  Brand new user to Ubuntu and Linux. Quick question that I think already know the answer to: Does Ubuntu 11.10 have an updated driver for my graphics card? I was planning on being able to s-video out and watch videos on my tv like I could when I had Vista installed. daryl@daryl-Aspire-3050:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M] [1002:5975] ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 is the actual card. As it is, Ubuntu is not recognizing when I plug an s-video cable into my laptop. I've narrowed it down to using what I think is a generic driver because all of the s-video enable commands I found and tried have failed.

• ghc can't find my cabal installed packages

  I've installed ghc 6.12.3, and then the Haskell Platform. I'm trying to compile a test program: $ ghc test.hs test.hs:3:0: Failed to load interface for `Bindings': Use -v to see a list of the files searched for. so, naturally, I do cabal install Bindings Which works fine, and places the package in ~/.cabal/lib/bindings-0.1.2 The problem is, that when I go to compile again with ghc, it still doesn't find the package I've installed with cabal. compiling in verbose mode gives: ghc -v test.hs Using binary package database: /home/ludflu/ghc/lib/ghc-6.12.3/package.conf.d/package.cache Using binary package database: /home/ludflu/.ghc/x86_64-linux 6.12.3/package.conf.d/package.cache As suggested by another stackoverflow user, I tried: ghc-pkg describe rts > rts.pkg vi rts.pkg # add the /home/ludflu/.cabal/lib to `library-dirs` field ghc-pkg update rts.pkg But to no avail. How to I add the .cabal to the list of package directories to search? Thank you!

• Boot splash broken by "SP5100 TCO timer: mmio address 0xyyyyyyy already in use"

  I have ubuntu 11.04 with all the latest updates. I have an ATI HD 4350 graphics card and the "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" activated. The reported behaviour does not affect the functionality, its just an optical thing. When I booted up using the desktop CD, the ubuntu boot splash was shown correctly in high resolution.   Trying to connect to 4D Database. PHPINFO says PDO is installed etc etc... Testing on localhost MAMP system. • How to implement a tagging plugin for jQuery

  Goal: To implement a jQuery plugin for my rails app (or write one myself, if necessary) that creates a "box" around text after a delimiter is typed. Example: With tagging on SO, the user begins typing a tag, then selects one from the drop-down list provided. The input field recognizes that a tag has been selected, puts a space and then is ready for the next tag. Similarly, I am attempting to use this plugin to put a box around the previously entered tag before moving to to accept the next tag/input. The instructions in the README.txt seem simple enough, however I have been receiving a $(".tagbox").tagbox is not a function error when debugging my app with firebug. Here is what I have in my application.js: $(document).ready( function(){ $('.tagbox').tagbox({ separator: /\[,]/, // specifying comma separation for <code>tags</code> }); }); And here is my _form.html.erb: <% form_for @tag do |f| %> <%= f.error_messages %> <p> <%= f.label :name %><br /> <%= text_field :tag, :name, { :method => :get, :class => "tagbox" } %> </p> <p><%= f.submit "Submit" %></p> <% end %> I have omitted some other code (namely the implementation of an autocomplete plugin) existing within my _form.html.erb and application.js for sake of readability. I have included all of the necessary files for the tagbox plugin (as well as application.js after all other included JS files) within the javascript_include_tag in my application.html.erb file. I'm pretty much confused as to why I'd be getting this "not a function" error when jquery.tagbox.js clearly defines the function and is included in the head of my html page in question. I've been struggling with this plugin for longer than I'd like to admit, so any help would really be appreciated. And, of course, I'm open to any other plugins or from-scratch suggestions you may have in mind.. This tagbox plugin does not seem to have a wealth of documentation or any currently working examples. • Why does sh/bash set command line parameter values when trying to set environment variable?

  A question on basics : While tuning environment variables for a program launched from a script, I ended up with somewhat strange behaviour with sh (which seems to be actually linked to bash) : variable setting seems to mess up with command-line parameters. Could somebody explain why does this happen? A simple script: #! /bin/sh # Messes with $1 ?? set ANT_OPTS=-Xmx512M export ANT_OPTS # Works # export ANT_OPTS=-Xmx512M echo "0 = $0" echo "1 = $1" When I run this with the upper alternative (set + export), the result is as following: $ ./test.sh foo 0 = ./test.sh 1 = ANT_OPTS=-Xmx512M But with lower alternative (export straight), the result is as I supposed: $ ./test.sh foo 0 = ./test.sh 1 = foo There is surely logical explanation, I just haven't figured it out yet. • IE7 modal dialog scrollbars overlap content

  Here's the offending code. However, if I open it in an IE7 modal dialog, it draws the vertical scrollbar on top of the margin. What's even worse, because it draws the scrollbar on top of the margin, it also causes a horizontal scrollbar to be drawn. How do I work around this? I absolutely must use the IE modal dialog, I'm not at liberty to change that.

  Does anyone else out there long for the simpler days where you needed to move a jumper in the jumper block to set your modem card to use IRQ7 so it would not conflict with the interrupts used by other boards in your PC and your modem card came with a 78 page manual telling you everything you would need to know to write your own driver for the board including a full schematic along with the board layout showing every chip, capacitor, and resistor?  Ahhhhh, the simplicity!I am wrestling with UserPnp issues for a USB software licensing dongle that is needed by some third party software in one of our production applications. Of course, every machine in production is virtual, so it could be anything in the chain of the software application library to the device driver running on the VM to the configuration of the simulated USB port to the implementation of the USB connection and transport in the virtual host to the physical electrical connections in the USB port on the hypervisor.If only there were the virtual analog to a set of needle-nose pliers to move a virtual jumper.Come to think of it, I always used to drop those damn things such that they would land in an irretrievable position under the motherboard anyway.

