• Having IIS remote management problem with my vista machine managing Server 2008 IIS 7.5

  I am trying to use IIS 7 Remote Management installed on Vista Ultimate SP1. Connection is to IIS 7.5 on Windows Server 2008 Webserver R2. Tried on both full & core install. When I connect up, the console wants to download and install new features. Microsoft.Web.Management.IisClient 7.5.0.0 Microsoft.Web.Management.AspnetClient 7.5.0.0 I check the boxes and click OK and it downloads them and asks if I want to install them, but after I click run it just quits. I tried just choosing one or the other, same thing. I ran IIS Remote tool as administrator. These features installed correctly on my XP machine. Any ideas? UPDATE : If I had any Rep I would offer like 500 rep to get this fixed!

• VAMT 3.0 Proxy Activate - No ‘Apply Confirmation ID’ option at all

  I tried to activate my windows box in isolated network zone, so I followed the process of 'Scenario 2: Proxy Activation' in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825202.aspx using two VAMT 3.0 hosts. Everything went fine (actually I'm not sure what option to choose when exporting VAMT data to .cilx file, I tried 'Export products and product keys' and 'Export proxy activation data only' anyway, is this a cause of this problem, I have no idea), until I wanted to apply the CID and activate the isolated pc. In 'Activate', there is no 'Apply Confirmation ID' option!, its only options are 'Acquire and save confirmation ID only' and 'Acquire confirmation ID, apply to selected machine(s) and activate'. The error message is 'cannot resolve remote name 'go.microsoft.com'' when I chose any of them, looks like acquire confirmation id always need to go to this url. But I just want to apply cid... Has anyone run into this, please? I searched internet, seems no answer... Any suggestion would be appreciated, thank you!

• SBS 2008 Backup Drive Full - Error Code '2147942512'

  We are using Windows Backup on SBS 2008 SP2 and backing up to 1TB external hard drives. Recently after switching drives our backup started failing because the backup drive is full and auto-delete isn't automatically deleting older backups/show copies. I'm trying to get more information to help me effectively prevent this problem from reoccurring in the future. How I can tell that the drive is getting full: In the event viewer under Windows Logs Application, I'm seeing Event ID 517 but it fails to show an intelligible description. However, under Applications and Services Logs Microsoft Windows Backup Operational, I'm seeing an event with the ID of 5 and a description like this: Backup started at '10/4/2011 12:30:12 PM' failed with following error code '2147942512'. One of the most informative posts I've found on this error is located on Microsoft's Technet Forums here. In that post, a Microsoft representative gives this hazy explanation: auto-delete feature to ensure that at least some old backup copies are maintained on the disk -- does not automatically delete backups if space utilization by older copies is less than 1/8 of the disk size or in other words, 13% of the disk size. that means if the one full backup copy does not fit in the 7/8 of the disk size, backup may fail with disk full error. auto-delete will not automatically delete older versions to reclaim more older versions of backup. In the above explanation, I do not understand what is meant by "older copies" except that it appears that anything older than the very last shadow copy would be considered "older copies". I'm going to make the assumption that this problem where auto-delete will not work will affect any hard drive that is large enough to make an effective backup drive, or in other words, any hard drive that is large enough to hold more than one backup/shadow copy at once. The same MS representative proposes the solution of using a larger backup drive. I can't understand how this will help. It appears to me it will simply delay the problem until a later date. In order to resolve this problem for now, I did the following: Assign the backup drive a disk letter under disk management. Run the command line with Administrative rights. diskshadow.exe [enter] delete shadows oldest x: [enter] (where X: is the letter you assigned your backup drive) I manually ran the above command some 60 or 80 times to free up about 200 GB of space on my 1 Terrabyte External Hard drive. However, I do not feel this is a satisfactory solution to prevent the problem from happening again in the future. Does anyone have a solution to prevent your Windows Server backup drive from getting full?

