sudo apt-get install -f. I did this and typed in the confirmation phrase and watched apt-get systematically remove every component of linux, both the stuff I installed and the core ubuntu packages. I could only assume at this stage that this was for a fresh install but of course, I know better now. There's much complaint about Windows, but I've never met with advice from Microsoft tools to wipe out the operating system because of a couple of missing .dlls. So what gives? This was a 64 bit install of 12.04. All that is left is grub pointing to a couple of windows recovery partitions on the hard drive. I'm tempted, but I have hopes of recovering the data that I had enough misguided faith to trust to the linux ext4 partition. I've tried pen driving back into it with a 32 bit iso but I'm simply informed that ubuntu is running in low graphics mode and get to watch the dots cycle indefinitely. EDIT: Thanks for the advice vis positive request. I've got onto the machine with a 64 bit stick and can see the file structure left behind by the installation. My first instinct was to run install from the stick but it did not seem to offer a recovery option. My question then: is there a way to recover the current installation so that if I reinstall the packages I had they will pick up the original settings. I'm particularly worried about losing email from evolution - the rest I could probably lash back together. I would also be interested how this disaster came about. I see people in the know recommending this same procedure in similar circumstances. Thanks for your attention, Tony Martin

  Dear Friends and Colleagues After 8.5 years with Plumtree/BEA/Oracle, it is time for me to move on to something new and exciting. Tomorrow, May 21, will be my last day with Oracle. Prior to joining Plumtree back in 2001, I had not stayed with any one company for more than two years at a time and I really thought that that might be the case with Plumtree even then. However, 8.5 years later, I can definitely say that it has been a great ride with very few regrets. I have made some fantastic friends and have learned something from each and every one of you. I have definitely considered this to be a rewarding experience and I will miss all of you. I do hope that you will keep in contact. You never know, our paths may cross again in the future. • Would You Pay for Smartphone OS Updates? [Poll]

  For most phone ecosystems, manufacturer/carrier provided updates are few and far between (or outright nonexistent). To get access to mobile OS updates, would you open your wallet? While iPhone users are used to regular (and free) OS updates, the rest of us our largely left out in the cold. Over at ExtremeTech, Ryan Whitwam argues that we should be willing to pay for smartphone OS updates. The core of his argument is updates cost money and there is no financial incentive for carriers like Sprint and Verizon to turn back to their supplies (say, Motorola or LG) and pay them to provide an update pack for a phone they stopped selling last quarter. He writes: It might be hard to swallow, but the manufacturer of your phone is out to make money for its shareholders. The truth of the matter is that you’re not even the customer; the carrier is. Carriers buy thousands of phones at a time, and unless the carrier wants an update, there won’t be one because there is no one else to pay for it. Imagine if, instead of burning money for little or no benefit, an OEM actually had a financial incentive to port ICS to its older devices. Instantly, the idea of updating phones goes from the customer service back-burner to the forefront of a company’s moneymaking strategy. If the system proves a success, carriers could get involved and have a taste of the update fees as compensation for deploying the update over the air. This is more viable now than ever before thanks to the huge number of Android phones in the market. Samsung, for example, has sold over 30 million Galaxy S II phones since last summer. It has just started rolling Android 4.0 updates out to some countries, but most users are still waiting. If it charged just $10 for access to the update, that would be $150 million if only half of all users wanted an official update.
