• Deploying BlackBerry Applications Across Environments

  Has anyone come up with a good solution for deploying BlackBerry applications across different environments? My example is storing URLs and Authentication information in code. In most cases, a developer is going to have a different set of URL's to test against when developing the application vs what the end user is going to hit. The idea is when I go to build for production, I have something swap out the environment settings for the target environment vs manually replacing environment specific code each time. I am currently using eclipse. The only thought I've come up with so far would be to use a resource with encrypted values and have that swap when I run my build. Any ideas?

• Issue with android tablayout switch tab

  I am a new android developer, just tried something with Android Tablayout. There are two tabs and one tab has a GridView and the other one has a DatePicker. I created an activity and layout for each tab. The problem is that when I switch to the gridView, the background is not refreshed, and the images are just drawn over the DatePicker, so through images, the DatePicker still can be seen. It really bothers me. What should I do to have a clean background for imageView? Steve

If I view the target element in the 'Developer Tools', that class is completely missing from the Style panel. • Event is causing an error, but I can't catch the exception

  A developer has created a custom control in ASP.NET using VB.NET. The custom control uses a repeater. In certain scenarios, the rpt_ItemDataBound event is encountering a data error. My goal is rather than having the user see the yellow screen of death, give the user a friendlier error explaining exactly what the data error is. I figured I would be able to use a Try/Catch block as shown below throw the exception, however, it appears that the event has nowhere to be thrown to and stops executing at the "End Try" line.   I'm kinda new to Dojo toolkit. There are certain issues which I would like to get enlightened (I googled but I didn't get any appropriate & satisfying answers) I have a dojo.js(Perhaps the uncompressed dojo.js downloaded) in my already running application (Developed by another software developer). How to find out which version of dojo.js he has downloaded and is being used right now? (Its not commented. I checked) a) While I'm trying to run my application in IE-8 (Opening a pop-up on click of a button), I get error which is pointing me to this line of code if(dojo.isIE&&window.location.protocol==="file:") Note: Its working fine in IE6 but the issue is with IE8 & to be even more specific the JS error is displayed only for the first time when I'm clicking the button. b) Is it true that dojo 1.3 & above is the best & stable release for IE8?

• Uninstalling user install of Apache on Mac Mini

  I got a MacMini at work for development, and was asked to follow this article to install SVN on it: http://developer.apple.com/tools/subversionxcode.html The article assumes that only Apache 1.3 was installed and asks the reader to install Apache 2. I've since learned that the MacMini has Apache 2 already installed. So basically I've installed two versions of Apache 2. The preinstalled one has access to PHP, so I wanted to remove my version, but I'm unsure of how. My version has httpd.conf stored at: /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf And the preinstalled version has it stored at: /etc/apache2/httpd.conf, which I believe is an alias for /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf Thanks for your help

The code will use system installation cabal as any Haskell library. A library is released with cabal has a meta data file where there is a logical predicate from the libraries and their versions. • Loading jQuery with Tapestry 5

  Okay, so I'm not a Java guy, but I work with loads of them. We generally load Prototype with Tapestry 5, as Tapestry was built on this javascript library. As a UI/front end developer/engineer, I know the awesomeness of jQuery and the lack of prototype therein. (Feel free to debate that elsewhere -- this ticket doesn't concern that question, ha.) I've been curious for some time if it's possible to port jQuery into Tapestry instead of Prototype -- as in completely removing Prototype and Scriptaculous -- I realize it kind of defeats the purpose of the already bundled Prototype, but I wanted other opinions on the matter. • Why isn't my favicon appearing in IE7/8?

It will not appear in IE 7/8 no matter what I do! I've tried everything I can think of, including: generating the ICO with a variety of different utilities, changing the syntax of the favicon link elements in the document head, using absolute, relative, and root-relative URLs in the favicon link elements, using a PNG instead of an ICO file, ensuring that I am uploading the file via FTP in binary mode, As a longtime web developer/programmer, I can't believe that this is tripping me up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Does anyone else think instance variables are problematic in database-backed applications?

  It occurs to me that state control in languages like C# is not well supported. By this, I mean, it is left upto the programmer to manage the state of in-memory objects. A common use-case is that instance variables in the domain-model are copies of information residing in persistent storage (i.e. the database). Clearly this violates the single point of authority principle, and "synchronisation" has to be managed by the developer. I envisage a system where instead of instance variables, we have simple public access/mutator methods marked with attributes that link them to the database, and where reads and writes are mediated by a framework that decides whether to hit the database. Does such a system exist? Am I completely missing the point, or is there some truth to this idea?

• How can I avoid causing memory leaks in Firefox?

  It seems that there is a lot of information on memory leaks in IE and how web developers can avoid them, but I can't find much on avoiding leaks in FF. I've found lots of random tips on how end users can tweak their preferences, or tips for extension developers, but little on what I can do as a web developer to make sure my pages don't leak. Am I missing something? It seems lazy to just blame it on the user and say "you've got too many extensions". Or are the major patterns the same as in IE -- circular references and all that? Also, if anyone knows of any tools to troubleshoot leaks in FF, that would be great. • Application disappears after starting - C++ linking managed code dll

  Hello, we have a problem with our applications. We have recently upgraded our toolchain to Visual Studio 2010 and friends, it all works fine on Windows Vista + Windows 7 developer machines and Windows 7 customer machines. (all x86) Today we did a first installation to a client PC running Windows XP SP3 x86, and all applications linking managed code dll do not work. After starting the .exe seemingly nothing happens, no window pops up, no memory gets eaten, no task shows in task manager, nothing, nada. Event log is empty, everything is just as if the application returned to the OS right after the start. I am at loss about this, I really don't know how should I start even debugging this problem. I don't want to install VS2010 and everything onto a Windows XP box, I'd like to try something less time intensive first. This all is happening just to native C++ apps that link managed c++ DLL. Pure managed C# apps do work. Pure native C++ apps do work.