  Hello, I am in need of a thunderbird msi (Microsoft Installer) package which can be deployed via group policies using Microsoft ActiveDirectory. I am very pleased with the Firefox packaged provided by FrontMotion but unfortunately they do not have packages for Thunderbird. sob sob I guess, I could try to do the packaging myself, or do all of the installations by hand :( I did some searches and found very outdated packages by ZettaServe, but no current releases, yet.. Anyone using .msi packaged Thunderbird installations? If you have msi packages, where did you get them from? regards, Comradin

• Weird FTP issue between Unity Express and Windows Server 2008 FTP

  My VOIP specialist complained about not being able to run backups of the Unity Express onto our FTP server (Microsoft FTP on Server 2008). I did a packet trace and observed some weird behavior that I think is even kind of funny in a way. The Unity FTP client is able to initiate both control and data connections with no problem, even being able to LIST directories and CWD into them. But as soon as the client sends a SYST command (not sure why it cares), the server replies with "Windows_NT" and lo and behold...the client immediately sends a QUIT command! I've seen this happen consistently on my packet captures. I tried pointing the Unity FTP client to a FileZilla FTP server, and viola...it worked fine! Has anyone else observed this? I thought it was kinda funny, being that Cisco seems to not like Microsoft that much...

  Developer Training - Importance and Significance - Part 1 Developer Training – Employee Morals and Ethics – Part 2 Developer Training – Difficult Questions and Alternative Perspective - Part 3 Developer Training – Various Options for Developer Training – Part 4 Developer Training – A Conclusive Summary- Part 5 Can anyone remember their final day of schooling?  This is probably a silly question because – of course you can!  Many people mark this as the most exciting, happiest day of their life.  It marks the end of testing, the end of following rules set by teachers, and the beginning of finally being able to earn money and work in your chosen field. Beginning in Real World However, many former-students will be disappointed to find out that once they become employees, learning is not over.  Many companies are discovering the importance and benefits to training their employees.  You can breathe a sigh of relief, though, because much for this kind of training there are not usually tests! We often think that we go to school for our younger years so that we do all our learning all at once, and then for the rest of our lives we use that knowledge.  But in so many cases, but especially for developers, the opposite is true.  It takes many years of schools to learn the basics of a field, and then our careers are spent learning to become experts. For this, and so many other reasons, training is very important.  Example one: developer training leads to better employees.  A company is only as good as the people it employs, and one way to ensure that you have employed the right candidate is through training.  Training can take a regular “stone” and polish it into a “diamond.”  Employees who have been well-trained will be better at their jobs and produce a better product. Most Expensive Resource Did you know that one of the most expensive operating costs for any company is not buying goods, or advertising, but its employees – especially having to hire new employees.  Bringing in new people, getting them up to speed, and providing them with perks to attract them to a company is a huge cost for companies.  So employee retention – keep the employees you already have, and keeping them happy – is incredibly important from a business aspect.  And research shows that a well-trained employee is a happy employee.  They feel more confident in their job, happier with their position, and more cared-about – and therefore less likely to leave in search of a better job.  Employee training leads to better retention. Good Moral On the subject of keeping employees happy in order to keep them at a company, the complement to that research shows that happier employees are more efficient and overall better at their jobs.  You don’t have to be a scientist to figure out why this is true.  An employee who feel that his company cares about him and his educational future will work harder for the company.  He or she will put in that extra hour during the busy season that makes all the difference in the end.  Good morale is good for the company. If good morale is better for the company, you know that it goes hand-in-hand with something even better – better efficiency.  An employee who is well trained obviously knows more about their job and all the technical aspects.  That means when a problem crops up – and they inevitably do – this employee will be well-equipped to deal with that problem with fewer problems, and no need to go searching for help from higher up.  When employees are well trained, companies run more smoothly. A Better Product Of course, all of these “pros” for employee training are leading up to the one thing that companies truly care about – a better product.  We have shown that employees who have been trained to be competitive in the market are happier at the company, they are more efficient, and their morale is better.  The overall result is that the company’s product – whether it is a database, piece of equipment, or even a physical good – is better.  And a better product will always be more competitive on the market. Understanding and Controlling Parallel Query Processing in SQL Server Data warehousing and general reporting applications tend to be CPU intensive because they need to read and process a large number of rows. To facilitate quick data processing for queries that touch a large amount of data, Microsoft SQL Server exploits the power of multiple logical processors to provide parallel query processing operations such as parallel scans. Through extensive testing, we have learned that, for most large queries that are executed in a parallel fashion, SQL Server can deliver linear or nearly linear response time speedup as the number of logical processors increases. However, some queries in high parallelism scenarios perform suboptimally. There are also some parallelism issues that can occur in a multi-user parallel query workload. This white paper describes parallel performance problems you might encounter when you run such queries and workloads, and it explains why these issues occur. In addition, it presents how data warehouse developers can detect these issues, and how they can work around them or mitigate them. • Windows Azure Root CAs and SSL Client Certificates

