C'est UTF-16 qui avait été choisi pour le support de l'Unicode dans PHP, mais ce développement s'est avèré trop difficile et la compatibilité très mauvaise. Le travail est donc mis en stand-by pour une durée indéterminée, le temps de se vider la tête pour les programmeurs, puis de réfléchir à une autre solution pour l'intégration d'Unicode. • Finding/hiring help with server administration

  I need to install the fileinfo extension for PHP on my server. My hosting service does not support help with this. I know I could learn it and do it myself, but since I am an independent contractor and I know that server administration is the weakest part of my abilities, a DIY approach is going to cost me a lot more time than I can afford. What is the best way to go about hiring a trustworthy contractor to either install the fileinfo extension for me or to train me in how to do this. Thank-you.

• Which mobile device is appropriate as a utility tool for a web master?

  Basically, I'm looking for a device to use on the road and I would prefer to not have to sit down for the majority of the tasks (which rules out netbooks, in my mind). I'm also hoping to spend less than $500. This is what I'd like to "capably" be able to do on the device: Browse the web in non-mobile format, flash is a plus Email, chat, etc Have access to a decent text editor and ftp OR a browser that supports BESPIN/ACE Some sort of SSH support I'm looking at rooted Android phones and iPhone/iPads... though the phone aspect is only icing (it would be cool to consolidate the two devices and have net access through cell networks, but I'm not married to the idea). Are there cheap linux tablets that are ready for prime-time yet? I suppose that would be ideal. All suggestions welcome!

• Configuring Dropbox on Ubuntu server

  I've got a Ubuntu server running on an old laptop. The OS is on a 4GB USB drive and I use a SATA drive attached for storage. Now I wanted to set up Dropbox on this machine. I've got it running using this guide: http://www.byteindia.com/internet/install-dropbox-on-linux/482/. But I haven't synched yet because there won't be enough room in my home dir. My /home is on my 4GB USB since I never use it and all my data is on the 2TB drive mounted in /media/. What is the best way to set this up? Dropbox doesn't support moving the folder in Linux yet. I found a script to move the folder but it seems outdated. Perhaps I can use symlinks in some clever way? Or maybe move my /home folder to my SATA drive? Thanks in advance

It's the first company I've worked in after I graduated from college. I don't have any problem with the company, I just realized that I want to learn new technologies and get out of my comfort zone and move to the IT industry. I already got a job offer from another company. My IT manager has told me that I am one of the best players in our group, that our group is enough to support our company and that it would be unacceptable if anyone of us resigned. They will counter the offer, but I'm set on leaving. My problem is that I don't know what are the essential dos and don'ts when resigning from a current employer.   We have support for various languages in our website, including Spanish, French and Swedish. For now, the links in the site are NOT encoded before sent to the browser, sending the real accented chars (if such exists, i.e. href="www.(dot)example(dot)com/héllo.html") and not their HEX representation. This works & looks good on all browsers, including Chrome, FF and IE. However, we care great deal about SEO. We got this tip that encoding the links before sending them to the browser (so instead of linking to http://www.example.com/héllo, we will link to http://www.example.com/h%E9llo) will improve the way search engines will 'understand' the links and the keywords in the URL. This involves some work at our side, so we wanted to know if there's truth in that tip, but couldn't find anything addressing this issue.

  I have very specific task. I need to clear the desktop, downloads, documents and so on after every shutdown or finish. For example, if anyone downloads something using Google Chrome, he will work with it and then he'll shutdown the computer for next use. And when second user sits for working on the computer, he'll find a clear file system without the data downloaded by the first user. On Windows, I used to work with Returnil Virtual System, but it doesn't have support for Linux. Can anybody tell me if is it possible and, if so, how? I was also thinking of using Wine for this program, but don't think it will be the best idea.

  I had read an interview with a great programmer (it is not in English) and in it he said that "a great programmer can be as 100 times as good as a mediocre one" giving reason for why good programmers are very well paid and why programming companies give many facilities for their employees. The idea was that there is a very large demand for good programmers, because of the above reason and that's why companies pay very much to bring them. Do you agree with this statement? Do you know any objective facts that could support it? Edit: The question has nothing to do with experience; if you talk about one great programmer with 1 year experience then s/he should be 10 times more productive than a mediocre programmer with 1 year experience. I agree that from certain experience years onwards, things start to dissipate but that's not the purpose of the question.

• Oracle Linux 6.3 RPMs Now Available

  The installation media ISO for Oracle Linux 6.3 is still "in the oven" but the RPMs are already available.  You can grab them on ULN, if you have an Oracle Linux support subscription, or anyone can get them from public-yum.oracle.com.  Oracle Linux 6.3 includes a quarterly update of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 2 (kernel-uek-2.6.39-200.9.0.el6uek).  To install that kernel, make sure you have the ol6_UEK_latest channel or repo enabled.  Enjoy.

• Banshee won't sync OGG format to my iphone

  I have a jailbroken iphone 3g with 16 gigs of memory and I've been putting my music on it from banshee lately and have been having almost no issue. Unfortunately, I just added a few albums to my Banshee library and tried to sync them to my iphone, but every time I try, i see a hundred or so errors saying that the device doesn't support the ogg format and there was no converter found. I'm still pretty much a newb at this stuff, so please help me and dumb down your answer. I'm running 12.04 and again, using an iphone 3g with no sim card, but it's been jailbroken and is used primarily for it's music function.

• How do you go about checking your open source libraries for keystroke loggers?

  A random person on the internet told me that a technology was secure(1), safe to use and didn't contain keyloggers because it is open source. While I can trivially detect the key stroke logger in this open source application, what can developers(2) do to protect themselves against rouge committers to open source projects? Doing a back of the envelope threat analysis, if I were a rogue developer, I'd fork a branch on git and promote it's download since it would have twitter support (and a secret key stroke logger). If it was an SVN repo, I'd create just create a new project. Even better would be to put the malicious code in the automatic update routines. (1) I won't mention which because I can only deal with one kind of zealot at a time. (2) Ordinary users are at the mercy of their virus and malware detection software-- it's absurd to expect grandma to read the source of code of their open source word processor's source code to find the keystroke logger.

• What would be the most efficient use of e-mail addresses for ecommerce

  I am not sure if this is exactly the right section. What do you find the most efficient, clear and reachable use of e-mail addresses to use for the customer? I thought a standard 'sales, 'support' might work but it might look a little samey. Do users respond well when e-mails are replied by staff with named e-mail addresses such as [email protected] or a generic one? I am currently developing a small scale ecommerce website to gain some hands on insight into web retail. Any additional advice would be brilliant.
