• Is it a good practice to perform direct database access in the code-behind of an ASP.NET page?

  Hi, I am an experienced developer but I am new to web application development. Now I am in charge of developing a new web application and I could really use some input from experienced web developers out there. I'd like to understand exactly what experienced web developers do in the code-behind pages. At first I thought it was best to have a rule that all the database access and business logic should be performed in classes external to the code-behind pages. My thought was that only logic necessary for the web form would be performed in the code-behind. I still think that all the business logic should be performed in other classes but I'm beginning to think it would be alright if the code-behind had access to the database to query it directly rather than having to call other classes to receive a dataset or collection back. Any input would be appreciated.

  I'm a developer (and therefore a tester) of a website. Our site accepts any JavaScript or HTML from an user but I haven't been successful in explaining the danger of it, as obvious as it is. So I would like to prove it by logging in as my boss to prove to him that there is definitely a real danger here. I think this will put down any of his arguments and let us move onto filtering content like this. (note this question is not about filtering, or other suggestions on JavaScript tricks) I already know how to steal the value of the document.cookie variable with AJAX and a PHP file, but once you have that string of name=value;name=value;..., how do you apply it to your own browser? This is programming related because I am asking about tools which will help me debug my web program.

• Why learn Perl, Python, Ruby if the company is using C++, C# or Java as the application language?

  I wonder why would a C++, C#, Java developer want to learn a dynamic language? Assuming the company won't switch its main development language from C++/C#/Java to a dynamic one what use is there for a dynamic language? What helper tasks can be done by the dynamic languages faster or better after only a few days of learning than with the static language that you have been using for several years? Update After seeing the first few responses it is clear that there two issues. My main interest would be something that is justifiable to the employer as an expense. That is, I am looking for justifications for the employer to finance the learning of a dynamic language. Aside from the obvious that the employee will have broader view, the employers are usually looking for some "real" benefit.

  I am learning how to encrypt the ConnectionString for our C# (3.5) Application. I read the .Net Framwork Developer Guide (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/89211k9b(VS.80).aspx) about securing connection string. but not fully understand the contents. It says "The connection string can only be decrypted on the computer on which it was encrypted." We have a release machine which will build our application which will generate the OurApp.exe.config and then install it to many product machines. Is that meam we have to have this encryption process separated with our application and run it at individual product machine? We may use the "RSAProtectedConfigurationProvider". It mentioned we need encryption key for that provider. when and how we should provide the encryption key? thanks,

  I would like to be able to retrieve contents of a .txt file from the internet, and load it in an EditText. I tried using the code on this page: Reading Text File From Server on Android It didn't work, as you might have guessed. I've read on numerous sites about this type of problem, but I can't get anything to work. Someone suggested AndroidHttpClient (http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/http/AndroidHttpClient.html), but I simply can't find any examples with this. As I'm a newbie in Android programming, I would love if someone could please give me a small example.

Say I'm planning to build a web application and some of the functional requirements include (apart from the usual hard hitting security reqs), - Need to have users sign up for a new account profile - Authenticate user using the native app authentication / Facebook or Google or Yahoo or OpenId login - Allow lost password retrieval - Session handling needs Is there an out of the box frameworks (Drupal, Liferay??) that I can use to wrap my application which can be a bunch of JSP's or HTML's with JS?   I've been a web developer for almost a decade. I've mostly used classic ASP/JavaScript and I'd like to move into Java based apps. I have a decent understanding of Java itself (enough to know how to lookup what I don't know) and I spent some time doing minor work on a JSF/Spring/Hibernate app, but from what a trusted coworker told me, this application is the example of what not to do. I want to learn the really hardcore stuff (EJBs, HA Clustering, etc), but I know I have to walk before I can run. Is the Sun Tutorial the best place to start? Or is there an definitive book (like K&R for C or Gang of Four for design patterns) that I should buy?

  I'm reading some docs about MDM. According to "Moile device management protocol" document, server can set config for managed devices by installing profile files onto devices. My Questions are: if server install 2 profiles that have different config for the same thing, what will happen? "Moile device management protocol" documents also mention about "Managed App Configuration and Feedback". So what is different between the previous config file with this function of server. Is "Managed App Configuration and Feedback" just for specific app, not for the whole device as profile files. which fields can be config via "Managed App Configuration and Feedback" of MDM? • SVN - ignoring files already in repository

  I have a configuration file in my project which needs to be in the repository (so new developers get it when they checkout the project). Each developer might change some values in the file locally - these changes should not be committed and I don't want them showing in the synchronization menu (I'm using eclipse and subversive if it matters). Note that I can't just set the svn:ignore property since it only works on files that aren't under version control - but I do want to keep a base version of the file in the repository. How can I avoid the file showing in synchronization without deleting it from repository? EDIT: A better description - what I actually need is to be able to set a "read-only" property on the config file, so it can't be changed in the repository as long as the property is on. Do you know anything like this? Thanks

  Hi I am coding a web-crawler which will crawl the websites and selectively parse different sections of a web site. I am a .Net developer so the choice was obvious that I did it in .Net but the speed was very slow which included downloading and parsing of HTMLPages Then I tried to just download the contents first using .Net and then same domains using python but the python was very impressive in downloading data. I have achieved downloading using python but the later part is not that easy to code in python, which obviously i don't want to do. The same batch of domain which took 100 seconds in Python was taking 20 minutes in .Net based crawler I tried http://www.eqlit.com/ to download and in took 8 seconds in Python and same was taking 100 Seconds in .Net crawler Does anyone anyone have any idea why this is slow in .Net but fast in python?

• How do I access a DIV from javascript, if ASP.NET mangles its ID?

  I have a web page that contains a "div" element. On the page, there is javascript to reference the div: document.getElementById('divId'). This was working fine until another developer redesigned the page to use an ASP master page. Now, document.getElementById('divId') returns null. It appears that ASP.net prepends some characters to the names of elements within contents forms when you use a master page. How can I know what the id of the div is when the page loads? Update Allow me to give a specific example to clarify the question: My page had a div with ID divNotice. After changing my page to use a master page, I see when I print the source to the page that renders that the div ID is ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_divNotice. My question is, how am I supposed to know what the div ID is going to be when the framework is done with it?

  I recently took on a project to build a webpage. I am an experienced developer but never worked with coding a psd file into a webpage. Now, the psd file uses a specific font, which I do not have probably, as I can see it in grey and [ ] at the bottom of the fonts list. Sorry for the naive question, but what am I supposed to do from the client's point of view? Should I have that font? Should I buy it? Can I extract it from the psd file?   Hi All, Let me explain my scenarios I have branch called ca-dev and its pretty stable,now I have to revert about 100 revisions (ca-dev has about 400 revisions checked in total after it branched out )from different users which were checked in over 4 months before I am branching new branch called agile-dev.Can any body help me best way to do... I tried using tortise svn some got reverted some I got conflicts and I resolved my self blindly so build is breaking.