• Broadcom 4313 Signal strength very low on an HP Pavilion dv4

  I have a HP pavilion dv4 4141US laptop running fresh ubuntu 11.10. This laptop has a broadcom 4313gn chipset for the network card. The network card is using the brcmsmac driver. Which, I heard else where on askUbuntu that its the best driver to be using for this card. I can connect to my network, however I have extremely low network signal. Right now I am right in front of the router, and I only get 72%. If i go to the room directly behind the router's wall, i get no signal, where as with windows 7 I get a nice 70% percent. UPDATE: I use WEP at home and an open wireless connection at work. Both have same result. Both are completely different routers. Also you G What can i do?

• Play videos with libwebkit in Ubuntu 11.10 server

  I'm using libwebkit (with python-webkit) to render a page that plays a video. This application works fine in a Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop, Nvidia card and lots of libraries and software installed, but in a fresh Ubuntu 11.10 Server with intel 82945G/GZ card the video does not play. I guess either some codec package is missing or it's a driver problem. What could be missing for this to play? I'm trying with this video: http://video.eustasy.co.uk/480/ EDIT: doesn't look like a driver problem. With chromium I can play the video, but with libwebkit + python-webkit the video just shows the first frame and doesn't play. Any hints on what package could be missing? SOLVED: apparently it had to do with lack of audio. While chrome would play the video with no sound, libwebkit wouldn't start video. Adding user to audio and video groups solved the problem.

• Debugging maven junit tests with filtered resources?

  We are using filtered testResources in JUnit-tests that are usually executed by the maven surefire plugin. That is, the pom contains a section <build> <testResources> <testResource> <directory>src/test/resources</directory> <filtering>true</filtering> </testResource> </testResources> ... How can I run such JUnit-tests in the debugger? If I execute the tests in eclipse the tests fail since the test resources are not filtered. If the filtered test resources would be written somewhere into the target directory, I could just use this as an additional source path - but this is not the case. If I try to run the maven build in eclipse with Debug As / maven test , the build does not stop in the breakpoints. Any other ideas?

• Passing NULL value

  Hi. I use an instance of NSXMLParser. I store found chars in NSMutableStrings that are stored in an NSMutableDictionary and these Dicts are then added to an NSMutableArray. When I test this everything seems normal: I count 1 array, x dictionnaries and x strings. In a detailview controller file I want to show my parsed results. I call the class where everthing is stored but I get (null) returned. • .htaccess newb - RewriteRule not matching 2nd rule, why?

  I am currently migrating from isapi_rewrite to .htaccess. I'm having some difficulty and I think it's something basic, but I'm not terribly familiar with .htaccess. I have the two rules like so: RewriteRule ^testing/ /test/index.html?test=1 [NC] RewriteRule ^testing/foo-bar/ /test/index.html?test=2 [NC] Yet the second rule never matches. If I go to http://mydomain.com/testing/foo-bar/ then I will only see the first rule. Why is that? And can it be easily fixed? I have many rules (outputted from the database to write the .htaccess file )and ordering them in a particular order isn't really possible.

• Why isn't my Ruby object deleted when the last reference goes out of scope?

  Hi gurus, I've found a weird effect when trying to track down a memory leak in a Rails app. Can anyone explain what's going on here? Save this script as a plain Ruby script (Rails not necessary): class Fnord def to_s 'fnord' end end def test f = Fnord.new end test GC.start sleep 2 ObjectSpace.each_object do |o| puts o if o.is_a? Fnord end When I run this via ruby 1.8.7 (2009-06-12 patchlevel 174) [i486-linux] I get the following: bash $ ruby var_test fnord Although the variable f is out of scope, there are no other references to the single Fnord object, and I've garbage collected, the object still seems to exist. Is this a nefarious memory leak of some sort, or am I completely missing something about Ruby? Further, if I change the test method to this: def test f = Fnord.new f = nil end I get no output. But surely this should not change the semantics here? Many thanks!

• Working effectively unit tests / Anyone tried the in-assembly approach?

  I'm trying to re-introduce unit testing into my team as our current coverage is very poor. Our system is quite large 40+ projects/assemblies. We current use a project named [SystemName].Test.csproj were all the test code is dumped and organised to represent the namespaces using folders. This approach is not very scalable and makes it difficult to find tests. I've been thinking about added a Tests folder to each project, this would put the unit tests "in the developers face" and make them easy to find. The downside is the Production release code would contain references to nunit, nmocks as well as the test code and test data.... Has anyone tried this approach? How is everyone else working with unit tests on large projects? Having a Tests project per "real" project/assembly would introduce too many new projs. Thanks in advance

• How can I install Ubuntu (SO many problems)

  I have a question, my friend tried installing Ubuntu on my notebook (Asus g75v) and nothing tried, at one point he went past the installation screen and every he used the mouse the screen flickered and the driver crashed (I assume) and it would go back a step, I heard that there is way to install ubuntu without any graphics, maybe that will help me with the screen flickering (I have a gtx 670m), so we tried WUBI installer, I tried installing with that and it gave me a Wubildr.mbr missing error, so I gave that up after several times, although I do notice that I have an intel driver, and I keep downloading AMD versions, does that effect anything? I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu and I wish to be able to run it on my laptop, I want to learn this OS and I cannot even install it, I am a bit concerned, if anyone can back at me with any answer at all, please don't hesitate to post, just please don't post if you don't know what's going on, thanks for listening! ~cheers -Dragos