  I ran into some problems while trying to make SSL client certificates work for StarterSTS 1.5. In theory you have to do two things (via startup tasks): Unlock the SSL section in IIS Install all the root certificates for the client certs you want to accept I did that. But it still does not work. While inspecting the event log, I stumbled over an schannel error message that I’ve never seen before: “When asking for client authentication, this server sends a list of trusted certificate authorities to the client. The client uses this list to choose a client certificate that is trusted by the server. Currently, this server trusts so many certificate authorities that the list has grown too long. This list has thus been truncated. The administrator of this machine should review the certificate authorities trusted for client authentication and remove those that do not really need to be trusted.” WTF? And indeed standard Azure (web role) VMs trust 275 root CAs (see attached list). Including kinda obscure ones. I don’t really know why MS made this design decision. It seems just wrong (including breaking the SSL client cert functionality). Deleting like 60% of them made SSL client certs from my CA work. So I guess I now have to find an automated way to attach CTLs to my site…joy. Exported list of trusted CA (as of 30th Dec 2010) AC Raíz Certicámara S.A. • Windows Update when Group Policy Forbids

  I am in the administrators group for my local Windows XP machine and I would like to get updates via http://update.microsoft.com/[1]. However, this is prevented via the group policy: Network policy settings prevent you from using this website to get updates for your computer. Is there anyway to override this specific policy for my machine or my user? [1] Several installed applications are Microsoft based, but are not part of the machine standard (eg Visual studio). As such, I am not getting the updates for these applications. I could periodically go to the various application sites and look for hotfixes, but that is beyond tedious.

• IUSR account and SCCM 2007 R3 agent

  I recently started working with SCCM and rolling the agent out with machine having IIS 7.x installed.  I ran into issues where the SCCM agent wouldn't install.  The errors mostly were 0x80004005 and 1603, another key one I found was Return Value 3 in the SCCM setup log.  During the troubleshooting, I found a cool utility called WMI Diag  WMI diag is a VBS script that reads the local WMI store and helps diagnose issue.  Anyone working with SMS or SCCM should keep this handy tool around.  The good thing my particular case WMI was healthy.  The issue turned out I changed the Anonymous Authentication module from using the IUSR account to inherit Application Pool identity.  Once we temporarily switched back to IUSR, installed the agent, then switched the setting back to inherit application pool identity, the SCCM agent installed with no issues. I'm not sure why switching back to the IUSR account solved my issue, if I find out I'll update the post.  More information on IIS 7 builtin accounts http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/140/understanding-built-in-user-and-group-accounts-in-iis-7 Specify an application pool identity  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771170(WS.10).aspx SCCM resources (Config Mgr Setup  / Deployment forums) http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrsetup/threads http://www.myitforum.com (the best independent SCCM community resource) Hope this helps. • Visual Studio RTM, Silverlight 4 RTM and WCF RIA Services download links