  I am attempting to collaborate on a C#/WPF project with another developer remotely via e-mail; and although the code compiles perfectly when it leaves, my collaborator has not been able to compile the code on his side. We are both using VS 2008 Version 9. This is the first time trying to work with someone else on an application and I was hoping that someone would advise me if there are any suggestions to obtain and ensure compatibility between the two of us? Additionally, is there a recommended procedure to prepare the solution for shipment (ie. just zip up the solution folder? export the application? etc.)? Thanks very much.

• WPF Books in 2010

  I'm looking to learn WPF, and I'd like to get a book to help in the process. Most of the popular questions on SO regarding actual books are from 2008, and I wanted to see if recommendations for books had changed at all. WPF Unleashed, which seems to be the most popular recommendation, was published in 2006, which is quite a while ago, with the lightening-quick pace that Microsoft has been following with .NET. Does this book still work? For some background, I'm a web developer (using MVC, so MVVM makes sense to me conceptually), looking to make the jump to desktop development. I did C# a while ago, but I'll be picking up a separate C# book to get up to speed on that. I am not interested in Silverlight. I am not necessarily interested in flashy UIs right now, as I'm working on business software but what I am interested in is good, clean, intuitive user interfaces.

• How should I migrate DDL changes from one environment to the next?

  I make DDL changes using SQL Developer's GUI. Problem is, I need to apply those same changes to the test environment. I'm wondering how others handle this issue. Currently I'm having to manually write ALTER statements to bring the test environment into alignment with the development environment, but this is prone to error (doing the same thing twice). In cases where there's no important data in the test environment I usually just blow everything away, export the DDL scripts from dev and run them from scratch in test. I know there are triggers that can store each DDL change, but this is a heavily shared environment and I would like to avoid that if possible. Maybe I should just write the DDL stuff manually rather than using the GUI?

  Hello, I'm not a java developer. But I'm currently taking a look at Android applications development so I'm doing a bit of nostalgy, doing some java again after not touching it for three years. I'm looking forward using the "google-api-translate-java" library. In which there is a Language class. It's an enum allowing to provide the language name and to get it's value for Google Translate. I can easily get all the values with : for (Language l : values()) { // Here I loop on one value } But what I'd want to get is a list of all the keys names (FRENCH, ENGLISH, ...). Is there something like a "keys()" method that'd allow me to loop through all the enum's keys ?

• Problem loading js content with ajax

  I have a page that loads content into a single div via a script in the page. It works fine but the problem is that I have a lightbox in one of the dynamically loaded pages that only works the first time you navigate to it (the script I got for the page loading is found here). Once you navigate to another area, then back again, the lightbox fails to work and instead just loads the plain image. It's been suggested that the easiest way to fix this would be to have a script unload the js and css that is loaded in with the page, then reload it when you go back to the gallery section. I'm a designer, not a developer though, so I don't know if this is true or not. Any help is really appreciated. The page can be found here: justgooddesign.net/graduation/

  Sheesh talk about limited information! I'm trying to get my Android application to connect to an online database to access information. There's quite a bit of info including geotags and these are going to be mapped on my app. The developer site has the very informative piece of information: You can use the network (when it's available) to store and retrieve data on your own web-based services. To do network operations, use classes in the following packages: java.net.* android.net.* Like I said in my previous question, I'm still very much an android newbie, and trying to remember my java oop from college is slow. Does anyone have an example of how this might work, or how I could implement it? I wouldn't mind even connecting to a local xml file, if I could find a good example of how to do that!? Am I just looking in all the wrong places?! Help. Please! T

  Our web project is source-controlled with SVN. It contains MSBuild file to build local, test and production builds. We also use CruiseControl.NET to deploy production and test versions to servers manually (not after every commit). The question is how to check that if production deployment is being done using CC.NET web project is built using production build (not test or other)? How to force specific steps to be executed when building and deploying to production (like compress JS and CSS, compile with debug="false", etc...)? Now it is possible for every developer make changes in MSBuild file (so he/she can forget to compress JS on production build, etc.).

• Is it a good practice to perform direct database access in the code-behind of an ASP.NET page?

  Hi, I am an experienced developer but I am new to web application development. Now I am in charge of developing a new web application and I could really use some input from experienced web developers out there. I'd like to understand exactly what experienced web developers do in the code-behind pages. At first I thought it was best to have a rule that all the database access and business logic should be performed in classes external to the code-behind pages. My thought was that only logic necessary for the web form would be performed in the code-behind. I still think that all the business logic should be performed in other classes but I'm beginning to think it would be alright if the code-behind had access to the database to query it directly rather than having to call other classes to receive a dataset or collection back. Any input would be appreciated.

• frequently merge changes between branch and trunk?

  My team and I are using svn branches for the first time. Before, we use to work only from the trunk. Over the past 2 weeks, we've been refactoring and developing new code against our branch. But during that time, another developer has been making bug fixes to code in the trunk and deploying it to the production server. We would like to frequently "update" our branch with changes from the trunk to make sure we get the latest fixes. But the problem is that we're making drastic changes to our branch, and many files have been renamed. I have a feeling every "update" we do on our branch that takes changes from trunk will cause a conflict, unless we some how get subversion to recognise that fileA.html in trunk is really fileB.html in branch. Am I using subversion branches correctly? Am I using the word "update" correctly? Are frequent "updates" in branch advisable?