  Its been a long time since I blogged.  Primarily due to Tech Ed India, the ongoing Great Indian Developer Summit (GIDS 2010) and the related travels.  However, here is a quick post with a few updates.  Visual Studio 2010 RTMed in India during Tech Ed.  We had the privilege of having Soma our Senior VP launch VS 2010 RTM in Bangalore, India, during Tech Ed India 2010.   With that we also had Silverlight 4 getting RTMed during the same week. Earlier I had written posts around using the VS 2010 Beta, RC and the corresponding Silverlight, WCF RIA bits etc., and getting them all to work together.  Now that, both VS 2010 and Silverlight have RTMed, I wanted to post a quick update on the necessary downloads. Visual Studio 2010 RTM can be downloaded from MSDN Visual Studio site  If you are doing Silverlight 4 development with Visual studio, then you can download the Silverlight 4 Tools RC2 for Visual Studio  Then, if you are developing with WCF RIA Services, you can download the WCF RIA Services RC 2 for SL4 and VS 2010 And finally, if you want to use WCF RIA Services in ASP.NET you would require the Domain DataSource control.  Also, to use some of the additional Service Utility tools, you would require the WCF RIA Services Toolkit.  You can download the same from WCF RIA Services Toolkit April 2010 Once you have installed all the above, you should be able to see the following in your add-remove programs WCF RIA Services v1.0 for Visual Studio 2010 (Version 4.0.50401.0) WCF RIA Services Toolkit (Version 4.0.50401.0) Microsoft Silverlight (Version 4.0.50401.0) Microsoft Silverlight 4 SDK (Version 4.0.50401.0) Also, you would need the Expression Blend 4 for designing the apps for Silverlight 4.  You can download the release candidate from here Thats it.  You are all set for development with Visual Studio 2010 and Silverlight 4, WCF RIA Services. • How to run Firefox in Protected Mode? (i.e. at low integrity level)

  i noticed that Firefox, unlike Chrome and Internet Explorer, doesn't run in the Low Mandatory Level (aka Protected Mode, Low Integrity) Google Chrome: Microsoft Internet Explorer: Mozilla Firefox: Following Microsoft's instructions, i can manually force Firefox into Low Integrity Mode by using: icacls firefox.exe /setintegritylevel Low But Firefox doesn't react well to not running with enough rights: i like the security of knowing that my browser is running with less rights than i have. Is there a way to run Firefox into low rights mode? Is Mozilla planning on adding "protected mode" sometime? Has someone found a workaround to Firefox not handling low rights mode? Update From a July 2007 interview with Mike Schroepfer, VP of Engineering at the Mozilla Foundation: ...we also believe in defense in depth and are investigating protected mode along with many other techniques to improve security for future releases. After a year and a half it doesn't seem like it is a priority.

• West Palm Beach Developers&rsquo; Group Celebrates its Fifth Anniversary as a Member of INETA

In celebrating our membership, INETA sent us a certificate recognizing our membership which we will be sharing with our members at our upcoming meeting. It‘s been a great two-year tenure for me as group co-coordinator working with Venkat Subramanian who had been involved with the group since its inception. Moving into the future we hope to grow both group membership and leadership. We continue to strive to bring added value to our membership which can only happen with your ideas, feedback and involvement in our community-driven group. • SBS 08 Backup fail

  I'm trying to backup my SBS 08 (only C:) with Windows Server Backup. It fails a few minutes after it started : Backup started at '08/12/2009 1:27:23 PM' failed as Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes with following error code '2155348022'. Please rerun backup once issue is resolved. In the EventViewer i have lots of error : VSS : 12289 SQLVDI : 1 MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE : 18210 MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE : 3041 SQLWRITER : 24583 All VSS ans SQL services are started. I have WSUS 3.0, Exchange 07. I don't have any third party backup software running at the same time. Thanks for your help !
